Chapter 1
The cold bit through my skin like a thousand needles, a sharp reminder that I was a world away from the sun-drenched streets of Lagos. I pulled the thick duvet tighter around my shoulders and stared at the frost fringing the windowpane. One month in Sweden, and the chill still felt alien, a dull ache settling permanently in my bones. But the weather wasn't what churned my stomach this morning. A raw, buzzing anxiety gnawed at the edges of a strange, breathless excitement. I had no one here except Auntie Bisi, who worked double shifts and slept through the mornings. Today, for the first time, I was venturing out alone to a language café, desperate to find a single thread of connection in this glacial country. The anonymity offered a fresh start, yet a persistent voice whispered in my ear: *you're a stranger here, and you'll be a stranger forever.*
I swung my legs out of bed, the freezing floor shocking my bare feet. Wrapping my arms around my chest, I eyed the modest pile of clothes I’d brought. Back home, my best outfit was a bright Ankara dress that made me feel like walking sunshine. Here, it felt like screaming in a library. I wanted to make a good impression, but I also wanted to disappear. My fingers hovered over a gray sweater before darting to the dress. A compromise. I slipped the vibrant patterned fabric under a thick black cardigan, pulling on chunky woolen tights and the heavy boots that had cost half my savings. The girl in the mirror was a quiet collision of two worlds—my heritage flashing defiance beneath somber Nordic layers.
From across the apartment, Auntie Bisi’s heavy footsteps shuffled through the kitchen. Her gruff affection was my only anchor. I took a deep breath, the cool indoor air biting my lungs, and pulled on my oversized coat. I would speak to people in my fractured Swedish. I would navigate the labyrinthine streets alone. Grabbing my worn leather bag, I opened the front door. The winter wind rushed the threshold, but I didn't shrink back. The latch clicked shut behind me, sealing the quiet apartment away as I stepped into the frost.
