Hate Is a Strong Motive

"Hate is a strong motive" chapter 1-2

*Premise:*

Lily Reyes is the top scholar, rule-follower, and student council president at Saint Augustine University. Zach Alvarez is the varsity captain, campus bad boy, and heir to a rival company that just bought out Lily’s dad’s business. They’ve hated each other since freshman year. Now they’re forced to work together for a national competition that could save both their future .

#### *Chapter 1: Collision*

Saint Augustine University didn’t have enough chairs for two people who refused to sit in the same room.

Lily Reyes walked into Dean Torres’ office 3 minutes early, color-coded folder in hand, blazer buttoned to the top. She was ready.

Zach Alvarez walked in 3 minutes late, varsity jacket half-zipped, hair still wet from practice.

Their eyes met. And it was not a rom-com moment.

“Miss Reyes. Mr. Alvarez,” Dean Torres said, looking exhausted already. “Sit.”

There were two chairs. Only one table.

Lily took the left chair. Zach took the right. The space between them could’ve fit the Pacific Ocean.

“The University is sending one team to the National Business Case Competition in Manila,” Dean said. “Winner gets 2 million pesos in funding. And…” he hesitated. “Saint Augustine is merging with Alvarez Holdings for research grants. So you two are the team.”

Lily’s folder crinkled in her grip. _Alvarez Holdings._ The company that bought her dad’s logistics firm last year. 40 people lost their jobs. Her dad included.

Zach smirked. “Great. I get stuck with Miss Perfect.”

Lily didn’t look at him. “And I get stuck with Mr. I-Skipped-Class-To-Play-Basketball.”

Dean Torres stood up. “You have 8 weeks. Don’t kill each other. You’re dismissed.”

Zach stood first. “Come on, Princess. We’ve got work to do.”

Lily grabbed her folder. “Don’t call me that.”

He paused at the door, glancing back. “Then earn a different name.”

The door shut. And the war began.

*Chapter 2: The First Fight*

The next day, 8:00 AM sharp.

Lily was already in the empty debate room with a whiteboard, 3 markers, and a printed timeline. She didn’t believe in “winging it.”

Zach walked in at 8:17 with a coffee in one hand and his phone in the other. No folder. No notes.

“You’re late,” Lily said without looking up.

“Traffic,” he lied. It was a 5-minute walk from the gym.

She finally turned. “We don’t have time to waste, Alvarez. The proposal is due in 8 weeks, but the first draft is due Friday.”

Zach dropped into a chair backwards. “Relax, Reyes. We’ll think of something.”

“‘Think of something’ isn’t a strategy.” She wrote on the board: _Sustainable Logistics for Rural Farmers._ “My idea. We partner with co-ops, use AI for route optimization, cut waste by 30%.”

Zach took a sip of coffee. “Boring.”

Lily’s marker stopped. “Excuse me?”

“It’s boring. Judges have seen 50 ‘save the farmers’ decks. We need something with impact. Something loud.” He grabbed a marker and wrote over her title: _Alvarez SpeedChain. Drone delivery for Metro Manila in under 20 minutes._

Lily stared at it like it personally insulted her. “Drone delivery? Do you know how much that costs? And the permits? That’s not realistic for a student competition.”

“It’s realistic for Alvarez Holdings,” he said, too casually. “We can fund it.”

There it was. The name again.

She dropped her marker. It clattered on the floor. “Right. Because this is just another way for your family to flex money over everyone else. Like what you did to my dad.”

The room went quiet.

Zach’s jaw tightened. The smirk vanished. “Don’t.”

“Don’t what? Bring up facts? 40 families, Zach. Including mine. Your company called it ‘restructuring.’ My dad called it losing everything.”

He stood up fast. Chair scraping. “You think I had anything to do with that? I was 17. I didn’t even sit in those board meetings.”

“But you’re benefiting from it now,” she shot back. “You, the heir, the varsity star, the guy who gets whatever he wants.”

“And you’re Miss Saint Augustine,” he said, voice low. “The girl who thinks being perfect makes her better than everyone.”

Lily grabbed her folder. “I’m done. Do your drones without me.”

She was at the door when he said, “You walk out now, we both lose. Dean said one team. One.”

Her hand froze on the doorknob.

He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “Look… I don’t like you either, Reyes. But if we’re stuck, then we’re stuck. So pick. Drones or farmers. But we pick _together_.”

Lily didn’t turn around. “I’m not picking drones.”

“Then we’re deadlocked.”

She left. The door slammed.

Zach stared at the whiteboard. _Sustainable Logistics_ crossed out. _SpeedChain_ on top. And between them, nothing but white space.

(3) Hate is a strong motive

*Chapter 3: Late Night Library*

Dean Torres had one rule: “If you’re not progressing by Friday, I’m assigning you new partners.”

