Marriage of the Di Son
Chapter 001 : Vincent
In May, as soon as late spring had passed, the weather turned unbearably hot with sudden urgency.
The scorching sun beat down on the land of Yanjing, forcing street vendors to take refuge under the shade of trees. In such sweltering heat, the young masters and misses of wealthy families were reluctant to venture out and endure the sun’s harsh rays. Only the laborers and the poor, carrying chilled rice wine soaked in well water, tirelessly shuttled between gambling dens and tea houses, hoping that the parched and weary would spend five copper coins on a bowl. With that, they could buy an extra bag of rice, cook two more pots of porridge, and survive another three days of grueling work.
At the corner of the eastern city stood a brand-new residence, its plaque hung high above the entrance. In the center, golden characters gleamed with the words “Top Imperial Scholar”—this was the mansion and imperial plaque bestowed by Emperor Hong Xiao upon the newest First-ranked Scholar, a symbol of the highest honor. For any scholar to receive such a plaque, their entire family would weep with joy and offer prayers of gratitude to their ancestors.
Outside the last room by the wall sat three people: two young maids in thin pink dresses and a plump middle-aged servant woman. On the stool before them lay a pile of red melon seeds and a pot of sour plum drink. They chatted and snacked, seeming even more at ease than their masters.
The maid on the far left glanced back at the window
maid
It’s so hot, yet the medicinal smell in this room won’t go away. It’s unbearable. Who knows when this will end?”
maid #2
Little hussy, gossiping about the master behind their back,”
maid #2
The older servant woman warned. “Be careful, or the master will have your head".
The maid in the pink dress dismissed the warning.
maid
"How could that happen? The master hasn’t visited Madam’s quarters for three months.”
maid
She lowered her voice further, “After that huge scandal, our master has shown himself to be quite loyal. If it were someone else…” She pursed her lips in disdain. “In my opinion, she should have ended it herself. At least that would have preserved some dignity. Lingering on like this just drags others down.”
maid#3
As the older servant woman was about to speak, the other maid chimed in, “Actually, Madam is quite pitiful. he’s so beautiful, talented, and kind-hearted. Who could have imagined he’d end up in such a situation…”
Though they had lowered their voices, the summer afternoon was too still, and the distance too short. Every word carried clearly to the ears of the person inside the room
On the couch, Park Vincent lay on his back, tear stains half-dried at the corners of his eyes. His recent weight loss, rather than making him appear haggard, had only accentuated his delicate beauty, lending him an achingly ethereal allure in his illness.
His beauty had always been extraordinary, worthy of the title “First Beauty of Yanjing.” On his wedding day, some idle young nobles had paid beggars to jostle his bridal sedan chair, causing his veil to fall. His flower-like beauty left onlookers on both sides of the street transfixed. Before his departure to the capital, his father, the Deputy Magistrate of Tongxiang in Xiangyang, had worried, “vinnie, you’re too beautiful. I fear Kim Mingyu won’t be able to protect you"
Kim Mingyu was his husband.
Before becoming the top imperial scholar, Kim Mingyu had been merely a poor scholar. His family lived in Yanjing, but his maternal grandmother, Old Madam Cao, resided in Xiangyang. Four years ago, when Old Madam Cao passed away, Kim Mingyu and his mother returned to Xiangyang for the funeral, where he met Park Vincent.
Tongxiang was just a small district within Xiangyang, and Park Namjoon was a minor official. Park Vincent’s mother had died in childbirth while delivering his brother,Park Yoongi. After his wife’s death, Seojoon never remarried. The household remained simple, with just the father and his two children depending on each other.
Vincent had reached marriageable age, and his beauty was extraordinary. Young masters and noble families from near and far came to propose marriage, and even Park Seojoon’s superior expressed interest in taking Vincent as a secondary wife. Park Namjoon naturally refused. Having lost his mother at a young age, Park Namjoon was especially doting toward his Son.
