Jungkook hated hospitals.
He hated the smell of antiseptic, the cold white walls, and the way people whispered bad news as if speaking softly could make pain hurt less.
Yet, he found himself sitting in one every Friday evening.
Because Taehyung was there.
Taehyung sat by the window of his hospital room, watching the sunset paint the sky orange and pink.
"You know," Taehyung smiled weakly, "if I ever disappear, I want to become a star."
Jungkook looked up sharply.
"Don't say things like that."
Taehyung chuckled.
"Why? It's romantic."
"It's not romantic," Jungkook whispered. "I don't want you to disappear."
The smile on Taehyung's face faltered.
"I'm sorry."
Jungkook reached out and held his hand tightly.
"You promised me we'd grow old together."
Taehyung squeezed his hand back.
"I know."
Neither of them mentioned the illness slowly stealing Taehyung away.
Neither of them acknowledged the doctors' worried expressions.
They lived in denial because reality was too cruel.
Three years earlier, they had met accidentally.
Jungkook had spilled coffee all over Taehyung's expensive shirt.
"Oh my God! I'm so sorry!"
Taehyung looked down at himself before laughing.
"I guess this is fate forcing us to meet."
Jungkook had rolled his eyes.
"What kind of weird pickup line is that?"
"The successful kind."
It worked.
They fell in love slowly.
Late-night walks.
Sharing earphones on bus rides.
Taehyung bringing Jungkook flowers for no reason.
Jungkook staying awake to help Taehyung through his nightmares.
They weren't perfect.
They fought.
They misunderstood each other.
But they always chose each other.
Every single time.
Until the day everything changed.
Taehyung collapsed while cooking breakfast.
Jungkook still remembered the sound of the plate shattering against the floor.
The panic.
The ambulance.
The doctor avoiding eye contact.
"We found a tumor."
The world stopped.
Jungkook waited for someone to say it was a joke.
Nobody did.
"It's treatable, right?" Jungkook asked desperately.
The doctor remained silent for a moment.
"We'll do our best."
Those four words destroyed him.
Months passed.
Chemotherapy stole Taehyung's energy.
His bright smile became exhausted.
His body became weaker.
But Taehyung still smiled.
Even when Jungkook cried in the bathroom where no one could hear.
Even when he pretended everything was fine.
One night, Jungkook broke.
"Why are you acting like this is okay?" he shouted.
Taehyung stared at him.
"I'm scared too."
"Then stop smiling!"
Taehyung's eyes filled with tears.
"If I stop smiling, Jungkook..." his voice cracked, "...I think I'll completely fall apart."
Jungkook froze.
It was the first time Taehyung admitted how terrified he was.
Jungkook wrapped his arms around him.
They cried together that night.
Not as patient and caretaker.
But as two young people terrified of losing their future.
One rainy afternoon, Taehyung handed Jungkook a small box.
"Open it later."
"What is it?"
"A secret."
Jungkook narrowed his eyes.
"You know I hate surprises."
Taehyung smiled softly.
"I know."
The treatments seemed to work.
Doctors became hopeful.
For the first time in months, Jungkook allowed himself to dream again.
Maybe they would be okay.
Maybe love could defeat anything.
Then Taehyung disappeared.
Jungkook came home from work to an empty apartment.
No note.
No explanation.
Nothing.
Calls went unanswered.
Days turned into weeks.
Weeks turned into months.
Jungkook searched everywhere.
He became angry.
Heartbroken.
Confused.
How could Taehyung leave after everything?
Eventually, he stopped searching.
But he never stopped waiting.
Two years later.
Jungkook received a package.
His hands trembled when he saw the familiar handwriting.
Inside was the small box Taehyung had given him years ago.
And dozens of letters.
The first one read:
"If you're reading this, it means I was too much of a coward to say goodbye properly."
Jungkook's breathing stopped.
"The treatment stopped working."
"I knew you would never leave me, even if I asked you to."
"So I left first."
Tears blurred the words.
"I didn't want your last memories of me to be hospital rooms and suffering."
"I wanted you to remember the Taehyung who danced in the kitchen and made terrible jokes."
"I'm sorry for breaking your heart."
"But loving you was the best thing that ever happened to me."
Jungkook collapsed onto the floor.
His hands shook violently.
There were more letters.
One for his birthday.
One for when he felt lonely.
One for his future wedding.
One simply titled:
"For the days you miss me too much."
With trembling fingers, Jungkook opened it.
"Hey, my love."
"Did you eat today?"
A broken laugh escaped through Jungkook's sobs.
"I know you're crying right now."
"Please don't spend your entire life mourning me."
"You gave me happiness during the hardest days of my life."
"Because of you, I wasn't afraid of dying."
"I was only afraid of leaving you behind."
"So promise me something."
"Live."
"Laugh loudly."
"Adopt the dog we always wanted."
"Fall in love again if your heart allows it."
"And whenever you look at the stars..."
"Remember that somewhere in this universe, I loved you with everything I had."
"Forever yours,"
"Taehyung."
Inside the box was one final item.
A silver ring.
And a note.
"I was going to propose after I got better."
"Life didn't give me enough time."
"But if souls meet again in another lifetime..."
"Will you marry me then?"
Jungkook clutched the ring against his chest.
For the first time in two years, he screamed.
A cry so full of grief that it felt like his heart was being ripped apart.
Because the cruelest part of losing someone wasn't death.
It was all the love that remained with nowhere to go.
Years later, Jungkook sat on a park bench with a small black dog sleeping beside him.
The night sky glittered above him.
He looked up at the brightest star.
A gentle smile formed through his tears.
"I kept my promise," he whispered.
"I lived."
The wind brushed against his face.
Warm.
Comforting.
Almost familiar.
Jungkook closed his eyes.
"I still love you."
And somehow...
The silence didn't feel empty.
It felt like home.
Sometimes love stories don't end with "happily ever after."
Sometimes they end with heartbreak, memories, and promises carried alone.
But that doesn't make them any less beautiful.
Because being loved deeply, even for a short time, is still one of life's greatest miracles.
