Chapter 1: The Blood Moon Awakens (Part 1)
The villagers of Black Pine had one rule that no one dared to break.
Never enter the forest on the night of the Blood Moon.
The elders claimed the moon awakened ancient wolves, spirits, and curses that had slept for centuries. Children grew up listening to stories of travelers who disappeared without a trace after wandering beneath its crimson light.
Most people believed the tales.
Lyra Hart did not.
She adjusted the worn basket on her shoulder and hurried along the narrow dirt path that cut through the edge of the forest. The evening breeze carried the scent of pine needles and damp earth, and somewhere in the distance an owl called into the fading light.
The sky was changing.
Golden sunset melted into deep shades of purple, while the full moon slowly climbed above the trees. Tonight it looked different—larger than usual, with a faint red glow that seemed to pulse like a heartbeat.
Lyra pulled her gray cloak tighter around herself.
"I should have left earlier," she whispered.
She had spent the afternoon gathering healing herbs for Mrs. Elora, the elderly healer who had raised her after her parents disappeared eighteen years ago.
No one knew what had happened to them.
Some said they had been killed by rogues.
Others believed they had abandoned their daughter.
Lyra had stopped asking years ago. The answers only changed depending on who was telling the story.
A sharp snap echoed from the trees.
She froze.
"Probably a rabbit," she muttered, trying to calm herself.
Still, she couldn't shake the strange feeling that someone was watching her.
She walked faster.
As the first crimson light from the Blood Moon touched the forest floor, every sound suddenly disappeared.
No birds.
No insects.
Not even the wind.
Silence.
A cold shiver ran down Lyra's spine.
Then she heard it.
A howl.
Long.
Deep.
Powerful.
Another answered it from somewhere farther away.
Then another.
Within seconds the forest seemed alive with wolves calling to one another.
Her heart pounded.
She broke into a run.
Branches brushed against her cloak as she hurried toward the village gate, but after several minutes she realized something was wrong.
The path had changed.
She was certain there had never been an enormous twisted oak standing in front of her.
She turned around.
The path behind her had vanished.
Only trees remained.
"No..."
Her breathing became uneven.
"I've walked this road hundreds of times."
Another twig snapped behind her.
Slowly she turned.
Three enormous wolves stepped out of the darkness.
Their fur was stained with mud, their yellow eyes glowed with hunger, and scars covered their bodies.
Rogues.
Every werewolf child learned to fear rogues.
Without a pack or an Alpha to guide them, they lived only for power, revenge, and blood.
The largest wolf transformed first.
Bones shifted beneath his skin as he stood upright, becoming a broad-shouldered man with rough dark hair and a cruel smile.
The other two followed.
"Well," the leader said with a grin. "What do we have here?"
Lyra took a cautious step backward.
"I don't want any trouble."
He laughed.
"That's funny."
His companions circled around her.
"The famous Moonless girl," one of them sneered.
"I've heard stories."
"The girl with no wolf."
"The one abandoned by fate."
Heat rose to Lyra's cheeks.
She hated that name.
Moonless.
The word had followed her her entire life.
Every werewolf in Black Pine discovered their wolf before adulthood.
Everyone except her.
She had trained.
She had waited.
She had prayed beneath every full moon.
Nothing had happened.
Eventually the pack stopped expecting anything from her.
Some pitied her.
Others mocked her.
Lyra lifted her chin.
"I'm leaving."
The leader stepped into her path.
"I don't think so."
He leaned closer, studying her face.
"Our Alpha has been searching for something very interesting."
His smile widened.
"And I think we've just found it."
Lyra's pulse quickened.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Oh, you will."
The rogue reached toward her wrist.
Instinct took over.
She shoved him backward and turned to run.
She barely made it three steps before another rogue blocked her path.
The leader chuckled behind her.
"You're surrounded."
Lyra looked from one rogue to another, searching desperately for an escape.
There wasn't one.
Above the treetops, the Blood Moon glowed brighter.
For a brief moment, an icy breeze swept through the forest.
