~The Chaos Next To Me~ 2

Season 2 — Prologue

🦋🦋🦋

The Years Between Us

Ten years.

That's how long it had been since two little boys stood on the same street...

promising they would meet again.

A lot could happen in ten years.

Children grew taller.

Voices changed.

Homes changed.

Even the places that once felt familiar could begin to look different.

But some memories...

never really grew old.

-------------------

In Australia

Morning sunlight slipped through the curtains.

A teenage boy reached over and silenced his alarm.

"Five more minutes..."

A voice came from outside his room.

"Toru! You'll be late!"

"I'm coming!"

He sat up reluctantly.

The little boy who once complained about homework and argued over lunch boxes was gone.

In his place was a teenager who moved through his mornings with practiced routine.

School uniform.

Books.

Breakfast.

A quick goodbye.

Life in Australia had become normal.

The streets no longer felt unfamiliar.

The language no longer felt strange.

He had friends.

Teachers who knew him.

Places he visited every week.

A life that belonged entirely to him.

Before leaving his room, his eyes briefly fell on an old box sitting at the back of his shelf.

He paused.

Then opened it.

Inside were a few things from another time.

A faded photograph.

A tiny purikura strip.

And a small friendship badge.

He picked up the badge.

The edges were slightly worn.

He smiled faintly.

"...Still here."

He placed it carefully back inside.

Then closed the box.

"Bye."

And just like that...

he stepped into another ordinary day.

-------------------

In Japan

Across the ocean...

another morning began.

A boy sat quietly at the breakfast table.

His mother placed his breakfast in front of him.

"Don't forget your lunch."

"Okay."

"Your school bag?"

"I have it."

She smiled.

"You're getting ready early these days."

He simply shrugged.

"Couldn't sleep."

He finished breakfast and stood.

Before leaving, he noticed something on a nearby shelf.

An old photograph.

Five little children stood together.

One of them was making an absurd face.

He stared at it for a moment.

Then smiled.

Very slightly.

His mother noticed.

"You still keep that?"

He looked at the photograph.

"Yeah."

She didn't ask anything else.

He slipped it carefully into a drawer.

Then picked up his school bag.

"I'm leaving."

"Have a good day."

"Mm."

The door closed behind him.

The boy who once filled every street with noise...

now walked quietly through the morning.

-------------------

Years had passed.

The first few years after the move had been different.

There had been visits.

Summer vacations.

Laughter.

Games.

Five friends meeting again as though nothing had changed.

Then...

the visits became less frequent.

And eventually—

they stopped.

No dramatic goodbye.

No final argument.

No clear ending.

Life simply became busy.

Days became months.

Months became years.

And the children who once thought tomorrow would always bring them back together...

grew up.

--------------------

In Australia...

a teenager walked through a crowded school corridor.

Friends called his name.

He turned and smiled.

He belonged here now.

🌸

In Japan...

another teenager walked beneath familiar trees on his way to school.

The streets had changed.

So had he.

Neither knew what the other was doing.

Neither knew how much the other had changed.

Neither knew that their lives...

after years of moving in completely different directions...

were slowly beginning to turn toward the same place.

Some friendships disappear with time.

Some become memories.

And some...

simply wait.

Because sometimes...

distance isn't the end of a story.

It's only the space between two chapters.

Season 2 - Chapter 1

💫

The school bell rang.

Students poured through the corridors, talking loudly as they rushed toward their classrooms.

Among them walked Kazama.

His school bag rested neatly over one shoulder.

His uniform was perfectly arranged.

His expression was calm.

"Hey, Kazama!"

He turned.

A boy from his class waved at him.

"You coming to the library after school?"

"Maybe. I have some homework."

"You're always doing homework."

Kazama smiled.

"Someone has to."

His friend laughed.

"You haven't changed."

Kazama raised an eyebrow.

"Is that supposed to be a compliment?"

"Definitely."

They continued walking together.

It was an ordinary morning.

Nothing special.

Nothing unusual.

And yet...

there was a time when ordinary mornings had looked completely different.

-------------------

During lunch, Kazama sat beneath a tree with his friends.

They talked about school.

Sports.

Music.

Weekend plans.

Kazama listened more than he spoke.

Every now and then, he laughed.

Australia had stopped feeling like a foreign country a long time ago.

It was home now.

He knew the streets.

The shops.

The school.

The people.

He knew where to get his favorite snacks after class.

He knew which bus arrived late.

He even knew which teacher would notice if someone forgot their homework.

Years ago, everything had felt unfamiliar.

Now...

he couldn't imagine waking up anywhere else.

-------------------

After school, Kazama walked home.

The afternoon sun stretched long shadows across the pavement.

He stopped at a small shop.

"One, please."

He bought a snack and stepped outside.

For some reason, the packaging reminded him of something.

A childhood afternoon.

A playground.

Five children sitting beneath a tree.

