The city never truly slept.

Even at midnight, the streets glowed beneath colorful neon signs, traffic lights blinked lazily at nearly empty intersections, and the distant sound of sirens blended with the hum of late-night life. On the rooftop of a twelve-story building, Kai Anderson sat comfortably on the edge, one leg dangling over the side.

Without hesitation he tackled Elena behind a concrete barrier.

Concrete exploded into dust.

Elena looked at him with equal parts anger and confusion.

"Who are you?"

"Good question."

"You don't know?"

"I know."

"Then answer me!"

"I'm Kai."

"That's it?"

"Would you like my favorite pizza topping too?"

She glared at him.

"You are unbelievable."

"I hear that a lot."

Another explosion interrupted them.

The black vans had blocked both ends of the street.

More armed soldiers climbed out.

Kai peeked around the corner.

"Oh."

"What?"

"I counted wrong."

"How many?"

"Twenty."

Elena's face turned pale.

"Twenty?"

"Approximately."

"Approximately?"

"I stopped counting when they started shooting."

Elena looked at him as though she had been assigned the worst bodyguard in history.

He started running upward.

After a few seconds, Elena had no choice but to follow.

The rain had made every step slippery.

Halfway up, one of the metal bolts snapped.

"Kai!"

"I've got you."

"Need a ride?"

"Max!"

"I leave you alone for one evening..."

He looked at Elena.

"...and you've already made a new friend."

Elena folded her arms.

"I'm not his friend."

Kai nodded.

"That's fair."

Max pointed toward the helicopter.

"Looks like you've upset someone."

"I don't even know who they are."

"That's impressive."

"It happens more often than you'd think."

The helicopter's spotlight found them again.

Max sighed.

"We should probably leave."

Kai nodded.

"Agreed."

Max looked at Elena.

"You coming?"

She hesitated.

With a reluctant sigh, she climbed onto the motorcycle behind Max.
