Stolen But Never Lost

Chapter 1

For centuries, no daughter had been born into the family. They believed an ancient curse had stolen every girl before she could ever enter their lives.

Then, a miracle happened.

A daughter was born.

Her father held her with trembling hands. Her mother wept tears of joy. Likewise, her four brothers cried as they promised to protect her forever.

Furthermore, her grandparents bowed before God in gratitude, while her two uncles and aunts thanked every deity they knew for blessing the family at last.

She was born surrounded by love.

But one night, she vanished into the shadows.

The house that had once echoed with laughter fell into unbearable silence. Hope slowly turned into grief, and every passing day carved a deeper wound into their hearts.

One silent prayer echoed through the broken family:

"If this was how our happiness was meant to end... then why did You let us taste it at all, God?"

While one family was consumed by an endless abyss of pain, somewhere else another family continued to live... carrying a secret that would one day change everything.

A baby girl, abandoned in the middle of a forest and left to die, was found by a family that had already lost every reason to keep living.

A father, haunted by the memory of his wife dying in a fire.

A young boy, forced to watch his mother burn before his eyes.

They picked up the infant with only one intention—to take her to an orphanage.

But the moment her tiny fingers wrapped around the man's finger, something inside him shattered.

The emptiness he had carried for so long gave way to a feeling he thought he had buried forever.

He could no longer let her go.

In saving the abandoned child, the broken family unknowingly began saving themselves.

He held the baby close to his chest.

For the first time since the fire, he cried.

Not silent tears.

Not restrained grief.

He broke down.

The little boy, his body trembling, wrapped his arms around his father and whispered through his sobs,

"Maybe... maybe Mom sent her from heaven so we wouldn't be alone anymore. Maybe she's her gift... so we could learn to live again."

The man gently stroked his son's hair, his own tears falling onto the child's head.

With a faint, broken smile, he replied,

"Maybe you're right. Maybe... she's the life we've been waiting for."

As the tiny girl slept peacefully in his arms, neither of them knew that she wasn't just an abandoned child.

She was someone else's miracle.

And somewhere, another family was still searching for the daughter they had lost.

They carried the baby home.

For the first time in two years, the mansion felt like a home instead of a mausoleum.

The butler and the servants gathered at the entrance, expecting to see the same haunted expressions they had witnessed every day since the tragedy.

Instead, they heard a tiny coo.

Their master stood there with a calm, peaceful smile, a sleeping baby cradled in his arms. Beside him, the young boy couldn't stop grinning.

The servants froze.

It was James, the old butler, who finally broke the silence.

"Who... is this? And where did you get her?"

The little boy puffed out his cheeks.

"She's a baby. A baby girl, not it. And she's my sister, Uncle James."

"What?"

James staggered back dramatically, clutching his chest.

"You kidnapped a baby? Oh, dear Lord! What have you done? I can't believe this. After years of loyal service, I'm finally going to jail because of my master!"

The man shot him an unamused look.

"Stop being so dramatic, James. Do you really think I'd do something like that?"

"Then explain."

"I found her near the forest."

His expression darkened.

"Someone left her there... to die."

The room fell silent.

No one spoke another word.

All eyes slowly turned toward the tiny girl sleeping peacefully in his arms, completely unaware that fate had just rewritten all of their lives.

Chapter 2

Finally, James spoke in a quiet voice.

"But... are you sure? What if she wasn't abandoned? What if she was simply lost?"

The question struck Kylie harder than he expected.

The thought was unbearable.

He couldn't build a new life by stealing someone else's.

Silence filled the room.

Then Alex, far more mature than any child his age should have been, stepped forward.

"If she was lost, someone would be searching for her."

He looked at James with steady eyes.

"But, Uncle James... that forest is known as a death trap. Almost no one who enters it ever comes back alive. Even Father and I only go there because Mother's grave is nearby, and we never dare venture deep inside."

He glanced at the sleeping baby.

"Do you really think any parent would leave their child there... alone?"

