The Girl He Could Never Forget

Chapter 1: The Girl in the Bookstore

Liana and Luana had been mistaken for each other their entire lives.

It wasn't surprising. They were identical twins.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

The same face.

Even their voices sounded almost the same.

But anyone who knew them well could tell them apart immediately.

Liana was quiet, shy, and happiest when surrounded by books. She could spend an entire day curled up in a corner with a novel and never feel bored.

Luana was the complete opposite.

She loved music, loved meeting new people, loved adventures, and hated staying indoors for too long.

Despite their differences, they were inseparable.

Their mother had raised them to be best friends before anything else, and they truly were.

They shared secrets.

They shared dreams.

They shared laughter.

What they never imagined was that one day they would unknowingly fall in love with the same man.

It began in a bookstore.

Liana had left the house to buy a novel she had been waiting months to read.

The bookstore was quiet.

Peaceful.

Exactly the kind of place she loved.

She was reaching for a book when another hand reached for it at the same time.

She looked up.

A handsome young man stood in front of her.

He smiled.

"Looks like we have the same taste."

Liana laughed softly.

"Looks like it."

That single sentence became a conversation.

The conversation became an hour.

Then another.

They discussed novels.

Authors.

Favorite characters.

Heartbreaking endings.

Happy endings.

Books that had changed their lives.

For the first time in years, Liana forgot how nervous she usually felt around strangers.

Talking to him felt easy.

Natural.

Comfortable.

She learned that he loved reading just as much as she did.

He learned that she could talk endlessly about fictional characters as if they were real people.

Hours seemed to disappear around them.

Neither of them noticed how much time had passed.

Then her phone rang.

Mom.

Liana's eyes widened.

"Oh no."

The young man looked concerned.

"Is everything okay?"

"Yes."

She laughed nervously.

"It's my mom."

"That doesn't sound so bad."

"It is when you never leave the house."

He raised an eyebrow.

"You don't go out?"

"Not much."

She checked the time and immediately panicked.

"Oh no."

"What happened?"

"My mother is definitely worried by now."

She quickly gathered her books.

The young man stood up.

"Wait."

Liana paused.

"At least tell me your name."

For a moment, she looked like she wanted to.

Like she wanted to stay a little longer.

Like she wanted the conversation to continue.

But another glance at her phone reminded her how late it had become.

"I'm sorry."

She laughed apologetically.

"I really have to go."

"Then give me your number."

Liana shook her head.

"I'm sorry."

Before he could say another word, she turned and hurried toward the exit.

"Wait!"

She looked back once.

Only once.

Then smiled.

A small smile.

One he would remember for years.

"Sorry!"

And then she was gone.

The young man stood there staring at the doorway long after she had disappeared.

He didn't know her name.

Didn't have her number.

Didn't know where she lived.

Didn't even know if he would ever see her again.

Yet somehow, she had left an impression he couldn't explain.

For the rest of the day, he found himself thinking about her.

Her smile.

Her laugh.

The way her eyes lit up whenever she talked about books.

It was ridiculous.

He had only known her for a few hours.

Yet for the first time in a very long time, he found himself hoping fate would give him another chance to see her again.

And somewhere on the ride home, while holding the novel she had come to buy, Liana couldn't stop thinking about him either.

Chapter 2: Two Years Later

His name was Adrian.

And for the next two years, he searched for her.

Every time he passed the bookstore, he stopped.

Every time he entered, he secretly hoped she would be there.

She never was.

Still, he never forgot her.

He remembered the way she laughed when she talked about books.

The way her eyes lit up whenever she spoke about a story she loved.

The way she became excited over fictional characters as though they were real people.

Most of all, he remembered her smile.

The small smile she had given him before disappearing through the bookstore door.

It had only been a few hours.

A single afternoon.

Yet somehow, that afternoon stayed with him.

Days became weeks.

Weeks became months.

Months became years.

Sometimes Adrian would convince himself he had finally forgotten her.

Then he would see a novel she might have liked.

Or walk past the bookstore where they met.

Or hear someone discussing books with the same passion she had.

And suddenly, he would think about her all over again.

He didn't even know her name.

Yet he never stopped hoping that one day fate would bring her back.

Two years later, Adrian was walking home after work.

The streets were busy.

Cars moved slowly through traffic.

People hurried past each other.

Everyone seemed focused on their own lives.

Then Adrian froze.

A few feet away stood a girl.

His heart nearly stopped.

The same face.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

For a second, the entire world seemed to disappear.

It was her.

After two years.

It was finally her.

Without thinking, Adrian hurried toward her.

"Where have you been?"

No response.

"I've been looking for you for two years."

