The rain had been falling since sunset, covering the city in a blanket of mist and silence.
Streetlights reflected off the wet roads, making everything look cold and lonely. Inside a small but cozy house on the edge of the city, Aurora Blake stood near the living room window, absentmindedly tracing raindrops with her finger.
She loved rainy evenings.
They usually brought her peace. She would curl up with a novel, make herself a cup of hot tea, and lose herself in stories where every problem eventually found a happy ending.
But tonight felt different.
An uneasy feeling settled deep in her heart, as if the storm outside was warning her that something was about to change.
Aurora glanced at the old clock hanging on the wall.
It was almost ten o'clock.
Her father, William Blake, was never this late.
She picked up her phone for the fifth time that hour, but there were no new messages.
"Maybe he's working overtime," she whispered to herself, trying to stay calm.
Just then, the front door slowly opened.
Aurora immediately rushed toward it.
"Dad!"
William Blake stepped inside, soaked from the rain. His clothes were wrinkled, and his face looked pale and exhausted. He wasn't the cheerful father Aurora had seen that morning.
Something was terribly wrong.
Without saying a word, he removed his wet coat and sat heavily on the sofa.
"Dad... what happened?" Aurora asked softly.
He didn't answer.
Instead, he stared at the floor as if he couldn't bear to look at his own daughter.
Aurora knelt beside him.
"You've never looked at me like this before. Please tell me."
William took a deep breath, but the words refused to come.
Finally, after what felt like forever, he spoke.
"I made the biggest mistake of my life."
Aurora's heart skipped a beat.
"What do you mean?"
"I borrowed money."
She frowned.
"From the bank?"
He slowly shook his head.
"No."
"Then... from whom?"
His hands trembled as he whispered the name.
"Lucien Voss."
Aurora felt the blood drain from her face.
Everyone in the city knew that name.
Lucien Voss wasn't just a wealthy businessman.
He was the man people spoke about in hushed voices.
The leader of the powerful Voss Syndicate.
Some called him the king of the underworld.
Others called him the devil in a tailored suit.
Stories about him filled the newspapers, but no one knew which ones were true. Some claimed he was ruthless.
Others believed he protected innocent people while destroying those who betrayed him.
No matter what the truth was, one thing was certain.
No one dared to cross Lucien Voss.
Aurora slowly sat beside her father.
"How much do you owe?"
William closed his eyes.
"Enough to lose everything."
Tears filled Aurora's eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I wanted to fix it before you found out."
"What happened?"
William's voice broke.
"I invested everything in a business with someone I trusted."
"He disappeared."
"I lost every rupee."
"I kept borrowing money, hoping I could recover."
"But I only made everything worse."
Aurora reached for his hand.
"We'll figure something out."
William looked at her sadly.
"I don't think we can."
Before Aurora could answer, three loud knocks echoed through the house.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Both of them froze.
William's face turned completely white.
"They're here."
Aurora slowly walked toward the door.
As she opened it, three men dressed in black suits stood outside.Their expressions were calm, almost emotionless.
The tallest man stepped forward.
"Miss Aurora Blake?"
"Yes."
"I have a message from Mr. Lucien Voss."
He handed her a black envelope with a silver seal.
Without another word, the three men stood silently, waiting.
Aurora's fingers trembled as she opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of thick white paper.
There were only a few lines written on it.
Your father's debt will be erased.
In return, you will marry Lucien Voss.
You have three days to decide.
Aurora read the words again.
Then again.
Her heart pounded so loudly she could barely hear the rain outside.
"This... this has to be some kind of joke."
The man finally spoke.
"Mr. Voss does not joke."
Aurora looked toward her father.
He couldn't even lift his head.
She felt anger, fear, confusion, and heartbreak all at once.
"Why would someone like Lucien Voss want to marry me?"
The man remained expressionless.
"Our boss believes the answer will become clear in time."
He turned toward the door.
"Three days, Miss Blake."
The men disappeared into the rain as quietly as they had arrived.
Aurora closed the door with shaking hands.
The house felt colder than before.
She looked down at the proposal once more.
It wasn't a request.
It wasn't even a negotiation.
It was a choice between her family's survival... and the life she had always dreamed of.
Aurora slowly folded the letter and held it tightly against her chest.
Outside, thunder roared across the sky.
For the first time in her life, she realized that some storms didn't pass.
Some storms changed everything.
Aurora barely slept that night.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the letter lying on the table.
Marry Lucien Voss.
The words echoed in her mind like a haunting melody.
By morning, the rain had stopped, but the dark clouds still covered the sky. The house felt unusually quiet.
Grace Blake placed a cup of tea in front of Aurora.
"My dear," she said gently, "you don't have to make this decision alone."
Aurora looked at her mother with tear-filled eyes.
"I don't even know who he really is."
Grace sighed.
"Neither does anyone else."
Before anyone could say another word, a sleek black luxury car stopped outside the house.
Aurora walked to the window.
The same three men from the previous night stood beside the car.
One of them rang the doorbell.
William opened the door with shaking hands.
"Our boss wishes to meet Miss Aurora Blake," the man said politely.
Aurora looked at her parents.
Her father lowered his head.
"You don't have to go," Grace whispered.
Aurora took a deep breath.
"If I don't face him, I'll never know what he wants."
She picked up her handbag and stepped
outside.
The car door opened.
Without saying a word, she got inside.
The journey lasted nearly forty minutes.
As the city disappeared behind them, enormous iron gates came into view.
The gates slowly opened.
Beyond them stood a breathtaking mansion surrounded by beautiful gardens, fountains, and ancient trees.
