THE CAPTAIN'S CATCH

PROLOGUE

Every great storm requires an ecosystem to feed it. In the high-stakes, glittering world of the Indian T20 Cricket League, the collision between the country's most volatile captain and his fiercely stubborn PR manager wasn't just a private war-it was a spectator sport.

From the luxury penthouses of Mumbai's elite to the chaotic, spice-scented lanes of Old Delhi, these were the people caught in the blast radius of #Kabanya.

The Eye of the Storm

Kabir Malhotra had a reputation that preceded him like a thunderclap. At twenty-eight, the captain of the Mumbai Mavericks was widely considered the most lethal top-order batsman India had seen in a decade. He played cricket the way he lived his life: with brutal, uncompromising precision and an icy disregard for

anyone else's opinion. Off the field, he was a ghost in the media landscape, refusing interviews, scowling at paparazzi, and earning the title of the "Ice King." He wore his wealth in quiet, understated ways-bespoke linen shirts, raw luxury watches, and a permanent, intimidating quiet. But beneath the stoic exterior lay a man driven by a fierce, silent loyalty to the Malhotra name, a dangerous protective streak, and a temper that, when sparked, could burn down his own career.

Ananya Sharma was the only person in India who looked at the Ice King and didn't blink. As the Mavericks' Head of Crisis PR, she was a twenty-six-year-old force of nature fueled entirely by triple-shot iced Americanos and an unyielding sense of duty. Ananya didn't just manage reputations; she managed egos. Armed with sharp green pantsuits, a lethal side-eye, and a mind that calculated media strategies three steps ahead of the tabloids, she had spent years fixing the elite's worst mistakes. She was loud, fiercely independent, and utterly unimpressed by fame. Yet, her armor had one glaring crack: her fierce devotion to her middle-class family back in Delhi, a vulnerability that was about to trap her in the very trap she had spent her life avoiding.

The Malhotra Empire

To understand Kabir, one had to understand the house that built him.

At the apex sat Kiran Malhotra, universally known as Dadi. She was a woman who didn't raise her voice because she simply didn't need to. Dadi ruled the multi-billion-crore Malhotra Group and the family's cricket franchise with a velvet glove over an iron fist. Draped in flawless, crisp white Chanderi sarees, her silver hair pinned into a perfect bun, she viewed the world as a giant chessboard. She played her moves months in advance, and her decision to force a marriage contract was done with the calm serenity of a woman who knew she could never lose.

Beneath her was Rajveer Malhotra, Kabir's father. A former national captain and a living cricket legend, Rajveer's shadow was long and suffocating. He viewed his son not through the lens of fatherhood, but through the unforgiving metrics of strike rates, captaincy records, and legacy.

Balancing the heavy masculine energy of the household was nineteen-year-old Meera Malhotra. A Gen-Z fashion influencer with millions of followers, Meera used her brother's fame for aesthetic content but fiercely loved him behind closed doors. The moment Ananya stepped into the Malhotra mansion, Meera recognized a kindred spirit-and immediately began plotting to turn the fake engagement into a reality, if only for the sheer drama of it.

The Sharma Clan

Six hundred miles away, in the bustling heart of Delhi, lived the antithesis of the Malhotra royalty.

Satish Sharma, Ananya's father, was a gentle, round-faced man whose life revolved around the sweet shop his grandfather had built in Chandni Chowk. He poured his soul into frying the perfect, syrup-dripping jalebis, and his greatest pride was his daughter's corporate success in Mumbai. He was easily stressed, fiercely protective, and deeply intimidated by the ultra-wealthy.

His wife, Sunita Sharma, was the undisputed matriarch of the neighborhood. A woman of boundless energy and infinite dramatic flair, Sunita operated as the chief intelligence officer of her local WhatsApp gossip groups. She had an eligible bachelor's horoscope stashed in every drawer and firmly believed that there was no crisis in life that a heavy plate of homemade chicken biryani couldn't fix.