Moreover, as Park Vincent was well-behaved and intelligent, Park namjoon had never let him want for anything since childhood, giving him the best of everything within his means. Thus, although the Park family was merely a minor official’s household, Vincent grew up more refined and cherished than many noble young Masters and ladies.
Park Namjoon worried deeply about his marriage prospects. While noble families could offer a life of luxury, they often came with constraints and little freedom. It was for this reason that Park Namjoon favored Kim Mingyu.
Though Kim Mingyu was a commoner, he was exceptionally talented and handsome—his future success seemed inevitable. However, this meant Vincent would have to follow him to the distant capital, far from his father’s protection. There was another concern: Vincent's extraordinary beauty. While he had Seojoon’s protection in Tongxiang, the capital was teeming with nobles and princes. If any of them harbored ill intentions, Kim Mingyu might not be able to shield him.
Nevertheless, Park Vincent still married Kim Mingyu—because he loved him.
After marrying Kim Mingyu and moving to the capital, although his mother-in-law was harsh and there were many grievances, Kim Mingyu's unwavering attentiveness made those dissatisfactions gradually fade away
In early spring of the previous year, Kim Mingyu achieved the highest score in the imperial examinations. He rode on horseback through the streets in a celebratory parade, and the Emperor personally bestowed a plaque for his residence. Soon after, he was appointed as a Secretary in the Imperial Secretariat. In September, Park Vincent became pregnant, and it happened to coincide with Mother Kim’s birthday. With this double happiness, the Kim family held a grand banquet, inviting noble guests from across the capital
That day became Park Vincent’s nightmare.
he didn’t fully understand what had happened. he had only drunk a little plum wine at the banquet before feeling drowsy. In his dazed state, a maid helped him back to his room to rest… When he was jolted awake by screams, he found a strange man in his room, his clothes in disarray, and his mother-in-law and a crowd of female relatives standing at the doorway, staring at him with expressions of contempt, disgust, or malicious glee.
he should have felt utterly ashamed, and indeed, he did. But no matter how he explained, the story of the newly appointed Top Imperial Scholar’s husband committing adultery in front of a room full of guests still spread like wildfire.
he should have been divorced and driven out of the household, but Kim Mingyu didn’t do that. Overwhelmed by grief and anxiety, he suffered a miscarriage. While lying in bed, he learned that Park Yoongi had rushed to Yanjing because of the scandal, but before he could reach the Kim residence, he was attacked by robbers at night, killed, and his body dumped in the river.
Devastated by the news, he didn’t dare to send word back to Tongxiang. Summoning his last reserves of strength, he saw Park Yoongi one final time, arranged his funeral, and then fell gravely ill. For the next three months—three long months—Kim Mingyu didn’t visit him once.
As he lay on her sickbed, his mind raced with wild thoughts. Did Kim Mingyu resent Him and refuse to see him? Was he deliberately cold-shouldering him to vent his anger? But the longer he lay there, and with the fragmented whispers he overheard from the servants, he began to piece things together. The truth, when it finally dawned on him, was even more horrifying
Park Vincent struggled to sit up from the daybed. A bowl of medicine placed beside the bed had already turned cold, emitting only a bitter fragrance. he leaned over and poured the medicine from the bowl into a pot of crabapple flowers in front of the desk. The crabapple flowers had long since withered, leaving only sparse, lifeless branches.
Park Vincent raised his head. What came into view was the hem of a garment woven with gold.
The young woman was dressed in luxurious clothing, her eyebrows slightly arched, exuding an air of haughtiness. Her gaze fell on the medicine bowl in Vincent's hand, and a look of realization flashed across her face. She smiled
unknown
"So that’s how it is.”
Park Vincent calmly set the bowl down, watching as the visitor entered the room. Two burly servant women closed the door behind her. The chattering maids and servants outside had vanished at some point, leaving only the incessant chirping of cicadas in the silent air, their restless cries as if foretelling something ominous.
