A Marriage of Lies

Episode 1 — The Man Behind the Mask

Rain poured over the city, washing away the lights that shimmered across the towering skyscrapers.

To ordinary people, it was just another peaceful evening.

But beneath the city's polished surface...

Secrets breathed.

Power shifted.

And lives were bought and sold with a single command.

On the top floor of an isolated glass building, silence ruled the room.

A man stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, his hands resting casually in his pockets as he watched the rain blur the city below.

His tailored black suit fit him perfectly.

His posture was calm.

His face carried no emotion.

Only his eyes...

Cold.

Sharp.

Unreadable.

Behind him, nearly a dozen armed men waited without daring to speak.

No one interrupted his silence.

No one even breathed too loudly.

Finally

A knock echoed through the office.

"Come in."

The deep voice was quiet, yet every person in the room straightened instinctively.

The door opened.

A man in his forties entered and bowed his head respectfully.

"Boss."

The man at the window didn't turn around.

"What is it?"

"The shipment reached the port safely."

"Hm."

"There were... no casualties."

Another quiet hum.

The older man continued carefully.

"The meeting with the council begins in thirty minutes."

Still facing the rain, the boss replied,

"Cancel it."

The room froze.

The assistant blinked.

"Boss...?"

"I said..."

The man slowly turned around.

"...Cancel it."

His voice never rose.

It didn't need to.

One sentence from him carried more weight than shouting ever could.

"Understood."

No one questioned him again.

As everyone quietly left the office, only one man remained behind.

He was younger than the others, perhaps in his late twenties, wearing a charcoal-gray suit.

Unlike the rest, he wasn't afraid to speak.

"A meeting you've spent three months arranging..."

He folded his arms.

"...and you're canceling it because of a dinner invitation?"

The corner of the boss's lips lifted ever so slightly.

"You sound disappointed."

"I'm curious."

"So ask."

The younger man sighed.

"You've never mixed business with personal matters."

A brief silence followed.

Then the boss picked up a thin black invitation card lying on his desk.

Tonight.

Dinner.

Rahman Residence.

Hosted by Nawab Rahman.

His thumb traced the embossed golden lettering before he quietly spoke.

"This dinner..."

"...is business."

The younger man's expression hardened.

"So it's finally time."

The boss met his eyes.

"It should have happened years ago."

Without another word, he picked up his coat.

"Prepare the car."

"Yes, Boss."

As the younger man reached the door, he hesitated.

"Should I call you Boss tonight..."

"...or Mr. Zayan Mir?"

For the first time that evening...

A faint smile appeared.

"Tonight..."

"...I'm only Zayan Mir."

The door closed behind him.

The office returned to silence.

Across the city...

A completely different world existed.

The scent of freshly baked cookies drifted through a warm family home.

Soft laughter echoed from the kitchen.

"Mahnoor!"

A cheerful voice called from downstairs.

"Coming!"

Mahnoor hurried down the staircase, almost tripping over the edge of her long cardigan.

"Careful!" her mother laughed.

"I'm fine!"

She smiled sheepishly before wrapping her arms around her mother from behind.

"What are we making?"

"Cookies."

Mahnoor's eyes sparkled.

"My favorite!"

"I know."

She reached for a piece of chocolate.

Her mother gently tapped her hand.

"Not yet."

"But I'm only checking if it's sweet enough."

"You checked five times already."

Mahnoor giggled.

"I like quality control."

Before another chocolate chip could disappear, a playful voice interrupted.

"You're going to eat all the ingredients before they're baked."

Mahnoor turned around.

Her cousin, Hiba, leaned against the doorway with folded arms.

"I would never."

"You absolutely would."

"I would absolutely not."

"You hid cookies under your pillow when you were twelve."

Mahnoor gasped dramatically.

"That was one time."

"It was three."

Her mother couldn't help laughing.

"You two haven't changed at all."

Mahnoor shrugged innocently.

"I've become much more mature."

Hiba raised an eyebrow.

"Really?"

"Of course."

