Leaving The Humans Unchecked

Prologue

The sound of a woman's laughter suddenly echoed across the realms, prompting several unsuspecting Gods and Goddesses to unconsciously look for its source around them.

It was almost eerie, with how loud and uncontrolled it sounded. But most of them ignored it, confident that it was only nothing.

Most, but not all.

High up in the Mountain of Olympus, the Greek Gods felt a shiver run down their spines. They knew that that laughter would soon be followed by disaster.

In the Arena, two powerful warriors almost stopped on their tracks as the sound vibrated within their surroundings.

"Oh no." Hercules said under his breath as he and Ares clashed swords with one another while they train in combat. The God of War has the same face of concern as well.

They turned to Hephaestus, who only wanted them to test the strength of his newly-crafted weapons, and the blacksmith only shrugged in return.

Up above the clouds, three of the Gods exchanged worried looks. Their time of relaxation seems to have been cut short.

"She sounds more excited than usual." Apollo noted, looking at Dionysus and Aphrodite as he drank his wine. The two agreed, knowing the laughter too well.

In the depths of Tartarus, a certain temperamental God tried his best to stop himself from bursting into flames.

"If she comes down here again, I will strangle her." Hades growled lowly, prompting Persephone to pat his head as an attempt to calm him down.

In one of the highest towers in Olympus, the laughter alerted the wild battle instincts of two Goddesses.

"We will surely need more soldiers to stop her if she does something drastic again." Athena clenched both of her fists in annoyance, making Artemis sympathize with the Goddess of Wisdom.

Somewhere deep beneath the chasms of the sea, a tremor could be felt across the ocean floor.

"I hope I don't need to get involved with whatever she's planning to do." Poseidon huffed loudly, earning a small chuckle from his son, Theseus.

And when the laughter has finally reached the ears of their King, they knew that he would be on high alert until something happens.

"She is planning something again." Zeus clenched his jaw and sat back on his throne in irritation.

"We need to learn how to restrain her." Hera suggested as she looked outside of the window, watching the humans on Earth as they pray in her temples.

"Even her own mother, Nyx, couldn't do anything about her behavior. She's simply too wild and unrestrained. If I kill her daughter, there would be war among us." Zeus replied, crossing his his arms against his chest.

"Should we seek help with the other Gods?" Hera looked at him and he thought for a moment before answering his wife.

Seeking help from Gods of other realms is not uncommon, but it will certainly cause a slight disturbance in the natural balance of their world.

"The others also have trouble makers of their own; Loki, Anansi, Elegua, Kokopelli, Laverna, Lugh, Veles, Wisakedjak, Set, Nezha, Sun Wukong, Susanoo-no-Mikoto and many other trickster Gods have been constantly causing headache ever since their creation." Zeus shook his head lightly as he spoke.

He knows that resulting to such drastic measures should be reserved for extreme events only.

Hera sat on the smaller throne beside him, still wondering how they can stop the impending trouble.

"Let's just hope that it's not too big this time." Zeus said, and she can't help but agree silently.

As silence returned to the realms, there was still no one who could guess the reason for that laughter.

Somewhere in Asgard, two of the most annoying Gods seem to be having a good time together.

"This is the reason why I like the way you think." Eris slammed the glass table with one hand while the other one held her belly.

She was ecstatic and her unpredictable mood, that was deemed to be much worse than Hades', seem to be in full swing.

Loki looked at her with amusement, noticing the way she acts and talks like a human instead of a powerful God.

"Good. There's 10 of us now." Loki grinned, earning Eris' curiosity.

"Oh? Who are we having fun with?" She asks excitedly.

"Apep, Tiamat, Shiva, Ishtar, Daji, Sun Wukong, Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, Ahriman, you and, of course, me." Loki answered immediately.

"Ooh! You already got some notorious people! Do you want me to recruit some more?" She bounced her eyebrows up and down like a child planning some prank.

"Please." Loki slightly bowed his head at her and she gave him a thumbs up.

The Big End

"The world is ending and yet you're here playing video games." My sister entered my room and sat beside me as I continued to mash buttons on my controller.

"At least I'll die while doing the thing that I love the most." I replied with a small smile, still not moving my eyes away from the screen.

I heard her let out a small chuckle. It sounded more of her accepting our current situation rather than amusement of what I'm doing.

There is only silence between us. After all, there was nothing left to say but our goodbyes to each other.

"10 years." She began speaking, "It's been 10 years since the start of the Apocalypse. We've done all we can until there's nothing left to do but to just accept it." She sighed.

I nodded numbly at her statement, ignoring the painful thudding inside of my chest.

I could feel the tears staining my eyes, but I steeled myself to hold out for just a bit longer.

I've been crying non-stop for the past week after knowing that people have given up in trying to find a way to stop our existence from getting erased. I couldn't get myself to settle with that fact no matter how hard I try to pretend to be.

We don't want to die. But then again, it's not up to us to decide our fates.

We thought we could, but it only ended up in wasting more time, money, food and resources. We have used every single bit of tactic, thousands of scientific research and centuries of religion - only to be faced with nothing but a dead end.

Humanity has suffered a devastating defeat.

And now here we are, spending our last minutes with our loved ones.

"Is it bad to wish to live for just one more day?" Her voice cracked as she blurted out her question, finally breaking her calm facade.

I dropped the controller and hugged her as her tears fell. She immediately leaned against me and started sobbing uncontrollably.

I have no idea what to say to make her stop crying because I don't know if it's even worth smiling anymore.

We're facing our imminent deaths, so what could I do to assure her?

"At least you're home with me." I said quietly, taking a deep breath.

I was so afraid that we would die separately; alone, terrified and worried about each other.

Now that we're together, I could finally say that I'm prepared to die. As long as my sister is beside me, I'm fine with anything.

"I just want to live." She said and I tightened my arms around her.

Crying along with her, I couldn't say anything anymore.

No one could've predicted that this was going to happen so soon.

A few moments later, we finally heard it.

The laughter that started the end of the world.

The sound of Armageddon.
