anyways let's start the story now

...The First Meeting...

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the café as soft music played in the background. A young woman sat quietly by the window, her fingers gently tracing the rim of her coffee cup.

Every few seconds, she glanced at the entrance.

It had been almost an hour.

Just as she was about to check the time again, the café door opened.

A tall young man walked in, his sharp eyes scanning the room before stopping on her. Without hesitation, he made his way toward her table.

"Hi... Shreya?" he asked politely.

She looked up and smiled.

"Yes, I'm Shreya. Nice to meet you."

Her smile was bright and genuine, carrying both excitement and nervousness.

He gave a slight nod before taking the seat opposite her.

"My mother asked me to give this to you."

He placed a neatly wrapped saree packet on the table.

Shreya accepted it with a warm smile.

"Thank you."

She carefully placed the gift inside her purse before looking at him again.

"So... are you ready for the wedding?"

A brief silence followed.

Karthik looked at her for a moment before replying calmly,

"Yes."

His short answer made the conversation awkward.

Shreya let out a small laugh, trying to lighten the atmosphere.

"I know this feels a little strange. We're practically strangers, yet in just a few days, we'll be husband and wife."

For the first time, Karthik looked directly into her eyes.

"I hope we understand each other with time."

Shreya smiled softly.

"I hope so too."

chapter 2

The waiter arrived with two cups of coffee and placed them on the table before quietly walking away.

Shreya wrapped both her hands around the warm cup and looked at the man sitting across from her. He was calm, composed, and unusually quiet.

"So..." she began with a smile, "our parents have already decided everything. But I think we should at least get to know each other before the wedding."

Karthik looked at her for a brief moment before replying, "There's not much to know."

She chuckled softly.

"I don't believe that. Everyone has something to share."

He remained silent.

Trying to keep the conversation alive, she asked, "What do you like to do in your free time?"

"I usually work."

"Only work?" she asked in surprise.

He nodded.

"No movies? No travelling? No hobbies?"

"Not really."

Shreya sighed dramatically before laughing.

"You must be a very boring person."

For the first time since they met, the corners of Karthik's lips lifted into a faint smile.

"I've heard that before."

His smile disappeared almost instantly, but Shreya had already noticed it.

At least he smiled, she thought happily.

The silence between them no longer felt uncomfortable.

She took a sip of her coffee before asking another question.

"Can I ask you something personal?"

"If you want."

"What kind of wife do you expect?"

Karthik's fingers tightened slightly around his coffee cup.

"I've never thought about it."

His answer surprised her.

"I have."

His eyes slowly met hers.

"I don't expect a perfect husband," she said with a gentle smile. "I just want someone who respects me, trusts me, and stands by me no matter what happens."

She paused for a moment before continuing.

"I've always believed that love doesn't have to happen before marriage. Sometimes, it grows slowly after two people start understanding each other."

There was a sincerity in her voice that Karthik couldn't ignore.

She wasn't trying to impress him.

She was simply speaking from her heart.

"I know we're strangers today," she said softly, "but I hope one day we'll become friends... and maybe even each other's safe place."

Karthik looked away.

For reasons he couldn't explain, her words made his heart feel strangely heavy.

"I hope so too," he replied quietly.

A smile instantly appeared on Shreya's face.

She had no idea that while she was dreaming about a future together, Karthik was silently carrying a burden he couldn't share with her.

After finishing their coffee, they both stood up.

"I'll drop you home," Karthik said.

"Oh, no. It's okay. I came here by cab."

"I insisted."

Without waiting for her response, he walked toward the exit.

Shreya quickly followed him, unable to stop smiling.

Maybe he wasn't as cold as he seemed.

Maybe he simply needed time.

As they walked out of the café together, neither of them realized that fate had already begun writing a story that would change both their lives forever.

Chapter 3: A Secret in the Silence

The entire house was wrapped in silence.

The wedding celebrations had finally come to an end. Exhausted after a long day, everyone had fallen asleep.

Karthik slowly opened the bedroom door and stepped outside, making sure not to make a sound.

He glanced back once.

Shreya was fast asleep, hugging the edge of the bed like a child. A few strands of hair had fallen across her face, but she didn't seem to notice.

For a brief moment, Karthik stood there quietly.

Then he looked away.

Closing the door gently behind him, he walked toward the balcony.

The cool night breeze brushed against his face as he took a deep breath. Without wasting another second, he pulled out his phone and dialed a familiar number.

The call connected after the second ring.

"Hello..."

A soft voice answered from the other side.

"Nisha..."

His voice, which had remained distant all day, suddenly softened.

"Did everything go well?" she asked, trying to sound calm.

Karthik closed his eyes.

"Yes... the wedding is over."

A painful silence followed.

Neither of them knew what to say.

"I kept thinking about you all day," Nisha whispered.

"I'm sorry."

Those two words escaped Karthik's lips almost immediately.

"You don't have to apologize," she replied with a weak laugh. "None of this happened because you wanted it."

He leaned against the balcony railing.

"I feel like I've ruined everyone's life."

"You haven't."

"I married someone while loving someone else."

His voice was filled with guilt.

"I don't even know how I'm supposed to face her every day."

Nisha remained silent for a few seconds before speaking.

"You promised me."

"I remember."

"You said... just one year."

Karthik tightened his grip on the phone.

"Yes."

"After one year..."

"I'll talk to my parents."

"And then?"

"I'll divorce her."

The words left his mouth, but instead of relief, they filled him with an unbearable heaviness.

On the other end of the call, Nisha wiped away a tear.

"I hate seeing you like this."

"I'll keep my promise."

"I know you will."

Another silence followed.

"Did you... talk to her?" Nisha asked softly.

"Only a little."

"How is she?"

Karthik looked through the glass window into the bedroom.

Shreya was still sleeping peacefully, completely unaware of the conversation taking place just outside.

"She's..."

He paused.

"...kind."

Nisha smiled sadly.

"I hope she never gets hurt because of us."

His heart skipped a beat.

For the first time, he couldn't find the right words.

"I have to go," he finally said.

"Take care."

"You too."

The call ended.

Karthik stared at the blank phone screen for several seconds before slipping it back into his pocket.

He remained standing on the balcony, wondering if he was making the biggest mistake of his life.

After a while, he quietly returned to the bedroom.

Shreya had shifted in her sleep. The blanket had slipped off her shoulder.

Without thinking, Karthik picked it up and gently covered her.

She smiled faintly in her sleep.

The simple gesture made him freeze.

For a brief second, guilt settled deep inside his heart.

He quickly stepped back, switched off the bedside lamp, and lay down on the couch once again.

As sleep slowly claimed the room...

Neither of them knew that fate had already begun changing the future they believed was already decided.
