Heather summoned courage and walked up to the crying little girl after she saw that the girl was harmless. When she reached the girl she didn’t touch her, but she put on a smile and squatted to the girl’s height.
“Hey,”
But the girl didn’t turn nor did she stop crying. Heather sighed inwardly and looked at her husband for support and smiled when he gave her an encouraging nod to go ahead. She once again faced the child and continued.
“I’m Heather Laine. What’s your name?”
Yet she got the same response from the girl. Nevertheless, she continued.
“Why are you here? Where are your parents?”
As she asked the last question, the cries stopped and the girl slowly turned her head to see a seemingly beautiful lady squatting in front of her with a bright smile.
“You look like my mum, uh, your smile, I mean.”
The girl said instead to Heather’s disappointment.
“Where is she?”
“She’s in heaven, and my papa too.”
At that, Heather felt sad for the little girl. She sighed deeply as the thought of taking her in came to her mind.
“Please don’t throw me away, I know that you’re not my mother, but I have nowhere else to go.”
Heather became alert at the girl’s mentality and quickly replied
“No! Why would I throw you away?”
“Because you’re not my mother and… and, I’m not supposed to be here. Please.”
The girl pleaded as tears once again came to her eyes.
Heather sighed sadly at the girl’s thoughts and tried to console her
“How long have you been here?”
“I don’t know.” “What’s your name?”
Heather asked but the girl withdrew from her at that question and the lady was able to understand that the little girl wasn’t used to people, at least not yet.
“My name is Heather Laine, what’s yours?”
“Emily.”
The girl whispered to Heather’s satisfaction and once again, the smile on her face appeared
“Well, Emily…”
Heather began but first looked at her husband and son before facing Emily and brought out her left hand towards the girl
“How about you come libe with us.”
“Huh? Us?”
Emily asked in confusion but Heather turned to look at her family to which Emily did the same. She looked at the man and the boy for a while as she remembered the tiny voice she heard when she woke up.
‘he is the one that woke me up.’
Emily thought as a small smile appeared on her face and disappeared as it came. She finally looked at Heather and nodded, placing her tiny hands on Heather’s and they left there to meet the others.
Emily kept staring at the boy wondering how he was able to wake her with that tiny voice of his, but upon getting to them, the boy moved backwards to her displease.
“I’m not going to hurt you. I have nothing on me except for my clothes.”
“You…you don’t have a gun with you?”
Arthur asked and Emily shook her head.
“But there’s something here. That is what made the loud noise. It was a mistake, I’m…sorry.”
She said and lowered her head.
“It’s a gun.” Arthur said and Emily looked at him and the place she dropped the gun.
“Oh.”
Meanwhile, there lived an old woman who lived far away in the islands, away from towns and villages in a lonely desert. Five years ago, when Emily was born, she fell strangely ill and now that Emily is about to enter into the world, it got worse. At that time, she knew it was the end
“A bad omen was born and a bad omen is released.”
With that, she began to cough out blood until she died.
