UNTAMED THRONE

Chapter 1 – The Last Peaceful Night (Part 1)

Rain had always fascinated nine-year-old Fiorella Romano.

She stood on the wide balcony of the Romano estate, tiny fingers resting against the cool marble railing as raindrops danced across the gardens below. The sprawling estate stretched beyond what her young eyes could measure—rows of ancient cypress trees, neatly trimmed hedges, marble fountains, and white roses her mother cared for every morning.

To everyone else, the Romano estate represented power, influence, and wealth.

To Fiorella...

It was simply home.

"Fiorella!"

Her father's familiar voice echoed from inside the mansion.

She spun around immediately, her long chestnut hair swaying behind her before she hurried through the open balcony doors.

"I'm coming!"

The marble corridors carried the sound of her laughter as she ran toward the library.

The room smelled of old books, polished wood, and freshly brewed coffee.

Her father sat beside the fireplace, reading through a stack of papers. Though people outside the estate knew him as a respected businessman whose calm presence commanded every room, Fiorella knew another side of him.

To her...

He was simply Daddy.

"You called me?"

He looked up over the edge of the papers before setting them aside.

"I've been waiting five whole minutes."

She gasped dramatically.

"Five minutes?"

He nodded.

"I was beginning to think someone forgot our chess match."

She placed both hands on her hips.

"I didn't forget."

"Oh?"

"I was studying the rain."

"And did the rain teach you how to beat me?"

She smiled confidently.

"It said you're definitely losing today."

A deep laugh escaped him.

"So confident."

He opened the wooden chessboard waiting between them.

"Take your seat then."

Fiorella climbed onto the chair opposite him, her feet barely reaching the floor.

"I'll be white."

"You always choose white."

"Because Mommy says white means hope."

Her father smiled.

"Your mother always has beautiful answers."

Before either of them could make the first move, soft footsteps approached.

A graceful woman appeared at the doorway carrying a tray of warm cookies.

"You two started without me?"

Fiorella's eyes sparkled.

"Mommy!"

She rushed into her mother's embrace.

The woman laughed as she kissed the top of her daughter's head.

"You'll catch a cold running around barefoot."

"But Daddy said we'd play."

Her father raised both hands.

"I said no such thing."

"You did."

"I don't remember."

"You have old memory."

"Oh?"

He pretended to look offended.

"I'm already old now?"

Her mother couldn't hold back her laughter.

"You walked right into that one."

Fiorella giggled.

"I win."

Her father sighed dramatically.

"I haven't even played my first chess move, and somehow I've already lost."

The room filled with warm laughter.

Moments like these were ordinary inside the Romano household.

There were no expensive gifts.

No discussions of wealth.

Only shared smiles, playful teasing, and quiet evenings together.

For Fiorella, that was enough.

Her mother poured tea while Fiorella stole another cookie.

"I saw that."

"No, you didn't."

"You have crumbs on your nose."

Fiorella quickly rubbed her face.

Her parents exchanged amused glances.

"My clever little detective," her mother teased.

"I'm not a detective."

"No?"

"I'm going to be stronger than Daddy."

Her father placed a hand over his heart.

"I've officially been replaced."

"You'll still get hugs."

"Well, that's something."

Dinner was served just after sunset.

The long dining table, capable of seating dozens of guests during celebrations, felt comfortably intimate with only the three of them gathered together.

Candles flickered gently as rain tapped against the tall windows.

"So," her mother asked, "what masterpiece did you create today?"

Fiorella immediately brightened.

"I painted our family."

"Oh?"

She nodded enthusiastically.

"Mommy has flowers."

Her mother smiled.

"That sounds lovely."

"Daddy has a serious face."

Her father frowned playfully.

"A serious face?"

"Yes."

"And what about you?"

"I drew myself smiling."

Her mother leaned closer.

"Why are you smiling?"

"Because I'm with both of you."

Silence settled around the table.

Not an uncomfortable silence.

A grateful one.

Her father reached across the table and gently squeezed her hand.

"You've already painted the most beautiful picture."

After dinner, the three wandered into the music room.

Her mother sat before the grand piano while Fiorella climbed onto the bench beside her.

"Teach me."

"Again?"

"I'll get it right this time."

