Echoes of Broken Heart

where the echo began

"Before I knew her name, I knew her

Silence".

Some people arrive in your life with a smile. She arrived with a smile so gentle that it echoed louder than any voice I have heard. Every morning, beneath the old rain-soaked bridge, she stood watching the river as though it carried memories instead of water.

We never spoke. We never even looked at each other for more than a second. Yet somehow, I felt as if the quiet around her and already learned my name.

For thirty-two mornings our lives crossed at

exactly 7:15

She always wore the same sky-blue

backpack

She always spotted for a few moments at the bridge, closed her eyes, and listened not to the music, not to the people, but to the wind

I wonder what she heard...

Perhaps nothing...

Perhaps everything…

I wanted to ask her why she stood there every morning, but some questions felt too beautiful to interrupt.

So I simply watched.

One rainy morning, she wasn't there

The bridge looked the same...

The river flowed the same...

The city woke exactly as it always did...

Yet something was missing...

Only then did I realize that a stranger's silence had quietly become part of my morning.

That evening I found a small white flower resting on the bridge railing.

There was no one around.

Tied to its stem was a tiny folded note.

With trembling fingers, I folded it.

It contained only one sentence.

"Some echoes are meant to be followed."

I looked around.

For the first time, I wasn't searching for the flower.

But for the girl....

The bridge stretched before me, empty except for the whisper of the evening wind. I walked from one end to the other, my eyes searching every passing face. Students hurried home with their bags slung over their shoulders. Office workers disappeared into crowded buses. An old man fed crumbs to a flock of pigeons near the river bank. Everyone seemed to belong somewhere.

Except the girl I was looking for...

I folded the note carefully and slipped it into my wallet without thinking. It was only a piece of paper, yet it suddenly felt too important to throw away. I didn't know why. Maybe because it was the only thing that connected me to a stranger whose silence had quietly become a part of my life.

The night sleep refused to visit me.

The words on the note echoed into my mind.

What did it mean?

Was it meant for me?

The questions lingered longer than the rain outside my window.

The next morning I woke up earlier than usual for the first time in years, I wasn't rushing because of college I was rushing because I wanted answer.

My footsteps quickened has I approached the bridge.

She would be there.

She had to be.

The place where she always stood was empty.

I waited.

5 minutes passed.

Then ten.

Every person who walked toward the bridge made my heartbeat a little faster only to slow again when it wasn't her.

For the first time, I understood how loudly hope could disappoint.

Just as I turned to leave, something caught my eyes.

Another white flower rested on the railing.

And beneath it...

Another note.

📝

The Echo Between us

The white flower rested quietly in my hand, has though it had been waiting for me all along.

Its petals were untouched by the morning rain, delicate enough to fall apart with a single careless touch. Tied to its stem was another folded note, secured with the same thin white thread.

For a moment I simply, stared at it.

The bridge was empty.

The river flowed beneath me, carrying away fallen leaves without ever looking back.

Slowly, I unfolded the note.

Only one sentence was written.

"Some strangers feel familiar because your heart has met theirs long before your eyes do."

I read it again.

And again

The handwriting was neat, almost effortless, as though every word had been written without hesitation.

I slept the note into my wallet beside the first one.

Two notes.

Two white flowers.

And still not even a name.

The next morning I reached the bridge 20 minutes earlier.

The sky had only begun to Brighton painting soft shades of orange across the clouds. The city was walking slowly, stretching itself into another ordinary day.

But my day no longer felt ordinary.

Every passing foot step made me turn around.

Every figure in the distant made my heart hope.

Then...

She appeared.

Walking calmly through the morning mist, she looked exactly as she always did, yet somehow different.

Perhaps it was because this time, I wasn't just seeing a stranger.

I was seeing the person who had quietly rewritten my mornings.

She didn't notice me.

Or perhaps she did and choose not to show it.

As always, she stopped beside the railing and look toward the river. The wind brushed against her hair, and for a few moments, neither of us moved.

The silence between us no longer felt empty.

My heartbeat refused to slow down.

I took one step.

