Chapter 1 – Welcome to Westbridge

Boston.

Late August

The city carried that familiar end-of-summer warmth, the kind that made the red-brick buildings of Westbridge University glow beneath the afternoon sun.

Hundreds of freshmen poured through the front gates, dragging suitcases, carrying coffee cups, laughing with strangers who would soon become friends—or enemies.

Some came chasing dreams.

Some came chasing freedom.

Some came because their parents expected greatness.

And then there were people like Evelyn Carter.

She came because she refused to be anything less than the best.

The black SUV rolled to a stop outside Hawthorne Hall.

A driver stepped out first.

"Miss Carter, we've arrived."

Evelyn removed her headphones, looked at the campus through the tinted window, and smiled faintly.

"So this is Westbridge."

Her father had wanted to accompany her.

She refused.

Her mother insisted on hiring private security.

She refused that too.

She wanted one thing.

A fresh start.

Not as the Carter heiress.

Just...

Evelyn.

She stepped out wearing light-wash jeans, white sneakers, and a fitted black top beneath an oversized beige jacket. Her dark hair was tied into a neat ponytail, sunglasses resting on her head.

Simple.

Elegant.

Confident.

The driver reached for her luggage.

"I can carry it."

"But—"

"I said I can."

He immediately stepped back.

She wasn't rude.

She simply hated people assuming she needed help.

Across campus...

A motorcycle roared into the parking lot.

Heads turned instantly.

The rider removed his helmet.

Messy brown hair.

Lazy grin.

Dark eyes filled with amusement.

"Noah!"

Two boys waved from the entrance.

"Liam!"

"Ethan!"

Noah parked before pulling both into a quick hug.

"You idiots actually made it."

Liam laughed.

"We've been here for twenty minutes."

"You were late."

"I stopped for coffee."

"You stop for coffee every day."

"Exactly."

Ethan adjusted his glasses.

"You'll be late to your own wedding one day."

Noah shrugged.

"Only if she's worth waiting for."

Liam groaned dramatically.

"I already hate every girl that's going to fall for you."

Noah smirked.

"They'll survive."

Meanwhile...

Evelyn entered Hawthorne Hall.

The lobby buzzed with nervous students.

Someone accidentally bumped into her shoulder.

"Oh my God! I'm so sorry!"

A blonde girl nearly dropped three folders while trying to apologize.

Evelyn caught two before they hit the floor.

"You okay?"

The girl blinked.

"You...caught them."

"I have hands."

For a second...

Then both laughed.

"I'm Mia."

"Evelyn."

"Business major?"

"Yeah."

Mia's eyes widened.

"Me too!"

"What are the chances?"

"I'm taking that as fate."

Evelyn chuckled.

"I don't believe in fate."

"Then destiny?"

"I believe in coincidence."

Mia smiled.

"We're going to be friends anyway."

For reasons she couldn't explain...

Evelyn didn't disagree.

Orientation began thirty minutes later.

Nearly five hundred freshmen gathered inside the university auditorium.

Dean Harrison welcomed everyone before announcing one final surprise.

"To help you meet new people, we're assigning mixed groups for today's campus challenge."

Groans echoed through the room.

A giant screen lit up.

Group numbers appeared one by one.

Mia grabbed Evelyn's arm.

"Please don't separate us."

The screen stopped.

GROUP 17

Evelyn Carter.

Mia Thompson.

Noah Walker.

Liam Hayes.

Ethan Brooks.

Noah raised one eyebrow.

"Looks like we're stuck together."

Liam grinned.

"Hopefully they're normal."

Ethan looked at the names.

"We'll find out."

At almost the same moment...

Evelyn and Noah looked across the auditorium.

Neither smiled.

Neither looked away.

Just a brief moment.

Two strangers.

Both with the same confidence.

Both silently thinking the exact same thing.

"This person looks like trouble."

Neither of them knew...

By the end of today...

The first shot in their war would already have been fired.

Chapter 2 – The First Battle

The auditorium emptied as students gathered with their assigned teams.

"Group Seventeen, this way!" a student volunteer called.

Evelyn adjusted the strap of her backpack while Mia bounced beside her.

"I hope they're not weird."

"You've known them for exactly thirty seconds."

"And?"

"You've already judged them."

"I judge everyone."

Evelyn laughed softly.

"Fair enough."

Near the campus fountain...

Three boys were already waiting.

Liam was busy eating chips.

Ethan was scrolling through his phone.