Patiently, her mother guided her fingers over the keys.

One note.

Then another.

Some sounded beautiful.

Others made Fiorella wrinkle her nose.

Her father applauded every attempt anyway.

"Perfect."

"It wasn't perfect."

"It was perfect because you didn't give up."

She smiled shyly.

Outside, thunder rolled across the sky.

Far away.

Barely noticeable.

One of the household staff quietly entered the room.

"Sir..."

Her father turned.

The servant leaned close and whispered something.

It lasted only a few seconds.

When the servant stepped away, everything looked the same.

Yet somehow...

Everything had changed.

His smile had become smaller.

His eyes sharper.

Her mother noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

He offered a reassuring smile.

"Probably a misunderstanding."

She studied him for a long moment.

"You've never called something 'probably' before."

He gently brushed her hand.

"I'll check on it."

He stood, adjusting his jacket before looking at Fiorella.

"I'll be back before bedtime."

She crossed her arms.

"You still owe me a rematch."

"I remember."

"You promise?"

He walked over and knelt until they were eye level.

"I always keep my promises."

He tapped the tip of her nose.

"So you stay with Mommy."

She nodded.

"I'll wait."

As he walked toward the doorway, he glanced back one final time.

His wife.

His daughter.

The two people he loved more than anything.

For just a heartbeat, he seemed to memorize the scene.

Then he disappeared into the hallway.

Fiorella didn't notice the change in the atmosphere.

She simply believed her father would return in a few minutes, just as he always had.

She had no idea that the peaceful evening she wanted to hold onto forever was already beginning to slip away.

THE MAN WHO STOOD BETWEEN HER AND THE STORM

The rain had always been Fiorella Romano’s favorite thing.

Before tonight, she loved the sound of raindrops falling over the marble balconies of the Romano estate. She loved watching the gardens come alive after a storm, the roses shining with tiny drops of water, and the old fountains singing beneath the grey sky.

Rain had always felt peaceful.

But tonight, it felt different.

Tonight, it carried the sound of fear.

Nine-year-old Fiorella sat quietly inside the black car moving away from the Romano estate. Her small fingers were wrapped tightly around the edge of the coat covering her shoulders. The coat was too large for her, carrying the faint scent of the man sitting beside her.

Uncle Matteo.

The man everyone feared.

The man whose name could silence an entire room.

The man who had walked into the chaos when everyone else had stepped back.

Fiorella stared out of the window, watching the estate disappear into the darkness.

The tall gates.

The white roses.

The place she had called home.

She didn't know if she would ever look at it the same way again.

Matteo noticed the silence beside him.

Usually, people became nervous when they sat near him. Powerful businessmen, enemies, even those who worked for him carefully measured every word before speaking.

But this little girl...

She wasn't afraid of his reputation.

She was simply hurt.

"Fiorella."

His deep voice broke the silence.

The girl didn't turn.

"Are you injured?"

A small shake of her head.

"No."

"Are you sure?"

Another pause.

Then a whisper.

"Why did you come?"

Matteo looked at her.

The question was simple, but he understood what she meant.

Why him?

Why was he the one who appeared when everything fell apart?

For a moment, the man known for never showing emotions remained silent.

Because the truth was complicated.

He had seen many people fight for power.

He had watched families destroy each other for wealth and control.

But he had never expected to see a child become a victim of those battles.

"You called my name," he finally answered.

Fiorella looked confused.

"I didn't."

Matteo's expression softened slightly.

"No. But someone did."

The little girl lowered her eyes.

She didn't understand the world of secrets and betrayal surrounding her.

She only knew one thing.

She was scared.

The car continued through the empty road until they reached Matteo's private residence.

Unlike the Romano estate, this place was quiet. There were no endless rooms, no servants rushing around, no people pretending everything was perfect.

Just peace.

When the car stopped, Matteo stepped out first.

Then he opened the door for Fiorella.

She hesitated.

"Am I staying here?"

"Yes."

"Forever?"

The question surprised him.

"No."

Her eyes dropped.

"Because nobody wants me?"

For the first time in years, Matteo felt anger that wasn't directed at an enemy.

It was directed at the people who had made a child feel unwanted.

He knelt down so he was at her level.