Park vincent
"Princess Yongning,”
Princess Yongning smiled, and as she did, the thumb-sized South Sea pearl on her hairpin swayed, its radiant glow almost dazzling to the eye.
A single pearl from the South Sea was worth ten thousand acres of fertile farmland. The royal family always enjoyed the finest things—they lived in luxury, untouched by the hardships of the world, possessing everything that others could scarcely dream of in a lifetime. Yet, they still coveted what belonged to others, even stooping to theft and plunder.
Princess Yongning
You don’t seem surprised at all,” Princess Yongning remarked curiously. “Could it be that darling Kim has already told you?”
Darling Kim”—she spoke with such intimacy. Park Vincent felt a bitter taste rise in his throat, which he barely managed to suppress
Park vincent
he replied coolly, “I’m waiting. Waiting for him to tell me himself.”
Vincent was far from foolish. Park Namjoon had raised him to be exceptionally clever. Ever since he had fallen ill, since he discovered he was under house arrest, and since his every move was being watched, he had pieced everything together, including the circumstances of Park Yoongi’s death, and realized something was terribly wrong.
he had finally uncovered the truth by coaxing information from the servants.
Kim Mingyu had topped the imperial examinations and achieved success at a young age; his status was no longer what it once was. Though Park Vincent was both talented and beautiful, he was still just the daughter of a county deputy magistrate. Kim Mingyu had caught Princess Yongning’s eye, and perhaps they had already been secretly involved. In any case, Park Vincent had become an obstacle—one that needed to be removed to make way for this golden-branched, jade-leaved royal princess.
Vincent remembered the day of the incident, the day Mother Kim hosted the banquet. Princess Yongning had been among the guests. As he recalled the scene, he could even picture the smug smile that had played at the corner of Princess Yongning’s lips
And so the truth came to light.
Princess Yongning
“Darling Kim is soft-hearted,” Princess Yongning said, sitting down with an air of indifference and looking at him. “I’m not a cruel person either. Originally, I wanted to grant you a dignified end, but who knew you wouldn’t cooperate?” She glanced at the medicine bowl on the table and sighed. “Why must you make things so difficult?”
Park Vincent couldn’t help but laugh coldly.
Day after day, a bowl of medicine. he had long sensed something was amiss and had poured all of it into the flowerpot. They wanted him to “die of illness” so that Princess Yongning could seamlessly take his place. But he refused to comply. Park Namjoon had taught him since childhood that one must never give up on survival until the very last moment. Besides, why should he? Why should this adulterous couple, who had framed him, expect him to willingly die? he absolutely would not!
Park vincent
his voice dripped with biting sarcasm as he said, “Stealing another’s marriage, plotting the death of the rightful wife, murdering a spouse and harming his offspring—I, Vincent, have truly learned the depth of the Princess’s ‘good intentions.’
Princess Yongning’s anger flared for a moment, but within moments, she regained her composure. She stood up, walked to the table, and picked up the pot of withered crabapple flowers. The flowerpot was no larger than the palm of a hand, made of delicate white porcelain carved with intricate patterns—exquisite and charming.
Princess Yongning
Princess Yongning toyed with the flowerpot, a smile playing on her lips. “Do you know how your younger brother died?”
Park Vincent’s back stiffened instantly.
Princess Yongning
Your younger brother was quite a remarkable person, though a bit too young and impulsive,” Princess Yongning said, savoring park Vincent’s reaction. “He actually managed to uncover the truth and even gathered some evidence. He threatened to take his case directly to the Emperor, nearly implicating even me in the process.” Princess Yongning patted her chest, as if still shaken by the memory. “He was clever, though. He went straight to the Capital Magistrate in the dead of night. But what he didn’t know was that the Capital Magistrate and I are on good terms. He reported everything to me immediately.” Princess Yongning spread her hands, feigning regret. “What a pity. So young, and with such promise—his literary and martial talents were impressive. If not for this, he might have had a bright future, securing titles and honors for his descendants. What a shame.”
Park Vincent nearly ground his teeth to dust!
