The Flags That Tear Us Apart

A Meeting Beneath the New York Sky

The autumn sky over New York City stretched clear and bright above the headquarters of the United Nations. Flags from every nation fluttered in harmony with the cool breeze, welcoming hundreds of delegates, diplomats, journalists, and security officers as they arrived. The international stage was set, holding both hope and unspoken tension.

Shouts from reporters overlapped as the door of a black diplomatic sedan swung open. Camera flashes lit up endlessly, while security personnel immediately formed a tight line to keep their distance.

Verlando "Ando" Asterian, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Arvenia, stepped out with calm composure. His black suit was immaculate, without a single wrinkle, and the navy blue tie bearing his nation’s emblem sat perfectly in place. His gaze swept steadily across the surroundings, before offering a brief nod to several fellow diplomats who had arrived earlier.

"Good morning, Minister Verlando."

"Good morning," he replied, concise yet polite.

Before he could take another step, a dozen microphones were extended toward him.

"Minister, will Arvenia support the regional peace resolution tabled today?"

"Is it true your government is exploring new trade partnerships with Asian nations?"

"Do you intend to meet with the Velorian delegation during this session?"

Nathan Elric, his Chief of Staff, raised a hand slightly to signal. "Apologies, the Minister must proceed directly to the assembly hall."

But one journalist called out again. "Just one more question, Minister!"

Ando paused for a moment, looking straight into the cameras. "We are here to engage in formal dialogue, not to state our positions through the media. The Republic of Arvenia’s full statement will be delivered during the session."

Those words were broadcast instantly across every live feed around the world.

Nathan gave a faint smile as they walked inside. "Safe, measured response. As always."

Ando replied quietly, his eyes remaining alert to every detail. "Our duty is not to create sensational headlines, Nathan. It is to ensure that international relations remain standing firm."

On the other side of the courtyard, the motorcade of the Kingdom of Veloria arrived. The door opened, and a woman stepped out with effortless grace. Zera Della Naviera, the youngest Minister of Foreign Affairs in Veloria’s history, looked striking in an ivory tailored suit, with a pale blue scarf draped neatly around her neck. Her movements were calm, yet her gaze carried such unyielding resolve that everyone around her felt both a sense of deference and deep respect.

"Good morning, Minister Zera."

"Good morning," Zera replied with a warm smile.

Livia Moreau, her personal secretary, stepped forward glancing at her tablet. "The first agenda begins in thirty minutes. After that, you have a bilateral meeting with Nordvia, followed by a luncheon with the Secretary-General."

"Very well. Ensure all our position papers are complete and arranged in order."

"I have checked them three times already, Minister."

Zera nodded slowly, then walked toward the main entrance.

Suddenly, a UN staff member rushed past carrying a stack of documents, and accidentally bumped into Zera’s shoulder.

"Excuse me! Pardon me!"

Thud!

The blue folder in Zera’s hands slipped loose. Dozens of pages scattered, caught by the autumn wind and flying in every direction.

"Oh, I am so sorry! It was truly an accident!" The staff member looked utterly panicked.

People nearby glanced briefly, then returned to their own affairs. No one stopped.

Except one person.

Verlando.

Without hesitation, he knelt down and began gathering the scattered pages one by one. Nathan and Livia quickly stepped in to help as well.

When only one sheet remained, caught near their feet, both Ando and Zera reached for it at almost the same time. Their fingers brushed for a fleeting instant.

Both froze.

Zera pulled her hand away first, hiding the sudden, quiet surprise that had risen within her.

"Thank you very much, Minister."

Ando handed over the neatly reassembled folder. "You are welcome."

Their eyes met for the very first time. Only for a few seconds. Yet somehow, it felt as though something had shifted between them—as if they had known each other long ago, even though both were certain they had never crossed paths before.

"Delegation of the Republic of Arvenia, please proceed to the main assembly hall!" the protocol officer’s voice broke the silence.

Immediately followed by the next announcement. "Delegation of the Kingdom of Veloria, please make your way to the assembly hall."

Ando gave a polite nod. "I will see you inside, Minister."

Zera offered a faint smile. "Until then."

They walked in opposite directions toward separate entrances. No one noticed that one reporter’s camera was still rolling, capturing that brief moment—a simple photograph of two national leaders, helping one another with no hidden agenda.

No one yet knew that this fleeting encounter would mark the beginning of a far greater story. One that would see their two nations standing on opposing sides, between feelings that had grown unexpectedly, and loyalties that would be put to the ultimate test.

The Same Table

The United Nations General Assembly officially opened. The Secretary-General delivered a lengthy address regarding rising tensions across the globe: border conflicts that show no end, spreading trade wars, energy crises, and expanding humanitarian suffering. The entire chamber listened intently, punctuated by the rapid scribbling of delegates and the unceasing flash of media cameras.

Moments later, it was Verlando Asterian’s turn to take the podium.

“Your Excellency the Secretary-General, Heads of Delegation, distinguished guests.”

His voice was steady, clear, and commanding. Every statement was delivered with thorough data and firm resolve, yet always steeped in respect.

