Two Alphas who had been inseparable since junior high.
Adrian was pure sunshine, while Noah was a ghost who preferred the quiet.
Yet, Adrian was Noah's only exception, the only noise he could ever tolerate.
Everything shattered during their high school years.
Hit by his first rut, Noah's subconscious laid his deepest truth bare in a vivid wet dream.
The boy tangled in his sheets with him wasn't an Omega. It was Adrian.
Now, they were at the University.
Every smile, every touch, every shared moment blurs the line between friendship and something far more dangerous.
How long can Noah keep pretending that Adrian is just his best friend... when his heart has loved him all along?
Chapter 1
The apartment was filled with a comfortable silence, save for the furious tapping on a mechanical keyboard and the sound of game audio.
Adrian was sitting on the floor, buried under a mountain of data sheets on the coffee table, while Noah lay on the sofa with his phone in hand.
Noah stared at his game screen, but his mind had long drifted elsewhere.
After a heavy silence, he finally broke the quiet.
Noah
"What do you think about Alpha and Alpha relationships?"
Adrian didn't lift his eyes from his laptop screen.
His fingers kept typing away at his software simulation, yet his attention shifted instantly to the boy on the sofa.
He was always good at multitasking, especially when it came to Noah.
Adrian
"Nothing's wrong with it. Look at us, we're Alphas and we're doing great."
Noah scoffed, rolling his eyes at the screen as his character died in the game. He knew Adrian was just teasing him.
Noah
"I mean a romantic relationship."
Adrian paused his typing for a split second, then resumed with a casual shrug.
Adrian
"Still the same. Times have changed, Noah. It's quite common these days to see Alpha-Alpha couples, or even Omega-Omega and Beta-Beta. The world isn't as rigid as it used to be."
Hearing those words, a faint, bittersweet warmth bloomed inside Noah's chest.
Living in a modern society meant Adrian's mindset wasn't trapped in traditional, conservative views.
Noah
*He doesn't find it disgusting. He thinks it's normal.*
Noah
*For a second, my stupid heart actually dared to hope. But then again... he was speaking generally, not about us.*
Adrian’s fingers finally stopped dancing across his mechanical keyboard.
The sudden silence in the room made the atmosphere shift.
He turned his body around, looking up at Noah who was still lying on the sofa.
Adrian
"Why the sudden question?"
Noah caught Adrian's gaze and stiffened for a fraction of a second. He quickly looked away, staring back at his phone screen to hide the slight panic in his eyes.
Noah
"Nothing. Just asking."
Adrian narrowed his eyes playfully, clearly not buying the nonchalant answer.
Noah
"Yeah. I've just been seeing a lot of couples like that lately."
Adrian let out a soft hum and nodded in agreement.
It made sense; with their modern campus environment, Alpha-Alpha couples were definitely becoming more visible and expressive these days.
Adrian
"Fair enough. They do look pretty good together, honestly."
Adrian smiled, entirely satisfied with the answer before turning back to his laptop.
He had no reason to suspect that Noah’s eyes weren't actually looking at the couples on campus, they were only looking at him.
As Adrian turned his back and plunged once again into his world of formulas and structural models, the room fell quiet.
Slowly, Noah lowered his phone. His gaze drifted away from his game, landing softly on the back of Adrian’s head.
Noah
*the truth is, every time I see them, I can't help but wonder... what if that were us?*
Chapter 2: Sweet Poison
The bright morning sun filtered through the blinds, waking Noah from his sleep.
He blinked, slightly dazed as he realized he was lying on his bed. The last thing he remembered was playing games on the living room sofa last night.
As Noah turned his head, his heart leaped into his throat. Right there, sharing the same pillow, was Adrian.
They had shared a bed countless times since they were kids. It shouldn't have been a big deal.
But now, with his feelings growing heavier by the day, looking at Adrian this close felt like torture.
Noah traced Adrian's handsome features with his eyes—the soft breathing, and the messy brown hair that partly veiled his face.
Unable to resist, Noah slowly reached out, his fingers hovering just millimeters away, wanting to gently brush the stray hairs away from Adrian's eyes.
But before he could, Adrian’s hand shot up in his sleep, blindly catching Noah’s wrist.
Adrian cracked his eyes open, flashing a sleepy, dimpled smile without letting go of Noah's hand.
Noah’s heart hammered violently against his ribs, deafening his ears.
Panicking from the proximity, he abruptly yanked his hand away and scrambled out of bed.
Noah
"Get up. You have an early class today. Don't complain to me if you're late."
Without waiting for a reply, Noah rushed straight into the bathroom, trying to wash away the burning heat on his face with cold water.
Stepping out of the bathroom twenty minutes later, a warm, savory aroma greeted him. On the kitchen counter sat a simple breakfast Adrian had put together just some toast and eggs.
Adrian
"Breakfast is ready. Eat up while it's hot. I'm hitting the shower now!"
Adrian patted Noah's shoulder casually before disappearing into the bathroom, leaving Noah alone in the kitchen.
Noah stared at the plate of food, his chest tightening.
It was exactly this. It was Adrian's effortless, domestic kindness that made it impossible for Noah to kill his feelings.
Noah sat down at the dining table, staring at the simple breakfast. He took a bite of the toast. Objectively, it was just a regular, ordinary breakfast. Yet, somehow, it tasted better than anything he had ever eaten at any fancy restaurant.
It was a strange, suffocating feeling. Eating this food made him feel incredibly happy and deeply miserable all at the same time.
Noah
*Why do you have to do this to me, Adrian?*
Noah
*Sometimes, it hurts so much that I think it’s better for me to just distance myself from you.*
Noah
*But how am I supposed to do that... when we've been inseparable for as long as I can remember?*