Park Yoongi! Park Yoongi! he had long suspected that there was something suspicious about Yoongi's death. Park Yoongi had trained in martial arts under a master in Tongxiang and had always been clever—how could he have died at the hands of bandits? But he had never imagined the truth would be like this! It seemed his brother, in his determination to seek justice for him, had uncovered the affair between Princess Yongning and Kim Mingyu. Filled with righteous indignation, he had thought he could take his case to the authorities, not realizing that officials protect their own—and that his enemies were the officials themselves
Park vincent
Shameless!” he cried. “Shameless!”
Princess Yongning
Princess Yongning’s willow-like eyebrows shot up in anger, and she sneered, “What good is your virtue now? Trapped here day after day, you probably haven’t heard the news about your father. I came especially to tell you—your father has learned of how you’ve disgraced the family, and upon hearing that your brother was killed by bandits, he died of rage!”
Park vincent
Park Vincent froze, crying out involuntarily, “Impossible!”
Princess Yongning
Impossible?” Princess Yongning laughed. “Why don’t you go ask the maids and see for yourself!”
Park Vincent's mind was in turmoil. Park Namjoon had always been indifferent to fame and fortune, serving as Tongxiang’s deputy magistrate with integrity his entire life. He was undeniably a good man—how could he have met such a tragic end? A parent forced to bury their child, only to die of grief himself. Park Vincent couldn’t bear to imagine how his father must have felt upon learning of these events.
This truly proved the old saying: those who commit murder and arson wear golden belts, while those who build bridges and repair roads lie in unmarked graves!
Princess Yongning had been speaking for a long time and seemed to grow impatient. She carelessly set the pot of crabapple flowers on the table and gestured for the two servant women to step forward.
Park vincent
Park Vincent realized what was happening and cried out, “What are you going to do?”
Princess Yongning
Princess Yongning’s smile was filled with satisfaction and triumph as she said, “You, Park Vincent, with your noble character and unmatched beauty and talent, naturally cannot bear the stain of an illicit affair. These past few months, you’ve struggled bitterly. Though Darling Kim treated you as he always did, you couldn’t forgive yourself. Taking advantage of his absence from the mansion, you hanged yourself.”
Princess Yongning
She let out a light laugh. “How about it? Does this explanation preserve your dignity?” Her expression shifted again, turning vicious as she added, “If it weren’t for Darling Kim's reputation, this princess wouldn’t be offering you such an easy way out!”
Park vincent
How dare you? How dare you!” A surge of rage welled up in Park Vincent’s heart, but before he e could act, the two servant women moved to restrain him.
Princess Yongning
This princess and Darling Kim are a perfect match, but unfortunately, there’s you. Naturally, I cannot allow you to remain. If you were the Son of a noble family, this princess might have to go to some trouble. But alas, your father is just a minor county magistrate. Among the countless prefectures and counties in Yanjing, your Park family is nothing more than weeds. In your next life, remember to choose carefully before being reborn—make sure you’re born into a wealthy and powerful family
Despair surged within Park Vincent. he had refused to give up, clinging to life and grasping at any chance to turn things around. he had not cut off his own path to survival, but he couldn’t fight against the oppression of power or overcome the divide between high and low status.
Raising his eyes, heme caught sight of a familiar figure outside the window, faintly recognizing his husband.
Park vincent
A glimmer of hope ignited in Park Vincent’s heart. he cried out, “Kim Mingyu! Kim Mingyu, what you’re doing to me defies all reason and justice! Kim Mingyu!”
The figure outside the window flickered, as if fleeing to avoid him.
Princess Yongning
Princess Yongning snapped, “What are you waiting for? Do it!”
The servant women lunged forward, and a snow-white silk tightened around her neck. The silk was as smooth as a beauty’s skin—a tribute sent annually to the palace by the Zhao family of Songjiang, each bolt worth a fortune. As Park Vincent struggled, he thought bitterly that even the instrument of his murder was something so precious.