“The Republic of Arvenia believes that peace can never stand on military might alone. Peace must be built on mutual trust, fair economic cooperation, and continuous dialogue. But there is no use speaking of peace if every nation only thinks of its own interests first.”

Those words immediately caught attention. International cameras shifted to focus on him. When he returned to his seat, the room greeted him with measured yet sincere applause.

Nathan leaned in quietly. “An excellent address, Minister.”

Ando gave only a brief nod. “It is not the words that matter. But whether they truly understand what lies behind them.”

Shortly after, the moderator spoke again. “Next, the Kingdom of Veloria.”

Zera Della Naviera stepped forward calmly. The moment she stood before the microphones, the atmosphere seemed to shift. Where Ando spoke through logic and facts, Zera reached the parts of the heart often forgotten.

“Peace is not merely the silence of gunfire,” she said softly but firmly. “Peace is when every child can walk to school without fear their home will burn. When every family can eat in peace without the shadow of war hanging over them. Today’s conflicts are not about who wins or loses. They are about how many innocent lives must bear the weight of the decisions we make from this room.”

The chamber fell silent for a moment, before applause erupted—louder and longer than before. Even Verlando found himself clapping slowly, genuinely.

Nathan gave a small smile beside him. “It seems the Minister of Veloria’s words have touched many hearts.”

Ando watched her as she returned to her seat. “I simply respect every word spoken with sincerity.”

The session continued well into the afternoon. When the bell signaled the break, delegates made their way to the grand dining hall. Round tables were arranged neatly, with nameplates assigned by the organizers.

And among so many tables, fate brought them together once more.

Verlando and Zera sat side by side at the same table, accompanied by several other foreign ministers from various nations.

They nodded politely to one another.

“It appears we cannot escape unexpected meetings, Minister,” Zera said with a faint smile.

Ando offered a small smile in return. “Let us hope without flying documents this time.”

Zera gave a soft laugh—a light sound amid the usually stiff atmosphere.

A minister from a neighboring country joined in with a smile. “In that case, let us all hold onto our folders tightly so no such incidents happen again.”

The mood at the table lightened. Conversation flowed easily yet meaningfully—from the unique cultures of their respective nations, educational cooperation, to amusing stories of their very first international assemblies. There was no unnecessary formality, no out-of-place banter. Yet beneath it all, both found themselves quietly observing one another.

Ando noticed how Zera always listened attentively, never interrupted, and responded with sharp, thoughtful insight.

Zera, in turn, realized that Ando chose his words carefully, speaking only what was necessary—yet every word carried weight and depth.

When the luncheon ended, delegates returned to their respective chambers. Some chose to walk slowly through the corridors or breathe fresh air in the gardens behind the building.

Ando stood alone near a large window in the main hallway, gazing at the rows of member-state flags waving in the autumn breeze while holding a cup of black coffee.

He had been there only a moment when footsteps approached.

“May I stand here for a while?”

Ando turned. Zera stood beside him, holding a cup of warm tea.

“Of course.”

They stood side by side in silence for a moment, watching the bustling city of New York unfold beyond the glass.

“Beautiful view, is it not?” Zera asked softly.

“It is,” Ando replied slowly. “Yet I often wonder… behind every one of those flags, there are millions of lives placing their hopes in us. Hoping that their nation remains safe, peaceful, and prosperous.”

Zera glanced at him briefly, then looked back out.

“And we are here to ensure that hope stays alive.”

Ando turned to meet her gaze. Their eyes held a moment longer than before.

“May we both be equal to that task.”

Before their conversation could continue, official mobile phones vibrated almost in unison.

Nathan stepped forward quickly. “Minister, the President is calling and requests a brief report before the afternoon session begins.”

Not far away, Livia hurried over as well. “Minister Zera, the Nordvian delegation is already waiting in the bilateral meeting room.”

They looked at one another and shared a small smile.

“I look forward to seeing you again, Minister Verlando,” Zera said.

“Until then, Minister Zera.”

They parted ways once more to their respective duties, unaware that a quiet, sincere respect had begun to take root between two diplomats who had once been nothing more than strangers.

Meanwhile, in another corner of the building, an international journalist reopened the gallery of photos taken that morning. Among hundreds of images of proceedings and handshakes, his eyes settled on one simple shot: two foreign ministers, kneeling side by side to gather scattered papers.

He smiled faintly at the image.

“Who knows… perhaps this is more than just a news photograph.”

For now, he saved it carefully. Because he knew—their story had only just begun.

The Emergency Session

The chime rang out clearly through every corridor of the United Nations Headquarters, signaling the end of the break. Delegates who had shared light conversation only moments earlier now made their way steadily toward the main assembly hall, their demeanor turning serious once again.

Verlando set his empty coffee cup down on a small table beside the window. His gaze lingered for a moment on the ceaseless bustle of Manhattan. Beside him, Zera still held her half‑full cup of tea; the faint smile that had touched her lips slowly faded, replaced by vigilance as the announcement echoed over the loudspeakers.

“All delegates are requested to proceed immediately to the General Assembly Hall. The Secretary‑General will address an urgent additional agenda item.”

Nathan hurried over to Ando. “Minister.”

“What has happened?”

