Alcohol incident

The medical tent had stopped feeling like a medical tent.

At first, the new medics thought they understood what they were walking into. They had training manuals, classroom drills, and instructors who had repeated the same lessons until everyone could recite them.

But the deployment had a way of tearing apart the difference between practice and reality.

The experienced medics moved with a quiet rhythm. They didn't panic. They didn't freeze. They just worked.

The trainees were different.

They were still learning how to breathe while everything around them was chaos.

Milky stood near the entrance of the tent, watching one of the newest medics handle a situation. She was trying hard — maybe too hard. Her hands moved quickly, but her confidence hadn't caught up with her training.

Ghost was nearby, leaning against the side of the tent, watching silently.

Everyone knew Ghost was intimidating. Not because he tried to be, but because he had that calm, unreadable way about him. Nothing seemed to surprise him anymore.

The trainee looked at the medical supplies and made a decision.

A bad one.

"Wait," Milky said, noticing what she was reaching for.

Too late.

The trainee applied medical alcohol directly, thinking she was doing what she had been taught: clean, disinfect, fix.

The problem was that training wasn't just about knowing what something did.

It was knowing when not to use it.

Ghost reacted instantly.

"Stop."

The trainee froze.

Then came the mistake on top of the mistake.

She panicked.

Ghost's sudden movement startled her, and before anyone could process what happened, she swung in fear and hit him.

The entire tent went quiet.

Even the other medics stopped moving.

Milky stared.

Ghost stared.

The trainee stared at what she had just done, the realization slowly catching up.

"I—"

She couldn't finish the sentence.

Milky rubbed his forehead.

"Okay," he said slowly. "That is... a new one."

Ghost looked at him.

"You going to defend her?"

Milky looked back at the trainee, then at Ghost.

"No."

A pause.

"Not really."

The trainee looked crushed.

Milky sighed.

"But I understand why it happened."

Ghost raised an eyebrow.

"Fear?"

"Fear. Stress. New medic. Bad decision under pressure."

Milky glanced around the tent.

"Doesn't make it okay. Doesn't make it smart. But it does explain it."

Ghost was quiet for a moment.

The thing about Ghost was that he had seen people break under pressure. He had seen trained professionals make mistakes when the world got too loud.

The difference was whether they learned from it.

The trainee finally spoke.

"I'm sorry."

Ghost looked at her.

"Don't apologize to me."

She looked confused.

"Apologize by learning."

That was the closest thing to kindness Ghost usually gave.

Milky shook his head.

"First week here and you managed to do something none of us expected."

The trainee looked embarrassed.

"What?"

Milky looked at Ghost.

"You managed to surprise Ghost."

A tiny smile almost appeared on Ghost's face.

Almost.

"Don't make that a habit."

The trainee nodded quickly.

And from that day forward, every new medic learned one important rule:

The battlefield was dangerous.

But panic could be just as dangerous.

Another base, another briefing

For once, the base was quiet.

Not silent — a military base was never truly silent — but quiet enough that people remembered they were human.

The constant rush had slowed. No alarms. No sudden calls. No waves of injured personnel arriving all at once.

The new medics finally got a chance to sit down without feeling like they were abandoning someone.

Some were eating actual meals instead of grabbing whatever was closest. Some were sleeping. Some were just sitting outside, enjoying the rare moment where the world wasn't demanding something from them.

It almost felt wrong.

After weeks of chaos, peace felt suspicious.

Milky noticed it immediately.

"Everyone's acting weird," he said, watching a group of trainees laughing outside the medical area.

Ghost looked over.

"Weird?"

"They're relaxed."

Ghost stared at him.

"That's normal."

Milky gave him a look.

"Not here."

That was the problem.

They had gotten so used to constant pressure that normal felt unusual.

Then the order came.

Ghost's crew was being moved to another base temporarily.

Not because something had gone wrong.

Actually, the opposite.

They were needed for a briefing.

A high-level one.

The kind where people didn't explain everything over the radio. The kind where certain teams were physically brought in because their experience mattered.

Milky read the message twice.

"So we leave everyone here during the only calm period we've had?"

Ghost grabbed his gear.

"That's usually when they do it."

Milky sighed.

"Of course."

The rest of the crew began preparing.

The newer medics watched them quietly.

To them, Ghost's crew had become almost legendary. Not because they were superheroes, but because they moved through chaos like they belonged there.

The trainees were still learning how to handle a bad day.

Ghost's team had learned how to handle worse.

One of the new medics approached Milky.

"Are you coming back?"

Milky looked at her.

"Probably."

"Probably?"

He smiled slightly.

"Out here, 'definitely' is a dangerous word."

Ghost walked past them.

"Milky."

"Yeah?"

"We leave in five."

Milky nodded.

The base slowly returned to its peaceful rhythm as their vehicle pulled away.

For once, nobody was running.

Nobody was screaming.

Nobody needed saving.

But everyone knew something about deployments:

The quiet moments were never the end.

They were just the moments people got to breathe before the next storm.

[time skip]

The ride to the other base was strangely calm.

That alone made everyone uncomfortable.

Ghost sat by the window, looking out at the landscape passing by. He wasn't asleep. He rarely slept during transport. He just watched.

Milky, sitting across from him, noticed.

"You know most people use quiet time to relax."

Ghost didn't look away.

"I am relaxed."

Milky glanced at him.