Princess Yongning
Princess Yongning stood three feet away, coldly watching Park Vincent struggle like a dying fish. She sneered, “Remember this: even with your unparalleled beauty and talent, you are still just the daughter of a minor official. For this princess, crushing you is as easy as crushing an ant!”
During his struggle, the pot of crabapple flowers was knocked over, shattering on the ground. The soil inside gave off a bitter fragrance, and the withered branches spilled out, their painted designs now chipped and broken.
In the mortal world’s fourth month, the fragrant flowers had all fallen
Chapter 002 : Kim Taehyung
The wind rattled the windows, and a maid reached out to close them. Inside the room, a bronze ox stood on the floor, its belly filled with heavy blocks of ice.
Yanjing’s summers were hot and arrived early each year. Ice had to be transported from cellars hundreds of li away.1 Even a small piece was worth ten taels of silver, let alone a complete block as large as a stone slab. And this was not even to mention the four identical bronze oxen placed in each corner of the room.
The room was cool and refreshing. On the couch near a small table sat a beautiful woman, her chin resting lazily on one hand as she skimmed through the account books before her. Beside her was a lovely girl of seventeen or eighteen, eating sweetened yogurt with crushed ice while casually flipping through a mountain of invitation cards. Two maids stood quietly behind them, gently fanning the pair.
unknown
It’s raining so hard…” the delicate and beautiful girl murmured, staring blankly out the window.
unknown
The beautiful woman glanced at her and said, “Don’t eat too much cold food, or you won’t have any appetite for dinner when your father comes home tonight.” Then, she turned to the maid beside her and instructed, “Ruyi, take away the yogurt. This pot of tea has gone cold—bring a fresh pot of hot, fragrant tea.”
Though the girl was clearly displeased, she said nothing. Ruyi set down the fan, bent to pick up the yogurt from the table, and was about to leave when a nanny dressed in silk clothing entered from outside. Without a word of greeting, the nanny walked straight to the beautiful woman’s side, clearly bearing urgent news.
Ruyi paused briefly, then carried the yogurt and cold tea out the door. As she left, she could faintly hear the sound of voices behind her.
unknown
“…They say he’s seriously ill… After finding out about Third Miss’s engagement, he had a fierce argument with Abbess Jing’an…”
unknown
"his health is failing. he’s already so sick he can’t even get out of bed…”
unknown
The doctor says he won’t last through the summer. Should we inform Master…?”
unknown
The room fell silent for a moment. Then, the beautiful woman’s gentle voice broke the stillness, “Master has been overwhelmed with official duties lately. There’s no need to trouble him with such trivial matters. When he has a moment to spare, I’ll speak to him myself.”
unknown
Almost immediately, the young girl’s uniquely coquettish voice chimed in, “Why should we bother with him? he should know his place—how dare he overreach and try to meddle with families above his station?”
unknown
Let’s not talk about this anymore,” the woman said, shifting the subject. “I heard that the wife of the newly appointed Top Imperial Scholar passed away a few days ago. We’ll have to pay our respects tomorrow.” Her voice was filled with sympathy. “To die so young—what a tragic fate.”
Such a pitiful person, Ruyi thought to herself as she continued walking, the silver tray in her hands. She made her way to the kitchen.
The woman in the room was Madam Ji suran the second wife of Grand Chancellor Kim Jun sang. The young girl was the Grand Chancellor’s daughter, Ji Suran’s biological child, the Kim family’s Third Miss, Kim yoona
As for the person they said “won’t last through the summer,” it must be the Kim family’s Second Master, Kim Taehyung
Five years ago, Second Master Kim Taehyung was sent to a temple to learn discipline after making a mistake. Over the past five years, it seemed as though the Kim family had all but forgotten his existence. Now, Ji Suran was the one managing the household, and Kim Yoona was the only remaining legitimate daughter/Ore of the Jiang family. The legitimate Ore of the Grand Chancellor’s first wife was now on the brink of not surviving the summer, yet no one in the entire household seemed to be aware.
