The Great Lock Down

chapter 1

❄️══════ ❄️ 🎄 ❄️ ══════❄️

A few days before Christmas, the massive residential community building looked more like a small holiday town than an apartment complex. Strings of colorful lights stretched from balcony to balcony, wreaths hung from nearly every apartment door, and giant red bows decorated the stair railings. Holiday music drifted through the open courtyard from large speakers while neighbors hurried from booth to booth carrying shopping bags, cups of hot chocolate, and plates stacked high with homemade food. Children laughed as they chased one another around a towering Christmas tree placed in the center of the courtyard, its ornaments sparkling beneath the crisp winter morning sky. Vendors continued setting up handmade crafts, baked goods, knitted scarves, candles, and artwork, hoping to earn a little extra money before Christmas Day. The entire building buzzed with excitement, and for a brief moment, it felt as though nothing bad could ever happen within these walls.

On the first floor, tucked neatly between a family-owned bakery and a tiny flower shop, sat Ryquez's wooden art toy store.

Even before sunrise, warm amber lights glowed through its front windows.

The scent of freshly carved cedar, oak, and pine filled the cozy shop.

Rows upon rows of handcrafted peg dolls, wooden animals, rocking horses, miniature houses, puzzles, ornaments, toy trains, and tiny villages lined the shelves with remarkable precision. Every single piece had been carved by Ryquez himself, each one sanded until perfectly smooth and painted by hand. The little store had become one of the most beloved places in the entire residential community.

Ryquez stood behind the counter, his broad shoulders nearly filling the narrow aisle. Towering over almost everything in the room, the bulky man quietly inspected a newly carved wooden snowman before placing it carefully onto a display shelf. His long dreadlocks rested against the back of his dark hoodie as he adjusted a tiny Christmas village display in the front window.

Without saying much, he naturally moved with calm confidence.

He straightened the price tags.

Swept away a few stray wood shavings.

Adjusted a small wooden reindeer that had tipped sideways.

Finally, he stepped back to admire everything.

"...Almost ready," he quietly murmured to himself.

His eyes drifted toward the clock hanging above the register.

The time made him smile slightly.

"She should still be asleep."

The front lights remained dim while the "Closed" sign still faced outward. Ryquez quietly walked away from the storefront and disappeared through a hallway leading to the private home attached behind and beneath the shop.

Unlike the cheerful storefront, the living quarters were peaceful.

Soft morning light slipped through the curtains.

Everything remained still.

The faint hum of the heater filled the room.

Down the hallway, Kaleyana slept peacefully beneath a thick blanket. Curled slightly onto her side, one arm rested protectively around her enormous full-term belly. Even while sleeping, the size of her pregnancy made it difficult for her to find a comfortable position. A pillow rested beneath her back while another supported her legs.

Ryquez slowed his footsteps until they were nearly silent.

He approached the bedside.

For a few moments...

He simply watched to make sure she was sleeping comfortably.

A small smile crossed his face.

Very gently, he sat beside the bed.

His enormous hand carefully brushed several loose strands of hair away from her face before softly rubbing the top of her head.

"Kaleyana..." he said quietly.

She didn't answer.

Still half asleep, she let out a tiny sleepy hum.

"Mmm..."

Ryquez chuckled under his breath.

He continued gently rubbing her head.

"Morning."

Several long seconds passed before one eye slowly cracked open.

Kaleyana blinked lazily.

"...Morning already?"

"It is."

She sighed dramatically.

"I was having such a good dream..."

Ryquez smiled.

"I know."

She slowly stretched as much as her pregnant body would allow before placing both hands beneath her belly to help herself roll upright. Even sitting up had become a careful process now.

Ryquez instinctively placed a steady hand behind her back.

"There you go."

She nodded sleepily.

"Thank you..."

Another yawn escaped her as she rested both hands across her stomach.

The baby shifted noticeably beneath her hoodie.

Kaleyana smiled down at her belly.

"Looks like somebody's awake too."

Ryquez gently placed his large hand against her stomach.

A firm little kick answered him.

"...Already causing trouble."

Kaleyana laughed softly.

"Just like their daddy."

