Chapter One: The Sketch That Shouldn't Exist Part One

Rain had a way of making Blackridge look innocent.

From her small apartment window, Elara Ashford watched the city blur beneath the storm. The tall buildings reflected silver streaks of rain, hiding the cracks and darkness that lived between them.

Blackridge was beautiful from a distance.

Up close, it was a city built on secrets.

Elara knew that better than most.

She sat in front of her old wooden easel, staring at the unfinished painting in front of her. The canvas showed a woman surrounded by flowers, but something felt wrong.

The colors were perfect.

The details were perfect.

But it had no emotion.

And Elara had always believed art without emotion was nothing more than decoration.

With a tired sigh, she placed her brush down and reached for her black sketchbook.

Sketching was different.

Painting required patience.

Sketching required instinct.

Her pencil moved across the paper without hesitation. She didn't think about what she was creating. She simply followed the feeling guiding her hand.

A sharp jaw appeared.

Dark hair.

A strong face carved with shadows.

Then the eyes.

Elara stopped.

The man on the page looked back at her.

Not like a drawing.

Like a memory.

His eyes carried something she couldn't explain.

Pain.

Anger.

Loneliness.

She slowly lowered the pencil.

"Who are you?"

The question sounded ridiculous in the empty room.

It was only a sketch.

A stranger created from imagination.

Yet something inside her insisted otherwise.

She noticed details she didn't remember drawing.

A small scar near his eyebrow.

A cold expression hiding exhaustion.

A face that looked like someone who had survived things no person should have to survive.

Elara closed the sketchbook.

She didn't know it yet, but the face on that page belonged to the most feared man in Blackridge.

Damien Voss.

---

Across the city, inside a luxurious office high above the streets, Damien Voss looked over reports with a blank expression.

At thirty-two, he had everything people dreamed of.

Money.

Power.

Influence.

But none of it had given him peace.

People saw him as untouchable.

A businessman.

A genius.

A dangerous man.

They never saw the years of loss that created him.

A knock interrupted his thoughts.

His assistant entered carrying a file.

"Mr. Voss, something unusual was found at Ashbourne Gallery."

Damien didn't look up.

"What kind of unusual?"

"A portrait."

"Of?"

The assistant hesitated.

"You."

That finally caught his attention.

The file was placed on the desk.

Inside was a photograph of a charcoal drawing.

Damien stared at it.

For the first time in years, he had no immediate response.

Because the artist hadn't simply drawn his appearance.

She had drawn what he hid.

The tiredness behind his eyes.

The weight on his shoulders.

The darkness he carried.

"Who created this?"

The assistant answered quietly.

"Elara Ashford."

Damien repeated the name in his mind.

Ashford.

Something about it felt familiar.

Something forgotten.

"Find her."

The assistant nodded.

"Should I look into her background?"

Damien looked again at the portrait.

"Everything."

After the assistant left, Damien remained alone.

He had spent his entire life believing secrets were weapons.

But now someone had unknowingly revealed one of his.

And he needed to know why.

Because no stranger should have been able to see him so clearly.

The Sketch That Shouldn't Exist Part Two

The darkness inside Blackwood Manor felt alive.

Elara stood completely still, listening.

The silence after the power outage was worse than any sound.

Then came another knock.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Not from the front door.

Not from a window.

From somewhere inside the house.

Damien immediately moved in front of Elara.

The action was instinctive.

Protective.

She noticed.

"You know someone is here," she whispered.

His eyes remained fixed on the hallway.

"Stay behind me."

"Damien—"

"Please."

The word surprised her.

Not because he said it.

Because of the way he said it.

There was no command.

Only concern.

Elara stepped back.

Damien moved through the darkness with careful silence. Every step showed the confidence of someone who had spent years surviving dangerous situations.

A few seconds later, emergency lights flickered on.

The hallway was empty.

But something had changed.

A door at the end of the corridor stood open.

Damien had locked it earlier.

Elara followed him despite his warning.

Inside was a small study filled with old documents and photographs.

On the desk sat a single envelope.

Damien picked it up.

No name.

No address.

Only one symbol.

A broken circle with a crescent moon.

The same symbol from the painting.

Elara felt her stomach tighten.

"That symbol..."

Damien looked at her.

"You've seen it before."

She shook her head.

"I don't remember. But it feels familiar."

He opened the envelope.

Inside was one photograph.

His expression changed the moment he saw it.

Elara stepped closer.

The photograph showed two families together.

The Voss family.

The Ashford family.

And standing between them...

A young Marcus Vale.

Elara looked confused.

"Your advisor?"

Damien stared at the image.

"Yes."

"Was he there that night?"

A long silence followed.

"I don't know."

For the first time, Elara saw uncertainty in Damien's eyes.

And that scared her more than anger would have.

The next morning, Blackwood Manor was surrounded by security.

Damien had doubled protection around the estate.

Elara noticed.

"You think whoever left that message will come back?"

"Yes."

The answer was immediate.

"Why?"

"Because they wanted us to find it."

Elara looked at the photograph again.

"Whoever did this knows about our families."

Damien nodded.

"And they know you."

A chill ran through her.

"Why me?"

Damien didn't answer.

Because he had been asking himself the same question.

Later that day, Elara returned home.

She placed the photograph beside her mother's letter and studied them together.

The answers were close.

She could feel it.

But every answer created more questions.

Why had her mother hidden the truth?

Why had Damien's family been destroyed?

And why was she the one who painted a man she had never met?

She opened her sketchbook.

The portrait of Damien was still there.

But now something else caught her attention.

Behind his figure, hidden in the shadows she had drawn without realizing...

Was the same symbol.

The broken circle.

Her breathing stopped.

She had drawn it before ever seeing it.

At Blackwood Manor, Damien stood alone in his office.

Marcus entered quietly.

"You found something."

Damien looked at him.

"Someone broke into the old study."

Marcus's expression changed slightly.

"Impossible."

"Nothing is impossible."

A pause.

Then Damien placed the photograph on the desk.

Marcus looked at it.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Damien noticed.

"You recognize it."

Marcus recovered quickly.

"I remember the families."

"No."

Damien's voice became colder.

"You remember something else."

Silence.

The two men looked at each other.

Fifteen years of loyalty.

Fifteen years of trust.

And suddenly, Damien wondered how much of his life he truly understood.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

"Some truths are dangerous when they return."

Damien stepped closer.

"So are lies."

That night, Elara received a message.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence.

Stop searching for the truth your mother died protecting.

She stared at the screen.

Her hands shook.

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

Her.

Standing outside Blackwood Manor.

Taken that evening.

Someone had been watching her.

Someone close enough to see everything.

Elara looked toward the dark window of her apartment.

For the first time, she understood.

The sketch had not brought her into Damien Voss's world.

The truth had.

And now that she had found it...

It would not let her go.
