Forever?

Forever? Maybe

People speak about forever as though it's a destination. As if one day we'll arrive there, unpack our hearts, and nothing will ever change again.

I don't think that's what forever is.

I think forever is simply a word invented by people who wanted beautiful moments to stay a little longer.

When we were children, forever was an entire summer afternoon. The sun refused to set, the ice cream never melted fast enough, and tomorrow always seemed far away. We believed every friend would remain a friend forever because we hadn't yet met goodbye.

Then we grew older.

We learned that forever has a strange habit of ending without asking permission.

A favorite café closes.

A familiar voice becomes unfamiliar.

People who once knew every version of you slowly become strangers carrying your memories instead.

It's unsettling, really. How something can feel permanent one day and become a memory the next.

Maybe that's why people fear change so much.

Not because they're afraid of what's coming.

But because they know what it feels like to lose something they once believed would never leave.

Still...

I don't think forever lied to us.

I think we misunderstood it.

Maybe forever was never supposed to describe time.

Maybe it was supposed to describe impact.

There are conversations that lasted only a few minutes yet remained with me for years.

There are people who stayed for a season but rearranged the furniture inside my heart as though they'd lived there forever.

There are songs that end after three minutes but somehow continue playing in places no speaker could ever reach.

Tell me...

If something changes you permanently, did it really disappear?

I don't think so.

A flower doesn't fail because it blooms for a week.

A sunset isn't less beautiful because it refuses to stay.

The value of something has never been measured by how long it lasted.

Only by how deeply it was felt.

Perhaps we've spent too much of our lives asking, "Will this last forever?"

When maybe we should have been asking...

"Will I remember how this made me feel?"

Because memory has always been kinder than time.

Time moves forward without hesitation.

Memory pauses.

It revisits.

It smiles at things that no longer exist.

Sometimes, on completely ordinary days, you'll hear a laugh that sounds familiar.

You'll smell rain that reminds you of someone whose name you haven't spoken in years.

You'll pass a street, a bench, a bookstore, and suddenly a version of yourself you thought had disappeared quietly returns for a moment.

That's forever.

Not because the moment survived.

But because a part of you carried it all this way.

Maybe that's all we ever do as people.

We carry tiny pieces of one another.

A phrase someone always used.

A habit we unknowingly borrowed.

A song they showed us.

A way of seeing sunsets.

A way of making tea.

A way of saying goodbye.

None of these things announce themselves.

They simply become us.

And perhaps that's the gentlest kind of forever there is.

The kind that doesn't ask to be noticed.

The kind that quietly continues living inside another person.

So if you're lucky enough to have something beautiful today...

Don't spend all your time wondering whether it'll last forever.

Hold it.

Laugh a little louder.

Stay a little longer.

Tell people they matter while they're still there to hear it.

Because forever has never belonged to clocks.

It belongs to moments that become part of who we are.

And maybe...

That's enough.

Maybe forever was never about things staying.

Maybe it was always about things leaving behind a version of themselves inside us that never quite learns how to say goodbye.