"Listen to me, Fiorella."

She looked at him.

"You are not a burden. You are not something people can throw away when things become difficult."

His voice became firm.

"You are a Romano."

The girl remained silent.

"But more importantly..." Matteo continued, "you are Fiorella. And that is enough."

Those words stayed with her.

Because nobody had said that before.

Everyone talked about her family name.

Her future.

Her responsibilities.

But Matteo was the first person who saw the little girl behind the Romano legacy.

Inside the house, a woman prepared warm food for her. A room had already been arranged.

A beautiful room.

But Fiorella didn't move.

She stood near the doorway, looking uncertain.

Matteo noticed.

"You don't like it?"

She shook her head.

"It's beautiful."

"Then?"

She held her small hands together.

"Can you leave the light on?"

The request was so quiet that almost nobody would have heard it.

But Matteo did.

He turned away for a moment, hiding the emotion in his eyes.

The world knew Matteo as a man without weakness.

But that night, a frightened little girl found the one weakness he never knew existed.

His heart.

"I will."

That night, Fiorella slept without nightmares for the first time in days.

And outside her room, Matteo stayed awake.

Not because he had work.

Not because he was planning his next move.

But because he had made a promise.

A promise to protect a child who had lost her sense of safety.

The next morning, the world woke up to rumors.

The Romano heiress had disappeared.

Powerful people searched.

Questions were asked.

Enemies watched.

But nobody knew where Fiorella was.

Nobody knew that she was safe.

Nobody knew that the little girl who had been surrounded by danger was now under the protection of the most dangerous man in the city.

Matteo knew the storm was not over.

The people who wanted control over the Romano empire would come looking.

They would try to use Fiorella.

They would try to break her.

But they didn't understand something.

They thought they had found a helpless child.

They were wrong.

Because one day, that same little girl would return.

Not as someone waiting to be saved.

But as someone powerful enough to save herself.

The world would bow before the Romano heiress.

The throne would be hers.

And everyone would remember the first person who believed in her.

The man who stood between her and the storm.

Uncle Matteo.

He always stayed behind me.Like a father .

I saw concern and care in his eyes.

In this world after my parents he is the one on whom I can put my trust. That trust came from his love towards me.

I felt somewhere lucky to have him as my uncle.

Someone whom I can call my own.

He is the only reason i survived that day.

He took me out from there and gave me everything i have today.

THE NAME SHE WOULD CARRY

The black car moved silently through the empty streets as Matteo watched the little girl sleeping against the window. Fiorella Romano had fallen asleep moments after leaving the estate, exhaustion finally overcoming the fear she had carried all night.

For years, Matteo had believed that emotions were weaknesses. In his world, kindness could be used against you, trust could become a weapon, and love could become the easiest way to destroy someone.

But then came Fiorella.

A nine year old girl with frightened eyes and a heart that was still trying to understand why the people around her had failed to protect her.

When the car reached Matteo's house, he ordered the guards to remain silent. He did not want the little girl to wake up surrounded by unfamiliar faces.

The house was not like the Romano mansion. It was large, elegant, and protected, but it did not feel cold. It carried a sense of calmness that Fiorella desperately needed.

Matteo carefully opened the car door.

"Fiorella," he called softly.

Her eyes opened slowly.

"Are we here?"

"Yes."

She looked at the huge building in front of her. "Your house?"

Matteo nodded.

She hesitated before stepping out.

"Will people know I am here?"

The question made him pause.

She was only nine, yet she already understood that danger followed her name.

"Not if we are careful," he answered.

Inside the house, Fiorella noticed everything. The quiet halls, the simple decorations, and the absence of people constantly watching her.

A room was prepared for her with a comfortable bed, books, toys, and a window facing a small garden.

She looked around but did not smile.

Matteo noticed.

"You don't like it?"

"I do."

"Then why do you look sad?"

Fiorella touched the edge of the blanket.

"Because this doesn't feel like mine."

Matteo understood.

A child did not need expensive things. She needed a place where she belonged.

"You can make it yours," he said.

She looked at him.

"Really?"

"Really."

That night, Matteo stayed awake in his office. Documents were spread across his desk, reports about the Romano family, enemies, and the people who had created the situation that forced Fiorella to leave her home.

