Chapter 19: The Dawn of Reckoning
The morning sun finally broke through the heavy, bruised clouds that had gripped the city for days, casting sharp, golden beams of light through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master suite. But for the Vance family, the real storm was just beginning.
By seven o'clock, the quiet luxury of the estate was pierced by the rapid ringing of Sebastian’s encrypted personal line. Natalie sat at the marble console table, a cup of black coffee cooling untouched in her hands, as Sebastian stood by the window, the phone pressed to his ear.
His face was an unreadable mask of cold, clinical precision as he listened to the voice on the other end.
"Confirm the freeze," Sebastian ordered, his deep baritone cutting through the quiet room like a scalpel. "I want every offshore routing node blocked. If a single dollar moves out of Geneva or Frankfurt, I hold the compliance team personally responsible. Yes. Secure the warrants."
He ended the call, setting the device down with a soft, definitive click. When he turned to look at Natalie, a dark, victorious glint flashed within the icy blue of his eyes.
"The federal authorities moved at dawn," Sebastian murmured, walking over to stand beside her. The powerful, commanding scent of his cologne, mixed with the crisp morning air from the terrace, enveloped her. "Matteo’s sandboxed data packet was routed directly to the Eastern District prosecutor. His assets are frozen globally. Arrest warrants for corporate espionage, identity theft, and grand larceny have been issued."
Natalie let out a slow, measured breath, a sense of profound relief washing over her. "And Matteo? Have they found him?"
"He fled his penthouse twenty minutes before the tactical team arrived," Sebastian replied, his jaw tightening slightly. "He realized the connection was severed too cleanly last night. He’s running, but he has no access to his capital. In our world, a man without money is a man without a shadow. He won't survive a week."
Before Natalie could respond, a soft, urgent knock rattled the double doors. Mrs. Gable entered, her usual rigid composure slightly frayed around the edges. She carried a silver tray holding a single, official legal document.
"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance," the housekeeper said, her voice lowering. "A courier from Lopez International just delivered this emergency injunction. Arthur Lopez is downstairs in the grand foyer. He is... highly distressed, sir. He is demanding to see Natalie."
Natalie and Sebastian exchanged a brief, knowing glance. The second phase of their trap was falling into place. Arthur had finally realized that his hidden *Vesper Holdings* account had been completely compromised in the digital crossfire between the Vance brothers.
"Show him into the morning room, Mrs. Gable," Sebastian instructed smoothly, adjusting the silver cuffs of his shirt. "We will be down shortly."
Ten minutes later, Natalie and Sebastian walked side-by-side down the grand marble staircase. In the morning room, Arthur Lopez was pacing the floor frantically. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his face completely drained of color. He looked like a man who had watched his entire life vanish overnight.
When he saw Natalie enter, he lunged forward, his hands trembling. "Natalie! You have to help me. You have to speak to Sebastian. The feds... they froze everything. They targeted an account they say is linked to corporate fraud, but that money—that money was supposed to be our safety net!"
Natalie stopped a few feet away from her adoptive father, her expression entirely devoid of the warmth or submission he had spent fifteen years demanding from her. She crossed her arms, her platinum wedding band catching the morning light.
"You mean *Vesper Holdings*, Arthur?" Natalie asked, her voice dangerously calm.
Arthur froze, his eyes widening in sheer terror as his gaze darted from Natalie to the towering, imposing figure of Sebastian standing just behind her. "You... you know?"
"We know everything," Natalie said, taking a step closer, her voice dropping to a fierce, lethal whisper. "We know you funneled millions into a shell company while begging Sebastian to buy your failing business. We know you used me as a sacrificial pawn to distract him so you could run away with the stolen capital."
"Natalie, please, I am your father!" Arthur begged, dropping to his knees, his pride completely shattered. "I took you in when you had nothing! You owe the family—"
"I owe you nothing," Natalie interrupted, her voice cutting through his pleas like a blade. "You didn't take me in out of charity; you took me in to use me as a shadow for Melanie. And when your greed caught up to you, you threw me to the wolves."
Sebastian stepped forward, placing a heavy, possessive hand on Natalie’s shoulder. The sheer, suffocating aura of power he projected made Arthur cower on the floor.
"Your contract with the Vance Group is officially nullified due to fraudulent concealment of assets, Mr. Lopez," Sebastian announced, his voice echoing coldly against the walls. "I am seizing the remainder of Lopez International's physical holdings today. You have exactly one hour to leave this city before the federal authorities trace the *Vesper* signatures directly back to your doorstep."
Arthur looked up at the couple standing before him—the ruthless CEO and the daughter he had discarded, now entirely unified, ruling an empire he could never touch. Realizing he had lost everything, he stumbled to his feet and fled the room without looking back.
As the heavy doors shut behind him, the morning room fell into a peaceful, absolute quiet. Natalie turned around to face Sebastian. He was looking down at her, the usual robotic indifference in his eyes entirely replaced by a profound, unbroken respect.
"He’s gone," Natalie whispered, a genuine smile finally touching her lips. "They're all gone."
Sebastian reached out, his long fingers gently cupping her face, his touch warm and unyielding against her skin. "This is just the beginning, Natalie," he murmured, his deep voice sending a thrill through her veins. "The city will know by afternoon that the Lopez empire belongs to us. You are no longer a captive in this house."
Natalie leaned into his touch, her eyes flashing with a brilliant, dangerous charm. "I never was, Sebastian. I told you... I play to win."