Neither Lily nor Zach wanted that. Losing looked worse than working together.

So at 9:47 PM on Thursday, they both showed up at the Saint Augustine Library. Separately.

Lily took Table 4 by the window. Stacks of journals, a laptop, headphones in. No-nonsense.

Zach took Table 7 by the printers. Hoodie on, feet up, one notebook. Completely empty.

They didn’t speak for an hour. The only sound was the AC and Lily’s pen scratching.

At 11:02 PM, the librarian, Ms. Cruz, did her rounds. “Library closes at 11:30, kids. Everyone out after.”

Lily’s head snapped up. “11:30? The draft is due at 8 AM.”

Zach groaned. “Great.”

Ms. Cruz left. And at 11:29, the lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then the main doors locked with a heavy _click_.

“Are you kidding me?” Lily was already at the door, tugging. Locked.

Zach tried his phone. “No signal. The building’s a dead zone after hours.”

“We’re locked in.” Lily’s voice was tight. Not panicked. Just… furious. “With you.”

“Wow. The feeling’s mutual, Princess.”

“Don’t call me—” She cut herself off. Breathed. “Fine. We have 8 hours until security opens at 8. We’re not wasting it.”

She dragged her stuff back to Table 4. “You. Sit.”

Zach raised an eyebrow but moved. He dropped across from her. “What’s the plan, Boss?”

She pushed a blank paper between them. “Truce. For 8 hours only. We combine our ideas or we fail. Your choice.”

He looked at the paper. Then at her. Dark circles under her eyes she was trying to hide. Hair coming loose from her bun. She looked… tired. Not perfect. Just human.

“Fine,” he said. “Truce.”

They started messy. He threw out ideas, she shot them down. She defended her data, he called it “textbook.” At 1 AM, they were arguing over profit margins in whispers so they wouldn’t wake the security guard.

At 2:14 AM, Zach’s stomach growled. Loudly.

Lily didn’t look up. She just slid half her granola bar across the table.

He stared at it. “You brought snacks?”

“I prepare.”

He took it. “Thanks.”

Silence. But it wasn’t hostile anymore.

At 3 AM, Lily’s head started dipping. She caught herself on her laptop.

“Hey,” Zach said softer. “Sleep for 20 minutes. I’ll watch your stuff.”

She blinked at him. Suspicious. “Why would you—”

“Because if you pass out and drool on the draft, we both fail. And I hate losing.”

That made her huff a laugh. Small. Real. She put her head down on her folded arms.

Zach didn’t work. He just… watched. The way her shoulders finally relaxed. The way she muttered something about “route maps” in her sleep.

At 4:30 AM she jolted awake. “Did I— how long—”

“20 minutes turned into an hour and a half. My bad,” he lied.

She rubbed her eyes. “We should finish.”

By 6 AM, they had something. It wasn’t drones. It wasn’t just farmers. It was a hybrid: _EcoRoute._ AI-optimized delivery using electric bikes for rural areas, scaling to electric vans in the city. Low cost. High impact. Scalable.

Lily read it over. “This… this could actually work.”

Zach leaned back. “Told you. Loud _and_ smart.”

She looked up and, for the first time, didn’t roll her eyes. “Thanks. For… staying.”

He shrugged, but his ears were red. “Truce, remember?”

At 7:58 AM, security unlocked the doors. They walked out together, messy, exhausted, with one shared USB.

Outside, sunlight hit. Lily paused. “Don’t tell anyone we were locked in.”

Zach smirked, but it was smaller now. Less sharp. “Your secret’s safe with me, Reyes.”

She walked away fast. But she was smiling. Just a little.

Hate is a strong motive chapter 4-5

*Chapter 4: Accidental Save*

Friday, 10 AM. Business Strategy Class.

Dean Torres had everyone in a circle. “Quick presentations. 2 minutes. Sell me your draft idea.”

Lily hated impromptu speaking. She liked scripts. Slides. Prep time.

Zach didn’t care. He could talk his way out of anything.

One by one, students went. Then it was Lily’s turn.

She stood. USB in hand. Laptop open to their _EcoRoute_ deck. She got three words out:

Lily: “Good morning. Our—”

Her voice died.

It happened sometimes when she was stressed. Her throat would close. Blank. 40 people staring. Dean watching. And across the circle, Zach.

She gripped the laptop. Her hands were shaking.

Dean:“Miss Reyes?”

Dean prompted.

Nothing came out. Her face went red.

From across the room, Zach stood up. No warning.

Zach:“Uh, Dean, can I?”

He didn’t wait for an answer. He walked over, took the clicker from her frozen hand. His fingers brushed hers. Cold.

Lily looked up at him, panicked.