Every rogue suddenly stopped smiling.
They lifted their heads toward the darkness beyond the trees.
One of them whispered, his voice trembling.
"Alpha..."
The air itself seemed to grow heavier.
Footsteps echoed through the forest.
Slow.
Steady.
Powerful.
Someone was coming.
Chapter 2: The Alpha in the Shadows
The footsteps grew louder.
Each one echoed through the silent forest like distant thunder.
The rogues stiffened, their confident smiles disappearing. Even the leader took an uneasy step backward.
A powerful scent filled the air—pine, rain, and something ancient.
Then a voice broke the silence.
"Leave."
It wasn't shouted.
It didn't need to be.
The single word carried so much authority that the trees themselves seemed to tremble.
From the darkness emerged a massive black wolf. His fur shimmered beneath the Blood Moon, and his silver eyes glowed with quiet power. He was larger than any wolf Lyra had ever seen.
The rogue leader swallowed hard.
"Alpha Kael..."
The black wolf stared at the rogues without a sound.
A low growl rumbled from his chest.
The forest shook.
Birds burst from the trees, and the rogues instinctively lowered their heads.
"You were warned," Kael said after shifting into his human form.
He was tall, with dark hair that brushed his forehead and piercing silver eyes that never left the rogues. A long black coat rested over his broad shoulders, marked with the crest of the Shadow Moon Pack.
"You crossed into my territory."
The rogue leader tried to smile.
"We were only passing through."
Kael's expression remained cold.
"You were hunting."
Silence.
"I don't repeat myself."
The rogues exchanged nervous glances before turning and disappearing into the forest.
Within seconds they were gone.
Only Lyra and the mysterious Alpha remained.
For the first time, Kael looked directly at her.
His calm expression changed.
Shock flashed across his face.
"No..."
He took one slow step closer.
"It can't be."
Lyra instinctively backed away.
"Who are you?"
Instead of answering, Kael stared at the crescent-shaped birthmark on her wrist.
His breathing became uneven.
"The Moon Mark..."
"You know what this is?" Lyra asked.
Before he could answer, the mark suddenly began to glow with soft silver light.
Pain shot through her arm.
She cried out and fell to one knee.
The light spread across her wrist like delicate vines before fading just as quickly.
Kael knelt beside her.
"Does it hurt?"
"It... it burned."
He gently helped her stand.
"You need to come with me."
"I'm not going anywhere with a stranger."
A faint smile appeared on his face for the first time.
"That's a brave answer."
"But if you stay here, the rogues will return."
Lyra hesitated.
Everything about him told her to be cautious.
Yet something deep inside whispered that she could trust him.
"Where would we go?" she asked quietly.
"My pack."
"The Shadow Moon Pack?"
Kael nodded.
"They've been searching for someone with your mark for nearly twenty years."
Lyra frowned.
"Why?"
Kael looked toward the Blood Moon.
"Because the last person to bear it disappeared the night the Moon Kingdom fell."
His voice grew softer.
"And I believe that person was your mother."
Lyra's heart stopped.
"My... mother?"
Before Kael could explain, a deafening howl echoed across the mountains.
Not one wolf.
Hundreds.
Kael's face hardened.
"They found us."
A scout burst from the trees and dropped to one knee.
"Alpha! The Crimson Fang Pack has crossed the border. They're heading this way."
Kael turned toward the distant howls.
"They're too early."
Then he looked back at Lyra.
"The war has begun."
Without another word, he held out his hand.
"If you want answers about your parents, you must trust me now."
Lyra stared at his hand.
Behind her, the howls grew closer.
Ahead of her stood the only person who seemed to know the truth about her past.
Taking a deep breath, she reached out.
The moment their hands touched, a brilliant silver light burst from the Moon Mark, lighting up the entire forest.
Far away, hidden beneath the ruins of an ancient castle, a pair of glowing crimson eyes slowly opened.
"They've found the heir," a dark voice whispered.
"Bring her to me... alive."