But even if they knew, it seemed nothing would change
Ruyi sighed inwardly, glancing at the cold tea in her hands. What could she do? The late first wife was already gone, and Second Master Kim Taehyung had such an unlikable reputation
Such was the way of the world—when people were gone, their tea grew cold.
The Helin Temple on Qingcheng Mountain was a renowned temple
Though the mountain path was rugged, the scenery was breathtaking—towering pines, majestic rocks, lush forests, and tall bamboo. It was especially famous for its abbot, Grandmaster Tong Ming, who was well-known far and wide. It was said that prayers offered at Helin Temple were particularly efficacious, which was why many people braved long and arduous journeys to visit the temple, just to burn a stick of incense.
Not far from Helin Temple stood a small nunnery. In stark contrast to the bustling stream of worshippers at Helin Temple, the nunnery appeared desolate and nearly empty
After a night of rain, the mountain wind grew even colder. In a room next to the woodshed of the nunnery, the sound of a woman’s sobbing could be heard, unceasing.
unknown
Miss… what are we going to do, Miss…”
Note : I have decided to change only pronouns for tae's character. I will use miss and wife as usual if people find it uncomfortable please tell me I will change
The moment Park Vincent opened his eyes, he was met with a cacophony of noise. He struggled to move his fingers, his body feeling as though it were weighed down by an immense burden. With another attempt, he suddenly realized it wasn’t his body that was heavy—it was the quilt covering him, thick and oppressive.
The quilt, originally thin, had grown cold and heavy from dampness, clinging to him uncomfortably. he pushed it aside, relieved as the pressure on his chest eased, and slowly sat up.
unknown
The sound of crying nearby came to an abrupt halt. In the dim glow of the candlelight on the table, a face filled with unmistakable joy came into view. “Miss, you’re awake!” the girl exclaimed.
Park Vincent was taken aback. he studied the girl before him. No older than fifteen or sixteen, the girl’s eyes were swollen like peach pits, her face sweet but gaunt, her thin frame pitiful to behold. Dressed in an ill-fitting dark blue tunic with no adornments, she gazed at Park Vincent with a foolishly wide grin.
Calling him “Miss”—could this girl be a maidservant? But even the maidservants who had served him back in Tongxiang, before his marriage, hadn’t dressed so poorly.
Park Vincent jolted back to reality. No, the real issue was that he didn’t recall having a maidservant like this. After marrying and moving to Yanjing, he had four personal maidservants. Two of them had later married and left, while the other two… After the incident at the banquet, Kim Mingyu's mother had wanted to have them beaten to death as well. It was only after Park Vincent pleaded desperately that she relented, allowing them to be sent away instead. As for the servants who attended to him afterward, they were likely spies planted by Princess Yongning.
Princess Yongning! Suddenly, fragmented memories flashed before Park Vincent's eyes. He remembered now—it was Princess Yongning who had come to provoke him, and it was the princess’s servants who had strangled him to death. Could it be that he hadn’t died? How was that possible? Princess Yongning was the type to eradicate every root of trouble; she would never have let him live.
Unless… someone had saved her? Was it Kim Taehyung? Or someone else?
unknown
Park Vincent stared straight at the young maid without speaking. The girl’s silly smile faltered, replaced by a flicker of fear. Softly, she called out, “Miss? Miss?”
Tong/ Kim Taehyung's maidservant
The maid grew even more anxious. “Miss,” she said hurriedly, “this servant is Tong’er!”
Park vincent
Tong’er? Park Vincent wracked his brain but couldn’t recall anyone by that name.
Tong/ Kim Taehyung's maidservant
Miss,” Tong’er said, her voice trembling as if on the verge of tears. “Miss, this servant knows you’re heartbroken. How could Third Miss and the others steal your marriage arrangement? That was a betrothal arranged for you by the Madam while she was still alive. How could the family of Marquis Ningyuan stoop to such a treacherous and dishonorable act? And the Master—Miss, this servant knows you resent him, but you mustn’t lose all hope. If not for yourself, think of the Madam. How heartbroken she would be, watching you from the heavens, to see you like this!”
