Married To My Worst Enemy

Chapter 1: The Girl Everyone Loved to Mock

Lily Carter woke up to the soft glow of morning light slipping through her curtains.

For a moment, she just lay there, listening to the quiet hum of the house. The distant sound of birds outside. The faint clatter of dishes from downstairs. A normal morning. A safe morning.

She pushed herself up slowly, her curls falling around her face as she sat on the edge of her bed. Lily wasn’t the kind of girl who blended in easily. She was chubby in a way that made people notice her first, but there was a softness and curve to her frame that suited her age, even if she never felt like it belonged in a place like Westbridge High.

Still, she got up anyway.

Because she always did.

Downstairs, the smell of breakfast wrapped around her like a warm blanket.

“Morning, sweetheart,” her mother called from the kitchen.

Lily’s mom stood at the stove, flipping pancakes with practiced ease. Her hair was tied back, and she already had a small plate set aside just for Lily—extra syrup, fruit on the side, exactly how she liked it.

Her father sat at the table scrolling through his phone, but he looked up the moment Lily entered.

“There she is,” he said with a smile. “Our early bird.”

Lily gave a small, tired smile in return. “Morning.”

Her mom turned slightly, eyes softening as she looked at her daughter. “You’ve got a big day today, don’t you?”

Lily hesitated before nodding. “Chemistry test… and practice after school.”

“You’ll do fine,” her father said immediately, like there was no other possibility. “You always do.”

Her mom placed a plate of pancakes in front of her and gently brushed a curl away from Lily’s face.

“And don’t let anyone make you feel small today,” she added quietly, almost like she had said it before. “You hear me?”

Lily nodded again, her expression steadying.

“I won’t,” she said firmly.

“That’s all we ask,” her mom replied with a reassuring smile.

Breakfast passed in a familiar rhythm—warm food, soft encouragement, and the kind of love that tried its best to shield her from a world that didn’t always care.

But eventually, the clock pushed her forward.

Lily grabbed her backpack, hugged her mom quickly, and waved at her dad before stepping out into the morning air.

Westbridge High loomed ahead like it always did—loud, bright, and unforgiving.

Students filled the sidewalks in clusters, laughing too loudly, moving too fast, living lives that never seemed to slow down for anyone like her.

Lily adjusted the strap of her backpack and let out a quiet breath.

“Just one more year,” she whispered to herself. “I can survive one more year.”

She kept her head down as she walked through the gates.

It never helped.

“There she is.”

The voice cut through the noise like it always did.

Lily’s stomach tightened before she even looked up.

A group of students stood near the fountain, already watching her. Smirks forming. Phones ready. Anticipation building like they had been waiting just for this moment.

Jason Blake.

The school’s golden boy.

Captain of the basketball team. Rich. Popular. Untouchable.

And the person who made her mornings feel heavier than they should.

He leaned against his black sports car like he owned the entire parking lot, spinning his keys around his finger. His friends laughed before he even spoke again.

“Morning, Carter,” Jason called out, loud enough for everyone nearby to hear. His eyes flicked over her. “Did you dress in the dark again, or is that just your style now?”

A few students snickered.

Lily lifted her chin slightly, her voice calm and steady. “I dressed just fine. You’re just bored.”

The crowd went a little quieter for a second—like they weren’t used to that.

Jason blinked, then let out a short laugh. “Oh? She talks back now.”

Lily didn’t stop walking.

“Hey!” Jason called after her. “Didn’t your parents teach you manners? Or do you just ignore everyone who talks to you?”

She stopped for half a second.

Then turned her head just enough for him to see her expression.

“I hear you,” she said evenly. “I just don’t take you seriously.”

That got a reaction—laughter, louder this time, but also a few surprised looks.

Jason stepped in front of her, blocking her path like it was nothing. Like she was nothing.

“So you can talk,” he said, amused.

His friends circled slightly, like they were watching a performance they had seen too many times but still enjoyed.

Lily tightened her grip on her backpack straps.

“Please move,” she said, unshaken.

Jason studied her for a moment, then tilted his head.

“You know,” he said slowly, “if you tried smiling once in a while, people might actually think you’re normal.”

Laughter erupted around them.

Lily didn’t flinch.

“I am normal,” she said coolly. “You’re just loud.”

