The drizzling rain outside his window convinced him to take another 10 minute. And so he snoozed his alarm clock and went back to sleep.
When he woke again from the million phone calls, he realized he had fucked up. Scrambling out of his bed, Yoongi grabbed the phone and accidentally rejected the call. He called back quickly and the caller was pissed.
"YOU DARE REJECT MY CALL NOW, MIN YOONGI?!"
The yelling was too much for him. Yoongi had the phone away from his ear, the sleepiness finally left him thanks to that screeching from his best friend.
"I'm up," he murmured, voice cracked.
The other side quieted.
"I'm on my way, I swear."
"Yoongi yah," the voice called his name calmly. Yoongi concentrated on what his best friend would say next. "School is already over for today."
Yoongi pulled the phone back and read the time.
Oh.
"I've been calling because I forgot the key and I've been standing out here for an hour now. Open the door!"
The last bit was heard along side a bang on the door. Yoongi dropped the phone and scurried to answer the door. Opening, he found Jin standing outside with a death glare so fierce Yoongi didn't even dare to look twice.
"Were you dead?" Jin shot him a look as he was coming inside.
Yoongi's dorm room is as cramp as any school dorm could offer, and whenever Jin came to visit (which was all the time), Yoongi was reminded that he needed to organize his living space better. He wanted to learn from the few Japanese students he encountered at school since he heard that Japanese were the master of simplicity and minimalism.
"I was exhausted," Yoongi answered. "I stayed up all night getting the homework done."
"What's the point of doing homework if you're just going to miss class and not having it graded anyway?"
"It's for my conscience," Yoongi plopped down on the bed and got slapped on the shin.
"You sit on the floor." Jin commented, and Yoongi was not in the mood to argue. He had just woke up, he'd swim in a lava lake if he was told to because he was an idiot.
"Anyway," Jin murmured mostly to himself. "Someone asked for you today..."
Yoongi reached to grab one of the manga Jin had brought. "Who?"
"That boy you love—"
Yoongi looked up, eyes flaring. Jin was maintaining his firm eye contact until Yoongi looked away first.
"—to avoid." Jin finished. He could hear his tiny best friend sigh in relief.
Jin sighed too. "You can't live like this."
"Like what? Be more specific. It hasn't been an hour yet since I woke up."
"I bet with my classmates about you a week ago. Don't let me down, Yoongi."
"What bet?" Yoongi lowered his manga. He hated to admit but he was a little interested. Just a little.
"You know our school is small. Talks travel fast."
"What talk?" Yoongi had now closed the manga. Jin was glad he did, because what he was about to discuss could lead to urge to tear things apart and he was rather fond of his newly bought babies.
"The talk that you're gay and shit."
"I am gay."
"I know but still," Jin searched for a better structure to put his words. He didn't want to waste the 5,000 won he had bet on getting Yoongi a boyfriend within a week.
"There are talks," Jin started. "That you are faking your... You know, for attention. And I know that's not the case but I can't defend you when I have no evidence to back it up. I'm not trying to pressure you but, get a boyfriend."
"I don't even have time to sleep, what makes you think I have time for another human being?"
"You have time for Holly. He'd still be here if the dorm headmistress didn't ban pets."
"Holly is different. He wouldn't wake up one morning and decide he didn't love me anymore."
"Aha!" Jin snapped his fingers. "So you have a fear of abandonment!"
"Don't we all?"
"Bet you have commitment issues, too."
"I do not."
"Prove it, punk."
"I do not have commitment issues."
"You do."
"Jin, no."
"Prove it, then. Get into a relationship."
"A what?"
"You heard me. If you could last for 3 months, I'd do your homework for you for the rest of your high school years."
"Done." Yoongi realized only then that he may or may not have answered too quickly. But hey, the rest of high school without homework sounded like heaven right now. He couldn't let the chance slip.
"Done?" Jin confirmed. Yoongi nodded as an answer. "Good. Then, on the last day of semester 2, I'll get my answer."
"Cool."
"Oh, one more condition." Jin fidgeted with his manga page.