Ryquez raised an eyebrow.

"I don't remember causing trouble."

"You carved an entire dragon because a six-year-old asked if dragons celebrated Christmas."

"...He seemed serious."

She laughed harder.

"Exactly."

The peaceful laughter lingered throughout the room before Kaleyana slowly nodded, mentally preparing herself for another busy day.

"I should get dressed before the booths start getting crowded."

Ryquez stood first before offering both hands to her.

She accepted them without hesitation.

Using his strength for support, Kaleyana carefully rose to her feet.

Once she found her balance, she smiled appreciatively.

"I'm okay."

"I know," Ryquez replied. "But I'd rather help."

Nearly forty minutes later, the little wooden toy shop was alive with activity.

The lights glowed warmly.

Holiday music played softly through an old speaker.

Fresh wooden ornaments hung from decorative garland wrapped around the shelves.

Kaleyana carefully arranged handcrafted peg dolls near the entrance while greeting early customers with a cheerful smile. Ryquez unlocked the front door, flipped the sign from Closed to Open, and held the door as the first wave of holiday shoppers wandered inside, completely unaware that this joyful Christmas celebration would soon become the beginning of the most terrifying day the residential community had ever experienced.

❄️══════ ❄️ 🎄 ❄️ ══════❄️

The moment the front door had been unlocked, the peaceful little toy shop transformed into one of the busiest stores in the entire residential community.

The cheerful jingle of the bell above the entrance barely had time to stop ringing before another customer walked inside.

And another.

Then another.

Soon there was hardly any room left to stand.

Parents admired the handcrafted peg dolls displayed across the shelves while grandparents slowly wandered through the aisles, pointing out toys that reminded them of their own childhoods. Children gasped at the miniature wooden villages, carefully painted trains, rocking horses, dinosaurs, and tiny animal figurines.

Warm laughter bounced off the wooden walls.

Outside, Christmas music drifted through the open doorway from the courtyard festival.

Inside, the smell of freshly carved cedar mixed with cinnamon from the bakery next door.

The atmosphere felt alive.

Kaleyana stood behind one of the display tables, greeting nearly everyone by name.

"Good morning, Mrs. Alvarez!"

"Oh, sweetheart!" the elderly woman smiled. "You're getting closer and closer!"

Kaleyana instinctively rested both hands beneath her full belly.

"I definitely feel like it."

"You still working?"

"I'd go crazy sitting at home."

Mrs. Alvarez laughed.

"I remember saying that before my youngest."

A little girl tugged on her grandmother's sleeve.

"Can I get the bunny?"

"The white one?"

"Nooo... the sleepy bunny!"

Kaleyana reached over and gently picked up the tiny handcrafted rabbit.

"This little one?"

The girl's face lit up.

"Yes!"

"Well... I think he was waiting for you."

The child hugged the little wooden rabbit to her chest as though it were priceless.

Nearby, another customer approached.

"Kaleyana?"

She turned.

"Yes?"

"I've always wanted to ask..."

"Go ahead."

"How does Ryquez carve things so tiny with hands that big?"

Kaleyana laughed.

"I ask myself that every day."

Another customer leaned into the conversation.

"Does he make everything himself?"

"He does."

"Every single piece?"

She proudly nodded.

"Every cut, every carving, every layer of paint."

A younger man looked around in amazement.

"How long does one doll take?"

"It depends on the design."

"What kind of wood is this?"

"Can they be customized?"

"Do you teach classes?"

"Do you ship?"

"Can these survive toddlers?"

"How long have you two lived here?"

Question after question continued flying toward her.

Kaleyana answered every single one patiently despite rubbing her aching lower back every few minutes.

Meanwhile...

Ryquez had become the unofficial entertainment center.

"Mr. Ryquez!"

A tiny voice echoed through the shop.

He turned just in time to see three neighborhood children charging toward him.

"Oh..."

Before he could react—

One little boy wrapped himself around Ryquez's leg.

A second climbed onto his side.

A third somehow managed to latch onto his back.

"Dreadlocks!" one laughed.

"You're like a tree!"

"No..."

"A mountain!"