“Reports have just arrived from the Deputy Secretary‑General—the situation in the Middle East has deteriorated sharply.”

Ando’s brow furrowed briefly. “An emergency session?”

“It appears so.”

Not far away, Livia also approached Zera quickly yet with composure.

“Minister, there has been a sudden change to the afternoon agenda.”

“Related to the ongoing conflict?”

“It is, Minister.”

Zera drew a long breath, steadying herself. “Very well.”

She turned toward Verlando. Their eyes met for an instant, understanding passing between them without a word.

“It seems our moment of calm must end sooner than expected,” Zera said softly.

Ando gave a faint, knowing smile. “That is the part of our duty that never comes with warning.”

They walked side by side toward the assembly doors, before parting to take their places among their respective delegations.

The atmosphere inside felt far heavier than it had that morning. Where quiet murmurs had still lingered, nearly every face now bore tension and alertness. A large screen at the front displayed a map of the Middle East, with blinking red markers indicating regions gripped by rising strain.

The Secretary‑General stood at the podium, addressing the room with solemn gravity.

“Distinguished delegates…” He paused, choosing his words carefully. “Over the past twelve hours, the world faces a worrying escalation. Reciprocal attacks have taken place between the Republic of Erania and the State of Ziona. Furthermore, international trade routes passing through the region are already disrupted—effects that will soon be felt by every nation on Earth.”

A ripple of whispers spread through the chamber. The screen shifted to show graphs tracking energy prices spiking sharply in a matter of hours.

“If this conflict continues,” the Secretary‑General continued firmly, “its impact will not be limited to the parties involved. It will shake the economic and security foundations of the entire world.”

Nathan leaned close to Ando’s ear. “Stock markets and exchange rates will certainly fluctuate the moment this session ends.”

Verlando kept his gaze fixed on the display. “It is not only the economy, Nathan. The trust we have built so carefully between nations will also begin to crack.”

The moderator then opened the floor for responses. One by one, representatives stated their positions: the Federation of Columbia called for immediate restraint on all sides; the Republic of Zhonghua affirmed that diplomacy remains the only legitimate path; the representative of Ruskovia highlighted how unilateral sanctions often burden ordinary people most.

Though spoken in measured diplomatic language, each nation’s underlying interests could not be entirely concealed.

Zera noted every key point, occasionally exchanging quiet remarks with Livia.

“Veloria must not align with any single side,” she murmured.

Livia nodded in understanding. “Should we still offer unconditional humanitarian assistance?”

“That is our highest priority. Above all else lies human life.”

Moments later, the Republic of Arvenia was called.

Verlando rose calmly, and all eyes turned to him once more.

“The Republic of Arvenia deeply regrets this renewed escalation of violence that has claimed more innocent lives,” he said, his tone firm yet compassionate. “We urge all parties to cease all military action immediately and return to the negotiating table. No victory is worth celebrating if it is built upon the suffering of civilians.”

His words drew nods and respectful, sincere applause from many delegates. Ando returned to his seat.

Shortly after, the Kingdom of Veloria was invited to speak.

Zera stepped to the podium, holding her head high. She scanned the room briefly before beginning.

“The Kingdom of Veloria extends its deepest condolences to all victims of this conflict, without distinction of nationality, race, or creed,” she said gently but with authority. “Children, women, medical workers, and ordinary citizens must never be made the price of political decisions made by leaders in this chamber. Veloria stands ready to support all humanitarian efforts led by the United Nations to alleviate the suffering of those affected.”

When she finished, applause broke out—longer and warmer than before. Verlando joined in, clapping slowly and sincerely, longer than he had for any other speaker.

Nathan nudged his superior’s arm lightly with a faint smile. “Minister…”

“Mm?”

“It seems you pay rather close attention to Minister Zera.”

Ando gave a small smile without looking away. “I simply respect words spoken with sincerity and humanity at their heart.”

Nathan smiled knowingly and said no more.

As afternoon drew on, the session was temporarily adjourned to allow delegates to consult with their governments. Corridors filled once more; reporters sought statements from every representative, camera flashes lighting up without pause.

In the media room, a photographer sorted through hundreds of shots taken throughout the day. He paused on two images, captured at different times yet sharing a striking pattern: the first showed Verlando kneeling to help Zera gather scattered documents; the second, the two of them speaking quietly by the window during the break.

He raised an eyebrow, staring at his camera screen with curiosity.

“Is this mere coincidence… or the start of something unexpected?”

A colleague stepped up beside him. “What have you found?”

“I am not sure,” he replied softly, a faint smile touching his lips. “Two foreign ministers, repeatedly appearing in the same frame at the most unforeseen moments.”

“Probably just coincidence,” the other said.

“Perhaps.” But the photographer moved both images into a separate folder before putting his device away.

Outside, the sun began to sink behind New York’s skyline, painting the sky in streaks of deep orange. Verlando and Zera walked toward their official vehicles, unaware that more and more eyes were beginning to notice their encounters.

To the world at this moment, they were simply two diplomats carrying out their nations’ duties. But no one yet knew that the seeds of a remarkable story had only just been planted in the unforgiving world of international diplomacy.
