YOUNG ZU QIAN (8) sits alone on a cold marble bench, clutching a heavy silk-bound calligraphy booklet. His posture is rigid, small hand trembling as he writes characters under the stern gaze of a tutor.
A few yards away, YOUNG XIAOFAN (8)—wearing simple, patched cotton clothes—sweeps fallen leaves with a oversized bamboo broom beside his grandmother (the Nanny).
Xiaofan stops sweeping, watching Young Qian with bright, curious eyes. Qian catches him looking and quickly glares down at his paper, puffing out his cheeks in annoyance.
YOUNG XIAOFAN

You’re holding the brush too tight. Your hand’s gonna cramp.
YOUNG ZU QIAN

Mind your business, peasant boy. My father says a proper scholar holds the brush with total firmness.
Xiaofan drops his broom and saunters over, completely unbothered by Qian’s cold defense. He digs into his pockets and pulls out a polished, perfectly flat, rainbow-tinted river stone.
YOUNG XIAOFAN
Here. Put this in your left hand while you write.
Young Qian glances up, blinking in surprise at the colorful stone.
YOUNG ZU QIAN

Qian hesitates, eyeing his tutor who has momentarily stepped away. He cautiously takes the smooth stone. His tight grip on the calligraphy brush instantly relaxes, and his next stroke glides smoothly across the rice paper.
Young Qian’s eyes light up with rare, unguarded wonder.
YOUNG ZU QIAN

YOUNG XIAOFAN
(Grinning widely)
Told ya! I’m Xiaofan. My grandma cooks your soup.
YOUNG ZU QIAN
I’m Qian.
YOUNG XIAOFAN
I know. You’re always sitting here looking like a sad little statue. You never laugh.
Young Qian lowers his head, his small shoulders slumping.
YOUNG ZU QIAN
Father doesn't allow laughing during study. He says play makes men weak.
Xiaofan looks around, then quickly grabs Qian’s wrist, tugging him off the bench.
YOUNG XIAOFAN
Come on. Just for five minutes! I want to show you the carp pond behind the kitchen. If you throw breadcrumbs, they jump right out of the water!
YOUNG ZU QIAN
(Panicked but thrilled)
I can’t! If Father sees—
YOUNG XIAOFAN
I’ll protect you! If your dad gets mad, I’ll tell him I dragged you there!
Xiaofan gives him a warm, fearless smile—a bright contrast to the cold, rigid world Qian has lived in. Qian looks down at their joined hands, feeling a sudden surge of warmth and safety he has never known. He squeezes Xiaofan's hand back tightly.

Xiaofan pulls a piece of dry mantle bread from his pocket, crumbles it between his fingers, and sprinkles it over the surface of the pond. Within seconds, dozens of giant carp surge to the surface, splashing water onto the stone edge.
Young Qian’s mouth falls open in genuine delight. The rigid stiffness in his shoulders completely disappears. He lets out a high, melodious laugh—a sound so rare in the Zu household that even Xiaofan pauses to admire it.
YOUNG XIAOFAN
See? I told you!
Xiaofan shoves a fistful of breadcrumbs into Qian’s hands.
YOUNG XIAOFAN (CONT'D)
Here, you try!
Qian tosses the crumbs. The fish frenzy intensifies, splashing water onto Qian’s immaculate silk shoes. He doesn't even care. He turns to Xiaofan, his eyes shining with pure joy.
YOUNG ZU QIAN
They're so fast! I've only ever seen them drawn in paintings!
YOUNG XIAOFAN
(Looking at Qian with quiet, gentle affection)
Paintings are boring. Real things move. Real things splash. You should come out here every day, Young Master.

MASTER ZU (40s) steps out from the shadows behind Qian, placing a heavy, possessive hand on his son’s shoulder, pulling Qian back into the dry dark.

(Coldly, addressing Old Guo)
Your family’s service to this house is complete. Take her body back to your village by the sea. The estate accountant will give you three silver pieces for her burial.
Old Guo doesn't look up; he merely bows his head in bitter submission.

Xiaofan stares at Master Zu with a flash of fiery resentment in his young eyes, then turns his gaze back to Qian. Qian tries to break free from his father’s grip, reaching out his hand, revealing the faded woven reed ring still tied around his wrist.
Xiaofan sees the ring. His expression softens for a fraction of a second, but then Old Guo grabs Xiaofan’s hand, pulling him harshly toward the main gates.
YOUNG XIAOFAN
(Quietly, to himself)
Goodbye, my sad little statue.
The heavy iron gates of the Zu Estate slam shut, locking Xiaofan out in the storm and trapping Qian within the silent, suffocating walls of his noble life.

THE DISCOVERY & ESCAPE
INT. ZU ESTATE - MAIN HALL - DAY
MASTER ZU (50s) sits high on a carved wooden throne, slamming a porcelain teacup onto the table, shattering it.
Zu Qian stands in the center of the hall, flanked by guards. Beside him, OLD GUO (50s) stands trembling in anger, holding Xiaofan back by the shoulder.
MASTER ZU
(Boiling with rage)
You throw away a union with the Cui clan for the son of a peasant? A boy whose grandmother swept our floors?!
ZU QIAN
Xiaofan has more honor in his pinky finger than your entire council of aristocrats, Father! I will not marry Lady Cui!
OLD GUO
(To Xiaofan)
Did I raise you to beg for scraps at the feet of the nobles who worked your grandmother into an early grave? We leave now!
XIAOFAN

OLD GUO

Master Zu steps down from the platform, pointing a finger at Qian.