James lowered his gaze.

"No..."

A small smile appeared on Kylie's face.

James sighed before muttering,

"You're right, Young Master. I worried too much."

He looked at the little girl and chuckled softly.

"Perhaps this little one is destined to be stuck with your family..."

Then he looked at Kylie with a teasing smile.

"...just like I am."

For the first time in years, a quiet laugh echoed through the house.

Kylie turned to one of the servants.

"Bring the finest cradle money can buy. I want it placed in my room immediately."

"At once, Sir."

Just as he was about to walk away with the baby in his arms, a pair of tiny hands tugged at his sleeve.

"Father..."

Kylie looked down.

"Don't you think children should sleep together?"

Kylie frowned.

He wasn't ready to share his daughter.

Not with anyone.

Not even with his own son.

He cleared his throat and replied with complete seriousness.

"The Santiago family has a long-standing tradition. Every newborn sleeps in their father's room."

Alex blinked.

"...Really?"

"Of course."

"And... until what age?"

Kylie hesitated.

"Well..."

He glanced around for an answer.

"...That's a rather complicated tradition."

Alex slowly turned toward James.

The old butler had both lips tightly pressed together, his shoulders shaking as he desperately tried not to burst into laughter.

When Alex looked at him questioningly, James gave the tiniest nod, silently playing along.

Before Alex could ask another question, Kylie spun around and hurried into his room, clutching the baby protectively.

The bedroom door shut with a loud click.

Alex and James stood frozen for a moment.

Then they looked at each other.

"...He has completely lost it," James whispered.

Alex sighed dramatically.

"I think I just got replaced."

From behind the closed door came a soft coo from the baby... followed by Kylie's gentle, utterly smitten voice.

"Who's Father's little princess?”

On the other side of the city, the Sterling mansion had become a house of mourning.

Olga Sterling sat silently beside her daughter-in-law, Paris Sterling. After crying until she had no tears left, Paris had finally fallen asleep, still clutching the tiny pink blanket that belonged to her daughter.

Darren Sterling stood by the window, his hands gripping the case file of his missing granddaughter so tightly that the edges had crumpled. Beside him, his son, Christen Sterling, had finally broken down, unable to bear the weight of his wife's pain or his daughter's disappearance.

The four brothers who had waited their entire lives for a little sister sat together in complete silence.

William, the eldest, stared blankly at the floor.

Allen kept wiping away tears that refused to stop.

Brandon hugged the stuffed toy he had bought for his sister before she was born.

Little Ryan didn't fully understand what had happened. He only knew that everyone kept crying, so he cried too.

In another room, Cameron, Darren's eldest son, attended an online business meeting with a composed face, while his trembling hand clutched the only photo album of his niece beneath the table.

His wife, Amyra, stood in the kitchen. The milk bottle she had prepared for the baby remained untouched as tears silently rolled down her cheeks.

Carson, the second son, spent every waking hour speaking with the police, investigators, and anyone who might have seen the child. Beside him, his wife, Jeane, held his hand tightly, silently lending him the strength he no longer possessed.

Darren looked around at the family he had spent decades building.

Each of them was breaking.

Each of them was drowning.

He wanted nothing more than to collapse beside them.

But he couldn't.

If the head of the family fell...

There would be no one left to keep the rest from being consumed by grief.

Chapter 3

Around midnight, a tiny cry echoed through the room.

Kylie woke instantly.

His daughter was crying.

He gently lifted her into his arms, his heart racing as he tried to figure out what was wrong.

He checked her diaper.

Dry.

He warmed a bottle of milk and carefully held it to her lips.

The baby frowned, pushed it away with surprising determination, and let out an even louder cry.

"What is it, little one?" Kylie whispered helplessly.

Unsure of what else to do, he began pacing the room with her in his arms.

Without realizing it, he stepped out onto the balcony.

The cool night breeze brushed against them.

Almost immediately, the crying stopped.

