The last thing Maya remembered was leaning over her workshop desk at 2:00 AM, trying to calibrate a pocket-sized spatial compression core. Her back ached, her coffee was cold, and she had just muttered, *"If this motherboard bluescreens one more time, I’m throwing myself into a ditch."*
She didn't throw herself into a ditch. Instead, the core flashed a violent, blinding neon blue, the air pressure dropped to absolute zero, and she fell backward into total darkness.
Now, she was waking up on a cold, damp stone floor. The air smelled heavy, like ancient dust, mildew, and… copper?
"I say we drain her right here. Look at her clothes. Fabric like that doesn't exist in the lower realms. She's likely high-born nobility hiding out," a smooth, chilling voice echoed from the shadows.
"Are you blind, Julian? Look at those strange, glowing lines on her boots. She’s a witch," a sharper, feminine voice hissed back. "If we split the blood, I want the heart. The blood of an enchantress tastes like aged wine."
Maya blinked, rubbing her throbbing temples. Her vision slowly cleared, revealing a grand, decaying gothic hall. Ruined chandeliers hung from the ceiling, and the moonlight streamed through shattered stained-glass windows.
Standing over her were three people. Or rather, three incredibly pale, impossibly attractive people wearing velvet capes, leather corsets, and expressions of aristocratic hunger.
Maya blinked again. She let out a heavy, exhausted sigh and broke the eerie silence.
"Excuse me," Maya interrupted, her voice dripping with the annoyance of a tech engineer who had skipped lunch. "Where exactly am I? I was literally just in my office, and now I’m here. What is this place?"
The three figures froze. The one called Julian—a tall man with sharp cheekbones and dark hair—slowly narrowed his eyes. He leaned down, letting a pair of elongated, razor-sharp fangs slide out from beneath his upper lip. They glistened in the moonlight.
"You are in the Crimson Citadel, mortal," Julian whispered, trying to look as intimidating as possible. "And you are currently deciding how painful your death will be."
Maya stared at the fangs. Then she looked at the capes. Then she looked at the dramatic gothic architecture.
"What the actual fuck?" Maya muttered, sitting up and crossing her arms. "Who are you cosplayers? Is this a prank? Did the marketing department hire you because I missed the project deadline? Look, the vampire aesthetic is great, the fake teeth are super realistic, but I don't have time for Comic-Con right now."
Julian blinked, his menacing posture faltering for a fraction of a second. He exchanged an utterly baffled glance with the female vampire.
"What... what is a 'cause-player'?" the female vampire hissed, her brow furrowing in deep confusion. "And what tongue do you speak, mortal? What is a 'marketing department'?"
"Is it a curse?" Julian muttered, looking genuinely thrown off by her bizarre vocabulary. "She speaks in riddles. Perhaps her mind has snapped from fear."
"My mind hasn't snapped, you guys," Maya grumbled, waving her hand dismissively. "Just tell me where the nearest exit is."
Before the angry, confused vampires could figure out what a "Comic-Con" was, a soft, cheerful *“Boop-beep!”* echoed from behind Maya’s back...
A small, round, porcelain-white drone—no bigger than a grapefruit—floated out from under Maya's discarded jacket. It had two glowing digital eyes that blinked cutely, and a tiny holographic antenna that wagged like a dog's tail.
"Warning," a cheerful, high-pitched robotic voice chimed from the drone. "User Maya's heart rate is elevated. Detecting high levels of irritation and local theater actors. Would you like to deploy the workspace table to calm your nerves, Creator?"
"Not now, Mochi," Maya grumbled, waving her hand at the cute robot.
Julian bared his fangs fully, his eyes turning a predatory crimson. "I don't care what kind of magic trick that tiny construct is. I am taking the first bite!"
He lunged forward like a streak of shadow, claws extended straight for Maya's throat.
“Threat detected,” Mochi’s digital eyes instantly snapped from a friendly blue to a flashing, angry hazard-red. “Activating Emergency Defense Protocol: Scrap-Metal Specialist!”
In a fraction of a second, the cute little drone dropped to the floor. A tiny blue tractor beam shot out of its underbelly, dragging a heavy, rusted iron chandelier chain and a pile of broken stone pillars toward it.
Clang! Whirrr! Shhhk!
With terrifying mechanical speed, the cute drone literally absorbed the scrap metal into its internal spatial pocket, rearranged the atoms, and spit out a fully functioning, high-tech automated plasma-turret mounted on a heavy iron tripod.
The turret locked onto the lunging vampire with a loud, mechanical CLICK.
"Target locked," Mochi’s cute voice sounded distinctly less cute now. "Commencing aggressive negotiations."
Julian froze mid-air, staring down the glowing, humic-blue barrel of a sci-fi laser cannon that definitely didn't belong in a medieval fantasy world.
Maya smirked, leaning back against a stone pillar. "Alright, 'vampires.' Let's try this question again. Where the hell am I?"
Julian stared down the glowing blue barrel of the plasma turret, his lips curling into a arrogant, mocking sneer.
"A toy of iron and light?" Julian mocked, his voice dripping with ancient superiority. "Mortal, you have no idea what you are dealing with. We are the masters of the night. A vampire cannot be slain by primitive human trickery. Unless you wield a stake of blessed hawthorn or the pure light of the sun, you are nothing but a meal."
"Julian, wait—" the female vampire started, her nostrils suddenly flaring as she caught a whiff of the ozone charging the air.
"Silence, Eleanor! I will drain her dry!" Julian roared.
He lunged forward, moving like a blur of shadow and fabric, his razor-sharp claws extended to shred the mechanical construct to pieces.
