Chapter 9 — The Heir They Tried to Erase
The gunshot echoed through the church.
For one terrifying second, I couldn't feel anything.
Not fear.
Not pain.
Not even the cold stone beneath my knees.
I only saw Veronica.
She stood a few feet away with Emily clinging to her waist, her eyes enormous with terror.
My mother's gun was still raised.
Smoke curled from the barrel.
"Stanley!"
Veronica screamed my name.
I looked down.
There was blood on my shirt.
But it wasn't mine.
My father was lying behind me.
He had thrown himself between me and the bullet.
"Dad!"
I dropped beside him.
His hand pressed against his chest. Blood seeped between his fingers, but his eyes were open.
"I'm all right," he rasped.
"You were shot!"
He gave me a weak smile.
"I've survived worse."
I barely heard him.
My eyes were locked on my mother.
She stood completely still.
The gun trembled in her hand.
"Mom..." My voice broke. "Why?"
She looked at me.
Then at Veronica.
Then at Emily.
And finally at the photograph lying on the floor.
"I never wanted it to come to this."
Veronica stepped in front of Emily.
"You've been lying to us all this time."
My mother swallowed.
"I was protecting my family."
"By burning down a church?" Veronica demanded. "By hiding a child? By pretending your husband was dead?"
My mother closed her eyes.
"I was trying to destroy the evidence."
My stomach twisted.
"What evidence?"
She opened her eyes again.
"The truth."
A laugh came from the darkness behind us.
Adrian's brother.
He stepped forward slowly.
His expression was almost peaceful.
"She's finally admitting it."
I reached for the gun.
My mother immediately raised it toward me.
"Don't."
I froze.
Veronica grabbed my arm.
"Stanley, don't."
My mother stared at me.
"I didn't shoot your father because I wanted him dead."
"Then why?"
"Because he knew."
My father's face tightened.
"Knew what?"
My mother looked at Veronica.
"You."
Veronica's eyes narrowed.
"What about me?"
My mother lowered the gun.
"You weren't just the little girl who happened to be at the church that night."
Silence swallowed the room.
"You were the reason everything happened."
Veronica shook her head.
"No."
"You were born into a family with something Adrian's family wanted."
Adrian's brother laughed softly.
"The inheritance."
My mother's face hardened.
"Not just money."
She pointed toward the photograph.
"Power. Property. Accounts. Documents. A legacy that had been passed down for generations."
Veronica stared at the photograph of her mother holding the baby.
"But that baby..."
"Was you," my mother whispered.
Veronica's face drained of color.
Emily tightened her arms around her.
I stepped toward Veronica.
"She's saying you were the missing heir."
Veronica looked at me.
"I don't remember any of this."
"You weren't supposed to," my mother said.
"What did you do to my memory?"
My mother looked away.
"Nothing."
Adrian's brother interrupted.
"She didn't need to."
He pointed at the church.
"The fire did it."
Veronica's breathing became uneven.
Images flashed across her face.
The smoke.
The screaming.
Her mother's voice.
A baby crying.
A blue dress.
A gunshot.
Veronica pressed both hands against her head.
"No..."
I caught her before she fell.
"Veronica."
"I remember..."
Her voice was barely audible.
"I remember my mother running."
"What did she have?"
"A baby."
My heart stopped.
"Your sister?"
Veronica looked directly into my eyes.
"No."
She glanced at Emily.
"Myself."
I couldn't breathe.
Adrian's brother smiled.
"Now you understand."
My mother suddenly lifted the gun again.
"Enough."
But this time, Veronica stepped toward her.
"You lied to me."
My mother didn't answer.
"You made me believe I had lost my family."
"You were a child."
"You made me believe I was nobody."
"I was protecting you."
"You destroyed my life!"
Veronica's voice cracked.
"You let me marry Stanley without telling me who I was."
My mother looked at me.
"I knew you would protect her."
I stared at her.
"You used my marriage."
"I needed Veronica close to someone I trusted."
My laugh came out bitter.
"You trusted me?"
"I knew you would never hurt her."
Veronica looked at me.
Something changed in her expression.
Despite everything happening around us, she reached for my hand.
Our fingers intertwined.
It was such a small gesture.
But after everything we'd survived, it felt like a promise.
I squeezed her hand.
"I'm not going anywhere."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"You don't know what you're promising."
"I know exactly what I'm promising."
I moved closer.
"I married you because I loved you."
She stared at me.
"And now?"
I brushed a tear from her cheek.
"Now I love you knowing the truth."
Her lips trembled.
Then she kissed me.
It wasn't the desperate kiss of frightened people.