"What were you reading before coming downstairs?"

Mahnoor's smile disappeared.

"...Nothing."

"A romance novel?"

"...No."

"A wedding magazine?"

Mahnoor avoided her eyes.

"...Maybe."

Hiba burst into laughter.

"I knew it!"

Mahnoor covered her face.

"Stop teasing me!"

"You've dreamed about marriage since high school."

"That's not true."

"You literally made a list called 'Things My Future Husband Must Do.'"

Mahnoor quickly placed a hand over Hiba's mouth.

"Don't say that in front of Ammi!"

Too late.

Her mother had already heard.

"What list?"

Mahnoor groaned.

"There wasn't a list."

"There absolutely was."

Hiba counted on her fingers.

"Number one: He has to smile a lot."

Mahnoor's cheeks turned pink.

"Hiba..."

"Number two: He must remember anniversaries."

"Hiba!"

"Number three:"

"I'll throw flour at you!"

Both girls dissolved into laughter.

Even their mother shook her head with a smile.

"My daughter lives in her own little world."

Mahnoor hugged her mother's arm.

"What's wrong with believing in love?"

"Nothing."

Her mother brushed a strand of hair behind Mahnoor's ear.

"But remember, beta..."

"A marriage isn't built only on dreams."

Mahnoor tilted her head.

"I know."

"It's built on respect."

"And patience."

"And understanding."

Mahnoor nodded thoughtfully.

"I don't expect a prince."

"No?"

She smiled softly.

"I just hope... whoever becomes my husband..."

"...will become my best friend."

Her mother looked at her with gentle eyes.

"And if he isn't very expressive?"

"I'll wait."

"If he works too much?"

"I'll make him tea."

"If he forgets important dates?"

"I'll remind him."

"If he's quiet?"

"I'll talk enough for both of us."

Hiba laughed so hard she nearly dropped the mixing bowl.

"Poor future husband."

Mahnoor stuck out her tongue.

"He'll be lucky."

"Oh?"

"I'll bake him cookies."

"You'll eat them yourself."

"...Maybe half."

Their laughter filled the house.

None of them noticed Nawab Rahman standing quietly at the kitchen entrance.

A faint smile rested on his face as he watched his daughter.

She was still the same innocent girl who believed every problem could be solved with kindness.

For a brief moment...

Guilt flickered across his features.

Then it vanished.

He cleared his throat.

"Mahnoor."

She immediately turned toward him.

"Ji, Baba?"

"I need to speak with you."

His unusually serious tone made the room fall silent.

Mahnoor wiped the flour from her hands.

"Is everything alright?"

He looked at her for a long moment before answering.

"...Yes."

Then he added quietly,

"We're having important guests for dinner tonight."

Mahnoor smiled.

"I'll help Ammi prepare everything."

"Wear something presentable."

She blinked.

"That serious?"

A faint smile crossed his face.

"Very."

She nodded obediently.

"Okay, Baba."

As she walked upstairs to get ready, she couldn't shake the strange feeling in her chest.

She didn't know why.

But somehow...

It felt as if tonight would change her life forever.

Episode 2 — The Proposal

The Rahman mansion glowed beneath rows of warm golden lights.

Servants moved quietly through the halls, making sure every detail was perfect.

In the kitchen, Mahnoor placed the last dessert on a silver tray before stepping back with a satisfied smile.

"Done!"

Her mother looked at the table and nodded proudly.

"You've worked hard today."

Mahnoor smiled.

"I wanted everything to be perfect for Baba's guests."

Just then, the sound of several luxury cars stopping outside echoed through the house.

A servant hurried inside.

"Sir... the guests have arrived."

Nawab Rahman straightened his suit before walking toward the entrance.

Outside...

A convoy of black vehicles stood before the mansion.

The rear door of the center car slowly opened.

Polished black shoes touched the ground.

Then came a tall man dressed in an immaculate black suit.

His expression remained unreadable.

Without saying a word, he adjusted his cufflinks and looked at the mansion.

For a brief second...

