The Rooftop Diary

Characters

.

✨ Riya

Age: 20

A girl who believes in sunsets, little moments, and the kind of love she has only read about in stories.

Riya is a hopeless romantic hidden behind a calm face. She is introverted, kind, confident, and a little clumsy. Though she appears strong and unaffected, her heart is much more sensitive than anyone realizes.

She loves nature, peaceful places, and the beauty of simple things. She never lets others see her tears because she believes emotions make her look weak.

But beneath all her walls is a girl waiting to be understood.-

🌙 Krish

Age: 22

The quiet soul who believes actions speak louder than words.

Krish is an HR Executive — hardworking, responsible, calm, and dependable. Having spent his entire life focusing on responsibilities, he has never been in a relationship.

He is an introvert who struggles to express his feelings, but when he cares about someone, he shows it through small gestures, silent support, and endless patience.

He never expected to fall in love during a simple interview… until he met Riya.

☀️ Koushal

Age: 22

The person who loved her first, but never became the reason for her sadness.

Koushal is warm, expressive, caring, and honest with his feelings. He met Riya in her first workplace and slowly fell for her.

Even when his love remained unspoken, he continued to care for her sincerely. He is not a villain in their story — he is someone who loved deeply and learned that sometimes love also means letting someone be happy.

The one person who knows the real Riya behind her strong personality.

Swara is cheerful, supportive, and always there for Riya. She is the person Riya trusts with her fears, dreams, and secrets.

A story of sunsets, secrets, friendship, and a love that was written before they even met.

Chapter 1:A Shade of Lipstick

"Some people fall in love with people. Riya fell in love with sunsets first."

If someone asked Riya to describe herself, she'd probably laugh and say,

"I'm just... me."

Not the prettiest girl in the room.

Not the smartest.

Not the funniest.

Just someone who loved watching the sky change colors every evening.

She believed sunsets were proof that endings didn't always have to be painful. Sometimes they were beautiful enough to make you wait for tomorrow.

She was the kind of person who laughed at her own mistakes before anyone else could.

The kind who tripped over perfectly flat roads.

The kind who could confidently answer a presentation in front of thirty people but would panic if a stranger simply asked, "How are you?"

People often misunderstood her.

She looked calm.

Strong.

Unbothered.

But the truth was painfully different.

A single harsh word could make her eyes sting with tears. She hated crying in front of people, so she became an expert at smiling until she reached home.

She wasn't heartless.

She simply protected her heart too well.

Love?

It was beautiful in movies.

Beautiful in novels.

Beautiful when it happened to someone else.

For herself...

She wasn't sure it even existed.

Maybe that was why fate laughed whenever she made plans.

At eighteen, fresh out of a women's college, Riya had absolutely no intention of working.

Until one midnight, her phone exploded with messages.

Swara: Guys! A company is hiring freshers! Let's all apply together!

Within minutes, five excited replies appeared.

One after another.

"I'm in!"

"Me too!"

"Let's go as a gang!"

Riya stared at the screen before smiling.

If everyone was going...

Why not her?

A week later, six nervous girls stood in front of a huge glass building, adjusting their ID cards and pretending they weren't scared.

"I can't believe we're adults now," one of them groaned.

"We're not adults," Riya replied. "We're children with ID cards."

Everyone burst into laughter.

That was Riya.

Even when she was nervous, she somehow made the people around her smile.

The office was nothing like her college.

Men and women worked together.

Phones rang endlessly.

People walked confidently through long corridors with coffee cups in their hands.

Riya quietly moved behind Swara.

"I've never even spoken to a boy before," she whispered.

Swara laughed.

"They're humans, Riya. Not lions."

"We'll see about that."

The first few weeks passed in laughter, training sessions, silly mistakes, and endless teasing between the six friends.

For the first time in her life, the outside world didn't seem so frightening.

Until one person started noticing the smallest things about her.

His name was Koushal.

He wasn't loud.

He wasn't trying to impress anyone.

He simply... noticed.

One afternoon, while everyone was having lunch, Koushal casually asked Swara,

"Did Riya change her lipstick today?"

Swara frowned.

"What lipstick?"

"The nude shade... she wasn't wearing it yesterday."

Swara looked genuinely confused.

That evening she rushed to Riya's desk.

"Did you wear lipstick today?"

Riya blinked.

"...Yeah. Just a little."

Swara stared at her.

"Do you know who noticed?"

"Who?"

"Koushal."

Riya laughed.

"No way."

"I'm serious! Even I didn't notice."

For the first time, Riya looked across the office toward Koushal.

He wasn't looking at her.

He was quietly working, completely unaware that he'd become the topic of their conversation.

A strange thought crossed her mind.

Even my best friend didn't notice... but he did.

She shook the thought away.

Surely...