It was quiet.
Certain.
A kiss that said we had chosen each other despite every secret surrounding us.
When we separated, Emily tugged at Veronica's dress.
"Mommy?"
Veronica immediately turned toward her.
"I'm here, sweetheart."
Emily pointed toward the altar.
"There's someone there."
Everyone turned.
A small figure stood behind the altar.
A woman.
My mother gasped.
"No."
The woman stepped into the light.
Veronica froze.
"Mom?"
The woman looked exactly like Veronica's mother from the photographs.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakably alive.
Veronica stumbled backward.
"No..."
The woman smiled through tears.
"Veronica."
I felt Veronica's hand go cold in mine.
"You died."
Her mother shook her head.
"I wanted you to believe I had."
"Why?"
"Because they were looking for you."
Adrian's brother suddenly raised his weapon.
"Enough!"
My father shouted.
"Don't!"
But the woman stepped between him and Veronica.
"You don't understand," she said.
"I understand perfectly."
Adrian's brother's face twisted.
"You were supposed to stay dead."
Veronica's mother looked at him.
"And you were supposed to stay buried."
He went pale.
"You..."
She looked at Veronica.
"I hid because I knew they would never stop searching for you."
"Who?"
Her mother pointed toward my mother.
"Her."
My mother lowered her head.
Veronica looked between them.
"Why would she want me?"
My mother whispered:
"Because your family had something mine wanted."
"What?"
"The company."
My mother finally revealed the final piece.
"Your father and my father built the company together. When your father died, the legal inheritance should have gone to you."
Veronica stared at her.
"But I was a child."
"Exactly."
My mother's eyes filled with tears.
"Your father left everything to his daughter."
Adrian's brother stepped forward.
"And that's why we needed you gone."
The church suddenly erupted with a loud metallic crash.
Everyone turned.
The doors had been locked.
Now they swung open.
Several men entered.
Adrian was among them.
And beside him was a man I had never seen before.
He carried a folder.
Adrian looked at Veronica.
"You've finally remembered."
Veronica's face hardened.
"Where is my daughter?"
Adrian smiled.
"She's right here."
He pointed at Emily.
Veronica immediately pulled Emily behind her.
"You don't get to touch her."
Adrian's expression changed.
"I didn't come for Emily."
He looked at me.
"I came for you."
My blood ran cold.
"Why?"
He held up the folder.
"Because your father wasn't the only person who knew the truth."
He opened it.
Inside was a birth certificate.
My name was printed on it.
Stanley James Carter.
But beneath my name was another name.
A name that made my entire body go numb.
Veronica's father.
I stared at the document.
"No."
My father struggled to sit up.
"Stanley..."
I turned toward him.
"What is this?"
He said nothing.
My mother began crying.
Veronica looked from the document to me.
"Stanley?"
Adrian smiled.
"The truth is much bigger than Veronica being the missing heir."
He held up another document.
"This marriage wasn't an accident."
My heart pounded.
"What are you saying?"
Adrian looked directly at Veronica.
"Your husband was connected to your family long before either of you knew it."
Veronica shook her head.
"No."
Adrian dropped the document onto the floor.
"You weren't brought into Stanley's life to escape me."
He smiled coldly.
"You were brought into his life because your families had already decided your futures."
I looked at Veronica.
She looked just as terrified as I felt.
Then my father's voice came from behind me.
"Stanley..."
I turned.
His eyes were full of regret.
"There is one more thing I never told you."
"What?"
He swallowed.
"You and Veronica..."
He hesitated.
Then he said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.
"...were promised to each other when you were children."
The church went silent.
Veronica stared at me.
I stared at her.
And suddenly the photograph of the two children standing beside the burning church made sense.
We hadn't met for the first time on our wedding day.
We had been connected long before either of us could remember.
But Adrian wasn't finished.
He smiled.
"There's just one problem."
He looked at Emily.
"Her birth certificate says I am not her father."
Veronica's face went white.
Adrian pulled out one final document.
"And the DNA report says neither am I."
He dropped it at Veronica's feet.
My eyes moved to the paper.
Then to Veronica.
She looked at me.
Her lips parted.
"Stanley..."
I couldn't speak.
Because for the first time, I understood what Adrian was really telling us.
Emily's father was someone else.
And whoever that man was...
He had been hiding from us for five years.
The church doors slammed shut behind Adrian's men.
Then the lights went out.
And in the darkness, a child's voice whispered:
"Daddy?"
It wasn't Emily.
It was a voice none of us had heard in years.
A voice from the night of the fire.
A voice I suddenly remembered.
My missing sister.