Park Vincent stared blankly at the girl as she wept and lamented, but her mind was elsewhere. What did any of this have to do with Marquis Ningyuan? She was aware of the Marquis’s heir—Lee Eunwoo, Kim Taehyung's sister and her sister-in-law, had always been infatuated with him. He was, after all, renowned throughout Yanjing for his striking looks. But what did that matter to him?
The girl continued to cry, lost in her sorrow, when suddenly a clap of thunder roared outside, its flash illuminating the room. The cold, dilapidated space, the icy quilt, and even Kim Taehyung himself were bathed in the stark light
And in that moment, Park Vincent realized what was wrong
This voice… delicate and crisp, though weary, carried the soft, sweet timbre unique to a young Ore.
Park vincent
“Who am I?” Park Vincent repeated.
Tong/ Kim Taehyung's maidservant
“What are you saying, Miss?” Tong’er, mistaking her words for lingering resentment, quickly replied, “You are the legitimate Ore son of Grand Chancellor Kim's household, the Second Miss of the Kim family.” She added emphatically, “A true noble, the Grand Chancellor’s Son!”
The Kim family. The Grand Chancellor’s Son. The Kim family’s Second Miss—Kim Taehyung.
Park Vincent closed his eyes.
He would be Kim Taehyung.
Chapter 003 : Beloved Daughter
Even having seen it so many times,Park Vincent was still unaccustomed to it.
The bronze mirror with the embroidered border had a crack in it, and the face reflected in it also had a crack. The features seemed distorted. The Ore in the mirror looked eighteen or ningteen years old, but was shockingly thin, just like his maid Tong’er.
Park Vincent remembered that when he was around that age, he definitely didn’t look so sallow and emaciated. Supposedly the son of the Grand Chancellor, but looking at him now, he probably fared worse than even the servants. This face couldn’t compare at all with his original face, which had been known as the most beautiful in Yanjing.
However, that face hadn’t led to a good end either, still resulting in the fate that often befalls beautiful women—an early death, nothing but a handful of yellow earth.
Park Vincent’s thoughts involuntarily drifted far away. he never expected that he hadn’t died, or rather, that he had died but had come back to life as Kim Taehyung, the Ore son of the current Grand Chancellor from the Kim family in Yanjing.
Kim Yun sang, as the Grand Chancellor and the Emperor’s teacher, was someone all the current civil officials looked to for direction. Kim Yun sang wasn’t arrogant in the imperial court, instead appearing moderate, acting like a peacemaker in everything. But precisely because of this, there were many who openly befriended him in court, and who knows how many more did so secretly."
Kim Yun sang’s connections spread throughout the court, and Emperor Hong Xiao also had great trust in him, yet Kim Yun sang wasn’t ostentatious. Park Seojoon had said that this seemingly moderate approach was actually a way of conducting oneself as an official. But one thing was beyond doubt: Kim Yun sang was a high-ranking official, and Kim Taehyung was therefore a Ore son from a prominent family.
It’s just that this Grand Chancellor’s son wasn’t living a good life. Kim Taehyung’s birth mother came from the Ye family of Xiangyang, a famous wealthy merchant family. The Ye family had immense wealth; with their jewelry business Hongxiang House alone having fifty-six branches throughout the Yan Dynasty. Back when Kim Yun sang wasn’t yet a Grand Chancellor, Old Master Ye took a liking to him and married his youngest daughter Ye Zhenzhen to him.
Who knew that after Ye Zhenzhen married into the family, it took three years for her to become pregnant with Kim Taehyung, and she died from illness when Kim Taehyung was a year old. Kim Yun sang then married Ji Suran, the legitimate daughter of the Vice Censor-in-chief’s family. Ji Suran gave birth to Kim Yoona in the first year after marrying into the family. When Ji Suran was pregnant with her second child, Kim Taehyung was seven years old. During a banquet, in front of all the ladies, he pushed Ji Suran down the stairs. Ji Suran miscarried, losing a son and damaging her health so severely that she could no longer conceive.