Ryquez simply stood there.

"...Morning."

The children's parents looked absolutely horrified.

"Oh my goodness!"

"Get down!"

"I'm so sorry!"

Instead of appearing annoyed, Ryquez simply steadied the little ones so none of them slipped.

"They're alright."

The smallest child giggled.

"Can you pick us all up?"

Ryquez looked at the three tiny climbers.

"...Already are."

The parents burst into embarrassed laughter.

"I swear they think you're a playground."

Kaleyana peeked around a shelf, immediately laughing.

"I told you."

Ryquez sighed dramatically.

"They've evolved."

"They're treating you like a jungle gym."

"I noticed."

Soon even more children wandered over.

One wanted to touch his dreadlocks.

Another wanted to see him carve.

Another climbed onto one of his enormous boots just to compare shoe sizes.

Ryquez patiently answered every question.

"No... my hands aren't magic."

"No... I don't eat wood."

"Yes... splinters hurt."

Kaleyana couldn't stop smiling every time she looked over.

For all his intimidating size...

Children trusted him immediately.

Hours passed in what felt like minutes.

The register rarely stopped ringing.

Shelves slowly emptied.

Boxes stacked behind the counter became smaller and smaller.

Outside, the courtyard only grew busier as more holiday visitors arrived.

Then...

Buzz.

Kaleyana paused.

Her phone vibrated inside her apron pocket.

She frowned.

"That's strange..."

She pulled it out.

Across the screen flashed an emergency notification.

EMERGENCY ALERT

Residents and businesses inside the community complex should remain alert. Security personnel are responding to an active incident near the property. Await further instructions.

Her smile disappeared.

"...Ryquez."

Almost at the exact same moment—

Buzz.

Ryquez's phone vibrated.

He glanced at it.

His expression changed immediately.

Without saying a word, he walked over beside Kaleyana.

The two silently exchanged phones.

Neither liked what they were reading.

A second notification appeared almost instantly.

Community Security Notice: Please prepare for temporary access restrictions. Avoid gathering near exits until further notice.

Kaleyana instinctively rested a protective hand over her belly.

"...That doesn't sound good."

Ryquez slowly looked toward the shop windows.

Outside...

Something had changed.

Security officers who had been casually walking around earlier were now moving much faster.

Several were speaking urgently into radios.

People had begun looking around in confusion.

Some shoppers were pointing toward one of the building entrances.

The joyful atmosphere was beginning to crack.

Ryquez's voice remained calm.

"We're closing."

"So soon?"

"Now."

Kaleyana didn't argue.

Something in his expression told her this wasn't an overreaction.

She quietly walked toward the entrance.

"I'm so sorry, everyone," she announced politely. "We're going to have to close a little earlier than planned today."

Several customers blinked in surprise.

"So early?"

"Is everything alright?"

"I don't know yet," Kaleyana admitted honestly. "But we'd rather be cautious."

Ryquez gently began locking the display cases while helping customers finish their purchases. The last few neighbors thanked them and slowly filtered out of the shop, though many glanced nervously toward the increasingly uneasy courtyard.

When the final customer stepped outside, Ryquez turned the sign from OPEN to CLOSED.

The lock clicked into place.

For the first time that day...

The little wooden toy shop fell completely silent.

Neither of them realized that within minutes, those unsettling emergency alerts would become something far worse than either of them could have imagined.

❄️══════ 🎁 ✦ 🎄 ✦ 🎁 ══════❄️

The uneasy silence inside the toy shop lasted only a few minutes.

Then—

A loud alarm blared throughout the entire residential community.

It wasn't the cheerful music from the holiday festival.

It wasn't a fire alarm.

It was a deep, mechanical emergency siren that echoed through every hallway, every stairwell, and every floor of the enormous building.

For a heartbeat, nobody understood what was happening.

Then came the shouting.

Outside the front windows, people who had been casually walking through the courtyard suddenly broke into a run.

Shopping bags fell onto the pavement.

A booth owner abandoned a table full of handmade candles.

Children cried as parents scooped them into their arms.

"What happened?"

"Run!"

"Get inside!"