The laughter faltered again, a few students exchanging looks.

She shifted to step around him, but someone bumped her shoulder from behind.

Her books slipped from her hands.

They hit the ground hard.

The hallway seemed to explode with noise.

Laughter. Phones lifting. Whispers spreading.

A notebook slid across the pavement and landed near a puddle from last night’s rain.

Lily dropped to her knees quickly, gathering her things before the bell.

No one helped.

No one ever did.

“Careful,” someone mocked softly.

Jason looked down at the mess. For a split second, his expression changed—something unreadable flickering behind his eyes.

Then it was gone.

He smirked again.

“Maybe you should pay more attention,” he said.

Lily picked up her soaked notebook, hands steady now despite the damage. The ink was already bleeding through the pages. Weeks of notes ruined in seconds.

She closed her eyes briefly.

Breathe.

Just breathe.

“I’ve handled worse,” she said quietly, more to herself than anyone else.

She stood, gathered what was left, and walked away without looking back.

The laughter slowly faded behind her.

Jason stayed where he was, watching her disappear into the building.

One of his friends nudged him.

“Why do you always go after her, man?”

Jason shrugged, slipping his hands into his pockets.

“She’s just easy to mess with,” he said casually.

But even as he said it, his eyes stayed on the hallway she had vanished into.

And for a moment longer than he liked, he didn’t look away.

Neither of them knew it yet.

But by the end of the year, everything between them would change.

And the girl he treated like she didn’t matter…

Would become the one person he could never ignore again.

Chapter 2: The Prank That Went Too Far

By lunchtime, everyone had already forgotten about the scene in the courtyard.

Everyone except Lily.

She sat alone beneath the old oak tree behind the school library, carefully drying the pages of her chemistry notebook with tissues from her bag. Most of the ink had bled into blue smudges.

She sighed.

"So much for studying."

"Lily?"

She looked up to see Emily Carter hurrying toward her with two juice boxes and a warm smile.

"There you are! I've been looking everywhere."

Emily dropped onto the grass beside her and handed her one of the drinks.

"I heard what happened this morning."

Lily forced a smile.

"It's nothing."

Emily frowned.

"It stopped being 'nothing' a long time ago."

Lily stared down at her notebook.

"I don't want to give them the satisfaction of seeing me cry."

Emily reached over and squeezed her hand.

"One day, Jason Blake is going to regret everything he's done."

Lily let out a quiet laugh.

"I doubt someone like him even knows what regret feels like."

---

Across campus, Jason sat with his friends in the cafeteria.

The basketball team occupied their usual table, laughing loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"So..." Mason grinned. "Carter actually answered you today."

Jason shrugged while spinning a basketball on one finger.

"She finally found her voice."

"I liked it," another teammate admitted. "She almost embarrassed you."

Jason caught the basketball with one hand.

"Almost."

His smirk returned.

"Maybe she needs another reminder of her place."

The boys exchanged mischievous looks.

"What are you planning?" Mason asked.

Jason's eyes wandered toward the cafeteria entrance just as Lily and Emily walked inside.

An idea formed instantly.

---

The final bell rang an hour later.

Students flooded the hallways toward their lockers.

Lily packed her books slowly, waiting for the crowd to thin out before heading home.

As she reached her locker, she noticed something strange.

A small white envelope had been taped to the door.

Curious, she peeled it off.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Meet me in the auditorium after school. I need to tell you something important. Please come alone.

There was no signature.

Emily glanced over her shoulder.

"Who's it from?"

"I... don't know."

Emily narrowed her eyes.

"It could be a prank."

"Maybe."

"But what if it isn't?"

Lily hesitated.

After everything she'd been through, she still wanted to believe people could surprise her.

"I'll just look," she said.

"If nobody's there, I'll leave."

Emily sighed.

"I'll wait outside for you."

---

The auditorium was almost completely dark.

Only a few lights near the stage were switched on.

Lily stepped inside cautiously.

"Hello?"

Her voice echoed through the empty room.

No answer.

She took another step.

Still nothing.

"Is anyone here?"

Suddenly—

The stage lights blazed on.

A loud burst of music filled the room.

Confetti cannons exploded from both sides.

The curtains flew open.

Dozens of students emerged from behind them, laughing hysterically.