His eyes hardened.

Then the emotion disappeared.

"Welcome, Mr. Zayan."

Nawab Rahman greeted him warmly.

"It's an honor to have you here."

"The honor is mine."

His voice was calm and respectful.

The two men shook hands before walking inside.

No one noticed the silent exchange between Zayan and the bodyguards positioned around the property.

He observed everything.

Every entrance.

Every exit.

Every security camera.

A habit he had never been able to abandon.

Upstairs...

Mahnoor stood before the mirror, smoothing the sleeves of her soft blue dress.

She rarely dressed up for guests.

Today felt different.

For reasons she couldn't explain.

Her cousin Hiba entered with a teasing smile.

"You look pretty."

Mahnoor laughed.

"It's just dinner."

"Mhm."

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Hiba..."

"I just think someone downstairs might be impressed."

Mahnoor rolled her eyes.

"They're Baba's business guests."

"Still..."

She leaned closer.

"...what if one of them is handsome?"

Mahnoor covered her burning cheeks.

"You watch too many dramas."

"And you read too many romance novels."

"I do not."

"You literally cried because the hero proposed in chapter thirty."

"I was emotional!"

"You were dramatic."

Both girls laughed.

A servant knocked on the door.

"Miss Mahnoor... Sir has asked everyone to come downstairs."

The drawing room was filled with polite conversation.

Mahnoor followed her mother inside with her gaze lowered.

"Assalamu Alaikum."

"Wa Alaikum Assalam."

She greeted everyone softly.

Only after taking her seat did she look up.

Across the room...

A man in a black suit sat beside her father.

He wasn't speaking.

He wasn't smiling.

He simply observed everything with quiet confidence.

Their eyes met.

Mahnoor immediately looked away.

"Why does he seem so... distant?"

She couldn't explain it.

There was something about him that made the room feel colder.

Dinner passed peacefully.

Business conversations filled most of the evening.

Mahnoor quietly served tea and dinner whenever needed.

As she placed a teacup before Zayan, her fingers slipped slightly.

The spoon clinked against the saucer.

"I'm... sorry."

She expected annoyance.

Instead...

"It's alright."

Two simple words.

His voice remained calm.

She looked at him in surprise.

"...Thank you."

He only nodded.

Nothing more.

After dinner, everyone returned to the drawing room.

The atmosphere suddenly became unusually serious.

Nawab Rahman placed his teacup on the table.

"There is something important I'd like to discuss."

The room fell silent.

Mahnoor looked curiously at her father.

He turned toward Zayan.

"I've known Mr. Zayan for quite some time now."

Zayan remained silent.

"I respect his character, his values, and the way he carries himself."

Mahnoor blinked.

Where was this conversation going?

Then her father looked at her.

"Mahnoor."

"Ji, Baba?"

"I believe..."

He paused.

"...that it's time I fulfilled one of my responsibilities as a father."

Her heartbeat quickened.

"I would like..."

"...to ask for your hand in marriage."

Everything around her seemed to stop.

Marriage?

She looked at her mother in shock.

Her mother offered only a gentle, reassuring smile.

Mahnoor slowly turned toward Zayan.

He sat exactly as before.

Calm.

Composed.

Almost as if he had expected this moment all along.

Not once had surprise crossed his face.

Not once had he looked uncertain.

His expression remained impossible to read.

Nawab Rahman broke the silence.

"Of course, I won't force my daughter."

He smiled gently at Mahnoor.

"Take your time, beta."

Mahnoor lowered her eyes.

Her heart pounded so loudly she could barely hear anything else.

Marriage had always been a beautiful dream.

But dreams felt very different...

...when they suddenly became reality.

She stole one final glance toward Zayan.

For just a second...

She thought she saw sadness hidden behind his cold eyes.

The feeling disappeared before she could be sure.

Outside, thunder rumbled across the dark sky.

Inside...

A single question lingered in the air.

Episode 3 — Yes

Silence settled over the drawing room.

Mahnoor's fingers tightened around the edge of her dupatta.

