HE LIKES BOYS......I Think

Chapter 1

The first time I heard it, it sounded like a joke. "He likes boys, I think." The words drifted across the classroom in a careless whisper, followed by a few muffled laughs. I didn't even bother looking up from my notebook. High school was full of rumors. By lunchtime, someone was secretly dating a celebrity. By dinner, they had moved to another country. But this rumor was about Noah. The quiet boy who always sat by the window. The one who wore oversized hoodies no matter how hot it was outside. The one who answered every teacher's question without trying to sound smart. The one who smiled so rarely that when he did, people couldn't help but stare. I had never seen him interested in anyone. No girls. No flirting. Nothing. So when Maya slid into the seat beside me with the excitement of someone carrying breaking news, I already knew what she was about to say
maya
maya
Have you heard??
Eli
Eli
I sighed. "If this is another rumor—"
maya
maya
"It's about Noah."
Eli
Eli
Closed my notebook. "What about him?" She leaned in dramatically
maya
maya
He likes boys."
Eli
Eli
I blinked. "...According to who?" She hesitated
maya
maya
I don't know."
Eli
Eli
I laughed. "So... according to nobody."
maya
maya
"No! Emily heard it from Daniel, and Daniel heard it from his cousin."
Eli
Eli
"That sounds incredibly reliable," I said.
maya
maya
She rolled her eyes.
Eli
Eli
"I'm serious."
Across the room, Noah was reading a novel as if the entire class didn't exist. He wasn't the type to notice whispers—or maybe he noticed all of them and had simply learned not to react. There was something lonely about him. Something that made you wonder what was going on inside his head. The bell rang. Everyone stood. Noah quietly packed his bag and walked out before anyone else. Without realizing it, I watched him leave. Maya noticed.
maya
maya
"Why are you staring?"
Eli
Eli
"I wasn't."
maya
maya
"You totally were."
Eli
Eli
I shrugged. "I was just wondering."
maya
maya
"Wondering what?"
Eli
Eli
I looked toward the empty doorway. "Whether the rumor is true."
I had no idea that question would completely change my life.

chapter 2

Monday mornings always felt like a punishment. Mr. Lawson believed changing the seating chart every month would "encourage collaboration." Most of us believed it encouraged suffering. He stood at the front of the room with a printed list.
Lawson
Lawson
"As I call your names, find your new seats."
Groans echoed through the classroom.
When he called mine, I glanced at the chart.
Lawson
Lawson
Row three. Window seat.
I smiled. Then I read the name beside mine.
Eli
Eli
Noah Carter.
Maya's jaw dropped from across the room. She mouthed, Good luck. I rolled my eyes and walked over. Noah was already there, quietly unpacking his books. He didn't look up until I pulled out the chair beside him.
Noah
Noah
"Oh," he said softly. "Hi."
Eli
Eli
"Hi." That was it. No dramatic music. No awkward silence that lasted forever. Just... hi.
Mr. Lawson began the lesson, but I couldn't focus. Every few minutes I caught Noah scribbling something in the corner of his notebook. Not notes. Drawings. Tiny sketches of people. Trees. Birds. Faces.
Eli
Eli
"They're good," I whispered.
Noah
Noah
He quickly closed the notebook. "Thanks."
Eli
Eli
"You draw a lot?"
Noah
Noah
"When I can't think."
Eli
Eli
I frowned. "I thought drawing was thinking."
Noah
Noah
A small smile appeared on his face. "You might be right."
Eli
Eli
It was the first genuine smile I'd ever seen from him. For a second, I forgot about every rumor I'd heard. He just looked... normal. Kind. Shy.
At lunch, Maya practically dragged me to our table.
maya
maya
"So?"
Eli
Eli
"So what?"
maya
maya
"What was it like sitting next to him?"
Eli
Eli
"He's nice."
maya
maya
"That's it?"
Eli
Eli
"He draws."
maya
maya
She stared.
maya
maya
"You're telling me the mysterious Noah finally speaks to someone and your biggest discovery is that he draws?"
Eli
Eli
"What were you expecting?"
maya
maya
"I don't know... a confession?"
Eli
Eli
I laughed. "You're impossible."
maya
maya
She leaned closer. "Did he seem... you know?"
Eli
Eli
"What does 'you know' even look like?"
maya
maya
She opened her mouth. Then closed it.
maya
maya
"I... don't know."
Eli
Eli
Neither did I.
Maybe that was the problem. People expected someone to look or act a certain way, as though a rumor could tell you everything about a person.
The final bell rang, and rain poured from the sky. Students crowded the entrance, waiting for it to sto
Eli
Eli
I sighed. "I forgot my umbrella."
Noah
Noah
So did I
Eli
Eli
It surprised me that he'd spoken first. He looked outside.
Noah
Noah
"My house is this way
Eli
Eli
"So is mine."
Noah
Noah
He hesitated before opening a black umbrella. "You can share... if you want."
Eli
Eli
For a moment, neither of us moved. Then I stepped under the umbrella beside him.
The walk home was quiet at first. The rain drummed against the fabric above us.
Eli
Eli
"So..." I said.
Noah
Noah
"So..."
Eli
Eli
"You don't talk much."
Noah
Noah
"I usually don't know what to say."
Eli
Eli
"I talk too much."
Noah
Noah
"I noticed."
Eli
Eli
I laughed. "So you have been paying attention." He looked embarrassed.
Noah
Noah
A little."
Eli
Eli
For the first time, I realized how easy it felt to walk beside him. The rumors didn't matter. Not anymore. What mattered was the person standing next to me. And I was beginning to think there was a lot more to Noah than anyone at school knew.