It didn't mean anything.

Or at least...

That's what she wanted to believe.

Chapter 2:The Confession That Never Happened

"Sometimes love doesn't begin with grand gestures. It begins with someone remembering the little things everyone else forgets."

The first month at the office passed faster than Riya had expected.

Every morning began with the same routine.

The six girls would rush through the revolving doors at the last minute, laughing as if they owned the building. Someone would forget their ID card, someone would spill coffee, and someone would blame the elevator for being "too slow."

By lunchtime, they had already become the noisiest group on the floor.

"You people laugh too much," one of the senior employees joked.

Swara grinned. "It's free motivation."

Even the seniors couldn't help smiling.

For Riya, the office slowly stopped feeling unfamiliar.

She still wasn't someone who talked a lot.

She preferred listening.

Watching.

Smiling quietly at conversations instead of becoming the center of them.

It made people think she was reserved.

Only her friends knew she simply needed more time before letting people into her world.

---

One afternoon, the six girls were walking toward the cafeteria when Riya suddenly stopped.

"I forgot my phone."

"You go," Swara said. "We'll order for you."

Riya hurried back upstairs.

As she reached her desk, she heard footsteps behind her.

"You forgot this."

She turned around.

Koushal was holding her employee ID card.

"You left it near the printer."

"Oh..."

She accepted it with both hands.

"Thank you."

"No problem."

There was an awkward silence.

"So..."

"So..."

They both spoke at the same time.

Both laughed.

"I'll go first," Koushal smiled.

"After you."

"You really like sunsets, don't you?"

Riya blinked.

"How do you know?"

"I saw the wallpaper on your laptop."

She looked down, embarrassed.

It was a photograph she'd taken herself—an orange sky fading into soft pink clouds.

"I guess I do."

"They're nice."

That was all.

No flirting.

No unnecessary conversation.

Yet somehow, Riya found herself smiling all the way to the cafeteria.

---

Days turned into weeks.

Without realizing it, Koushal became part of her routine.

If she skipped breakfast, he'd quietly place a biscuit packet on her desk.

If she struggled with a task, he'd explain it patiently.

If everyone rushed toward the elevator, he'd somehow end up standing beside her.

Never too close.

Never making her uncomfortable.

Just... there.

Riya never thought much of it.

She had never had a male friend before.

Maybe boys were simply like this.

Maybe this was what friendship looked like.

---

One Friday afternoon, the team decided to order milkshakes.

"What flavor?" someone asked.

Before Riya could answer, Koushal spoke.

"Chocolate."

Everyone looked at him.

"How do you know?" Swara asked.

He looked surprised himself.

"She ordered it last week."

Riya stared at him.

He remembered?

She barely remembered what she'd eaten yesterday.

---

A few days later, the girls gathered around Riya's desk during lunch.

Swara folded her arms dramatically.

"We need to talk."

Riya raised an eyebrow.

"Why does that sound like an interrogation?"

"It is."

One of the girls leaned closer.

"Don't spend too much time with Koushal."

Riya frowned.

"Why?"

"Because he likes you."

She laughed immediately.

"No, he doesn't."

"He does."

"No."

"He literally waits for you before lunch."

"Coincidence."

"He remembers everything about you."

"He's observant."

"He looks for you whenever you disappear."

"Friendly."

The girls exchanged defeated looks.

Swara sighed.

"Riya..."

"Hm?"

"You really have no idea, do you?"

Riya shook her head.

"I think you're all overthinking."

Deep inside...

She hoped they were.

Because if they weren't...

She wouldn't know what to do.

---

That evening, heavy rain poured across the city.

Employees crowded near the entrance waiting for it to stop.

Riya stood quietly by the glass doors, watching raindrops race down the windows.

"You don't have an umbrella?"

She turned.

Koushal.

She smiled sheepishly.

"I forgot."

"So did I."

They both laughed.

"I guess we're stuck."

Neither of them minded.

For nearly twenty minutes, they stood there talking about everything except themselves.

Favorite movies.

Terrible office coffee.

The funniest mistakes they'd made during training.

When the rain finally softened, they began walking toward the bus stop.

There wasn't much conversation anymore.

Just comfortable silence.

Riya realized...

Silence didn't always have to feel awkward.

Sometimes...

It felt peaceful.

---

That night, Swara called her.

"So?"

"So what?"

"You spent half an hour with Koushal."

"We were waiting for the rain to stop."

Swara groaned.

"You're impossible."

"What did I do?"

"Nothing."

"Exactly."

Swara laughed before hanging up.

Riya placed her phone beside her pillow.

For the first time in years...

She wondered if maybe friendships between boys and girls really could exist.

She closed her eyes with a small smile.

Completely unaware...

That someone else was wondering whether friendship would ever be enough.