There was one problem.

Everyone knew the Romano heiress existed.

As long as Fiorella Romano remained visible, she would always be a target.

The next morning, Matteo called her to his office.

Fiorella entered slowly, holding a small teddy bear she had found in her room.

"Sit down," Matteo said gently.

She climbed onto the chair opposite him.

For a moment, Matteo searched for the right words.

"Fiorella, I need to talk to you about something important."

Her expression became serious.

"Am I going back?"

"No."

The answer came quickly.

"Then what?"

Matteo leaned forward.

"Your name is dangerous."

She looked confused.

"My name?"

"Yes. The Romano name carries power. It also carries enemies."

Fiorella looked down.

"Because I am a Romano?"

"Because people want what belongs to the Romano family."

Silence filled the room.

Then she whispered, "Do I have to stop being Fiorella?"

The question caught him off guard.

"No."

His voice was firm.

"You will always be Fiorella."

"Then what changes?"

"Your identity."

She listened carefully.

"Only for protection," Matteo explained. "A new name. A new story. A way for people to believe you are someone else until you are strong enough to face the world."

Fiorella held her teddy bear tighter.

"Will I forget my family?"

"No."

"Will I forget who I am?"

"Never."

Matteo looked directly into her eyes.

"Changing your identity does not mean losing yourself. It means protecting yourself."

The little girl remained quiet.

She was trying to understand something no child should have to understand.

That sometimes survival required hiding.

"Will you know my real name?"

A small smile appeared on Matteo's face.

"I could never forget it."

"Will you still call me Fiorella?"

"Always."

The answer seemed to comfort her.

After a long silence, she asked, "What name will I have?"

Matteo placed a file on the table.

Inside were documents prepared for her safety.

A different surname.

A different background.

A different life.

But one thing would remain unchanged.

Her spirit.

"You will be known as Fiorella Moretti."

She repeated it quietly.

"Fiorella Moretti."

"Yes."

She looked at him.

"Does it sound like me?"

Matteo almost smiled.

"More than you know."

The following days were difficult.

Fiorella had to learn details about her new identity. She had to understand what she could say, what questions she needed to avoid, and why she could not reveal the truth to strangers.

But Matteo never rushed her.

He taught her patiently.

He taught her how to stay calm.

How to observe people.

How to recognize lies.

How to protect herself.

Not because he wanted her to become cold.

Because he knew the world could be cruel.

One evening, Fiorella stood in the garden watching the sunset.

"Uncle Matteo?"

"Yes?"

"Are you also hiding?"

He looked surprised.

"Why would you think that?"

"Because everyone knows you as a strong man. But I think you are hiding something too."

For the first time in a long time, Matteo had no answer.

The little girl saw what others never noticed.

Behind the powerful man was someone who had also lost things.

Someone who knew what it meant to survive.

"You are very observant," he finally said.

Fiorella smiled slightly.

"Maybe I learned from you."

That moment changed something between them.

She was no longer just a responsibility.

She was family.

And Matteo knew that protecting her would not be temporary.

The world believed the Romano heiress had disappeared.

They believed the little girl who carried the future of an empire was gone.

But they were wrong.

She was growing.

Learning.

Preparing.

Behind a different name, under the protection of the man who rescued her, Fiorella Romano was waiting.

One day, she would return.

One day, the world would know that changing her identity had not weakened her.

It had saved her.

And when she finally stood before the throne meant for her, everyone would understand one truth.

A queen can be hidden.

But a true heir can never be erased.

Years later, Fiorella would remember that conversation more than anything else. She would remember Matteo sitting across from her, explaining that names could be changed but courage could not. At that moment, she did not understand the weight of his words. She only understood that someone believed she was worth protecting.

Matteo also knew that he was not simply hiding a child from danger. He was protecting the future of an entire legacy. The little girl who arrived at his doorstep afraid of the world would slowly become the woman who challenged it.

Every lesson, every warning, and every promise became a foundation for the throne she would eventually claim. The world would never know the quiet nights she spent learning. They would only see the powerful heiress who returned without fear, unaware of the girl who once needed a light left on during storms.

Behind that strength was Matteo's promise, shaping her destiny and creating a bond no enemy could break.