"Lock the doors!"

The joyful sounds of Christmas disappeared beneath a wave of frightened voices.

Kaleyana instinctively stepped closer to the front window.

"...Ryquez..."

He was already watching.

Several security officers sprinted across the courtyard, urgently waving people away from one of the main entrances.

More emergency notifications buzzed across their phones.

EMERGENCY LOCKDOWN

Shelter immediately. Remain inside. Lock all doors. Do not leave your location until instructed by authorities.

Almost immediately after the alert—

A deafening metallic crash echoed somewhere outside.

Another scream followed.

Then several more.

The entire building seemed to erupt into chaos.

Without wasting another second, Ryquez grabbed Kaleyana's hand.

"Come."

His voice remained calm, but it carried an urgency she had never heard before.

Kaleyana didn't hesitate.

She hurried after him as quickly as her full-term pregnancy allowed.

Together they rushed through the narrow hallway leading toward the back of the shop.

Ryquez locked the rear entrance.

Then the side entrance.

Then the workshop door.

Each deadbolt clicked into place.

He lowered the metal security shutter over the storefront windows.

The heavy steel rattled as it descended.

The shop became noticeably darker.

Ryquez reached for the switches.

One by one...

Every light went out.

The warm, welcoming toy store disappeared into shadows.

Only thin strips of daylight slipped beneath the shutter.

Kaleyana's breathing grew quicker.

"I... I can't see..."

"I'm here."

His voice came from only a few inches away.

He guided her farther back through the workshop and into the attached living quarters hidden behind the storage room.

The space was small.

Quiet.

Hidden.

Ryquez gently eased her down onto the floor beside the solid basement door.

Then he sat beside her, placing himself between her and the entrance.

His broad back rested firmly against the heavy wooden door.

One arm wrapped securely around Kaleyana's shoulders.

The other rested protectively across her belly.

She could feel his heartbeat.

Steady.

Strong.

Grounding.

Outside...

The building no longer sounded like home.

Footsteps thundered through the hallways overhead.

Someone pounded on a nearby door.

Another person shouted for help.

Voices overlapped until they became impossible to understand.

Kaleyana instinctively gasped.

Ryquez immediately turned toward her.

Very gently...

He placed his hand over her mouth.

Not roughly.

Not to frighten her.

Simply to remind her—

They had to stay absolutely quiet.

His eyes met hers.

She understood immediately.

She gave the smallest nod she could manage.

He slowly loosened his hand just enough for her to breathe comfortably while still muffling any sound she might make if panic overtook her.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

Ryquez quietly wiped it away with his thumb.

"It's okay," he whispered so softly she almost couldn't hear him.

His words weren't a promise that everything would be fine.

They were simply an assurance that he wasn't leaving her.

Another wave of shouting echoed somewhere above them.

Heavy footsteps raced past the shop.

Something large crashed against metal.

Glass shattered in the distance.

The sounds bounced through the walls of the building, making it impossible to tell where anything was happening.

Kaleyana instinctively pressed closer against Ryquez.

Her hands trembled as she held onto the front of his hoodie.

She tried to keep her breathing slow.

She tried not to cry.

She tried not to think about the baby.

A small movement beneath her belly made her freeze.

The baby shifted.

She lowered one shaking hand to her stomach.

Ryquez noticed.

Without saying a word, he placed his large hand over hers.

The silent gesture steadied her.

For several long moments...

Neither of them spoke.

The only sounds filling the darkness were frightened screams echoing through the residential building, hurried footsteps racing somewhere outside the hidden room, distant voices yelling over one another, and the relentless emergency alarm that continued to pulse through the walls.

Time seemed to lose all meaning.

Minutes felt like hours.

Every creak of the building made Kaleyana flinch.

Every muffled thud caused Ryquez to tighten his grip around her just a little more.

Hidden beneath their little toy shop, surrounded by handcrafted wooden dolls that had once brought smiles to children, the two of them remained perfectly still, hoping with everything they had that the darkness would keep them unseen as the nightmare unfolded just beyond the door.

chapter 2

✦══════════ 🕯️ 🕯️ ══════════✦

The lockdown had swallowed the entire residential community.

