Chapter 1 – The Mafia Queen

Rain hammered against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Moretti headquarters, turning the city lights into blurred streaks of gold and white.

On the top floor, silence ruled.

A woman stood with her hands behind her back, staring over the sleeping city. She was tall, nearly six feet, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit. Her long black hair was tied neatly, and her sharp gray eyes reflected nothing—not anger, not joy, not fear.

Only cold authority.

This was Valentina Moretti, thirty-five years old.

To the world, she was the CEO of the Moretti Group.

To those who knew the truth, she was the ruthless queen of the Moretti Mafia.

One mistake.

One betrayal.

One lie.

Those were things Valentina never forgave.

A knock echoed through the office.

"Come in."

The heavy doors opened.

Isabella, her loyal right-hand woman, stepped inside and bowed slightly.

"The shipment arrived safely, Boss."

Valentina didn't turn.

"And the traitor?"

Isabella hesitated.

"He confessed."

Valentina finally looked over her shoulder.

"Did he?"

"Yes."

"And?"

"He begged for mercy."

Valentina's expression remained unreadable.

"Mercy isn't part of this organization."

Isabella nodded.

"I understand."

Within minutes, the order was carried out. No one questioned her decisions. In the Moretti family, loyalty was rewarded.

Betrayal was not.

Across the city...

Morning sunlight spilled across the campus of Riverside College.

Students laughed, hurried to classes, and filled the air with excitement.

Among them walked Aanya Sharma, twenty years old, carrying a backpack that looked almost too heavy for her.

She smiled as she greeted friends.

"Morning, Riya!"

"Morning!" Riya waved. "You're early again."

"I have an art project due today."

"You actually enjoy studying."

Aanya laughed.

"Someone has to."

She had no idea that, in another part of the city, a woman ruled an empire built on secrets and fear.

Their worlds couldn't have been more different.

One belonged to darkness.

The other to sunlight.

Later that evening...

Aanya stayed late at the library.

By the time she left, the streets were nearly empty.

As she walked home, she noticed a black luxury car parked under a flickering streetlight.

The rear door opened.

A tall woman stepped out.

Black suit.

Cold eyes.

Unshakable confidence.

For just a moment, their eyes met.

Neither spoke.

Valentina glanced at the young college student before turning away as if she were just another stranger.

"A waste of time," she said quietly to Isabella.

They entered the car, and it disappeared into the night.

Aanya blinked.

"What a strange woman..."

She shrugged and continued home, unaware that this brief encounter would become the beginning of a story that would change both of their lives forever.

A Chance Encounter

The next morning, Riverside College buzzed with its usual energy.

Aanya Sharma hurried across campus with a cup of coffee in one hand and a stack of books in the other.

"Slow down!" her best friend, Riya, called after her.

"I'm already late!" Aanya laughed without looking back.

That was her mistake.

She bumped into a tall stranger entering the campus gate. The books slipped from her hands and scattered across the ground.

"Oh! I'm so sorry!" Aanya quickly knelt to gather them.

The stranger crouched and silently picked up one of the books. Her black leather gloves contrasted with the colorful college textbook.

Aanya looked up.

Her breath caught.

It was the same woman she had seen the previous night.

The woman wore a tailored black suit, her expression as cold and unreadable as before. Two bodyguards stood a few steps behind her.

"Your book," the woman said in a calm, emotionless voice, handing it over.

"Th-thank you..."

Without another word, the woman turned to leave.

"Wait!" Aanya called.

The woman paused but didn't look back.

"I... I never got to thank you for helping me yesterday."

"You don't know me," the woman replied. "Don't speak to strangers so easily."

Then she walked away.

Aanya watched the black SUV disappear through the college gates.

"Who is she?" she whispered.

Meanwhile...

Inside the SUV, Isabella glanced at Valentina.

"You could have ignored her."

"I know."

"Then why stop?"

Valentina looked out the window.

"She was in my way."

Isabella raised an eyebrow. She had worked beside Valentina for twelve years and knew that answer wasn't the whole truth.

Before she could ask another question, Valentina's phone rang.

Marco Leone.

Their biggest rival.

Valentina answered.

"What do you want?"

Marco chuckled. "Still as cold as ever."

"I don't have time for games."

"Then listen carefully. Someone close to you is going to disappear."

