Midnight, Blade

The weight of blade

The room is suffocatingly opulent. Deep velvet curtains swallow the city lights. KORN (40s, sharp, predatory) paces near the window, a crystal glass of whiskey in his hand. He stops, looking at PRAE (20s, hair short, eyes cold, wearing a silk robe that feels like armor).

KORN: You’re quiet tonight. Usually, you have so much to say about how "beautiful" my collection is. Don’t you like the view from up here?

PRAE doesn't look at the window. She is watching his reflection in the dark glass. She grips the edge of the velvet duvet, her nails digging into the fabric until they ache.

PRAE: The view is fine, Korn. It’s just... overwhelming. Everything here is so heavy.

KORN: (Laughs, a dry, humorless sound) That’s the price of power, Prae. You get used to the weight.

He moves closer, the floorboards creaking. He sits on the edge of the bed. He smells like expensive tobacco and arrogance. He reaches out, his fingers tracing the line of her jaw. Prae suppresses the urge to flinch. Her hand is beneath the duvet, gripping the handle of the knife. The metal is freezing, a sharp contrast to the heat of the room.

KORN: You know, I’ve had many people in this room. Many who tried to play games. Do you know what happens to them?

PRAE: (Voice steady, eerily calm) They lose the game.

KORN: Exactly. And they lose much more than that. But you... you’re different. You’re like a shadow. You’re here, yet you’re not.

He leans in, his lips brushing the sensitive skin of her neck. Prae feels a jolt of revulsion, but she uses it—she channels it into the focus of the blade.

PRAE: (Whispering) Do you ever feel a cold wind, Korn? Even in a room this hot?

KORN: (Paused, his voice dropping) What are you talking about?

PRAE: It’s a feeling. Like something is standing right behind you, waiting for you to turn around. It’s the feeling of a debt finally being called in.

She moves with surgical precision, sliding the knife out from under the silk. The light catches the blade—a sliver of moonlight in the dark.

The sound of the city fades into a low, oceanic hum. The transition is brutal. The screen washes out with sunlight.

The beach is desolate. The wind is whipping the sand into miniature dunes. LIN (20s, soft, fragile, wearing a thin sweater) is huddled against a piece of driftwood. Her eyes are hollow, focused on a point in the ocean that doesn't exist.

PRAE (Younger, long hair, wearing a worn-out baseball cap) approaches. She moves slowly. She is not the predator yet; she is a girl trying to find her place in a world that feels too large.

PRAE: (Softly) You’re going to get hypothermia if you stay here until the tide comes in.

Lin doesn't look up. She doesn't even blink.

LIN: Maybe I want to be taken by the tide.

Prae stops a few feet away. She looks at Lin—the way her hands are trembling, the way she looks like a broken doll.

PRAE: The ocean doesn't care if you're sad. It’ll just wash you away. It’s a waste of a life.

Lin finally looks up. Her eyes are glassy, haunted. She looks at Prae—at the worn cap, the hesitant posture.

LIN: What would you know about it? You don’t look like you’re having a great day either.

Prae reaches up, her fingers lingering on the brim of her cap. It’s the only thing that makes her feel safe.

PRAE: I don’t. But I’m still standing.

Prae kneels in the sand. She doesn't ask for permission. She reaches out and places her cap on Lin’s head, shielding her from the harsh, biting wind.

PRAE: Take it. It’s warmer than the sand.

LIN: (Voice barely a whisper) Why?

PRAE: Because nobody should have to be cold alone.

They sit in silence as the sun sinks into the water. It is a long, excruciatingly detailed scene—the sound of the waves, the cold air, the tentative way Lin reaches out to touch the fabric of the cap. For the first time, the audience sees the birth of the bond that will eventually destroy them both.
