There was chaos everywhere. War had broken in the dormitory and everyone was finding a safe place to hide. The seniors continued to riot and beat up anyone they saw in their path to find,"The One"
I stayed hidden in one corner of the dormitory between two trunks with a blanket covering almost all of my body. The situation was getting worse by the second as Calvin, the biggest bully in our school and also the son of the vice principal along with his gang continued to search in anger for "The One" they had come for.
For almost all his life, Calvin has been in the Almond Boarding School. He lived with his father in one of the numerous bungalows the school offered to staff. He had lived alone with his father for as long as anyone can remember and had therefore had no motherly care. People often said that was what had caused his violent and arrogant behavior.
Having been promoted to vice principal when Calvin was in 6th grade, his father also had little time for him. Calvin met his minions(Geoffrey, Simon and Ben) when the three enrolled into the school back when they were in 5th grade. The four became a notorious force known commonly for bullying and stealing.
Because of their muscular physique, all the juniors and even some seniors feared to step up against them. I had been a major victim of most of their acts and had gone through a lot over the years. The school overlooked his actions most of the time since his father held a high position and was also favorite to be the next Principal.
Even though I had know Calvin since I joined the school in 3rd grade(by then Calvin was in the fifth grade), he never regarded me as a friend despite all I had done for him. When my parents first enrolled me into the Almond Boarding School, I thought of it as a punishment and being abandoned by my parents. I used to cry a lot at night and sometimes refused to eat.
Calvin was the first person who approached me and told me to 'man up and stop acting like a girl in kindergarten'. Even though he seemed to have forgotten that day, I still looked up to him as my pillar of confidence despite all he had done to me. I made some friends for myself as time went on. Kevin joined first in 4th grade and was followed up by Ken and Derek in mid 5th grade.
They alongside me had been suffering at the hands of Calvin and his gang. We mostly hid in an abandoned classroom when being pursued by Calvin. We sometimes missed classes and even lunch breaks because of this. No matter how many times we explained, no one was ever willing to listen.
I could here him moving and tossing things around. I could feel him getting closer and closer to me by the second. I was scared,I was shivering, I was praying, hoping that he wouldn't find me. I didn't want to think of the things he would do if he were to see me. I felt exposed and useless I didn't want him to see me by any chance.... for I was "The One" he was searching for.
I couldn't take anymore of his beatings. Geoffrey and Ben were holding me tightly and I couldn't move a single muscle. I could feel myself passing out as Calvin continued to beat me up.
Even though I hid myself very well, he and his minions somehow managed to find me. They wanted money and I was not willing to give them any. This wasn't the first time Calvin had beaten me up for refusing to give him money. Normally, my friends(Derek and Kevin) would stand up for me in these situations. But they weren't here this time.
Calvin always spent his money on unnecessary things. He would buy clothes we weren't even supposed to wear in school and they would get ceased. His father sometimes helped him get those clothes back but I wouldn't take long before he misplaced them.
He called me his bank since he was always sure to get money from me whenever he came by.
"Are you going to give me the money?". He asked, as he punched me in the face. The pain I was going through was excruciating and I really wanted it to end.
" F-f-fine, I will". Even though the the money I had on me was the last I had, I was willing to give it to him in order to end the pain.
"Wise choice"
I took out the from my wallet and gave it all to him. He just turned around and walked out of the dormitory, smiling at my money in his hands. I now had to depend on the food the school provided in order to survive for the next two months.
On the day I arrived at the school, my parents told me that I was going to face a lot and that I should be ready for everything. It was very difficult for me to be separated from my parents. I watched them drive away from the school as tears ran down my cheeks. At that moment, I was filled with anger and hate for my parents. They were the last people I thought would abandon me. And I vowed to myself never to make anyone let me cry ever again.
I lay on my bed and decided to clear my mind. I didn't want to think of what had just occurred. I began to think of all the things I wanted to do when I grow up. I wanted to be an astronaut. I wanted to go to space and discover all kinds of aliens and study cool flaming rocks that fell from space. I..
Cool flaming rocks. There were cool flaming rocks falling from space. I couldn't believe my eyes. "Are those shooting stars?"I said, pointing at the sky through the windows.
Everyone gathered where I was sleeping to take a look for themselves.
As they got closer, the flames seemed to look much realer and the speed at which is was falling got scarier.
" That's not a shooting star" one guy said, "It...... looks like..... a meteor"
My heart started to beat really fast. I had guessed it right. This couldn't be real. I didn't want to believe it.
"Umm..guys that one seems to be headed in this direction" someone said, pointing at a meteor charging towards our school.
I felt like the world was going to end. There were actually cool flaming rocks falling from space and one was headed for our school.
And that was not so cool
"Everyone stay away from the area close to the abandoned classrooms" The school public announcer had been the students warning to stay clear off the area where the meteor had landed last night. Fortunately, the meteor didn't destroy any buildings but had destroyed some of the vegetation surrounding the school. The school authorities had already contacted experts who were on their way to investigate the crash site.
"Hey Bismarck" I looked behind to see Kevin,Derek and Ken walking towards me.
"Hey guys what's up"
It was unlikely for us to have classes today due to the incident. Even if we were to go to class, the teachers would not have showed up.
"This is just what I wanted", Derek said " something that would drive us out of our boring classrooms". Derek was not a big fan of school and learning. He had already tried to run away from the school a number of times but failed. Even though he was really smart, he dedicated all his time to reading comics and his grades had therefore suffered.
"Well I can't agree with you any less" Kevin said, "I think we need a little time out of the classrooms".
I was really tempted to go check out the meteor. I had always wanted to go to space to study all these rocks and planets. I never imagined that one of my greatest desires would actual land at my door step. If only I had vast knowledge I science I would have gone to check it out.
" Who's that over there" Ken said, pointing in the direction behind the abandoned classrooms.
"Isn't that Anderson, the weird nerd?" Kevin said
Anderson was the smartest kid in our class. He always acted alone and also suffered at the hands of Calvin sometimes. For all I knew, he was a quiet boy who always avoided trouble. But I didn't understand why the quiet kid would be breaking the rules that even Calvin would dare not break at this moment. That's when I realised that he was just what I needed. Anderson was a walking science textbook and it looked like he was sneaking to the crash site.
"Guys I think we should follow him" I said
"What?" they chorused.
" I said let's follow him"
"C'mon dude you can't be serious" Kevin said "The wisest to do is to report him to a teacher and everything is settled".
" Sounds like an adventure to me, so yeah I agree let's follow him" Derek said.
"What do you say Ken?" I asked.
"W-well its not advisable b-but it I'm Ok if no one finds out we went in there"
Ken was the youngest among us and never really questioned the decisions we sometimes made.
"Okay then let's go" I ordered.
It wasn't easy to sneak behind Anderson. We had to stop sometimes and hide when he felt he was being followed. Judging from his pace and sense of direction, it seemed like it wasn't his first time coming out here into the woods.
We continued to follow for a while until he stopped and put down his backpack.
"You guys can come out now, theres no need to hide anymore".
I couldn't believe he knew we were following him all this while. I had really underestimated his skills.
" You caught us" I said, "what exactly are you doing here in the woods?".
He continued to take out some weird things out of his backpack.
" I believe we all know why I'm here,"he started, " We all came here with the same goal and that thing which we seek is right three " he said, pointing in the direction of the meteor.
I couldn't believe my eyes, Was I dreaming, I was actually a few hundred meters away from an actual meteorite.
I smiled.