What had once been a lively holiday celebration had become a prison.

The gang moved through the building with frightening coordination, spreading across different floors while shouting orders at terrified residents. Boots pounded against concrete hallways as apartment doors were kicked open one after another.

"Everybody stay where you are!"

"Don't move!"

"Get against the wall!"

Panicked cries echoed from every direction.

Families huddled together in apartment hallways, hands raised as they tried to shield one another. Elderly residents clung to their walkers while young parents desperately held frightened children close. Some people sobbed openly, while others stood frozen in complete disbelief.

A little boy buried his face in his mother's coat.

"...Mommy, I wanna go home..."

"We are home," she whispered through trembling lips, pulling him closer.

Another child began crying loudly.

The sound spread like a chain reaction.

One frightened toddler cried.

Then another.

Then another.

Within moments, the hallway was filled with frightened little voices calling for their parents.

One father gently bounced his baby against his shoulder, trying everything he could to calm the infant without drawing attention.

"It's okay... Daddy's here... Daddy's got you..."

The baby continued to wail.

Across the hall, a teenage girl quietly wrapped both arms around her younger sisters, shielding their faces against her chest.

"Don't look," she whispered. "Just keep your eyes closed."

The building that had always felt like one enormous family now felt painfully helpless.

Meanwhile...

Silence settled over the hidden toy shop.

Several long minutes passed.

No footsteps.

No pounding on the shutters.

No voices immediately outside.

Ryquez slowly lifted his head, listening carefully.

His breathing remained slow and controlled.

He waited another minute.

Still nothing.

Only then did he carefully stand.

"Stay here," he whispered.

Kaleyana nodded.

She remained seated exactly where she was, one hand resting protectively across her full-term belly.

Ryquez moved cautiously through the darkness.

Every step was deliberate.

He approached the entrance leading into their attached living quarters and carefully peered through the narrow crack beside the frame.

Nothing.

He quietly tested the lock.

Still secure.

He checked the second deadbolt.

Locked.

Then the heavy security bar.

Still firmly in place.

Satisfied, he slowly lowered a thick blackout blanket over the small window in the door. Even the tiniest sliver of light disappeared.

He crossed the room, pulling curtains tightly shut over every window.

Next, he grabbed several folded blankets from a nearby closet.

One by one, he draped them over anything that might reflect light—the television, a decorative mirror, even the small glass cabinet displaying finished wooden ornaments.

The entire living area disappeared into shadow.

Only a faint glow from a battery-powered lantern remained.

It was just enough to see each other.

No more.

Ryquez finally turned back toward Kaleyana.

"You can come now."

She slowly rose from the floor.

Even standing had become difficult.

Her lower back ached from sitting so long, and she instinctively held the underside of her belly for support.

Ryquez immediately offered his arm.

She accepted without a word.

Together, they quietly walked into the modest living room attached beneath the toy shop.

The room had always been comforting.

A well-worn couch.

Bookshelves filled with woodworking manuals.

Family photographs.

Half-finished wooden carvings waiting on a small worktable.

Now it felt completely different.

Every shadow seemed larger.

Every sound from above seemed louder.

Ryquez gently guided Kaleyana toward the couch.

"Easy."

She lowered herself carefully, letting out a quiet sigh as she leaned back against the cushions.

"...Thank you."

He knelt in front of her.

"You hurting?"

"My back mostly."

He disappeared for a moment before returning with a folded blanket.

Carefully, he tucked it behind her lower back.

"Better?"

She shifted slightly.

"...Much."

A tiny movement rolled across her stomach.

Their baby shifted again.

Kaleyana smiled weakly despite everything.

"I think somebody knows something's wrong."

Ryquez rested one large hand against her belly.

"I know."

For just a moment...

Neither of them spoke.

The baby kicked gently beneath his hand.

It was a small reminder that, despite the chaos outside, there was still life, hope, and someone depending on them to stay safe.

Then—

Buzz.

Ryquez looked toward the coffee table.

His phone screen lit up.

He frowned.

There was still a weak signal.

He picked it up.

The screen was crowded with missed notifications.