Nothing.

"You disappeared before telling me your name."

Still nothing.

"I kept going back to that bookstore hoping I'd find you."

The girl continued walking.

Adrian frowned.

Had she forgotten him?

Had those few hours meant nothing to her?

Then she finally removed her AirPods.

"Huh?"

Adrian blinked.

"You didn't hear any of that?"

The girl laughed awkwardly.

"No, sorry."

She pointed at her ears.

"I was listening to music."

For a moment, Adrian felt completely ridiculous.

He had just poured out two years' worth of frustration to someone who hadn't heard a single word.

The girl smiled.

"Can I help you?"

Adrian laughed nervously.

"Maybe."

She held out her hand.

"Hi. I'm Luana."

Adrian stared at her hand for a second before shaking it.

Finally.

A name.

After two years, he finally had a name.

"I'm Adrian."

"Nice to meet you, Adrian."

Nice to meet you.

The words almost made him laugh.

If only she knew how long he had been searching for her.

The two of them ended up talking for nearly an hour.

Luana was easy to talk to.

She was confident in a way Adrian wasn't used to.

She laughed easily.

Made jokes constantly.

And somehow managed to make every conversation fun.

By the time they exchanged contact information, Adrian felt happier than he had in years.

Maybe fate had finally decided to give him a second chance.

---

That evening, Luana practically ran into the house.

"Liana!"

Liana looked up from her book.

Her sister was smiling far too much.

That could only mean one thing.

"What happened?"

"I met someone."

Liana immediately laughed.

"Oh?"

"A handsome someone."

"Even better."

Luana dropped onto the couch dramatically.

"He was tall."

Liana nodded seriously.

"Very important."

"He was handsome."

"Extremely important."

"And he asked for my number."

Liana gasped dramatically.

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"Yes."

Both sisters burst into laughter.

Then Luana pointed at her.

"You know what your problem is?"

Liana narrowed her eyes.

"I don't think I like where this conversation is going."

"You stay indoors too much."

"There it is."

"I'm serious."

Luana grabbed the book from her sister's hand.

"One day you're going to marry one of these fictional men."

"Give me my book."

"No."

"Luana."

"No."

"Luana."

Her sister laughed.

"Go outside."

"I go outside."

"You go outside once every six months."

"That is not true."

"It absolutely is."

Liana snatched her book back.

"I'm perfectly happy."

"Books don't count."

Liana threw a pillow at her.

Luana threw it back.

Soon both sisters were laughing so hard neither could continue the argument.

Neither of them knew they were talking about the same man.

Over the following weeks, Adrian and Luana began spending more time together.

At first, everything felt perfect.

They went on walks together.

Visited cafés.

Tried new restaurants.

Shared ice cream.

Watched movies.

Talked about life.

Luana was adventurous.

Every weekend she wanted to try something new.

A new restaurant.

A new park.

A new activity.

Something.

Anything.

Just to avoid staying indoors.

Adrian enjoyed being around her.

She brought excitement into his life.

And before long, they officially started dating.

Luana couldn't have been happier.

Every time she returned home from seeing him, Liana immediately knew.

The smile on her face gave everything away.

"You're smiling again."

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I'm not."

"You are."

Luana rolled her eyes.

Liana laughed.

"You really like him."

Maybe she did.

More than she wanted to admit.

---

But as the months passed, something continued bothering Adrian.

It started with little things.

Whenever he mentioned books, Luana looked uninterested.

Whenever he brought up authors, she changed the subject.

Whenever he talked about stories, she quickly steered the conversation elsewhere.

One evening, Adrian frowned.

"Have you finished that novel we talked about?"

"What novel?"

"The one from the bookstore."

Luana blinked.

"What bookstore?"

Adrian stared at her.

"The bookstore where we met."

"Oh."

She laughed awkwardly.

"I don't really go to bookstores."

Adrian froze.

For a second, confusion flickered across his face.

Then Luana continued talking as though nothing strange had happened.

And Adrian quickly dismissed the feeling.

People changed.

Two years was a long time.

Maybe she wasn't interested in books anymore.

Maybe she had outgrown that phase.

Maybe he was simply remembering things incorrectly.

Whatever the reason, he pushed the thought aside.

Because despite everything, he genuinely cared about Luana.

He enjoyed spending time with her.

And she clearly cared about him too.

So he ignored the growing feeling that something wasn't quite right.

What Adrian didn't know was that fate wasn't finished with him yet.

Because somewhere across town, sitting quietly in her favorite bookstore, was a girl named Liana.

A girl who still loved books.

A girl he had never truly forgotten.

And very soon, their paths would cross again.