Rounding out the household was Rohan Sharma, Ananya's seventeen-year-old brother. Rohan was a hyperactive teenager who spent his days failing his mock exams, playing street cricket, and worshiping Kabir Malhotra from afar. His loyalty to his sister was absolute-until the prospect of getting a signed Mumbai Mavericks bat came into play, at which point he was entirely willing to sell her out to his future brother-in-law.

The Mavericks and The Enemy

In the locker room, the dynamics were no less chaotic.

Zayn Malik was the Mavericks' star all-rounder and Kabir's closest friend, though anyone watching them would wonder how. With bleach-blonde hair, a permanent smirk, and a complete lack of a verbal filter, Zayn possessed pure golden-retriever energy. He was the only person brave enough to tease Kabir to his face, and he instantly took it upon himself to act as the self-appointed captain of the #Kabanya fan club.

Contrasting Zayn's warmth was the looming shadow of Devansh Kapoor. The captain of the rival Delhi Titans, Devansh was everything Kabir was not: a media darling, a smooth talker who smiled for every camera, and a master of psychological warfare on the pitch. But beneath the polished exterior lay a bitter, malicious streak. Devansh shared a dark history with Kabir on the field, and a complicated past with Ananya from their university days-making him the perfect villain waiting for the right moment to watch them both fall.

The pieces were on the board. The contract was waiting. And as the media vans began to circle the stadium, the players took their places for a game that none of them knew how to lose.

[Hey there.....it's my first time writing so please forgive my mistakes....see you soon]

[after completing the novel, there will be a chat story too.....I will try to detail it more in there]

CHAPTER 1: THE BLOWOUT

The air inside the Wankhede Stadium press briefing room was thick with the scent of cheap air freshener and expensive panic.

Ananya Sharma aggressively massaged her temples, wondering if it was too late to faking her own death and moving to the Himalayas. On the flat-screen TV mounted on the wall, the sports news anchor was practically hyperventilating.

"...unprecedented scenes tonight at the stadium. Mumbai Mavericks captain Kabir Malhotra has once again proven why he is called the Ice King-though tonight, the ice cracked completely. A brutal post-match physical altercation with Delhi Titans captain Devansh Kapoor has left fans shocked and the board scrambling for answers..."

"Shut it off," Ananya commanded, not looking up.

Vikram, Kabir's long-suffering personal manager, frantically scrambled for the remote, his hands shaking so violently he almost dropped it. "Ananya, the board is on line one, Puma is threatening to pull their multi-crore endorsement on line two, and his Dadi has already called three times. What do we do?"

Ananya stood up, straightening the blazer of her sharp emerald-green pantsuit. She was twenty-six, caffeinated to a dangerous degree, and currently the only thing standing between India's most beloved, hot-tempered cricket captain and career annihilation.

"What we do," Ananya said, her voice dripping with terrifying calm, "is go confront the beast."

She marched down the concrete corridors of the stadium, the rhythmic clack-clack of her heels sounding like a death march. Two security guards stood outside the private dressing room, looking visibly relieved to see her. She pushed the heavy door open and stepped inside.

Kabir Malhotra was sitting on the edge of a training table, unstrapping his batting pads with brutal, deliberate jerks. He hadn't even washed the dirt from his jersey. His jaw was clenched so hard the muscle ticked, and a fresh red scrape lined his left knuckle. He looked big, brooding, and profoundly dangerous-like a thunderstorm trapped in a locker room.

"Get out, Vikram," Kabir growled without looking up, his voice a low, gravelly baritone.

"Vikram isn't here," Ananya said, closing the door behind her with a soft, ominous click. "Just the woman whose weekend you completely ruined."

Kabir's head snapped up. His dark, intense eyes locked onto hers, burning with residual adrenaline. "I'm not in the mood for a PR lecture, Ananya."

"Oh, you think this is a lecture?" Ananya scoffed, crossing her arms and walking right into his personal space. "Kabir, you didn't just break the code of conduct tonight. You threw a punch on live national television! To Devansh Kapoor! Do you know what the top trending topic on Twitter is right now? #BanMalhotra."

Kabir swung his legs off the table, standing up to his full, towering height. He cast a massive shadow over her, but Ananya didn't flinch. She had dealt with demanding corporate CEOs and dramatic Bollywood starlets; she was not going to be intimidated by a man who chased a leather ball for a living.