A heavy wooden door creaks open. Xiaofan slips inside, dressed in dark clothing, holding a lantern.
Qian rushes forward, throwing his arms around Xiaofan’s neck. They embrace tightly, breathing each other in.
ZU QIAN
How did you get past the guards?
XIAOFAN
I know the estate layout from my grandmother's old maps. We have to go now, Qian. If we stay, they will tear us apart forever.
ZU QIAN
Where will we go?
XIAOFAN
South. Past the mountain pass to the border trading towns. Where no one knows our names. Just you and me.
Qian nods fiercely.
ZU QIAN
Take me with you.
INTIMACY IN HIDING
INT. ABANDONED MOUNTAIN SHRINE - NIGHT
A small fire crackles inside a dilapidated stone shrine high in the forested mountains. Rain pours outside.
Qian and Xiaofan lie together on a thick blanket near the hearth. Qian’s hair is down, cascading across Xiaofan’s chest.
Xiaofan traces the curve of Qian’s jawline with delicate fingers.

Xiaofan lowers his lips to Qian’s collarbone, kissing his way down to his chest. Qian arches into the touch, his hands tangled tight in Xiaofan’s dark hair. Their breathing turns heavy and rhythmic in the quiet sanctuary.
Xiaofan intertwines his fingers with Qian’s, pressing their hands firmly against the stone floor as their bodies move together with raw, tender passion. Every touch is filled with the desperation of men who know they are running out of time, yet anchored by profound devotion.
Qian buries his face into Xiaofan’s shoulder, letting out breathless gasps as Xiaofan moves gently, worshipping every inch of his skin until they collapse together into a shared, trembling release.
They lie wrapped in each other's arms, chest to chest, watching the dying embers of the fire.
THE TRAGEDY AT THE CLIFF
EXT. MOUNTAIN PASS CLIFF - DAWN
Fog blankets the narrow rocky trail. Thick mud slickens the ground.
Qian and Xiaofan hurry down the trail, holding hands. Suddenly, shouts echo from behind.
MASTER ZU (O.S.)
Stop them! Don't let them reach the southern road!
Master Zu and half a dozen mounted guards emerge from the fog. From the opposite side of the trail, Old Guo rushes up on foot, carrying a bamboo staff.
OLD GUO
Xiaofan! Stop this madness! You are ruining your life!
MASTER ZU
(To guards)
Seize my son! Kill the peasant boy if he resists!
XIAOFAN
(Stepping in front of Qian)
Touch him and I'll jump!
They stand at the edge of a sheer cliff dropping off into a roaring river below.
Zu Qian steps up beside Xiaofan, taking his hand tightly.
ZU QIAN
Father! If you force me back, you drag back a corpse. I would rather die as Xiaofan's equal than live as your puppet!
Master Zu lunges forward to grab Qian’s arm.
MASTER ZU
You ungrateful brat—
Old Guo jumps in to block Master Zu, shoving him back.
OLD GUO
Get your hands off my son!
In the chaotic scuffle, Master Zu stumbles backward into Xiaofan. The muddy cliff ledge collapses under their weight.
XIAOFAN
Qian!
Xiaofan slips off the edge. Qian screams, diving forward and catching Xiaofan’s wrist just in time. The force pulls Qian halfway off the precipice.
ZU QIAN
(Grasping Xiaofan with both hands, muscles straining)
I won't let go! I won't let you go!
OLD GUO
Xiaofan!
MASTER ZU
Qian! Let the boy go or you'll both fall!
ZU QIAN
(Tears streaming down his mud-stained face)
Never! If he falls, I fall with him!
The ledge crumbles further. Qian’s grip slips. Both young men plummet off the edge into the raging waters below.

RECONCILIATION
INT. RIVERSIDE CABIN - DAY (THREE DAYS LATER)
A dim, quiet room.
Xiaofan lies on a futon, his head heavily bandaged. Qian sits beside him on his knees, clutching Xiaofan’s limp hand against his cheek, eyes red and swollen from lack of sleep.
The door opens quietly. Master Zu and Old Guo step inside together. Both men look visibly aged, their grand clothing replaced by simple, travel-stained garments. The arrogance is gone from Master Zu’s posture; Old Guo’s harshness has vanished.
Master Zu steps forward, looking down at his exhausted son, then at the unconscious Xiaofan.
MASTER ZU
(Voice hoarse)
The physician said... his fever broke this morning. He will survive.
Qian doesn't look up, keeping his face buried in Xiaofan’s palm.
ZU QIAN
Why are you here, Father? To take me back in chains now that he’s breathing?
Master Zu looks over at Old Guo. Old Guo sighs heavily, stepping forward and placing a hand on Qian’s shoulder.
OLD GUO
When we watched the two of you disappear into that water... your father and I... we searched the riverbank together for two days straight. Side by side. No titles, no pride. Just two fathers terrified of losing their sons.
Master Zu kneels down on the wooden floor next to Qian—an unprecedented act of humility for a high-society nobleman.
MASTER ZU
I built a dynasty for you, Qian. But watching you choose death over a life without him... I realized I was building a prison. My pride almost killed my only child.
Qian turns his head slowly, looking at his father in shock.
MASTER ZU (CONT'D)

EXT. SOUTHERN RIVER DOCK - SUNSET (MONTHS LATER)
Golden hour light reflects off a tranquil river surrounded by rolling green hills. A modest but beautiful wooden courtyard home stands near the shore.
Xiaofan stands at the end of the dock, pulling in a small boat. Qian walks out from the house carrying two woven hats, wrapping a light cloak around Xiaofan’s shoulders from behind.
Xiaofan turns around in Qian’s embrace, leaning his head against Qian’s chest.
XIAOFAN
Your father sent another shipment of silk thread from the capital today. He included a letter asking when we are visiting for the Autumn Festival.
ZU QIAN
(Smiling softly)
We'll go next month. After we finish the harvest here.