Unread text messages.

Missed calls.

His friends—the ones who had planned to visit the holiday market that afternoon but had never made it inside the complex—had been trying to reach him.

Darius: Bro, are you okay?

Mason: Answer your phone! The whole place is surrounded by police!

Trey: Please tell me you and Kaleyana got out.

Andre: News helicopters are everywhere. Nobody knows what's happening inside.

Another message arrived.

Darius: Ryquez, if you see this, just send one word. Anything.

Ryquez stared silently at the screen.

His thumb hovered over the keyboard.

He wanted to answer.

To tell them they were alive.

To let someone know where they were hiding.

But he hesitated.

Every vibration.

Every notification sound.

Every light from the screen suddenly felt dangerous.

He quietly switched the phone to silent mode and dimmed the brightness until it was barely visible.

Kaleyana looked at him.

"...Your friends?"

He nodded.

"They're outside."

"Do they know you're safe?"

"...Not yet."

She looked down, her expression heavy with worry.

"I hope everyone out there is okay..."

Before Ryquez could respond, a distant scream echoed faintly through the floor above them.

The sound was quickly followed by angry shouting somewhere deeper inside the building.

Both of them froze.

The room fell silent once again.

Ryquez slowly set his phone face down on the table and moved to sit beside Kaleyana, instinctively wrapping an arm around her shoulders as they listened, knowing the nightmare above them was far from over.

✦══════════ 🌙 ✦ ══════════✦

Night settled over the residential community like a heavy blanket.

The cheerful Christmas lights that had decorated balconies only hours earlier now glowed through shattered silence, casting long shadows across the empty courtyard below. The holiday music had long since stopped. In its place came distant sirens outside the complex, muffled shouting somewhere above, and the occasional crack of something breaking somewhere inside the enormous building.

Inside the hidden living quarters beneath the toy shop, Ryquez kept every light off except for a small battery lantern resting on the floor.

Its dim glow barely reached the corners of the room.

Neither of them had spoken very much.

Words suddenly felt unnecessary.

Ryquez quietly unfolded a thick futon from the hallway closet and laid it carefully across the living room floor. He added several folded blankets beneath it to soften the hard surface before placing pillows at one end.

He looked over toward Kaleyana.

"You shouldn't stay on the couch all night."

She gave a tired nod.

"I know..."

Even standing had become more difficult as the day wore on.

Ryquez stepped beside her and held out both hands.

"Take your time."

Kaleyana accepted them.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

She eased herself onto her feet, one hand supporting the underside of her full-term belly while Ryquez steadied her from the other side.

They crossed the short distance together.

Every few steps he glanced at her face, making sure she wasn't overexerting herself.

When they reached the futon, he helped her lower herself onto her side.

"There."

She exhaled slowly.

"That already feels better."

Ryquez pulled another blanket over her before lying down beside her.

The room was quiet.

No television.

No phones.

No conversations.

Only the steady hum of the heater and the distant sounds filtering through the ceiling from the nightmare unfolding elsewhere in the building.

Kaleyana instinctively curled toward him.

Ryquez wrapped one strong arm around her shoulders while the other rested protectively across the front of her belly.

For several minutes...

Neither of them moved.

They simply listened.

Somewhere upstairs...

A child cried.

The heartbreaking sound echoed faintly through the pipes before fading away.

A door slammed.

Someone yelled.

Then everything became eerily still again.

Kaleyana closed her eyes.

"I've never heard the building this quiet..."

Ryquez rested his chin lightly against the top of her head.

"...Neither have I."

Another long silence passed.

Then...

Kaleyana's breathing changed.

It became slower.

More deliberate.

Her fingers tightened around the blanket.

Ryquez noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

She didn't answer right away.

Instead, she quietly closed her eyes.

A gentle tightening spread across her abdomen.

A contraction.

Not strong.

Not overwhelming.

But unmistakable.

She refused to make a sound.

Instead, she concentrated on breathing evenly through it.

Ryquez felt the muscles beneath his hand tighten.

His expression immediately softened.

"...Contraction?"

She gave the smallest nod.

"A little one..."

"Worse than before?"