"You look like you're waiting for someone to jump out of a bush."

A pause.

"Someone could."

Milky sighed.

"That's exactly my point."

A couple of the others in the vehicle quietly laughed.

It was one of the rare moments where Ghost actually allowed the mood to lighten.

The briefing itself was everything they expected.

Long.

Detailed.

Full of maps, reports, and information that made everyone realize just how much was happening outside the small piece of the world they had been living in.

Their base had been a small part of something much bigger.

Milky leaned back in his chair as another officer explained the situation.

"At least we're not getting called in because someone did something stupid."

Ghost looked at him.

"Don't say that."

Milky froze.

"...Why?"

"Because every time someone says that, someone does something stupid."

The room went quiet for half a second.

Then one of the officers laughed.

"He's not wrong."

After the briefing, the crew was given a rare luxury.

Free time.

Not much.

But enough.

Milky immediately disappeared toward the food area.

Ghost watched him go.

"Food?"

"Real food," Milky called back. "Not whatever the med tent has been pretending is food."

Ghost almost smiled.

Almost.

The other base felt different.

There were more people walking around casually. Soldiers joking with each other. Mechanics working while music played nearby. People acting like they had lives outside of their jobs.

It reminded them of what they were fighting to protect.

For a few hours, Ghost's crew got to be normal.

Milky sat with a drink in his hand, watching people move around.

"You ever think about what you'd do if this wasn't your life?"

Ghost looked at him.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning if tomorrow you woke up and there wasn't a mission. No briefings. No deployment."

Ghost was quiet.

It took longer than usual for him to answer.

"I don't know."

Milky looked surprised.

"Really?"

"Really."

That answer said more than a long speech could have.

Because Ghost wasn't someone who hated peace.

He just wasn't used to it.

Before Milky could respond, a message came through.

The sound instantly changed the atmosphere.

Everyone at the table recognized it.

That little sound that meant the outside world was calling them back.

Milky looked at his device.

Then at Ghost.

Ghost was already standing.

"Already?"

Milky sighed.

"Guess peace had a short schedule."

They gathered their things.

The same people who had been laughing minutes ago were now moving with practiced efficiency.

Because that was the strange thing about people like them.

They could laugh.

They could relax.

They could pretend everything was normal.

But the moment they were needed...

They became soldiers again.

Date

For once, nobody was chasing them.

No alarms.

No urgent calls.

No mission clock counting down.

Just a few hours of freedom in a city that continued moving like the world wasn't constantly on the edge of something.

Ghost's crew had been given permission to go out and clear their heads. No strict schedule. No constant check-ins.

The kind of freedom that felt almost unfamiliar.

Ghost was prepared for a walk.

Milky was prepared for a problem.

The problem was Ghost still had his mask on.

"No."

Ghost looked at him.

"No?"

"No mask."

Ghost stared.

"Milky."

"You heard me."

A few members of the crew nearby immediately became interested.

Not because they wanted to interfere.

Because they absolutely wanted to see how this went.

Ghost crossed his arms.

"I don't see the issue."

"The issue," Milky said, pointing at him, "is that you're walking through an entire city looking like you're about to interrogate someone."

A pause.

"I am not."

"You look like you are."

The crew members were suddenly very busy looking anywhere except at them.

Ghost noticed.

"They're enjoying this."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Milky shrugged.

"Because you're impossible."

After a long silence, Ghost finally removed the mask.

Just for a few minutes.

Milky smiled like he had just won a battle nobody else knew was happening.

"There. See? Normal."

Ghost gave him a look.

"I have never been normal."

"Closer."

The city was a strange contrast to the base.

People were laughing in the streets. Shops were open. Music played from somewhere nearby. Nobody knew or cared that the people walking past them were soldiers who had just come from a completely different world.

Milky walked beside Ghost, holding onto his arm casually.

Ghost looked down.

"You know people are going to assume things."

Milky looked completely unconcerned.

"Let them."

That was one of the things Ghost found confusing about Milky.

Most people tried to fit into a certain image.

Milky didn't.

He wore whatever he wanted.

Pinks. Whites. Light yellows. Anything comfortable.

Today, someone had handed him an oversized hoodie and a pair of shorts, and he had simply decided that was good enough.

No overthinking.

No worrying about what anyone thought.

Just Milky being Milky.

Ghost looked at him.

"You really don't care?"

"About clothes?"

"About what people think."

Milky laughed.

"Not really."

Ghost shook his head slightly.

"You are strange."

"You're just noticing?"

They continued walking.

Eventually, they stopped at a small shop window. Nothing important. Nothing tactical. Nothing related to survival.

Just a normal place selling normal things.

And for some reason, that was what made the moment feel unusual.

Ghost's friends had conveniently disappeared earlier.

Very conveniently.

Suspiciously conveniently.

Milky noticed.

"They planned this."

Ghost glanced around.

"They did."

"And you're not going to do anything?"

"No."

Milky looked surprised.

"Really?"

"They needed entertainment."

That earned a laugh.

For once, Ghost wasn't the untouchable soldier everyone knew.

He was just a person walking through a city with someone who refused to let him hide behind a mask forever.

And when the crew eventually found them again, they were far too pleased with themselves.

Milky immediately knew.

"They're never letting this go."

"No."

"Regrets?"

Ghost looked at the city around them.

A pause.

"No."

Milky smiled.

That was probably the closest thing to an admission they were going to get.