It looked less like a home and more like a palace.
Aurora stepped out of the car, trying to hide her nervousness.
A butler greeted her with a respectful bow.
"This way, Miss Blake."
She followed him through long marble hallways decorated with priceless paintings and crystal chandeliers.
Everything was elegant.
Everything was silent.
Finally, they stopped outside a pair of tall wooden doors.
The butler gently knocked.
"Sir, Miss Blake has arrived."
A deep voice answered from inside.
"Send her in."
Aurora's heartbeat quickened.
She slowly pushed open the doors.
The room was enormous.
Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the gardens.
Bookshelves covered one wall, while another displayed framed photographs and antique weapons.
Standing near the window was a tall man dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit.
His hands rested behind his back as he
admired the city in the distance.
Without turning around, he spoke.
"Miss Blake."
His calm voice filled the room.
"Please come in."
Aurora stepped forward cautiously.
The man finally turned.
For a brief moment, time seemed to stop.
Lucien Voss was nothing like the terrifying image she had imagined.
He looked calm.
Composed.
His sharp grey eyes carried quiet authority rather than anger.
His expression remained unreadable.
"Please," he said, pointing toward a chair.
"Sit."
Aurora remained standing.
"I'd rather know why I'm here."
For the first time, the corner of Lucien's lips lifted ever so slightly.
"You are braver than most people who enter this room."
"I didn't come here to impress you."
"I know."
Silence settled between them.
Finally, Aurora gathered the courage to ask the question that had been haunting her.
"Why me?"
Lucien walked toward his desk and picked up the black envelope she had received the previous night.
"I expected that question."
He placed the envelope back down.
"Your father owes me a great deal of money."
"I know."
"But I don't want his money."
Aurora frowned.
"Then why ask me to marry you?"
Lucien looked directly into her eyes.
"Because this marriage is important."
"Important for what?"
"For both of us."
Aurora's confusion only deepened.
"I don't understand."
"You don't have to understand today."
"I deserve the truth."
"And you will have it."
He paused for a moment.
"But not yet."
Aurora clenched her fists.
"I won't marry a stranger who refuses to tell me why."
Lucien nodded calmly.
"I expected that answer."
He walked toward the window again.
"You have two days left to decide."
As Aurora turned to leave, Lucien spoke one final sentence.
"If you refuse..."
He paused.
"I will accept your decision."
Aurora stopped walking.
She slowly looked back.
That wasn't the answer she had expected.
For the first time since receiving the proposal, she wondered if the stories about Lucien Voss had been wrong all along.
Or perhaps...
The most dangerous secrets were hidden behind the calmest faces.
The black sedan rolled silently through the city streets.
Aurora leaned against the window, watching the lights disappear one by one as the Voss mansion faded into the distance.
Her mind refused to rest.
She had spent less than an hour with Lucien Voss.
Yet that single meeting had shattered everything she believed about him.
He wasn't loud.
He wasn't cruel.
He didn't need to threaten anyone.
His silence alone carried enough power to make people obey.
Aurora closed her eyes, replaying every word he had spoken.
"If you return... it will be as my fiancée."
The words settled heavily in her heart.
She didn't even realize the car had stopped until the driver opened the door.
"We're here, Miss Blake."
Aurora thanked him quietly and walked toward her house.
The front door opened before she could reach it.
Grace Blake hurried outside and wrapped her daughter in a tight embrace.
"You scared me," Grace whispered. "I've been waiting by the window."
"I'm alright, Mom."
William Blake stood in the doorway, unable to look Aurora in the eyes.
"What happened?" he asked in a low voice.
Aurora stepped inside and placed her handbag on the table.
"He gave me two days."
William's shoulders slumped.
"I never wanted this."
"I know, Dad."
"No..." he said, his voice breaking. "You don't understand."
He slowly sank onto the sofa.
"I failed this family."
Grace sat beside him and held his hand.
"We'll find another way."
William gave a bitter smile.
"I've searched for one every single day."
"There isn't one."
The room fell silent.
Aurora looked at the people she loved most.
Her father, once full of confidence, now looked defeated.
Her mother tried to stay strong, even though fear filled her eyes.
Everything they had built was slipping away.
That night, Aurora couldn't sleep.
She walked onto the balcony and looked up at the sky.
The stars shone brightly above her, untouched by the worries below.
"Why me?" she whispered into the night.
Far across the city, the lights inside the Voss mansion were still on.
Lucien stood alone in his study.
A knock came at the door.
"Come in."
Dante Russo entered.
"Boss."
Lucien didn't turn around.
"She left safely?"
"Yes."
"And?"
Dante hesitated.
"She looked frightened."
Lucien remained silent.
After a long pause, he spoke.
"Anyone in her position would be."
Dante looked at him curiously.
"You could have forced her answer today."
Lucien's expression didn't change.
"A forced answer has no value."
Before Dante could respond, another man hurried into the study.
"Boss."
Lucien turned.
"What is it?"
"The DeLuca Syndicate has started making moves."
The room instantly grew tense.
"They've been asking questions about Miss Aurora Blake."
Lucien's calm expression hardened for the first time.
"They know about her?"
"It seems so."
A dangerous silence filled the room.
Lucien's grey eyes turned cold.
"Double the security around the Blake family."
"And make sure they never realize they're being protected."
"Yes, Boss."
As the men left, Lucien looked out through the rain-covered window.
For years, he had kept his dangerous world separate from innocent lives.
Now...
Aurora Blake had unknowingly become part of it.
And once the DeLuca Syndicate set its sights on someone...
There was no turning back....