A boy making everyone laugh.

Kazama smiled faintly.

"...Shinchan."

The name slipped out before he realized it.

He paused.

Then continued walking.

It had been years.

Life had moved on.

So had he.

-------------------

At home, Kazama's mother was preparing dinner.

"You're home."

"Yeah."

"How was school?"

"Fine."

She smiled.

"Your father will be home late tonight."

Kazama nodded.

"Again?"

"He has an important meeting."

Kazama sighed.

"He's been busy lately."

His mother glanced at him.

"He's been working hard."

"I know."

Kazama placed his bag down.

"I'm going to finish my homework."

"Don't stay up too late."

"I won't."

He walked toward his room.

Before closing the door, he glanced at the small shelf beside his desk.

There was an old box tucked behind his books.

He hesitated.

Then pulled it out.

Inside...

the past was still waiting.

The old purikura strip.

The faded photograph.

And the little friendship badge.

Kazama picked up the badge.

His thumb brushed over its worn edges.

For a moment, he remembered a small hand holding his.

A promise.

You'll come back.

He smiled quietly.

"I haven't forgotten."

He placed the badge back inside.

Then closed the box.

Outside his window, the evening sky slowly darkened.

Kazama returned to his homework.

Another ordinary day.

Another ordinary life.

He had no idea...

that the life he had built so far was about to change.

Season 2 - Chapter 2

❄️🐦

The morning train passed quietly beyond the school gates.

Students gathered in small groups, laughing and talking before class.

Among them stood Shinchan.

His school bag hung loosely over one shoulder.

He stood beneath a tree, quietly watching the leaves move in the breeze.

"Shinchan!"

He turned.

Nene waved from across the courtyard.

"You came early."

"Yeah."

Masao hurried over behind her.

"I thought I was going to be the first one here!"

Bo-chan followed quietly.

"...You weren't."

Masao sighed.

"Bo-chan..."

Shinchan smiled.

"You guys haven't changed."

Nene raised an eyebrow.

"Neither have you."

Shinchan looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

She smiled.

"Nothing."

-------------------

The bell rang.

Everyone headed toward their classroom.

Shinchan took his usual seat near the window.

He opened his notebook.

The teacher entered.

"Good morning, everyone."

"Good morning."

The lesson began.

Shinchan listened quietly.

He wrote down the notes.

Answered when he was asked.

And occasionally...

he stared outside the window.

Nene noticed.

She leaned slightly toward him.

"You're doing it again."

"What?"

"Looking outside."

Shinchan shrugged.

"I like the view."

Nene smiled.

"You used to hate sitting quietly."

"I grew up."

Masao overheard.

"That's true."

He grinned.

"You used to talk so much that the teacher would get headaches."

Shinchan smiled.

"I was talented."

Bo-chan nodded.

"...Very talented."

They all laughed softly.

For a moment...

the old Shinchan was there.

-------------------

At lunch, the four friends sat together beneath the same kind of tree they had once shared as children.

Nene opened her lunch.

Masao immediately started talking about school.

Bo-chan quietly ate.

Shinchan listened.

Then Nene noticed something.

"You're not eating."

Shinchan looked down.

"Oh."

He opened his lunch box.

"I forgot."

Masao laughed.

"You still forget things!"

Shinchan grinned.

"Some things never change."

Nene smiled.

"That's more like you."

------------------

After school, Shinchan walked home alone.

The streets were familiar.

The houses.

The small shops.

The playground where they had once spent entire afternoons.

He slowed down near the old park.

For a moment, he could almost hear children's laughter.

A little boy running across the playground.

A familiar voice calling his name.

"Kazama!"

Shinchan stopped.

The memory disappeared as quickly as it came.

He looked at the empty swings.

Then smiled faintly.

"...Idiot."

He continued walking.

-------------------

At home, Misae was preparing dinner.

"You're back."

"Yeah."

"How was school?"

"Fine."

She looked at him.

"Just fine?"

Shinchan smiled.

"It was good."

Hiroshi sat nearby reading the newspaper.

"Your teacher called yesterday."

Shinchan blinked.

"What did I do?"

"Nothing bad."

Hiroshi smiled.

"She said you're doing well."

Shinchan shrugged.

"That's good."

Misae watched him quietly.

There were moments when she still remembered the little boy who never stopped talking.

Now...

he seemed to think before speaking.

She missed his endless chatter sometimes.

But she knew he was growing up.

------------------

That night, Shinchan sat beside his window.

The room was quiet.

He opened a drawer.

Inside was the old purikura strip.

Five little faces smiled back at him.

He ran his finger lightly across the photograph.

Then closed the drawer.

Some memories were better left untouched.

At least...

for now.

Outside, the night breeze moved through the trees.

Somewhere far away, another boy was living a completely different life.

Neither knew it yet.

But their paths...

were already beginning to turn back toward each other.