Noah leaned against the stone railing with one hand in his pocket, looking completely unbothered by the surrounding crowd.

The moment Evelyn walked over...

Noah looked up.

For a second...

Their eyes met.

Something about the way neither looked away made the air feel oddly tense.

Mia broke the silence.

"Hi! I'm Mia."

Liam grinned.

"Liam."

"Ethan."

"Noah."

"Evelyn."

Short.

Simple.

No smiles.

No unnecessary friendliness.

Noah tilted his head slightly.

"So..."

"Business major?"

"Yes."

"Looks like you're the serious type."

Evelyn crossed her arms.

"And you look like someone who talks before thinking."

Liam almost choked on his chips.

Ethan quietly looked up from his phone.

Noah blinked.

Then...

He smiled.

"Interesting."

A volunteer handed every team an envelope.

"Welcome to the Freshman Challenge!"

"You'll solve clues across campus."

"First team to finish wins dinner vouchers."

Liam whispered dramatically.

"We're winning this."

Evelyn calmly opened the envelope.

"The first clue says the oldest building on campus."

She started walking immediately.

Noah frowned.

"Hold on."

"What?"

"Maybe we should discuss it."

"I already know the answer."

"And if you're wrong?"

"I won't be."

She continued walking.

Noah laughed.

"She's bossy."

Without turning around, Evelyn replied,

"I prefer efficient."

Twenty minutes later...

Group Seventeen had somehow reached the final clue before almost everyone else.

Unfortunately...

The last puzzle required five people to solve together.

Noah reached for one side of the wooden puzzle board.

At the exact same moment...

Evelyn reached for it too.

Their hands bumped.

Neither moved.

"You can let go," Noah said casually.

"You can."

"I touched it first."

"I did."

"You wish."

"You need glasses."

Liam sighed dramatically.

"They're arguing over wood."

Mia whispered,

"I think this is kind of entertaining."

Ethan nodded.

"I've already started recording."

After several minutes of bickering...

They finally solved the puzzle.

"Congratulations!" the volunteer announced.

"Group Seventeen finishes first!"

The five received vouchers.

Liam raised both fists.

"YES!"

Mia cheered with him.

Ethan clapped once.

Noah looked toward Evelyn.

"You know..."

"You weren't completely useless."

Evelyn smiled sweetly.

"I'm sorry."

His eyebrow lifted.

"I didn't realize compliments were so difficult for you."

He laughed.

"Touche."

The campus café was overflowing with students celebrating orientation.

Since they had won together...

They reluctantly agreed to use the vouchers together.

"This feels wrong," Evelyn muttered.

"I agree," Noah replied.

"I've never voluntarily eaten with someone this stubborn."

She looked at him.

"You should try it more often."

"I'd rather fight bears."

"You'd lose."

He smiled.

"You sound confident."

"I don't sound confident."

"I am."

While everyone waited for their drinks...

The barista accidentally called out the wrong order.

Noah reached for an iced coffee.

At the exact same second...

Evelyn grabbed it too.

"It's mine."

"No."

"My name was called."

"So was mine."

"It's clearly mine."

"It's clearly not."

They stared.

Liam whispered to Ethan,

"Five..."

"Four..."

"Three..."

Mia covered her face.

"They're about to start."

Noah suddenly let go.

"My mistake."

Evelyn smirked.

"I thought so."

She took one sip...

Instantly frowned.

"...Black coffee?"

She hated black coffee.

From across the counter...

The real barista shouted,

"Oops! Sorry! Wrong order!"

Noah burst into laughter.

"I knew it wasn't yours."

Evelyn slowly looked at him.

"You..."

"You did that on purpose."

"I might have."

"You are unbelievable."

"And yet..."

He stepped a little closer, lowering his voice just enough for only her to hear.

"You still fell for it."

She narrowed her eyes.

"Congratulations."

"You've officially become the most annoying person I've met today."

He smiled wider.

"Only today?"

She leaned in slightly, matching his confidence.

"Don't worry."

"You have plenty of time to secure first place."

For the first time...

Noah's grin turned genuine.

"Challenge accepted."

Neither of them noticed...

Liam was already nudging Ethan.

"I give them two months before they're dating."

Ethan shook his head.

"I give them two weeks before one of them commits murder."

Mia watched Evelyn walk ahead with a tiny smile.

"They're definitely going to make freshman year interesting."

As Noah caught up beside Evelyn, she didn't even look at him.

But when he deliberately matched her pace, refusing to fall behind or move ahead, she noticed.

