Second Chance [Yizhan]
CHAPTER 1
Someone
“What do you want me to say Xiao Zhan?”
Someone
“Yes, it’s true. Ziyi and I are together.”
Xiao Zhan slowly came to.
His eyes were closed but he could vaguely hear what was going on around him. Apart from the rhythmic beeping, he could hear someone breathing deeply. He felt a certain warmth wrapped around his palm…turned out someone was holding him.
Xiao Zhan
'Could it be him?'
He struggled and after a long time, managed to open his eyes slightly.
An unexpected blinding light assaulted his pupils, he couldn’t see anything else. Slowly, his eyes began to adapt to the light, it turned out he was in the hospital.
He looked at the person holding his hands, it wasn’t the person he hoped it would be, instead, it was his best friend, Darren Wang.
Darren had always been reliable. Zhan felt relieved. As long as Darren was here, he was safe, he could give in to the fatigue and sleep without having any fears.
Yes, he just woke up but his eyes were still very heavy.
He only managed to open them to take a peek at who was holding him. He could neither move nor make a sound. Darren’s head was down, Zhan couldn’t tell if he was awake.
At first, he was scared but Darren’s presence changed all of that.
Zhan closed his eyes, letting the fatigue slowly take over him.
That person’s face flashed before Zhan’s eyes and he felt his heart beating faster once more.
Why wasn’t Yibo here? Did he hate him so much? Was there no hope for them anymore? Could it be that Yibo wasn’t aware he was hospitalized?
By the way, how did he get here? He clearly remembered…
That day started like every other day.
Xiao Zhan had gone for his lectures and went straight to work afterwards. His relationship with Yibo had been estranged for the past few months because he found out Xiao Zhan had taken an unconventional job and kept it from him.
Zhan lived with his parents and they were well aware of his relationship with Wang Yibo. They had been together since high school, a total of 7 years.
Wang Yibo was from a very wealthy family, he could be considered a young master.
Zhan’s parents were among the middle-lower class but they were comfortable. His father had just retired from his job and received his gratuity. He had no other savings so he decided to invest 95% of the money. Unfortunately, he fell into the hands of scammers and their fortunes turned overnight.
He was no longer able to support Zhan through school.
In order to reduce his parents worries, Zhan decided to get a job.
Meng Ziyi, Yibo’s childhood friend got him one at their family’s private club.
Yibo had offered to help but Zhan didn’t feel too good accepting handouts, it made his self-esteem plunge so he kept the nature of the job a secret from Yibo. He just needed to work for a few months and it would be over.
Little did he know this would be the beginning of the end of his previously rosy relationship.
When Zhan started working, he found out the job wasn’t as it was described to him. Rather than be a place where families could relax, it was an avenue for men and women alike to indulge in debauchery, it was also rumored to be a route used to launder money from a foreign country.
Zhan tried not to get too involved in the workplace gossip, he did his job one day at a time, hoping to leave as soon as he could.
Men and women alike made passes at him. Some of the other workers sometimes obliged them for a fee but Zhan could never do such a thing. He couldn’t quit as he already told his parents to take things easy, saying he had a job and could fend for himself. Also, the pay was quite good, obviously Ziyi had pulled some strings. He just needed time to finish with his studies, he would get a proper job and take care of his parents.
Knowing he was doing okay, his depressed mother got slightly better.
Talking about Meng Ziyi, Zhan took her as a friend but it turned out she had her eyes set on Wang Yibo.
One couldn’t tell if getting him that job was part of her ploy to separate them both.
Yibo knew exactly what went on in that private club so he hated the fact that Zhan had been working there and kept it from him. Once he confirmed Zhan was actually working there, he felt uncomfortable in his heart.
Ziyi watching the whole thing play out, knew a seed of doubt had sprouted in Yibo’s heart. All it took was a little push to get them further and further apart.
By the time Zhan finally saw through her ploy, he decided to come clean to Yibo, to work on their relationship.

CHAPTER 2
After work that evening, Zhan called Yibo, intending to inform him he was coming over but as expected, Yibo ignored his call. Zhan decided to go anyway. He needed to talk to his boyfriend... if he could still be called that. He knew Yibo would understand.
On his way back, he got a bouquet of his favourite flowers, white roses. He was unable to get a taxi so he walked, it took him almost 2 hours to get to Yibo’s. By the time he arrived at the apartment building, he was short of breath. He wanted to take a break in the lobby but knowing Yibo was just an elevator ride from him, Zhan decided to keep going.
As he approached Yibo’s apartment, he rehearsed his carefully planned speech, panting.