"He spoke about my family," Kabir said, his voice dropping an octave, vibrating with a dark, dangerous undercurrent. "He crossed a line. I don't care about the cameras, and I don't care about the brand deals. I'd hit him again."

"Well, congratulations, hero, because that punch just cost your family's franchise fifty crores in stock value in the last twenty minutes," Ananya shot back, her brown eyes flashing. "Your father is furious. Your Dadi's blood pressure is probably skyrocketing. And the board is currently drafting a suspension letter."

That seemed to hit a nerve. The anger in Kabir's eyes flickered, replaced for a fraction of a second by a raw, heavy exhaustion, before the icy mask slipped back into place. He turned away, throwing his gloves into his kit bag with a violent thud.

"Fix it then," he muttered. "That's what I pay you for."

"I can fix a bad interview, Kabir. I can fix a leaked video of you partying," Ananya said, stepping closer, her voice dropping from angry to fiercely urgent. "I cannot fix a public assault when you already have a reputation for being an arrogant, unhinged lone wolf. The media doesn't see a protector. They see a spoiled brat who thinks he's above the law."

Kabir turned back around, his face inches from hers. She could smell the sweat, the leather, and the faint, crisp scent of his expensive cologne. "I am the captain of this team. I don't need the media to like me. I need them to watch me win."

"They won't be watching you win if you're banned from the season," she whispered harshly.

Before Kabir could fire back, the heavy oak door flew open.

"Oh, thank god, you're both here," a voice chirped.

Zayn Malik, the team's star all-rounder and resident chaotic butterfly, strolled into the tense room, completely ignoring the fact that the air was practically vibrating with hostility. He was still wearing his sweaty jersey, a mischievous grin plastered across his face.

"Zayn, get out," Kabir warned.

"Can't do that, skipper. The matriarch has arrived," Zayn said, saluting cheerfully. "And she looks like she's about to execute someone. Good luck!"

Zayn vanished just as quickly as he appeared, replacing himself with a figure that made both Kabir and Ananya instantly straighten their posture.

Kiran Malhotra-known to the country as Dadi-stepped into the room. She was draped in a flawless, stiff white Chanderi saree, her silver hair styled into a perfect bun. She held a cane with a silver handle, though she clearly didn't need it to walk. She possessed the kind of quiet, terrifying authority that could silence a stadium of eighty thousand people with a single glance.

"Dadi," Kabir began, his voice losing all of its aggressive edge. "I can explain-"

Dadi raised a single, manicured hand. Kabir instantly shut his mouth.

She didn't look at her grandson. Instead, her sharp eyes scanned Ananya, taking in her disheveled hair, her fierce posture, and the fiery determination in her eyes. A strange, knowing glint passed through the elderly woman's eyes.

"Ananya, beta," Dadi said, her voice smooth and calm, completely betraying the chaos outside. "Is my grandson's career salvageable?"

Ananya took a breath, smoothing down her blazer. "It will take a miracle, Malhotra ji. We need something massive to shift the narrative. Something that proves Kabir isn't an unstable liability, but a responsible, mature man who is ready to take accountability."

Dadi nodded slowly, tapping her cane once against the concrete floor.

"Excellent. I have just the solution," Dadi announced. She finally looked at Kabir, her eyes narrowing slightly. "The board will not suspend a man who is actively reforming his life. And the public loves nothing more than a reformed bad boy."

Kabir frowned, a sudden look of dread washing over his handsome features. "What are you talking about, Dadi?"

Dadi turned back to Ananya, a small, elegant smile playing on her lips. "You are going to marry him."

The locker room went dead silent.

Ananya blinked. Once. Twice. "I'm sorry, I think the stadium acoustics are bad. It sounded like you said-"

"You heard me, beta," Dadi said calmly. "A six-month engagement. A public, high-profile relationship to soften his image. You will teach him how to behave, and he will show the world he is settling down. It fixes the PR nightmare, and it satisfies my desire to see him married."

"Are you insane?" Kabir erupted, stepping forward.