*“Target approaching critical perimeter,”* Mochi’s robotic voice chirped with absolute calmness. *“Firing warning shot. Yield decreased to five percent.”*
*BOOM!*
A blinding, searing beam of pure, superheated plasma erupted from the turret's barrel. The flash was so intense it momentarily turned the dark gothic hall as bright as high noon. The sheer thermal energy didn't just carry heat; the plasma core simulated concentrated solar radiation.
The beam streaked past Julian's head by a mere millimeter. The absolute heat of the near-miss scorched the side of his pale cheek, leaving a black, smoking scratch that refused to heal instantly.
The plasma beam continued past him, slamming into the heavy, five-foot-thick stone wall of the citadel. With a deafening explosion, the masonry disintegrated. The beam punched a clean, perfectly circular, glowing molten hole right through the fortress, revealing the dark forest outside.
Julian tumbled to the floor, skidding on the damp stone, clutching his scorched cheek. His eyes were wide with genuine, primitive terror. The wound was sizzling, burning him from the inside out.
"Solar radiation..." Julian gasped, his voice trembling as he looked at his hand, which was now trembling. "What kind of sorcery... it burns like the dawn!"
Eleanor and the third vampire—a massive, silent man in heavy leather armor—instantly backed away from Maya, their hands raised defensively. Eleanor's arrogant demeanor vanished, replaced by an expression of panicked, diplomatic urgency.
"Hold! Wait!" Eleanor cried out, her eyes darting between Maya and the humming, ready-to-fire plasma cannon. "We yield! There is no need for further bloodshed, Lady... whoever you are!"
The large, silent vampire finally spoke, his deep voice shaking slightly. "That weapon... it carries the essence of the sun itself. Who are you? Which house of the High Sages do you belong to? Are you an emissary from the Light Kingdom?"
Maya slowly stood up, brushing the dust off her jeans. She looked at the giant molten hole in the wall, then looked back at the terrified vampires. She couldn't help but smirk.
"I told you guys," Maya said, crossing her arms as Mochi floated back up to her shoulder, its digital eyes blinking with a smug, satisfied blue light. "I'm just a tech engineer who missed her coffee break. Now, let's try this one more time. Where am I, and who is the person in charge around here?"
"A room," Eleanor repeated, her voice pitched slightly higher than usual as she kept one eye on Mochi’s humming plasma turret. "Yes, of course. We have... many rooms. The finest guest chambers in the east wing. They are yours, Lady Maya."
"Great," Maya said, patting her pockets. "And some coffee. Dark roast, preferably, but at this point, I’d take instant."
Eleanor and the silent giant, Garrick, exchanged a blank look.
"Is 'instant' a type of potion?" Eleanor asked hesitantly.
"It's a miracle in a cup, but never mind," Maya groaned, rubbing her temples. "Just show me the room. And you," she pointed a sharp finger at Julian, who was still clutching his scorched, slowly healing cheek on the floor, "don't even think about sneaking into my room tonight. Mochi has a motion-activated laser grid, and unlike me, he doesn't have a snooze button."
*“Affirmative!”* Mochi beeped cheerfully, spinning in a circle. *“Safety protocols are set to 'Vaporize' for unauthorized night-time guests!”*
Julian glared at her, but wisely kept his mouth shut.
Ten minutes later, Eleanor threw open a pair of heavy, creaking oak doors to reveal a massive bedchamber. It looked like a museum exhibit on the Black Plague. There was a canopy bed with dusty velvet curtains, dripping wax candles, cobwebs in the corners, and a stone hearth that looked like it hadn't seen a fire since the last century.
Maya stepped inside, crossed her arms, and began to pace.
"No outlets. No overhead lighting. What is the ventilation situation here? It smells like a tomb—literally. And don't get me started on the lack of basic plumbing. If I can't charge my tech or get hot running water, my productivity is going to crater. I’m basically running on a low-battery warning here, people!"
Eleanor and Garrick stood in the doorway, completely bewildered. To them, she was speaking a bizarre, ancient-sounding language full of words like *outlets*, *plumbing*, and *low-battery*. They had absolutely no idea what she was rambling about, but they didn't dare question her. Every time they even looked like they wanted to interrupt, Mochi would drift slightly closer, his glowing digital eyes narrowing defensively, making the vampires quickly nod and look incredibly respectful.
"It... it is the royal guest suite," Eleanor offered weakly, bowing her head.
"Whatever. Mochi, activate workspace mode."
*“Executing!”*
Mochi floated to the center of the room. With a soft chime, the round drone expanded. Metallic, interlocking plates slid out from its core, unfolding in mid-air to create a sleek, metallic folding table complete with a holographic interface, several micro-tools, and a glowing workspace lamp.
The vampires gasped, stepping back. Fearing the "magic" table, Eleanor quickly cleared her throat. "Lady Maya... perhaps you would like to see our town? To... clear your mind?"
"Actually, yes. I need to see what kind of resources we have to work with here," Maya agreed.
Before they left, however, Eleanor insisted on wrapping Maya in a heavy, thick velvet cloak, pulling the oversized hood low over her face.
"Why am I dressed like a medieval cultist?" Maya grumbled under her breath.
"In our town, humans are considered... nothing more than blood bags," Eleanor whispered urgently. "If the common vampires or the hungry beasts catch even a single whiff of your human scent, they will storm us. You must remain completely covered and heavily guarded."
True to her word, as they walked through the dark, gothic town square, Garrick and Eleanor flanked Maya closely, their hands on their weapons and their eyes darting around. The locals gave them a wide berth, terrified of the strange, heavily guarded 'noble' and the cute, floating white orb that kept emitting low, threatening beeps at anyone who dared to look too closely.