And despite herself..

The corner of her lips twitched for just a second.

Neither of them would admit it.

But the game had begun.

Chapter 3 – One Seat Too Many

Monday.

The first official day of classes.

Westbridge University looked completely different from orientation day. Students hurried through the walkways with coffee cups, laptops, and backpacks slung over one shoulder.

Freshman excitement had been replaced by reality.

Assignments.

Deadlines.

Professors.

Evelyn arrived fifteen minutes early.

Always.

She hated rushing.

Entering the Business Management lecture hall, she scanned the room before choosing a seat in the middle—not too close to the front, not too close to the back.

Perfect.

She placed her notebook on the desk beside her.

Reserved.

For Mia.

Five minutes later...

Mia rushed in, breathing heavily.

"I swear this campus is built to make people suffer."

"You woke up late."

"...Maybe."

"You definitely did."

"I definitely did."

Both laughed.

Across campus...

Three boys walked toward the same lecture hall.

Liam yawned.

"I already miss summer."

Ethan adjusted his backpack.

"We've had one class."

"And?"

"I'm exhausted."

Noah opened the classroom door.

The room was almost full.

Only one empty seat remained.

Right beside...

Evelyn Carter.

Noah looked at the seat.

Then at her.

A slow grin spread across his face.

"Oh, this is fate."

Evelyn looked up.

"No."

"It's bad luck."

Ignoring her comment, Noah walked over and dropped into the empty chair.

"You can move."

"I'm comfortable."

"There are other seats."

"There aren't."

She glanced around.

Unfortunately...

He was right.

The professor entered before she could argue.

"Good morning, everyone."

"I'm Professor Williams."

"For the next four years, some of you will become successful entrepreneurs."

He smiled.

"The rest will blame the economy."

Laughter echoed through the room.

Halfway through the lecture...

Professor Williams asked a question.

"What is the most important quality of a leader?"

Hands shot up.

Including Evelyn's.

Including Noah's.

The professor pointed toward Noah first.

"Confidence."

He answered without hesitation.

"If people don't trust your confidence, they won't trust your decisions."

Professor Williams nodded.

"Interesting."

He turned toward Evelyn.

"Miss Carter?"

She calmly replied,

"Adaptability."

The room fell silent.

"A confident leader who refuses to adapt eventually fails."

Several students nodded.

Professor Williams smiled.

"Excellent."

Then he looked between them.

"Both answers are correct."

Noah leaned closer just enough for only Evelyn to hear.

"I still think mine was better."

Without looking at him, she whispered back,

"I know."

He blinked.

She continued writing.

"I also know you're wrong."

After class...

Students gathered outside.

(Liam already saw noah looking and arguing with evelyn from outside the classroom)

Liam wrapped an arm around Noah's shoulder.

"I've never seen someone argue during their first lecture."

"I wasn't arguing."

"You were flirting."

Noah stopped walking.

"I was what?"

"You smiled."

"So?"

"You only smile like that when you're interested."

"I'm interested."

Liam's eyes widened.

"Really?"

"In beating her."

Ethan sighed.

"Sure."

Meanwhile...

Mia looked at Evelyn.

"So..."

"What?"

"He's kind of handsome."

Evelyn didn't even look up from her phone.

"I hadn't noticed."

"Liar."

"I don't waste time looking at arrogant boys."

"You noticed."

"I noticed he talks too much."

That afternoon...

Freshmen were assigned their first semester project.

Professor Williams clapped once.

"This project counts for forty percent of your final grade."

Groans filled the classroom.

"You'll work in pairs."

Evelyn silently prayed.

Anyone but Noah.

Professor Williams began reading names.

"Evelyn Carter..."

She looked up.

"...Noah Walker."

Silence.

Noah slowly turned his head.

Evelyn closed her eyes for one second.

"No."

Professor Williams looked confused.

"No?"

"I mean..."

She forced a polite smile.

"No problem."

Noah couldn't stop himself from laughing.

"Oh, this semester is going to be fun."

She looked directly at him.

"For one of us."

"Oh?"

"The other is going to regret every minute."

For the first time...

There was no teasing in Noah's eyes.

Just excitement.

He extended his hand.

"Partners?"

Evelyn looked at it for a long moment.

Then shook it.

Her grip was firm.

His matched hers.

Neither let go immediately.

They stared at each other.

Two people.

Too competitive.

Too stubborn.

Too proud.

This wasn't the beginning of a partnership.

It was the beginning of a war.
