There was nothing remarkable about the leather-bound manuscript. To anyone else in the Bodleian Library, it was just another forgotten volume resting among Oxford’s endless shelves.
But the moment I touched it, I knew.
Something was wrong.
A late-September hush filled Duke Humfrey’s Reading Room. The summer crowds had vanished, and the autumn term had yet to begin. The library was quiet.
I had the archives all to myself.
Even then, I was surprised when Shelly stopped me at the call desk.

A mischievous smile crossed her face as she brushed dust from her argyle sweater. A stubborn lock of sandy hair slipped into her eyes.

Shelly disappeared into the archive and returned moments later with a thick, leather-bound manuscript.
She placed it gently on top of the pile, then leaned closer to examine it.

Shelly reached for the call slip, but it refused to budge, trapped between the cover and the first page.

She commented.
Muffled voices broke the library’s familiar silence.

I looked around, puzzled by the strange sounds.

Shelly looked up from the manuscript.
Faded traces of gold glimmered along its edges, but they couldn’t explain the faint, iridescent shimmer escaping from between the pages.
I blinked.

“Nothing.”
I pulled the manuscript toward me, my skin prickling the moment my fingers touched the leather.
Shelly’s fingers were still on the call slip, but this time it slipped free without resistance.
Hugging the manuscripts against my chest, I caught a strange scent that chased away the library’s familiar smell of old books and floor wax.

Shelly asked with a concerned frown.

“Fine. Just a bit tired,”
I murmured a quick thanks and lowered the heavy manuscript from my face.
My pace quickened as I crossed the Bodleian’s oldest wing, weaving past rows of worn Elizabethan desks polished by centuries of use.
Above me, stained-glass windows bathed the ancient library in soft light.
“God is my illumination,” proclaimed Oxford’s timeless motto.
Another American academic, Han Ji-won, was my only companion in the library that Friday night. Absorbed in her research, she barely looked up as I hurried past, hoping to avoid eye contact.
The old floorboards betrayed me with a loud creak.
My skin tingled, as it always did when another witch looked at me.

she called from the gloom. I smothered a sigh and stopped.

For reasons I couldn’t explain, I held the manuscripts closer and kept my distance, turning my body to keep them out of her sight.

I said, already heading toward the Selden End. My aunt Nam-ra had always warned me that one witch could never lie to another.
It had never stopped me from trying.

Ji-won made a sympathetic noise, but her eyes followed me.
Back at my usual seat by the arched windows, I carefully lowered the manuscripts onto the table. The strange volume still rested on top, as though it had chosen its place. A faded gold crest caught the light on its spine, the mark of Elias Ashmole. The name was familiar. Beneath the crest sat its designation number:
I reached out and touched the worn leather. A sharp jolt shot through my fingers, making me pull back but too late. The tingling raced up my arms, across my shoulders, and tightened the muscles in my neck.
Just as quickly, it vanished, leaving behind a strange, hollow sense of longing. Shaken, I stepped away from the table.
Even from a safe distance, the manuscript challenged everything I’d spent years building. I hadn’t crossed an ocean to embrace magic. I’d come to Oxford to finish my research and continue the life I’d chosen a life defined by logic, not spells.
I was the last of the Kim witches by birth, but a scholar by choice. After years of earning my doctorate, securing tenure, and building my academic career, I had left my family’s legacy behind. Magic belonged to my past.
My work demanded evidence, not instinct. Every conclusion had to be proven, every claim supported. There was no place in my research for a witch’s sixth sense.
Somehow, I’d called for the one alchemical manuscript I needed for my research. But the moment it touched my hands, I knew it was more than an ordinary book. It carried a strange power I couldn’t explain, and despite everything, I wanted to open it.

I closed my eyes and took a slow breath, filling my lungs with the library’s familiar scent. The Bodleian had always been my refuge a place untouched by the Kim family’s legacy. Here, I was a historian, not a witch.
Tucking my trembling hands beneath my arms, I stared at Ashmole 782 as twilight settled over the library, wondering whether to open it… or walk away.
My mother would know. He was the most powerful witch of his time the only person who might understand what was happening.
His magic had always been different. Even as a child, he had possessed abilities that surpassed most witches, along with a frightening intuition that allowed him to see truths hidden from others.
My mother’s younger sister, Aunt Kim Nam-ra, was a skilled witch as well. Her magic was more traditional mastery over potions, spells, and ancient witchcraft knowledge.
The world of historians knew nothing about my family’s secret, but in Madison, the small town where I had lived with Nam-ra since childhood, everyone knew the Kims were different.
My ancestors fled Korea centuries ago, escaping a world where magic had become dangerous. Their journey took them across continents before they finally settled in America.
But the Kim family’s past was never forgotten. Even generations after Kim Soran’s execution during the Salem witch trials, rumors of witchcraft still followed our bloodline.

Forgotten permission slips appeared just as they were needed, and no matter how chaotic my father’s study looked at night, it was always perfectly orderly by morning.
As a child, I once asked a friend’s mother why she washed dishes the ordinary way when she could simply use magic. Her confused expression made me realize something I had never understood before magic was not normal to everyone.

No one looking at him on the street would have guessed what he truly was. But behind the closed doors of our home, my mother was no ordinary person. He was a witch.
His movements grew calm and effortless, almost as if he floated. As he moved through the house, humming softly while gathering books and abandoned toys, his face gradually transformed into something otherworldly and breathtaking.
When my mother was alight with magic, you couldn’t tear your eyes away from him.

My father noticed the strange smell the moment he returned home, his alarm evident. He found us huddled together in bed. At the sight of him, my mother burst into apologetic tears. From that night on, I never felt entirely safe in the dining room again.
Any remaining sense of security vanished when I was seven, after my mother and father traveled to Africa and never returned.