Kim Yun sang was furious, but fortunately, Ji Suran pleaded on Kim Taehyung’s behalf. Even so, Kim Taehyung was still sent to the temple to reflect on his actions.
It’s just that Kim Taehyung couldn’t escape the reputation of grievously harming his stepmother and murdering his half-brother, and when the people of Yanjing mentioned Second Miss Kim, they would only remember his vicious name.
In truth, after Ye Zhenzhen died, fearing that the stepmother would mistreat Kim Taehyung, the Ye family had sent people to take Kim Taehyung away. If Kim Taehyung had been willing, he could have gone to live with the Ye family in Xiangyang. But regardless of what the Kim family thought, Kim Taehyung himself refused, and after a long time, the Ye family stopped coming
Park Vincent also knew these gossipy stories from the capital, but he never imagined that the so-called vicious and ruthless son of the Grand Chancellor would live in such a miserable state. Meanwhile, Kim Yun sang, who had an excellent reputation in the court, and Ji huran, with her heart of a Bodhisattva, turned a deaf ear and blind eye to the dying Kim Taehyung.
Perhaps this was what they had planned.
Kim Taehyung sought his own death.
The reason was that back when Ye Zhenzhen was alive, the Kim family had a good relationship with Marquis Ningyuan. The young heir was born first, and was coincidentally a year older than Kim Taehyung. Ye Zhenzhen and the Marchioness thought it would be a good idea to arrange a betrothal, as the two families were well-matched, familiar with each other, and could look after each other in the future.
It was originally a verbal agreement. But when Marquis Ningyuan found out, he soon had the Marchioness formally write a marriage contract with the Jiang family. Although Ye Zhenzhen was somewhat hesitant, she also thought that it would be nice to be related to the Marchioness through marriage. The Marchioness was kind-hearted, and with such a mother-in-law, Kim Taehyung would surely live a peaceful life.
Later, although Ye Zhenzhen died, the marriage between the Young Marquis and Kim Taehyung still stood. Although it wasn’t publicly announced in Yanjing, both families had a marriage contract as proof.
But a few days ago, a servant who came to the nunnery to deliver rice and grain mentioned that the Young Marquis Ningyuan was engaged, and the fiancée was Kim Yoona, the Third Miss of the Kim family.
Kim Taehyung was stunned at the time.
The one engaged to Young Marquis Ningyuan was clearly Kim Taehyung, so how could it have become Kim Yoona? Kim Taehyung had a fiery temperament and wanted to return to Yanjing to demand an explanation, but he was mocked and ridiculed by the old woman who came.
Now, people in Yanjing only knew about the Third Miss Kim. Who knew who the Second Miss Kim was? Even if they did know, he was just a vicious man who grievously harmed his stepmother and younger half-brother. How could such a person be worthy of the Young Marquis? It seemed that Marquis Ningyuan’s household didn’t take Kim Taehyung seriously either, otherwise they wouldn’t have agreed to the substitution in the marriage
The old woman even mocked that if Second miss Kim made a scene and went back, he would only become a laughingstock. Even if Marquis Ningyuan’s residence were forced to marry Kim Taehyung in the end, they wouldn’t treat Kim Taehyung seriously, but would instead loathe him.
Second Miss Kim turned around and threw himself into the lake.
After being rescued, he became seriously ill, growing thinner day by day. he was already very thin to begin with, but now he was even more frail, as if he would fall over with a gust of wind. Yet even in this state of illness, no one from Yanjing came to see him.
Perhaps only after he died would someone come to collect his body.
Maybe they just wanted Kim Taehyung to wither away and die in the nunnery, letting him naturally “die of illness,” so they could control the narrative.