Chapter 3: The Shadow Moon Pack (Part 1)
The silver light faded as quickly as it had appeared.
Lyra blinked against the darkness, her heart pounding so loudly she could barely hear the distant howls echoing through the forest. The warmth from Kael's hand lingered on her skin, and the glowing mark on her wrist slowly returned to its ordinary pale color.
Kael released her hand and looked toward the northern hills.
"We have to move."
His voice was calm, but there was an urgency beneath it.
The scout who had arrived moments earlier shifted nervously. "Alpha, the Crimson Fang warriors are moving faster than expected."
Kael nodded once.
"Gather the border guards. Tell Beta Rowan to secure the eastern entrance. No one enters the Shadow Moon Pack territory without my permission."
"Yes, Alpha."
The scout disappeared into the trees.
Lyra stared after him.
"You didn't even ask his name."
Kael glanced at her.
"I didn't need to."
"You trust him that much?"
"I trust the wolves who have proven themselves."
His answer was simple, but it carried years of experience.
Lyra followed him through the forest in silence. The trees grew taller with every step, their branches weaving together until they nearly hid the moon. Strange silver flowers bloomed along the path, glowing softly as if they were drinking in the moonlight.
"I've never seen these before," she whispered.
"They only grow in Shadow Moon territory."
She reached toward one of the flowers.
"Careful."
She froze.
"It only blooms for wolves accepted by the pack," Kael explained. "Others find it beautiful. To enemies... it's poisonous."
Lyra slowly pulled her hand back.
"This place is different."
"It has been protected for generations."
For nearly an hour they walked through the forest without another word.
Finally, the trees opened.
Lyra stopped in amazement.
Spread across a wide valley was the largest werewolf settlement she had ever imagined.
Stone houses stood beneath towering pine trees, warm lights glowing from their windows. Children laughed as they chased one another through the streets. Warriors trained in a large courtyard, their wooden swords clashing with sharp cracks. Beyond them stood a magnificent stone mansion overlooking the entire valley.
Its tall towers stretched toward the moon.
"That's..."
"My home," Kael finished.
Lyra could hardly breathe.
"So this is the Shadow Moon Pack."
She had heard stories her entire life.
The strongest pack.
The oldest Alpha bloodline.
The wolves who had never lost a war.
Yet none of the stories had prepared her for what she was seeing.
As Kael led her toward the gates, every conversation stopped.
Dozens of eyes turned toward them.
Some wolves bowed respectfully to their Alpha.
Others stared openly at Lyra.
"Who is she?"
"She's human..."
"No... look at her wrist."
"The Moon Mark..."
The whispers spread through the crowd like wildfire.
An elderly woman gasped, dropping the basket she had been carrying.
"It can't be."
A young warrior stepped back in disbelief.
"The prophecy..."
Lyra lowered her eyes, suddenly uncomfortable beneath so many curious stares.
Kael sensed her unease.
Without saying a word, he stepped slightly closer to her, silently placing himself between Lyra and the crowd.
The simple gesture did not go unnoticed.
The whispers became louder.
"Did the Alpha just protect her?"
"Who is this girl?"
Before anyone could ask another question, a tall man with ash-brown hair pushed through the crowd.
He wore dark leather armor marked with the symbol of a silver wolf.
Unlike the others, he did not bow.
"You're late," he said, folding his arms.
Kael's expression remained unreadable.
"There were complications."
The man's gaze shifted to Lyra.
His green eyes narrowed.
"So she's the reason."
"You know about her?" Lyra asked.
He ignored the question.
Instead, he looked directly at Kael.
"Is this wise?"
Kael answered without hesitation.
"I didn't bring her here because it was easy."
"I brought her here because it was necessary."
The man's jaw tightened.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Finally, he sighed.
"I hope you're right."
Kael turned to Lyra.
"This is Rowan."
"My Beta."
Rowan gave a short nod.
"Welcome to Shadow Moon."
His tone was polite...
But his eyes were full of suspicion.
Lyra couldn't shake the feeling that although the Alpha trusted her...
His Beta did not.
