Marrow
By Lee Niacal
The warm hot broth trickled down her throat. ‘This is the best batch yet,’ Euna thought to herself as she sipped the soup. Euna Ide Dahl was the head of nutrition at the Josiah King Medical Center in Manhattan. She is a beautiful and tall woman in her late twenties.
“You have to give me your secret,” One of the nurses entered the break room.
“What secret?” Euna laughed nervously.
“Great skin and not to mention your workout routine,” the nurse explained as she took her lunch out of the refrigerator.
“No secret just a good diet and exercise.” Euna said getting up from the table.
“I’m sure the daily soup regiment has something to do with it too,” Another nurse entered the break room.
“Ladies, there is no secret, just a lot of self-care,” Euna said leaving the break room.
Euna had great skin and fabulous hair and a figure that made every woman jealous. She walked down the hallway.
“Dr. Dahl,” A doctor called her name and reached out to grab her arm.
“Dr. Webb nice to see you; Can have my arm back?” Euna asked with a soft smile on her face.
“Sure, if you agree to go out with me tonight,” he asked.
“I’ve explained before that I’m not interested and I wish you would respect my decision,” Euna said pulling her arm away. Dr. Webb was a large over weight man with thinning hair. He wore a wedding ring but that didn’t seem to stop him.
“I would respect your decision if you made the right one,” he reached out to grab her arm again.
“It is the right one for me. One more of these advances and I’ll be forced to report you,” Euna whispered to him.
“This isn’t over,” Dr. Webb said hobbling away.
“Are you okay?” One of the nurses walked over from the nurse’s station to her.
“Yes, I’m fine thank you.” Euna replied.
“Try not to get on his bad side, his wife is the executive director and they can make or break your career,” the nurse said with an understanding smile and went back to her station.
Later that evening Euna was at home looking in the mirror. The lipstick made her lips look as red as blood. Her dress was tight and she ran her fingers through her hair.
“Coming,” she walked to the door.
“You look amazing,” a man of average height with good build and masculine features stood in the doorway.
“You look delicious,” Euna said licking her lips.
“Thank you, are you ready?” the man asked.
“Yes, I just need to get my bag,” Euna went back and grabbed her bag, a large brand name bag.
The evening ended with Euna and the young man at his place.
“Sorry I should have cleaned up a bit,” he laughed as he ran through the messy apartment and picked up clothes.
“The main thing is that the bathroom is clean, right?” Euna said with a smirk.
“Yeah, I cleaned that today,” he laughed also.
“Great, how about desert,” Euna said putting down her purse.
“What did you have in mind?” he walked over to her. She just smiled and blew a fine powder in his face.
“What the hell was that?” he asked fanning the dust away.
“Just breathe,” Euna said in a small voice.
“No,” the man turned to run away.
“Don’t run around, you could hurt yourself,” Euna said walking behind him. He turned to look at her as he fell to the ground. His head nearly missing the end table near the sofa.
The following morning, he woke up in bed with extreme pain in his legs.
“Good morning handsome,” Euna walked into the room.
“Get away from me!” he screamed and threw a pillow at her.
“What’s wrong with you?” Euna asked with a confused look on her face.
“What did you do to me?” he tried to sit up.
“I brought you home and put you in bed. You were drunk and falling over.” Euna got closer to him.
“But I did enjoy myself with you last night,” Euna licked his neck.
“I don’t want to see you anymore, just leave” he pushed her away.
“That’s fine I already have what I need, be well,” Euna smiled teeth showing and left the room. He tried again to get up but he could not. He scrambled around for his phone and found it on the dresser next to him.
Euna grabbed her purse and headed home. Once at home, she opened her purse and took out two large jars. She licked the drops of blood that hung to the outside of the jar.
“Nothing like fresh marrow,” Euna’s pupils dilated as she opened the jar and smelled the marrow.
“Soup,” she whispered as she stirred the thick marrow with her finger.
“Yum,” she licked her finger and put the jars in the refrigerator.
Later that day at the hospital, Euna was in the break room eating soup.
“Hi gorgeous,” Dr. Webb said coming into the break room closing the door behind him.
“I was just leaving,” Euna went to stand up to leave.
“Sit down,” he pushed her down back in her chair. Euna didn’t say anything she just looked up at him.
“I have tried to be nice to you. But I can see that you don’t understand kindness.” He sat down next to her.
“You need me to be happy with you. All the other women around here understand this, but you don’t seem to understand it.” He pulled his chair closer to her.
“I can make or break you, I can make you disappear. Your career will go up in smokes!” he yelled.
“I’m god around here and you need to start acting like it.” He smelled her hair. Euna just sat still looking at the door.
“I’m not afraid of you,” she said and he grabbed hold of her hair.
“You need to start,” he said pulling her close to him by her hair.
“Who closed the door,” one of the nurses walked in and saw what was happening and walked out again closing the door.
“My suggestion, be more agreeable.” He kissed her on the forehead and then pushed her away from himself.
Euna didn’t say anything, he got up and straighten his clothes and picked up his phone. He walked out of the room.
“Are you okay?” the nurse who had left the room returned.
“I’m fine,” Euna, said fixing her hair.
“If you ever need to talk…”
“Has he done this to you?” Euna asked the nurse who looked down at the table before speaking.
“Dr. Webb uses this place like his own personal harem. Everyone is too scared to say anything. We need our jobs, being blacklisted in this industry is not a good thing,” the nurse said never once looking up.
“You know I’ve seen you around several times but I never asked your name,” Euna said.
“Alma,”
“Well Nurse Alma it is a pleasure to meet you and don’t worry we’ll get through this,” Euna smiled a big smile with lots of teeth. Alma smiled back.
“I want to believe that,” Alma replied.
“Believe it, do you want some soup. I have extra,” Euna said holding up the container.
“The secret soup, I’d love to try some.” Alma said getting up to get a cup from the cabinet.
‘Everything will be okay,’ Euna thought to herself as she poured some soup into Alma’s cup.
“This is really good,” Alma, said licking her lips.
“The secret is the bone marrow,” Euna explained.
“Delicious,” Alma said finishing the last sip.
“More,” Euna offered.
“Yes, if you don’t mind,” Alma extended her cup.
After that, Euna shared the secret ingredient soup with Alma every day. Alma is hooked on the soup and has started making her own to share with Euna.
“It’s just not the same as yours,” Alma complained as they drank the soup.
“The kind of animal the marrow comes from is important. You can come with me tonight to get some if you want,” Euna offered.
“Absolutely, I just love the way I feel and the way I look. I haven’t worked out in weeks and I look great. You need to share this with everyone.” Alma said standing up and spinning around.
“You can’t tell anyone how the soup is made. It’s a secret family recipe.” Euna explained.
“Okay I won’t tell,” Alma, promised crossing her heart.
“Okay meet me at my place tonight and I’ll show you the secret,” Euna said and Alma shook her head yes.
Later that night Alma showed up at Euna’s place. However, before she could get comfortable there was nock on the door.
“Come in,” Euna said in a sexy voice.
“I like where this is going,” Dr. Webb said as he walked in and saw Alma in the living room.
“Yeah me too,” Euna said and blew the dust in his face.
“What was that?” Dr. Webb asked as he fell to the ground. Alma just stood still and didn’t move.
“Are we going to kill him?” Alma was nervous.
“No, we’re just going to get the marrow,” Euna smiled and took out a large needle.
“He’ll be upset with us,” Alma replied.
“He won’t remember a thing,” Dr. Webb’s wife walked out of the other room holding a jar.