Then another

By the time I reached her, every sentence I had practiced had disappeared.

All I could do was hold out the folded note.

"I think..." I said, my voice barely louder than the breeze. "...this belongs to you."

She looked at the note.

Then she looked that me.

A smile slowly found it's way on to her face -not the kind people where to be polite, but the kind that reaches the eyes before the lips.

"I was wondering she," said softly," how many mornings it would take before you spoke."

I blinked.

"You... Knew?"

She gave a tiny nod.

"I've seen you every day."

For a second, the entire City seemed to disappear.

There was no passing buses...

No hurried foot step...

No voices...

Only two strangers standing on the Old bridge, smiling as though they had finally found a conversation they had been carrying in silence for weeks.

"By the way,"I asked, gathering little courage I had left,"what's your name?"

"Names are easy to forget."

She turned and began walking toward the road.

After a few steps she turned back.

"But stories..."

She smiled.

"...stories are remembered forever."

The Conversation We Never Planned

The morning sun had just begun to paint the sky with shades of gold as she walked away from the bridge.

For a moment, I simply stood there, watching her disappear into crowd. The note was still in my hand, and the words she had spoken echoed in my mind.

"Stories are remembered forever."

I didn't know what made me to do it.

Perhaps it was curiosity.

Perhaps it was courage arriving a little too late.

Or... perhaps it was something I didn't have a name for.

Without thinking, I began walking behind her.

She wasn't walking fast. She moved as though she had nowhere to rush, noticing the little things every one else ignored-the sparrow pecking at crumbs on the roadside, the old women arranging the fresh flowers outside her shop, the gentle breeze carrying the scent of jasmine through the morning air.

A few steps later, she stopped.

Without turning around, she said,

"You've been following me for almost 2 minutes."

I froze

"I... wasn't following you."

"No?"

She slowly turned, a playful smile resting on her face.

"So this road suddenly become your favorite?"

I rubbed the back of my neck,

Embarrassed.

"Fine... maybe I was."

She laughed.

It wasn't loud

It wasn't dramatic.

It was light, warm, and honest

For some reason hearing her laugh felt like hearing a song I have forgotten I have loved.

We began walking again.

This time side by side.

The silence between us was not awkward this time.

I felt comfortable, as though it had been waiting for this conversation all along.

"So... "I finally asked, "if you are not going to tell your name, what am I supposed to call you?"

She pretended to think.

"Hmm..."

Then she looked at me.

"What do I look like?"

I smiled.

"Like someone who enjoys confusing people."

She laughed again.

"That's not a name."

"It suits you."

She folded her arm.

"And what if I don't like it?"

"Then you will have to tell me your real."

 She shook her head.

"Not today."

I sighed dramatically.

"Then I will call you… The girl on the bridge."

She covered her face for a second, trying not to laugh.

"That's the worst nickname I've ever heard."

"It'll do until you give me a better one."

She smiled.

"You're impossible."

"And yet your still walking beside me."

For a brief moment, neither of us spoke.

The morning breeze carried fallen leaves across the road

The city was awake now, but somehow it felt has though we were walking inside are own little world.

After a while she broke the silence.

"Can I ask you something."

"Go ahead."

'If you could keep only one sound in your life forever... what could it be?"

I didn't answer immediately.

Instead I listened.

Bicycle Bell.

Bird singing from a nearby tree.

The distance rumble of a train.

And the wind brushing softly through the leaves.

Finally, I said,

"Rain"

She tilted her head.

"why rain?"

"Because it never asks anyone to smile."

she looked at me for a long moment.

There was no laughter this time.

Only quiet understanding.

"Your different," she whispered

I smiled.

By the time we reached the college gate, the students had begun filling the campus with conversation and laughter.

She stopped walking.

"You asked for my name," she said softly.

I did.

She looked into my eyes with the same mysterious smile she had worn since the day I saw her on the bridge.

You'll know it.

She took one step backward.

"... when you are ready to keep it."

Before I could reply she turned and disappeared into the crowd once again.

And somehow...

Not knowing her name made me want to know her even more...
