Blood Line And Blackrooms
Move in day : Episode 1
Mara Vale
I’m actually here
Her voice fogs the car window a little. The campus rises in front of them, all red brick and glass catching the afternoon sun.
Althea Grey
You okay, honey?
Mara drags her eyes from the rows of dorms and forces a smile.
Casimir Grey
Well don’t just take it in, help me with these boxes before my back quits.
He pops the trunk. Cardboard boxes, two suitcases, and one beat‑up duffel with a torn strap.
Mara steps out. The air smells like cut grass and car exhaust and something fried from the food trucks parked along the sidewalk. Voices everywhere. Laughter, parents calling out, rolling suitcases clacking over the pavement.
For a second she feels small. Like she could get swallowed up and no one would notice.
Althea Grey
Dorm’s that way, right? Hale Hall?
Mara Vale
Yeah. Fourth floor.
She grips one of the boxes. The bottom bows a little and she hugs it tighter to her chest.
They weave through the crowd, past groups of girls already huddled up, boys tossing a football dangerously close to a car, some guy with a speaker blasting music. People already look like they belong.
Mara feels like a visitor.
[Inside Hale Hall – Lobby]
The lobby is chaos in fluorescent lighting. A long check‑in table, RA with a clipboard, parents arguing with elevators, someone dragging a mini fridge.
Move in day part 2: Episode 2
The name still sits weird on her tongue some days. She watches the RA scan the list, scribble something, and hand over a key.
RA:
Room 412. Elevator’s probably full, stairs are faster. Welcome to Crestwood.
Althea Grey
Fourth floor, great. Leg day.
Casimir Grey
You needed leg day.
Mara half laughs, half winces as they head for the stairs.
[Stairwell – Between Floors]
Feet thudding on concrete, the echo of voices bouncing up and down. Someone brushes past them going down, breathless, carrying a laundry basket already overflowing.
Mara’s box digs into her arms. Sweat pricks at the back of her neck.
Casimir Grey
You sure you don’t want us to stay in a hotel nearby tonight? Just in case you need—
Mara Vale
Dad, I’ll be fine.
She says it quick, like if she says it fast enough it’ll be true.
At the landing, she pauses, catching her breath. A window looks out over the quad. From here, the students look like ants. A whole new world moving without her.
Something shifts at the edge of her vision.
Across the quad, in the shadow of the opposite dorm, someone stands alone by the entrance. Not moving. Just watching the crowd.
Tall. Dark clothes, too heavy for how warm it is. Hands in pockets, hood up even though the sun is out.
Dorm room: Episode 3
Althea Grey
Mara? You coming?
She blinks, looks back. The figure’s still there, but the angle’s bad now. Just a slice of black hoodie and pale jawline.
Mara tells herself she’s imagining the chill that runs down her spine.
The fourth floor is a mess of open doors, posters half taped up, music bleeding from somebody’s speaker. The air is hotter here, thick with perfume and cardboard dust.
The door is propped open with a sneaker. One side of the room is already halfway claimed — suitcase on the bed, a pile of clothes, a stack of polaroids waiting to be hung.
Althea Grey
Oh, looks like your roommate beat you here.
Casimir Grey
Good. She can help carry stuff.
Mara sets her box on the bare mattress on the other side and takes a breath.
The dorm smells like hot plastic and coffee. Boxes make a maze; tape leaves sticky trenches on the carpet. Mara hauls a duffel, her parents argue about directions like they're map apps that married poorly. Her mom hums a college jingle she learned in 1987 and lifts a plant with the kind of gentle careful only someone who’s raised a person has.