It was simple, Yibo was understanding, all he had to do was open up to him. Yibo was well aware of his difficulties and they trusted each other, Yibo knew he wasn’t going to betray him.
Looking back, their fight was totally unnecessary. They were both under a lot of pressure hence he allowed things come this far.
He stopped at Yibo’s door.
He could knock but Yibo had given him a key long ago. He decided to go in.
He put the key in the keyhole and turned the key. He heard a familiar click and the door opened.
The living room was empty, the lights were turned off.
Yibo never turned his lights off when he was alone at night. He left all of his lights on.
At first, Zhan suspected he wasn’t home then he turned on the light. He took out his phone to call again and heard a familiar ring tone from the bedroom.
Xiao Zhan
'Did Yibo suddenly overcome his fear of darkness?'
When Zhan got to the bedroom door, his steps faltered.
He heard muffled sounds coming from inside, he could tell Yibo was talking but there was also another voice coming from the room.
Yibo had company at this hour.
Apart from Zhan and Yibo’s elder brother, no one else was allowed past the living room.
Zhan felt his heart beating faster and faster. He had the urge to turn around and leave. Whoever was inside, he didn’t want to know.
As he turned around to leave, the door swung open.
Meng Ziyi
“Xiao Zhan, what are you doing here by this time?”
Zhan had come to hate that voice.
At first they started off as friends but when Zhan figured out her true intents, his feelings for Ziyi turned to one of hate.
Xiao Zhan
“I should be asking you Meng Ziyi, what are you doing here by this hour?”
As he spoke, he saw Yibo hurry out of the room and grab him by his elbows leading him away, towards the door.
Was Yibo going to throw him out? Had they gotten to this point?
Wang Yibo
“You came unannounced, I wasn’t expecting you.”
Yibo’s voice trembled slightly as he spoke but from the look on his face, Zhan could tell he was disgusted at him.
Xiao Zhan
“Bo, I called you several times but you didn’t pick up. I wanted to see you and talk to you.”
Xiao Zhan
“We’ve been like this for too long.”
Xiao Zhan
“I… I miss you.”
As Zhan spoke, he couldn’t bear to look at Yibo’s face. His eyes were downcast.
He heard Ziyi chuckle from behind him.
Only now did he seem to put things together.
Ziyi was here at this time and from the way she was dressed, it was obvious she intended to spend the night. Yibo’s house had only one bedroom….
Xiao Zhan
“Yibo… what’s going on?”
Xiao Zhan
“Why is she here by this time?”
Zhan finally summoned up the courage to ask. As for the answer he didn’t know if he was ready to hear it.
Wang Yibo
“I don’t owe you any explanation, we ended our relationship a while ago. I can have anyone I like come over”.
CHAPTER 3
Those words hurt Zhan in the deepest part of his heart. He felt his heart pounding, everything surrounding him became slightly blurred.
Yes, a break up was mentioned but neither of them took it seriously as both parties were upset on that day.
Besides, they had been on and off recently... why did Yibo decide to act on it now? The words ‘I can have anyone I like come over’ played repeatedly in his head.
Zhan remembered when Yibo got this apartment, apart from Zhan himself, Yibo wanted no one else coming here, not even Ziyi. He took it as their safe zone and it remained so for a long time. Zhan forcefully brought Ziyi over but she wasn’t allowed to go past the living room.
Right now, hearing this from Yibo, Zhan felt he had nowhere to go.
This was Yibo’s apartment but he considered it his home also. He spent more time here than he did in his parents’ house until they got into a fight.
He could vaguely hear Meng Ziyi urging Yibo to tell Zhan something and he could guess what it was.
He finally decided to focus.
Xiao Zhan
“Are you both together now?”
Zhan spoke but he stood facing the door.
After what seemed like forever, Yibo replied with a muffled “Yes”.
Zhan was stunned and finally looked Yibo in the eyes. He heard Yibo say something but he didn’t pay attention to it. After a few minutes, Zhan simply dropped the flowers he was holding and walked away.
Meng Ziyi
“Hey, come take back your flowers…”
Zhan ignored Ziyi’s calls and walked away.
He had walked for God knows how long until he found himself in front of Darren Wang’s apartment.
Darren was surprised to see him at that ungodly hour. From the look in Zhan’s eyes, he could tell something was wrong.
He immediately pulled Zhan into a hug.
Zhan told Darren everything that happened between sobs. He was heartbroken, he was tired. He had been walking for hours and the fatigue was now apparent.
Darren tried to console him but Zhan couldn’t control his tears.
Darren got up to get him a glass of water and by the time he returned, he found Zhan on the floor… unconscious.
