Archie lost his focus on the flower arrangement he was working on that morning when he heard the flower shop’s door chime ring.

( looked up and saw Markie entering through the glass door)

(holding two lattes in paper cups.)

(Handed the cup of coffee to Archie.)

I’ve brought your morning dose of caffeine.
Markie
I also arrived early because I know you need to finish those arrangements you’re working on right away,

So I’ll just take care of the other customers who come in.

(Took the cup of coffee and drank it.)

I even told Jen yesterday that I’d finish this before lunch break,

Jen Florencio is his best friend of his who owned one of the Florencio Flowers branches. When the friend offered him a job at the flower shop, he did not hesitate at all.
Aside from having a talent for arranging flowers, it was also what he loved doing. Not to mention, he got to earn money while doing something he truly enjoyed.
The shop was located near a business district, and theirs was the only flower shop close to the office buildings and restaurants. That was why it was not difficult for them to build up a steady stream of regular customers.

(As he rode the elevator up to his office, he steeled himself. )
He was certain Sumire would not forget his birthday—even if that was the very last thing he wanted anyone to remember. And he grew worried about what she might be planning to do.

His mother lost her life right after giving birth to him.
That is why he refuses to celebrate his birthday.

On his way there, he passed by Sumire’s office first; he gave a silent prayer of thanks and saw that her door was closed
Before he could even sit down in his swivel chair, he immediately noticed the phone’s blinking red light.

(pressed the button to listen to the pending message)

(immediately off the phone quickly, before the song even finished playing.)
Yasuaki sank into his chair, propped his elbows on the desk, and buried his face in his hands, trying to hold back his rising frustration.
Yasuaki could only pray Sumire wouldn’t go so far as to bring him a cake while they were at work. It would be enough if she just let the day pass quietly.

I get Thursday and Friday off?

(laughed at Jen’s antics)
Jen's looked even more excited and giddy than Kathy herself.
Yasuaki picked up the joker’s hat Sumire had left behind, and quickly tossed it into the small trash bin under his office desk before stepping out of his room.
He left the office early to visit his parents’ graves—this was what he did every year on his birthday. His siblings did the same, but he always got there first.
