The Chennai heat was already sizzling at 8:30 AM, but inside the District Collector's grand bungalow, the atmosphere was chaotic for

​"Pattu, dharma adi vaanguva nee (you'll get a thrashing). Give it back!"

Madhavan, dressed in a crisp, ironed white linen shirt and formal trousers, was on his knees under his massive teakwood dining table. He was pleading.

The opponent? A fluffy, sleek, white and grey cat with piercing green eyes. Pattu was currently sitting on his official ID badge, her paws firmly planted over the state emblem.

"Meow," Pattu replied, yawning right in his face.

​"Please di. Important meeting with the Chief Secretary today. Konjam parthu sei (hey please Show some mercy)," Madhavan murmured, his voice completely losing the authoritative edge he used at work. He gently extended a hand, but Pattu immediately raised a warning paw.

Right on cue, the doorbell rang. Madhavan scrambled up, dusted his trousers, and rushed to open the door.

Vikram stood there in his sharp, khaki IPS uniform, police cap under his arm and aviators tucked into his shirt pocket, holding two parcels of breakfast.

"Madhavan! Enna da, ( hey Madhavan what man ) still not ready? The convoy is waiting outside and you look like you just fought a war," Vikram teased, walking in. He glanced at the dining table. "Ah. The Real Collector is putting you in your place again, huh?"

"She took my ID badge, Vikram. Keta muraikira (When I ask, she glares)," Madhavan said, looking completely helpless.

Vikram laughed loudly, walked over, and pulled out a small packet of treats from his pocket. He shook it. Rattle. Rattle.

Pattu's ears perked up. She instantly abandoned the ID badge, hopped off the table, and trotted elegantly toward Vikram, completely ignoring Madhavan.

​"See? You command a whole district, but you don't know how to handle a lady," Vikram smirked, tossing the badge to Madhavan. "Sari sari, ( ok ok ) eat quickly. We need to leave in ten minutes."

Madhavan sighed, picking up his badge. "Thanks da ( thanks man ) I don't know what I'd do without you."

Meanwhile, at the Government General Hospital, the vibe was loud, crowded, and fast paced.

Dr. Meenakshi was already in her white coat, a stethoscope slung around her neck, deftly checking a toddler's temperature while managing a mountain of patient charts.

​"Meena! Drink this coffee first, otherwise you'll faint before lunch," Dr. Priya said, sliding a paper cup onto the desk.

​"No time, Priya. Look at the OP line outside. Iniku enna therila, avlo kootam (Don't know why, it's so crowded today)," Meena replied, her eyes never leaving her prescription pad. "Did my mom call? Did Aadhav eat his cerelac?"

​"Yes, your mom called me because you weren't picking up. Aadhav kutty ( Adhav baby ) ate everything and he is busy playing with his blocks. Calm down," Priya said gently, patting her shoulder. "You need to stop stressing so much, Meena. You are doing great."

Meena paused for a second, a soft, weary smile touching her lips. "I can't help it, Priya. Everything I do now is for him. Avana nalla paathukanum, adhu dhaan (I must take good care of him, that's all)."

​"I know, di ( i know girl). But look at you you are thirty now. You carry the weight of the world on your shoulders," Priya sighed. "Your divorce is finalized. That toxic chapter is over. It's time to breathe a little."

Meena's expression hardened slightly, the protective walls instantly going up. "I am breathing. My work and my son that's my life. I don't need anything else."

Before Priya could argue, a staff nurse rushed in.

"Doctor! Emergency ward-la antha seven year old boy ku sudden a breathing difficulty( doctor! Emergency the seven year old boy in the ward is having breathingproblem ). Can you come quickly?"

Meena didn't waste a single second. She grabbed her stethoscope, her focus switching entirely to her duty. "Polam, ( let's go)."

Two completely different worlds. One, an introverted officer being bullied by his cat; the other, a fiercely protective mother fighting for her patients. They had no idea their lines were about to cross very soon.