"What now?"
"The person you are going to have a relationship with has to be Park Jimin and he can't know about this bet between us."
This time Yoongi was reluctant. But in the end, only one word that mattered.
"Done."
"Cool." Jin grinned. "Remember the deadline. You have 3 months, specifically 99 days."
-
I am stupid.
Yoongi concluded.
Standing in front of Jimin's class the next day with a fake flower in his hand, the only thought that came to his mind was I am utterly, undeniably stupid to accept this bet! That, and the fact that he had bought a fake flower instead of a real one. Why the hell was he being so stingy for? They didn't even cost that much differently. Stupid, stupid, stupid!
But well, either no homework for the rest of high school or doing Jin's who-knows-what bidding and honestly, Yoongi didn't feel like losing this one.
He was late again this morning. You would think staying at the school dorm would help him get to school on time but nope, Yoongi loved to prove people wrong. He was half an hour late today and he could get in class if he went to ask for a permission slip from the office. But that would mean seeing the principal and Yoongi was not very fond of her. She was the physical definition of mean and scary.
Now, waiting for the bell to ring, Yoongi was peeking through the window to see if Park Jimin showed up at school today. It wasn't that Jimin had ever missed any class. It was just that Yoongi was hoping that, for some magical reason, his future boyfriend happened to also miss class just like him.
Wow, future boyfriend. Yoongi cringed. A future fake boyfriend was more like it. He didn't hate Park Jimin or anything, but as far as people know, he had a rather messy past with the other one. When they were in middle school—proximately around 12 years old, Yoongi had punched Jimin straight to his nose and broke it. There was so much blood that the teacher had fainted. Yoongi didn't recall the reason, but he just knew Jimin was no longer his friend since that day.
It's not like they had ever been close friends in the first place. Just casual friends... who happened to have houses next to each other... who also happened to have sleep over from time to time.
Now that he thought about it, he wondered what was the reason behind that punch. He would love to find out. Maybe he could travel back in time and ask his younger self.
Heck, if he could travel back in time, he would stop his younger self from punching younger Jimin. ****. He really wanted to travel back in time now.
"What the hell?"
Yoongi snapped out of his thought and found Jimin looming above him. He stood up and took a careful step backward to give them both a good distance to talk.
"Min Yoongi sitting in front of my class instead of avoiding me like I'm some kind of a plague?" Jimin raised his brows in a mocking expression. Already, Yoongi flushed red in both embarrassment and regret. "I must be dreaming."
"Uh..." Yoongi found himself unable to form a reply.
"What is it, demon?" Jimin put one hand on his hip, waiting. "What plan do you have to ruin my life today?"
No, no, not ruining. At least I hope not. He would not want to hurt Jimin again, and he's not 12 anymore.
"I want to date you," he found the words slipped through easily. Jimin gawked at him, and Jimin's classmates suddenly crowded the hallway. They eyed him up and down as if he was a predator trying to lure their young out to devour.
"I'm definitely hallucinating." Jimin murmured to himself before he looked to Yoongi again. "I'm sorry, what?"
"I want to date you." Yoongi repeated, this time he was fully aware of himself saying it. "I want to take you out. And hold your hands, and go try different café every day. And I want to take cute and silly selfies with you. Maybe we can share one ice-cream cone and when we're in the cinema, we can secretly make out, I don't know. What's your favorite color?"
Yoongi was embarrassed and shy as much as Jimin was dumbfounded and speechless. He had written down what to say and memorized it the night before. But now that he had actually said it out loud, he found it too cringy and now he wanted to jump into a lake and live with the fish, never coming back.
Jimin was still speechless and gawking at him but Yoongi now noticed the pink in his cheeks. Jimin's classmates had been orderly enough not to butt in, but they were still watching how this would play out. Some even took photos and Yoongi was ready to be made into a meme should this go the other way.
It would be the first if Jimin rejected him.
Well, it's not like he ever had experience in confessing and being rejected before. One would need to confess first to be rejected and Yoongi had never confessed, ever.
"So... what do you think-"
Jimin punched him in the face.
