The Ghost’S Consort

Episode 1: The 10 Days Decree

The incense in the Ancestral Hall had not stopped burning in two years.

It smelled like funeral smoke and old blood. Like the day they brought King Li Zheng’s body back in pieces.

Crown Princess Li Zhanyi stood in the center of the hall and did not bow.

She was in black battle leather. Not the silk robes her sisters wore. Not the crown she was supposed to inherit. Her lightning sword was strapped across her back. Her hands were scarred. At 20, she had commanded the border for two years while the Council argued in this hall.

In front of her, Elder Mo slammed his staff on the stone. The sound echoed.

_“Ten days,”_ he said. His voice was dry. Final. _“You have ten days, Crown Princess Li Zhanyi. Find a king. Present him to the Council. Or the Li Kingdom is declared unfit to rule and the throne is dissolved.”_

Silence.

Behind Zhanyi, her sisters moved. *Li Nan*, the elder twin. Soft eyes, diplomat’s mouth. The one the Council wanted on the throne. She looked like she was about to cry. *Li Mei*, the older twin. Healer’s hands. She was gripping Nan’s sleeve.

To Zhanyi’s right stood the only two people in this kingdom who did not flinch when she spoke.

_Li Haku._ Her assistant. 22. Ink on his fingers and maps in his head. He’d been with her since she was 14, when she first picked up a sword and the other servants called her unladylike. He never called her that.

_Lu Mian._ Female general. 20. Scar across her jaw from the day she threw herself between Zhanyi and an assassin at 16. She stood like a wall. No bow. No fear.

_“No ruler may sit the Li throne unless she presents a king,”_ Elder Mo continued. _“It is ancient law. A man capable enough to hold the border. The kingdom will not follow a woman alone. Not after what happened to your father.”_

The word _father_ hit like a blade.

Zhanyi’s jaw tightened. Two years ago, the Eastern Domain had butchered him and sent his head back in a box. The Council called it ‘a tragedy.’ Zhanyi called it war.

*Nan* stepped forward. _“Elder. The people love Zhanyi. She pushed back the border raiders last winter with half the troops you gave her. She deserves—”_

_“The people love peace!”_ Elder Mo cut her off. _“And peace comes from a king. From strength. From a man. Not a girl who brings us more war.”_

Haku’s hand twitched toward his brush. Mian’s hand went to her sword.

Zhanyi lifted one finger. _Stand down._

_“Where am I supposed to find a king in ten days?”_ she asked. Her voice was quiet. That was worse than yelling. _“The neighboring kingdoms won’t send one. They’re waiting for the Li Kingdom to fall so they can carve it up. The only men who would take me are men like Lord Chen. And I’d rather burn.”_

_“That is not the Council’s concern, Your Highness,”_ Elder Mo said. _“The law is the law. Find a king. Or watch your father’s kingdom become pieces by spring.”_

Dismissed.

The hall doors closed behind them with a sound like a tomb.

In the courtyard, the cold hit them. Mian kicked the war table so hard the maps jumped.

_“Ten days is impossible,”_ she spat. _“This is a trap. They want *Nan* on the throne. Soft. Married to Chen’s son by next month. Controllable.”_

_“Then we don’t give them Nan,”_ Haku said. He was already unrolling a map of the northern mountains. His eyes were sharp. _“Your Highness. There is one option.”_

Zhanyi looked at him. _“Say it.”_

_“The Graveyard Pass,”_ Haku said. _“No one goes there. The mist hasn’t lifted in ten years. Not since Zhang Wei of the Eastern Domain died there.”_

Zhanyi went still. _“The Ghost King.”_

_“Murdered by his own brother,”_ Haku nodded. _“Age 19. They say he still sits a throne of bone and frost. If any man wouldn’t fear the Crown Princess of Li... it’s a dead one.”_

Mian stared. _“You’re telling her to marry a ghost.”_

_“I’m telling her to survive,”_ Haku said quietly.

Zhanyi looked at the mountains in the distance. Grey and endless. Ten days.

She looked at her two people. Haku, who would follow her into hell and take notes. Mian, who would burn hell down for her.

_“Ten days to find him,”_ Zhanyi said. _“Haku, you’re with me. Mian, hold the border. If I don’t come back with a king, prepare for war.”_

She paused.

_“And if I do come back with one?”_

Mian grinned, sharp and bloody. _“Then we make the Council regret every word they said today.”_

_“This marriage won’t end in 10 days,”_ Zhanyi said. _“It ends when we have our revenge. When no one in this kingdom can call me ‘just a girl’ and live.”_

Haku bowed. _“When do we leave, Your Highness?”_

_“Now,”_ Zhanyi said. _“Before I change my mind. Before they send Chen’s men to arrest me.”_

Behind them, the Ancestral Hall doors stayed closed.

Ahead of them, the mountains waited. And in them, a dead king.