The little girl blinked up at the moonlit sky, her tiny fingers wiggling in the air. A soft coo escaped her lips, followed by the sweetest smile Kylie had ever seen.

For a moment, time stood still.

His exhaustion vanished.

His sleepless night no longer mattered.

All he could see was the tiny life resting peacefully against his chest.

A smile found its way onto his face.

It was small.

It was gentle.

And it carried a warmth he hadn't felt in years.

Perhaps...

He was already in love with his daughter.

As Kylie turned to walk back inside, the baby scrunched up her tiny face, her lips quivering as if she were about to cry again.

He stopped immediately.

"Oh? Is that a warning?" he chuckled softly. "One more step and I'll have to face Her Highness's wrath?"

The little girl answered with an excited coo.

Kylie laughed helplessly.

"I suppose I'll have to get used to fulfilling all your wishes, Princess."

He gently brushed a finger across her tiny cheek.

"But not tonight, my lady. It's getting too cold."

The baby only wiggled happily in his arms, as though insisting,

"I'm fine, Dadda."

Kylie looked up at the stars, his smile slowly fading into something softer.

"Jennifer..."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"You asked me to keep living."

"I thought it would be impossible without you."

He looked down at the sleeping baby in his arms.

"But now... I think I can."

"Maybe not perfectly."

"Maybe not without missing you every single day."

"But... just enough."

He closed his eyes for a moment.

"Keep watching over us."

"Bless our son..."

"And bless our little daughter a little more."

As he spoke, he felt something warm against his chest.

Looking down, he saw the baby had fallen asleep with one tiny hand resting directly over his heart.

A smile tugged at his lips.

"So..."

"You're already claiming your territory, are you?"

He kissed her forehead.

"Don't worry, little one."

"This heart is yours."

"...Though I hope you won't mind sharing a little space with your mother."

"And perhaps... a tiny corner for your brother."

Still holding her close, Kylie walked back to his room.

The expensive cradle stood ready beside the bed.

He looked at it.

Then at the sleeping baby.

"...Maybe tomorrow."

Instead, he lay down carefully, placing her beside him, one protective arm around her.

For just one more night...

He wanted to feel the warmth of his daughter.

And for the first time in two long years...

He fell asleep with peace in his heart.

The morning sun had barely risen when the silence of the Sterling mansion was shattered by the ringing of a phone.

Darren Sterling answered immediately.

"Hello?"

"Mr. Sterling?" the voice on the other end said. "We've found a lead regarding your missing granddaughter."

Darren's heart lurched.

"Are... are you telling me the truth?"

"Yes, sir."

His legs nearly gave way.

"Oh, thank God..."

He closed his eyes, relief washing over him.

"Tell me. Where is she? Is she safe?"

There was a long pause.

"Sir... I must warn you. This may not be the news you were hoping for."

Darren's grip on the phone tightened.

"What do you mean?"

"Our investigation suggests that the kidnappers intended to sell your granddaughter into slavery. However, before they could carry out their plan, they were attacked and forced to flee."

Darren felt the blood drain from his face.

"One of the kidnappers escaped into an area the locals call the Forest of the Dead."

Another painful silence followed.

"We recovered his body this morning."

"It... was not in a condition that suggested anyone could have survived alongside him."

Darren could barely breathe.

"And..."

The officer hesitated.

"We also found a yellow baby blanket."

"It was soaked in blood."

"There was an embroidered 'S'... along with the Sterling family crest."

For a moment...

Time stopped.

The phone slipped from Darren's trembling hand.

The sound of it hitting the floor echoed through the silent mansion.

Christen, who had been standing nearby, rushed forward.

"Father...?"

Darren's lips trembled, but no words came.

Christen picked up the phone with shaking hands and listened to the officer's final words.

"The evidence suggests that your granddaughter did not survive."

Christen stood frozen.

His mind refused to accept what he had just heard.

"The... Forest of the Dead..."

His voice cracked.

"My daughter..."

The words barely escaped his lips before he collapsed to his knees, the weight of despair finally breaking what little hope he had left.