"...No."

She paused to breathe.

"I just... don't want it to get louder."

The thought terrified both of them.

If labor truly began now...

If she cried out...

If the baby came tonight...

The danger would become unimaginable.

Ryquez shifted closer.

Without speaking, he slowly slid his broad hand lower across the curve of her belly.

Using gentle, steady pressure, he began rubbing slow circles across her lower abdomen, careful and reassuring.

His touch wasn't hurried.

It was calm.

Patient.

Grounding.

"Breathe with me," he whispered.

Kaleyana matched his rhythm.

A slow inhale.

A careful exhale.

Again.

Again.

The tightening gradually eased.

She released a shaky breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding.

"It passed..."

Ryquez continued rubbing her belly for another few moments anyway.

"Good."

A faint kick answered his hand from inside.

He looked down.

"Our little one's still moving."

Kaleyana smiled weakly despite everything.

"They're probably wondering why we're still awake."

Ryquez managed the smallest smile.

"...Probably."

Outside...

A helicopter could be heard passing overhead.

Its searchlight briefly swept across the neighborhood outside the complex, though none of its light reached the hidden basement.

Sirens continued in the distance.

Somewhere far above, hurried footsteps echoed through a hallway before disappearing again.

Kaleyana instinctively moved closer, resting her forehead against Ryquez's chest.

He tightened his embrace just enough for her to feel secure without disturbing her aching body.

His hand never left her belly.

Every so often he gently rubbed it again, silently reminding both her and the baby that they were together.

Neither of them knew what tomorrow would bring.

Neither of them knew if rescue would come with the morning.

But hidden beneath the quiet toy shop, surrounded by shelves filled with handcrafted wooden creations made to bring joy, Ryquez held Kaleyana through the long, terrifying night, determined to keep her—and their unborn child—as safe as he possibly could.

✦══════════ 🌙 ✦ ══════════✦

✦══════════ 🌅 ✦ ══════════✦

Morning arrived without bringing peace.

The darkness outside the hidden living quarters slowly gave way to a dull gray light that filtered around the edges of the blackout blankets covering the windows. Ryquez had barely slept. Every sound during the night had kept him alert, listening for footsteps outside the shop or someone trying the doors.

Kaleyana stirred beside him, her body sore from sleeping on the futon.

"...Morning..." she whispered hoarsely.

Ryquez was already awake.

He gently rubbed her shoulder.

"How are you feeling?"

"Tired."

She rested a hand across her full-term belly.

"And sore."

"The contractions?"

"They stopped."

He nodded, visibly relieved.

"Good."

Neither of them moved immediately.

The building above them remained eerily quiet.

No shouting.

No running.

No pounding.

Just...

Silence.

An uneasy silence.

Then—

A booming voice echoed somewhere outside the building.

"This is law enforcement!"

The amplified announcement reverberated through the walls.

"If you are inside the residential complex, stay where you are! Officers are entering the building!"

Kaleyana's eyes widened.

"...Ryquez..."

He raised a finger.

"Listen."

The announcement came again.

"If you are a resident, remain sheltered until officers reach your location."

Almost immediately afterward—

The quiet shattered.

Heavy boots thundered into the building.

Several loud bangs echoed through the corridors.

Commands were shouted.

"Police!"

"Drop your weapon!"

"Hands where we can see them!"

Another voice shouted from farther away.

"Clear this hallway!"

The sounds multiplied throughout the massive residential community.

Doors opened.

More officers flooded each floor.

Residents could be heard crying again—this time with relief rather than terror.

Someone sobbed uncontrollably.

Another person repeatedly thanked God.

Children called out for their parents.

The building that had been held captive for an entire day suddenly burst back to life.

Ryquez stood.

He looked toward the secured entrance one final time.

Carefully...

He unlocked the first deadbolt.

Then the second.

Then removed the heavy security bar.

He didn't open the door immediately.

Instead, he waited.

A knock sounded several seconds later.

Three firm taps.

"Police!"

Another knock.

"If anyone is inside, identify yourselves!"

Ryquez finally opened the door.