_Day 1 of 10. The countdown has begun._

Episode 2: 4 Days To Find A King

The Li border was gone by nightfall of Day 1.

By Day 2, the trees turned to stone. By Day 3, the air tasted like iron.

Now it was Day 4. The Graveyard Pass.

Zhanyi rode in front. Black cloak, lightning sword on her back. Haku rode to her left with maps, compass, and a scroll case tied to his saddle. Behind them, two royal guards who hadn’t complained once.

And between Zhanyi and Haku, riding close enough to cover her flank, was *Li Mian*.

She should’ve been at the capital holding the border. She wasn’t.

_“You disobeyed orders,”_ Zhanyi said without looking back.

_“You’d be dead by Day 2 without me,”_ Mian answered. She had her helmet off. The scar on her jaw was white in the cold. _“Besides. Someone has to make sure my assistant doesn’t get us killed.”_

Haku didn’t look up from the compass. But the corner of his mouth moved. _“I’m recording our deaths in real time. It’s called documentation, General.”_

_“I call it annoying,”_ Mian said. Then, softer: _“You good, Haku?”_

_“Cold,”_ he said. _“But good.”_

Zhanyi allowed herself one second to watch them. Ten years. That’s how long Haku and Mian had orbited each other. Bickering. Covering. Mian saving Haku from a blade in Year 3. Haku staying up three nights to stitch Mian’s shoulder in Year 5. Neither of them had said it out loud. They didn’t need to.

_“Focus,”_ Zhanyi said. _“We’re here.”_

The mist rolled down the peaks like water. It killed their torches in one breath. The temperature dropped until breath turned to knives.

_“Dismount,”_ Zhanyi ordered. _“We walk.”_

The mist parted.

A valley. No trees. No sound. Just snow and bone-white stone. And in the center, a throne. Carved from ribs and frost.

On it sat a man.

Black armor. Black hair tied with ice. Skin pale as death. A crown of frost sat crooked on his head. His eyes were grey. Winter grey. He wasn’t breathing. But he was watching.

_Zhang Wei._

Ghost King of the Eastern Domain. Murdered by his brother at 19. Ten years dead.

The two guards dropped to their knees. Haku bowed low, precise. Mian stepped half in front of Zhanyi, hand on her sword.

_“Zhang Wei of the Eastern Domain,”_ Haku said. Voice steady. _“This is Crown Princess Li Zhanyi of Li Kingdom.”_

Zhanyi did not kneel.

She walked through the snow until she was ten feet from the throne.

_“I didn’t cross a graveyard to kneel to a ghost,”_ she said. _“I came to make a deal.”_

Zhang Wei tilted his head. Frost cracked off his crown and fell.

_“A deal,”_ he said. His voice came from under a lake. _“With a dead man.”_

_“With a king,”_ Zhanyi corrected. _“The Li Kingdom requires a king to sit the throne in ten days. I need your name. Your strength. In return, I give you what no living person can.”_

_“And what is that, Princess?”_

_“Revenge.”_

The word hung in the mist.

_“Your brother took your throne and your life,”_ Zhanyi said. _“My Council took my right and called me ‘just a girl.’ We are both problems they think will disappear.”_

Zhang Wei stood. He did not walk. One moment on the throne. The next, in front of her. The air turned to glass. Cold poured off him in waves.

He reached out and touched the hilt of her lightning sword. Sparks jumped and died.

_“You do not fear me.”_

_“I’ve buried men,”_ Zhanyi said. _“Fear is a luxury I lost two years ago.”_

Behind her, Mian shifted. Haku’s hand went to the dagger in his sleeve.

Zhang Wei smiled. Not warm. Like a blade.

_“Say yes, and I am yours, Crown Princess. Say no, and this mist will keep your bones with the rest.”_

Zhanyi did not blink. _“Yes.”_

The world broke.

Bells rang with no rope. The bone throne split down the middle with a crack that shook the valley. The mist exploded outward in a ring and tore trees from the ground.

From the ridge above: shouts. Steel. Torches.

Zhang Wei’s brother’s soldiers. They had followed them through the pass.

_“Incoming,”_ Mian said. She was already between Zhanyi and the ridge. _“Haku, cover the left.”_

_“On it,”_ Haku said. He pulled two short blades from his sleeves. The scholar was gone.

Zhang Wei lifted two fingers. The mist around them sharpened and shot upward like spears. Screams followed.

He turned to Zhanyi. _“Let’s see if the Crown Princess of Li can keep up.”_

Zhanyi drew her sword. Lightning lit the snow white.

_“Watch me.”_

Mian and Haku fell into formation on either side of her without speaking. Ten years of fighting together.

Day 4 of 10. King found.

Now they just had to survive him.

Episode 3: A Paper wedding

The mist was still falling from the sky like broken glass.

Zhang Wei’s brother’s soldiers lay scattered across the snow. Some were frozen mid-step. Some were running and didn’t look back. None were getting up.