In the center of the stage stood Jason Blake.

Holding a bouquet of fake flowers.

He dropped dramatically to one knee.

"Lily Carter!" he shouted into a microphone.

The entire auditorium erupted with laughter.

"Will you do me the unbelievable honor of becoming the ugliest girlfriend in school?"

More laughter.

Phones shot into the air.

Someone yelled, "Say yes!"

Another shouted, "She's actually blushing!"

Lily stood frozen.

Her face burned with humiliation as hundreds of camera flashes lit up the room.

Jason extended the bouquet with a mocking grin.

"So... what do you say?"

For several seconds, the room was silent except for the snickers.

Then Lily slowly walked toward him.

Jason smiled, expecting tears.

Instead...

She took the bouquet from his hand.

Everyone leaned forward.

Without saying a word, Lily tore the flowers in half.

The petals scattered across the stage.

She looked Jason straight in the eyes.

"This is why no one will ever truly respect you."

The smile vanished from Jason's face.

The auditorium fell completely silent.

Before anyone could react—

A loud crash echoed from backstage.

One of the heavy lighting rigs snapped loose from the ceiling.

It came hurtling straight toward the stage...

...and toward Lily.

To Be Continued...

Chapter 3: The Hero No One Expected

The scream came before anyone could move.

"Lily!"

The metal lighting rig crashed toward the stage with terrifying speed.

For a split second, Lily froze.

Her heart pounded so loudly she couldn't hear anything else.

Then someone grabbed her.

Strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her backward with enough force to send them both crashing onto the wooden stage floor.

BANG!

The lighting rig slammed into the exact spot where Lily had been standing only a second earlier.

The impact shook the entire auditorium.

Students screamed and scattered in every direction. Phones fell to the floor. Teachers rushed in from the hallway as chaos erupted.

Lily lay on the stage, too stunned to move.

Her breathing was uneven.

Her ears rang.

She blinked slowly, trying to understand what had happened.

"You okay?"

The voice was familiar.

She looked up.

Jason.

He was lying beside her, one arm still around her shoulders. His expression, usually full of arrogance, was replaced by genuine fear.

"You could've been killed," he muttered, almost to himself.

Lily stared at him in disbelief.

He... saved me?

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

Their eyes met.

Then Lily quickly pushed herself away.

"I'm fine."

Jason stood, brushing dust off his uniform.

The rest of the basketball team rushed over.

"Dude! That thing almost crushed both of you!"

"What were you thinking?"

Jason didn't answer.

His eyes remained fixed on Lily as she slowly got to her feet.

Emily came running onto the stage and threw her arms around her.

"Lily! Are you hurt?"

"I'm okay," Lily whispered, though her legs still trembled.

A teacher blew a whistle loudly.

"Everyone outside! Now!"

The students filed out, buzzing with nervous excitement.

Some whispered about the accident.

Others replayed the video they had recorded only moments earlier.

But this time, no one was laughing.

---

Outside the auditorium, an ambulance arrived to check if anyone had been injured.

The principal questioned several students about what had happened.

Jason stood alone beneath a tree, unusually quiet.

"You've been acting weird all day."

Mason walked over, stuffing his hands into his pockets.

Jason sighed.

"I didn't mean for things to go that far."

Mason frowned.

"It was just a prank."

Jason looked toward the auditorium doors.

"No..."

His voice was low.

"It stopped being just a prank the moment she could've died."

For the first time in years, guilt settled heavily in his chest.

---

Meanwhile, Lily sat on a bench outside the nurse's office.

Emily handed her a bottle of water.

"You scared me."

"I'm sorry."

Emily hesitated before asking, "Did you see who pulled you away?"

Lily nodded slowly.

"It was Jason."

Emily's eyes widened.

"What?"

"I don't understand it either."

Lily looked down at the bottle in her hands.

"He embarrassed me in front of the whole school..."

"...then risked his own life to save mine."

Nothing about it made sense.

Not anymore.

Across the courtyard, Jason glanced in Lily's direction.

Their eyes met for only a second.

This time...

He looked away first.

Lily watched him disappear into the crowd, a strange feeling settling in her chest.

For the first time since they met...

She wasn't sure who Jason Blake really was.

And neither was he.