Lily:_What are you doing?_

Zach didn’t look at her. He looked at the class.

Zach:“Our project is called _EcoRoute_.”

His voice was steady. Casual. Like he’d rehearsed it.

He clicked. Slide 1. Their logo.

Lily:“For the next 2 minutes, I’m Lily.”

He shot her a tiny smirk.

Lily:“And she’s me. Deal?”

A few people laughed. The tension broke.

Lily exhaled. She didn’t sit down. She stood beside him.

Zach ran through the deck. Fast, confident, but he used all her words. Her data. Her phrasing. “As Lily outlined in our research…” “The rural impact numbers here are hers…”

He gave her the credit. Every time.

At 2:01, he stopped. “And that’s _EcoRoute_. Thank you.”

The class clapped. Dean nodded.

Dean: “Good recovery, Mr. Alvarez. Miss Reyes, you okay?”

Lily found her voice. Small, but there.

Lily: “Yes, sir. Thank you.”

Class ended. People filed out.

Lily stopped Zach at the door.

Lily: “You didn’t have to do that.”

He shrugged, shoving his hands in his pockets. Lily:“You would’ve done it for me. Maybe.”

“I would’ve,” she said honestly.

He looked surprised by that.

Zach:“Huh.”

She held out the USB.

Lily:“We’re even now. For the granola bar too.”

He took it, but didn’t leave. “You freeze a lot?”

Lily:“Only when I care too much,”

she admitted. Then realized what she said.

Lily:“I— I have to go to the council room.”

She walked off fast.

Zach watched her go. He was still holding the USB tight.

Later that day, a note was in her council folder. No name. Just Zach’s messy handwriting:

_For future freezes: Breathe. 4 seconds in. 4 out. It works. -Z_

She kept it. Tucked it in her planner.

*End of Chapter 4*

*Chapter 5: His World*

Saturday. 6 PM. Saint Augustine Gym.

Lily was not a “sports person.” She was a “bring-a-book-to-the-game” person.

But _EcoRoute_ needed a “team-building + community engagement” section for the deck. And Dean’s exact words were: “Get out of the library, Miss Reyes. Talk to people.”

So she was here. Blazer over jeans. Clipboard in hand. Looking completely out of place.

The gym was loud. Varsity jerseys everywhere. Chanting. Sneakers squeaking.

And at center court, Zach.

He was different here. No smirk. No attitude. Just focused. Sweat on his forehead, jersey #7, calling plays. When he scored, the whole gym exploded.

Game ended. 78-64. Win.

Zach spotted her the second he walked off the court. He froze mid-towel. “Reyes? What are you doing here?”

“Market research,” she said, holding up her clipboard like a shield. “For EcoRoute. I need to observe… team dynamics. And… your audience.”

He blinked. Then laughed. Actually laughed. “You came to a game for homework.”

“It’s for the competition.”

“Right.” He ran a hand through his wet hair. “Give me 10 minutes. Don’t leave.”

He came back in a hoodie and slides, hair still damp. “Come on.”

He dragged her past the stands to the bleachers. Sat her down next to his team.

“Guys, this is Lily. She’s… helping with a project.” He didn’t say “enemy.” He didn’t say “hate her.” He just said “helping.”

His teammates nodded. One tossed her a bottle of water. “You Zach’s tutor or something?”

Lily choked on air. “No—”

“Something like that,” Zach cut in, fast.

For the next hour, she watched. Zach wasn’t the campus bad boy here. He was the captain who remembered everyone’s name. Who gave a first-year a pep talk after he missed a shot. Who split his post-game Gatorade with the benchwarmer who never played.

“Why’d you do that?” she asked him after. They were walking out, gym emptying.

“Do what?”

“Share your drink. Cheer for Mateo when he sat the whole game.”

Zach kicked a rock. “Because someone did it for me when I was 15 and riding the bench. You don’t forget that.”

Lily stopped walking. “I thought… I thought you didn’t care about anyone but yourself.”

He looked at her. Really looked. Under the gym lights, he didn’t look like Alvarez Holdings’ heir. He just looked 20. Tired. Real.

“Maybe you don’t know me,” he said quietly.

She didn’t have an answer for that.

At the exit, his teammate Marco yelled, “Yo, Zach! Who’s the girl? She’s kinda—”

“Shut up, Marco,” Zach said, but he wasn’t mad. His ears were red again.

He walked Lily to the gate. “Thanks. For coming.”

“Thanks. For… not being a jerk for 5 minutes,” she replied.

He grinned. “I’m keeping score. You’re down to 4 minutes now.”

She rolled her eyes, but she was smiling when she left.

On the bus ride home, she opened her notes. Under _Team Dynamics_ she wrote: _He leads with people, not just plays._

And under that, in smaller letters: _Maybe I was wrong about him._