Zhanyi lowered her lightning sword. The blue light bled out of the blade. Her breathing was steady. Behind her, Haku was already moving through the dead, checking for orders, for seals, for anything that would tell them who sent them.

Mian stood at Zhanyi’s shoulder, blood on her knuckles but not a scratch on her.

_“Clear,”_ Mian said.

_“Three riders got away,”_ Haku added. _“East. They’ll reach the capital before us.”_

Zhanyi nodded once. That was fine. Let them talk.

In the middle of the field, Zhang Wei hadn’t moved. Frost spread from his boots and killed the grass under the snow. He turned to Zhanyi. The crooked ice crown was gone. Melted in the fight. His grey eyes looked at her like she was a puzzle he’d waited ten years to solve.

_“You fight like someone who’s already buried,”_ he said.

_“I fight like someone with no one left to bury me,”_ Zhanyi answered.

A ghost of a smile.

He held out his hand. In his palm, ice formed and spun. It split into two rings. One settled on his finger. The other floated to Zhanyi and hovered in front of her face.

_“Paper won’t hold a dead king to a living throne,”_ Zhang Wei said. _“Blood will. Ghost law.”_

Haku stepped forward fast. _“Your Highness, wait. Ghost marriages require a blood oath. If you break it before the terms are met, it—”_

_“I know,”_ Zhanyi cut him off. _“What are the terms?”_

Haku swallowed. _“Until revenge is taken. Until the throne is unquestioned. Until the one who broke the marriage dies.”_

Mian looked at Zhanyi. No words. Just: _your call, General._

Zhanyi took the ring of ice. It didn’t burn. It felt like armor. She slid it on. Then she drew her dagger and cut her palm. Red blood welled, bright against the snow.

Zhang Wei did the same. Black blood. It smoked in the cold.

They pressed their hands together.

The world went quiet. No wind. No birds. Even the mist stopped.

A contract of black parchment appeared between them, floating. Gold words burned across it.

*MARRIAGE OF THE CROWN PRINCESS LI ZHANYI AND THE GHOST KING ZHANG WEI*

*BOUND UNTIL REVENGE IS TAKEN. BOUND UNTIL THE THRONE IS UNQUESTIONED.*

The parchment folded itself once and sank into Zhanyi’s chest. Cold spread through her veins, then settled warm behind her ribs.

Zhang Wei looked at her. Really looked.

_“You didn’t hesitate.”_

_“I don’t have ten days to hesitate,”_ Zhanyi said. _“Elder Mo gave me 10 days to _find_ a king. I found one. Now I need you to help me keep a kingdom.”_

_“And revenge?”_

_“For my father. For your brother. For every person who thinks a woman can’t rule,”_ she said. _“Until then, this marriage stands.”_

Zhang Wei inclined his head. The first bow he’d given anyone in ten years.

_“Then I am yours, wife. Until the end.”_

_“Until the end,”_ Zhanyi echoed.

Behind them, Mian exhaled. Haku was already writing it all down, hand shaking a little.

Mian nudged him with her elbow. _“You okay, scholar?”_

_“I just watched my princess marry a ghost to save a kingdom,”_ Haku said. _“I’m documenting treason. And yes.”_

_“Good,”_ Mian said. Then, quieter, only for him: _“Because I’m not doing this without you.”_

Haku didn’t answer. But his hand brushed hers when he passed her a cloth to clean her knuckles.

An hour later, a hawk dropped from the sky. Mian caught it. The note was short. Urgent.

_GATES CLOSED. LORD CHEN FLEW HIS BANNER OVER THE PALACE. ANNOUNCED BETROTHAL TO LI NAN. COMING HOME WITH A GHOST? BETTER BE A KING._

Zhanyi burned the note in her palm. Lightning sparked and turned it to ash.

_“Chen moved fast,”_ Haku said. _“We have 5 days left to prove Zhang Wei can hold the border, or the Council dissolves the marriage and puts Nan on the throne.”_

_“Then we don’t give them 5 days,”_ Zhanyi said. _“We give them a king tomorrow.”_

That night they didn’t sleep.

Zhanyi sat on a rock, sharpening her sword. Zhang Wei stood on another, watching the tree line. Between them, the marriage contract hummed under her skin like a second heartbeat.

_“Do you regret it?”_ Zhang Wei asked.

Zhanyi looked up at him. Dead grey eyes, living war.

_“No,”_ she said. _“Do you?”_

_“No,”_ he said. _“I’ve been dead ten years. This is the first thing that’s felt alive.”_

Dawn broke over the mountains. Cold and gold.

Day 5 of 10.

A king was found. A marriage was sealed.

Now they had to go home and make the kingdom kneel.

Mian mounted up beside Haku. _“Try not to die, scholar.”_

_“Try not to punch a ghost, General,”_ Haku said.

Mian grinned. _“No promises.”_

They rode.