The line went dead.

The warmth inside the car vanished.

Valentina's expression hardened.

"Find out everything," she ordered.

"Immediately, Boss," Isabella replied.

That evening, Aanya left college alone after finishing an art project.

As she walked through a quiet side street, she heard hurried footsteps behind her.

Three men emerged from the shadows.

"Hand over your bag," one demanded.

Aanya stepped back.

"I... I don't have much money."

One of the men grabbed her wrist.

Before she could scream—

A black SUV screeched to a halt.

The rear door opened.

Valentina stepped out.

Her icy gaze swept over the three men.

"Let her go."

The men laughed.

"And who are you?"

Valentina didn't answer.

Within seconds, her bodyguards had surrounded them.

The laughter disappeared.

The men fled into the darkness without looking back.

Silence returned.

Aanya looked at the woman who had appeared twice in two days.

"Thank you... again."

Valentina studied her for a moment.

"You need to stop walking alone at night."

"I'll... remember that."

Valentina gave a single nod and turned toward the SUV.

As the vehicle drove away, Aanya couldn't shake the feeling that this mysterious, cold woman was hiding a dangerous secret.

And for the first time in years...

Valentina found herself thinking about someone who had nothing to do with the mafia.

The Fearless Girl

The city was quiet after the attempted robbery.

Aanya stood on the sidewalk, watching the black SUV disappear into the night. The woman inside hadn't even waited for a proper thank-you.

"She's so... strange," Aanya murmured.

The next morning, the Moretti headquarters was as cold and disciplined as ever.

Valentina sat at the head of a long conference table while her captains reported on the family's businesses.

"No mistakes," she said in a calm but commanding voice. "Our rivals are watching every move we make."

Everyone nodded.

No one dared argue.

After the meeting, Isabella stepped closer.

"The three men from last night weren't ordinary thieves."

Valentina looked up.

"They work for Marco Leone."

"So it wasn't a random robbery?"

"No."

Valentina's eyes narrowed.

"Find out why they were following that college student."

"Yes, Boss."

At Riverside College, life carried on as usual.

Riya nudged Aanya during lunch.

"You're distracted."

"I keep thinking about that woman."

"The one with the black SUV?"

Aanya nodded.

"She's scary... but she saved me twice."

Riya sighed dramatically.

"Maybe she's secretly a movie star."

Aanya laughed.

"I don't think movie stars travel with bodyguards."

That evening, Aanya stopped at a small neighborhood café after class.

As she waited for her coffee, the café door opened.

The same tall woman walked inside.

She was dressed in a black suit again, followed by a single bodyguard who remained outside.

Their eyes met.

Valentina walked to the counter without acknowledging anyone else.

The cashier smiled nervously.

"Your usual espresso, ma'am?"

"Yes."

When the cashier handed over the drink, he accidentally dropped several coins onto the floor.

He froze.

"I-I'm sorry..."

Valentina simply bent down, picked up the coins, and placed them back on the counter.

"Be more careful next time."

Her voice was cold, but she didn't raise it.

Aanya watched the scene with surprise.

She's strict... but she isn't cruel to everyone.

Gathering her courage, Aanya walked over.

"Hello."

Valentina looked at her with an unreadable expression.

"You again."

"I just wanted to thank you properly."

"There is no need."

"There is."

Aanya smiled warmly.

"You helped me."

For the first time in years, someone smiled at Valentina without fear, without wanting anything in return.

Valentina didn't know how to respond.

Instead, she said, "Don't mistake kindness for familiarity."

"I won't," Aanya replied. "But I still think you're a good person."

Those words lingered in the silence.

A good person.

No one had called Valentina that in a very long time.

She turned and walked out of the café without another word.

Outside, Isabella was waiting beside the SUV.

"You were inside longer than usual."

Valentina opened the car door.

"The coffee was slow."

Isabella glanced toward the café window, where Aanya was watching them leave.

A faint smile tugged at Isabella's lips.

She knew her boss well enough to notice something had changed, even if Valentina herself refused to admit it.

As the SUV disappeared into the evening traffic, Valentina found herself remembering Aanya's words.

"I still think you're a good person."

For the first time in years, the ruthless Mafia Queen wondered whether anyone could truly see beyond the blood on her hands.