Bright morning light poured into the darkened living quarters, making both of them squint after spending nearly twenty-four hours in darkness.

Standing outside were several heavily equipped officers.

One lowered his weapon the moment he saw them.

"Are either of you injured?"

Ryquez shook his head.

"No."

The officer's attention immediately shifted to Kaleyana.

His expression softened.

"Ma'am... are you alright?"

She nodded.

"I'm okay."

"You pregnant?"

She managed a tired smile.

"Very."

The officer glanced at another deputy.

"Let's get medical over here."

"It's just precaution," he reassured them. "We want everyone checked."

Ryquez nodded appreciatively.

"Thank you."

The officer stepped aside.

"You're safe now."

Those three words hung in the air.

Safe.

After everything...

The word almost didn't feel real.

Ryquez gently helped Kaleyana step into the hallway.

His arm wrapped securely around her from behind, supporting both her back and the weight of her belly.

She leaned into him without hesitation.

Together...

They slowly walked toward the courtyard.

The moment they stepped outside, neither of them spoke.

The cheerful holiday market from the previous morning was almost unrecognizable.

Vendor booths stood abandoned.

Some had been overturned.

Broken ornaments lay scattered across the pavement.

Wrapping paper drifted through the cold morning breeze.

Strings of Christmas lights hung loose where they had snapped during the chaos.

The towering Christmas tree still stood proudly in the center of the courtyard.

Its lights continued blinking peacefully.

The sight felt almost surreal.

Around them, emergency crews moved quickly through the complex.

Police officers escorted handcuffed gang members toward waiting vehicles outside the entrance.

Several suspects kept their heads lowered.

Others shouted angrily as they were led away.

Detectives spoke quietly with frightened residents.

Crime scene investigators photographed damaged storefronts.

Paramedics examined people sitting beneath blankets.

Some residents had minor injuries.

Others simply stared into space, unable to process what had happened.

A little boy suddenly spotted his grandfather across the courtyard.

"Grandpa!"

The elderly man turned.

Tears immediately filled both of their eyes.

The child ran as fast as his little legs could carry him before throwing himself into his grandfather's arms.

Nearby, a mother who had spent the night separated from her teenage daughter finally found her.

Neither said a word.

They simply held each other tightly, sobbing.

An elderly woman quietly thanked every officer she passed.

A bakery owner knelt beside the remains of his shattered display case, tears streaming down his face as neighbors gathered around to comfort him.

The owner of the flower shop hugged one of the police officers so tightly that she nearly couldn't speak through her tears.

Kaleyana watched everything unfold.

She couldn't look away.

Her breathing became shallow.

"So many people..."

Ryquez gently tightened his embrace from behind.

"I know."

She rested both of her hands over his forearm.

"I've never seen our building like this."

Neither had he.

The residential community had always been loud.

Children laughing.

Neighbors arguing over cookouts.

Music drifting through open windows.

People greeting one another in the hallways.

Now...

Almost everyone whispered.

Children clung tightly to their parents instead of running around.

Neighbors looked over their shoulders every few seconds.

Even the people who hadn't been physically harmed wore expressions of complete exhaustion.

The building itself seemed traumatized.

A paramedic approached the couple.

"Good morning."

Ryquez looked up.

"We'd like to check both of you, especially Mom and baby."

Kaleyana nodded quietly.

"Okay."

As they were guided toward the medical station, Ryquez never once released his hold on her.

His hands remained around her protectively.

Every few steps he glanced down to make sure she was comfortable.

Every time she slowed, he slowed with her.

Behind them, the officers continued escorting the last of the gang members out of the residential complex.

In front of them, neighbors slowly emerged from apartments, businesses, and storage rooms where they had spent the longest night of their lives.

Christmas was only days away.

Yet no one spoke about presents.

No one talked about holiday dinners.

No one mentioned the festival that had been planned.

Instead, hundreds of residents simply stood together in the courtyard, looking at one another with tear-filled eyes, silently realizing that although the lockdown had finally ended... the memories of those terrifying twenty-four hours would remain with them long after the police vehicles disappeared from the gates of the community. ✦══════════ 🌅 ✦ ══════════✦