"Dadi, she's my PR manager! She spends half her time yelling at me, and I spend the other half wishing she worked for another team!"

"I am not marrying him!" Ananya gasped, her professional facade completely shattering. "With all due respect, Malhotra ji, he is arrogant, emotionally unavailable, and a walking HR violation! I would rather manage a team of toddlers!"

Dadi looked between the two of them, completely unfazed by the sudden explosion of protests. In fact, her smile only widened.

"You both have exactly twenty-four hours to accept the terms," Dadi said smoothly, turning on her heel toward the door. "If you refuse, Kabir, your father will strip you of the captaincy by tomorrow evening. And Ananya, beta... I hear your father's sweet shop expansion in Delhi is looking for a major investor. It would be a shame if the Malhotra Group had to pull their funding."

With that final, devastating mic-drop, the matriarch walked out, leaving the door wide open.

Ananya stood frozen, the breath knocked completely out of her. Her father's dream business. The Malhotras held the keys to it.

Slowly, she turned her head to look at Kabir. He was already staring at her, his jaw tense, his dark eyes wide with a mixture of shock and utter fury.

"Don't look at me," Kabir growled, though his voice lacked its previous fire. "I didn't plan this."

Ananya let out a ragged, hysterical laugh, burying her face in her hands. "Welcome to the team, Captain," she muttered into her palms. "We are officially screwed."

CHAPTER 2: THE ULTIMATUM

The Malhotra mansion in Malabar Hill did not look like a home; it looked like a fortress constructed entirely of imported Italian marble, bulletproof glass, and generational wealth.

Ananya Sharma sat on the edge of a velvet wingback chair in the grand study, her fingers wrapped around a cup of bone china tea that she was entirely too terrified to drink. Opposite her, lounging on a leather sofa with his long legs stretched out in front of him, Kabir Malhotra was staring at the ceiling. He had changed into a crisp, charcoal-gray henley that made him look less like a disgraced cricket captain and more like an off-duty runway model.

He was also radiating enough dark, tense energy to power the entire city of Mumbai.

"The silence in this room is highly dramatic," Zayn Malik observed, stepping into the study with a plate of chocolate chip cookies he had clearly stolen from the kitchen. He bypassed Kabir and offered the plate to Ananya. "Cookie, partner? It might be your last meal before you become a Malhotra. Trust me, the family dinners are brutal."

"Zayn," Kabir growled, not moving his gaze from the ceiling. "If you don't shut up, I'm going to make sure Coach runs you through five consecutive beep tests tomorrow morning."

Zayn held up his hands in mock defeat, sinking into an adjacent armchair. "Just trying to lighten the mood, skipper. The media outside your gates looks like a scene from a zombie apocalypse. They're practically foaming at the mouth."

"They aren't the only ones," Ananya muttered, checking her phone. Her inbox was a graveyard of unread emails from furious brand managers. "The Board of Control for Cricket in India has called an emergency meeting for tomorrow at noon. If we don't present a united front-and a massive counter-narrative-by 11:00 AM, the suspension is a done deal, Kabir."

Before Kabir could reply, the heavy double doors of the study swung open.

Kiran Malhotra walked in, followed closely by Vikram, who was carrying a thick, leather-bound legal folder. Dadi's white silk saree rustled softly against the floor as she took her seat behind the massive mahogany desk. The air in the room instantly shifted.

"Vikram," Dadi commanded quietly. "Read the terms."

Vikram swallowed hard, adjusting his glasses. He looked at Ananya with an expression that begged for forgiveness. "Right. As per the directive of Mrs. Kiran Malhotra, the proposed contractual relationship between Mr. Kabir Malhotra and Miss Ananya Sharma will operate under the following parameters:

Clause One: The duration of the fake engagement will be exactly six months, culminating in a mutual, amicable 'split' due to demanding career schedules.

Clause Two: Miss Sharma will relocate to Mr. Malhotra's penthouse in Lower Parel to maintain the validity of the arrangement for the paparazzi. Separate bedrooms will, of course, be maintained.