Marriage...

The word echoed inside her mind.

She had always imagined this moment.

Just not like this.

Her mother gently placed a hand over hers.

"If you'd like," she said softly, "you can think about it first."

Mahnoor nodded faintly.

Nawab Rahman looked toward Zayan.

"Would you mind if I spoke to my daughter alone?"

"Of course."

Zayan stood from his seat.

"I'll wait."

His calm voice revealed nothing.

He walked toward the balcony overlooking the garden, leaving the family behind.

---

A few minutes later...

Mahnoor sat beside her father in his study.

The room smelled of old books and sandalwood.

Nawab Rahman removed his glasses and looked at his daughter with unusual gentleness.

"I've never forced you to make a decision."

"I know, Baba."

"If you don't want this marriage..."

"I'll refuse it."

Mahnoor looked at him in surprise.

"You would?"

A small smile appeared on his face.

"Your happiness comes before everything."

She lowered her eyes.

"Can I ask you something?"

"You can ask me anything."

"Do you trust him?"

Without hesitation...

"Yes."

"Will he respect me?"

"I believe he will."

She hesitated before asking one last question.

"Did... he agree to this marriage himself?"

Her father nodded.

"He did."

Mahnoor fell silent.

She wasn't deeply in love.

She barely knew the man.

But she trusted her father.

And somewhere in her heart...

She believed love could grow after marriage.

A small smile touched her lips.

"I trust your choice, Baba."

Nawab Rahman's eyes softened.

"So..."

"Is that a yes?"

Mahnoor shyly nodded.

"...Yes."

Her mother embraced her immediately.

"My little girl..."

Mahnoor hid her face against her mother's shoulder, laughing nervously.

"I never thought I'd say yes this quickly."

Her mother smiled through misty eyes.

"Sometimes life chooses for us."

---

Meanwhile...

Zayan stood alone on the balcony.

Rain dripped from the marble roof onto the garden below.

His expression remained unreadable.

Footsteps approached.

His trusted right-hand man, Sameer, quietly stopped beside him.

"Boss."

"Hm."

"If she refuses..."

"She won't."

"You sound certain."

"I am."

Sameer glanced toward the brightly lit windows of the mansion.

"Do you ever wonder if she's innocent?"

Zayan's jaw tightened.

"Innocent?"

He let out a humorless laugh.

"She's Nawab Rahman's daughter."

"That doesn't answer my question."

A dangerous silence followed.

Finally...

"My mission isn't about her."

"It's about her father."

Sameer said nothing more.

He had served Kaizar Shah for years.

He knew better than to argue.

Still...

For the first time...

He wondered if this revenge would destroy more than one family.

---

The study door opened.

Mahnoor and her parents walked back into the drawing room.

Her cheeks were pink with embarrassment.

She couldn't bring herself to look at anyone.

Nawab Rahman smiled warmly.

"Mr. Zayan."

Zayan turned.

"My daughter has made her decision."

The room held its breath.

Mahnoor slowly lifted her gaze.

For the first time...

She looked directly into his eyes.

They were calm.

Dark.

Impossible to understand.

She lowered her gaze once more and whispered,

"...I agree."

A quiet smile spread across the elders' faces.

Congratulations filled the room.

Prayers were offered.

Mahnoor could barely process what had happened.

She was engaged.

Just like that.

While everyone exchanged greetings, she gathered the courage to glance toward the man who would soon become her husband.

He acknowledged everyone's congratulations politely.

But when his eyes met hers...

He only gave a slight nod.

No smile.

No warmth.

Nothing.

It stung more than she expected.

Perhaps...

He was simply a reserved man.

She smiled to herself.

"It's alright," she thought.

"One day... I'll make him smile."

She didn't know...

That the man she had just accepted as her future husband...

Was hiding behind a false name.

And she certainly didn't know...

That long before she had whispered "yes"...

He had already declared war on her family.

Outside...

The rain grew heavier.

As if the sky itself mourned a future no one inside the mansion could yet see.