Clause Three: Mr. Malhotra will issue a formal, televised public apology written entirely by Miss Sharma, attributing his recent on-field behavior to 'personal stress regarding his upcoming commitment to his long-time family friend'."

"Long-time family friend?" Kabir interrupted, a harsh, mocking laugh escaping his lips. He finally sat up, his dark eyes snapping to his grandmother. "Dadi, I met her exactly seven months ago when she yelled at me for throwing a water bottle at a journalist. We aren't friends. We barely tolerate each other."

"The public does not care about timelines, Kabir," Dadi replied smoothly, sipping her tea. "They care about a story. A wild, untamed bachelor being brought to his knees by a respectable, intelligent woman? It is a narrative as old as time, and it works every single time."

"And what about my family?" Ananya asked, her voice tight. Her heart was hammering against her ribs. "You mentioned my father's business."

Dadi looked at Ananya, her expression softening into something genuinely warm, though no less calculating. "The Malhotra Group will officially approve a fifty-crore expansion fund for Sharma Sweets Delhi. The first installment will be wired to your father's account the moment the press release goes live tomorrow morning. If you walk away before the six months are up, the funding is retracted."

Ananya felt the breath leave her lungs. Fifty crores. It wasn't just an expansion; it was life-changing wealth. It meant her father could finally stop working sixteen-hour days in the scorching heat of Chandni Chowk. It meant her brother's college education was entirely secure.

It also meant she was selling her soul to a man who looked like he wanted to throw her out of a moving vehicle.

"You're blackmailing us," Kabir said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register.

"I am saving your legacy," Dadi corrected, her eyes flashing with a sudden, iron-hard intensity that mirrored Kabir's own temper. "Your father gave his life to this franchise, Kabir. I will not watch you flush it down the toilet because you cannot control your fists. You will sign this contract, or you will watch the board hand your captaincy over to Devansh Kapoor by tomorrow afternoon."

The mention of Devansh's name was like gasoline on an open flame. Kabir's jaw clenched so hard a muscle violently ticked. The rivalry between them wasn't just professional; it was deeply, bitterly personal. The thought of Devansh lifting the championship trophy while wearing Kabir's captaincy armband was a humiliation he couldn't survive.

Silence descended upon the room, heavy and suffocating.

Kabir stood up, striding over to the desk. He grabbed the heavy fountain pen from Vikram's trembling hand. Without looking at Ananya, he slashed his signature across the bottom of the parchment page.

He turned around, leaning against the edge of the desk, his arms crossed over his chest as he fixed his intense, burning gaze on her.

"Your turn, Miss Sharma," Kabir murmured, his tone dripping with bitter challenge. "Let's see how much your morals are worth."

Ananya stood up, her legs feeling like lead. She walked over to the desk, ignoring the smug twist of his lips. She picked up the pen, her hand completely steady despite the chaos screaming in her mind.

"My morals are intact, Captain Malhotra," she said softly, looking him dead in the eye. "I'm just adding a clause of my own."

She flipped to the final page and wrote in clear, elegant handwriting: Clause Four: Under no circumstances will personal boundaries be crossed. This is strictly business.

She signed her name right underneath it with a sharp flourish.

"Excellent," Dadi said, clapping her hands together softly. "Vikram, prepare the cameras for tomorrow morning. Zayn, ensure the team is briefed. Ananya, beta... I suggest you go pack your bags. Your new life begins at dawn."

As the room began to clear, Ananya turned to leave, but a heavy hand gripped her elbow, stopping her in her tracks. The heat of Kabir's palm bled through the fabric of her sleeve.

She turned around, finding herself dangerously close to his broad chest.

"Let's get one thing straight, Ananya," Kabir whispered, his voice a low, gravelly warning that sent an unwelcome shiver straight down her spine. "You might be running my PR, but you do not run my life. We play this game for the cameras. But the second we are behind closed doors? You stay on your side of the penthouse, and I stay on mine."

Ananya pulled her arm out of his grip, tilting her chin up to meet his gaze with fierce defiance.

"Don't flatter yourself, Captain," she shot back, her voice echoing slightly in the quiet study. "My favorite part of this contract is the expiration date."
