Chapter One: The Woman in His Phone
I knew my husband was lying to me before I knew what the lie was.
It was the little things.
The way Daniel suddenly turned his phone facedown whenever I walked into the room. The way he began taking calls outside, even when the weather was terrible. The way he smiled at messages he refused to show me.
And, most painfully, the way he stopped looking at me when he said, "I love you."
For seven years, I had believed I knew my husband.
Daniel had been my best friend before he became my husband. We met when I was twenty-four, back when neither of us had much money but both of us had ridiculous dreams.
He told me he wanted to build a company.
I told him I wanted a peaceful home.
We somehow managed to build both.
At least, I thought we had.
Our marriage wasn't perfect. No marriage was. We argued about money, chores, family, and Daniel's habit of working until midnight.
But I had never worried about another woman.
Until three months ago.
That's when she appeared.
Her name was Vanessa.
I first heard it at a dinner party.
"Vanessa helped me solve the problem with the new account," Daniel said casually.
I looked up from my plate.
"Who's Vanessa?"
He paused.
Only for a second.
But I noticed.
"Someone from work."
"Someone from work?" I repeated.
"Yes."
He took a sip of water.
I smiled.
"Interesting. I don't think I've heard you mention her before."
"There isn't much to mention."
That should have been the end of it.
It wasn't.
A week later, Vanessa's name appeared on his phone again.
Then again.
And again.
At first, I told myself I was imagining things.
Then Daniel started coming home later.
"I had a meeting."
"With Vanessa?"
His eyes flashed toward me.
"Why are you asking?"
That answer hurt more than I expected.
I folded my arms.
"Because you've been saying her name a lot."
He sighed.
"She's working on the account. That's all."
"Okay."
I wanted to believe him.
God, I wanted to.
So I did.
For another two weeks.
Then, on a Thursday night, Daniel forgot his phone.
He never forgot his phone.
Not once.
But that night, he left it on the kitchen counter while he went upstairs to shower.
I was preparing tea when the screen lit up.
A message.
I wasn't trying to look.
I swear I wasn't.
But Vanessa's name appeared across the screen.
Vanessa: I miss you already.
My hand froze around the mug.
I stared at the words until they blurred.
Then another message appeared.
Vanessa: You promised me tonight would be ours.
The mug slipped from my fingers.
It shattered on the floor.
Daniel came rushing downstairs.
"What happened?"
I couldn't speak.
He looked at the broken mug.
Then at me.
Then at his phone.
His face changed.
It was subtle.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Not concern.
Fear.
"Who is Vanessa?" I whispered.
Daniel said nothing.
I stepped closer.
"Who is she?"
"It's not what you think."
My heart sank.
Because innocent people didn't usually say that.
"What am I supposed to think?"
He ran a hand through his hair.
"She's going through something."
I laughed.
It sounded strange even to me.
"She misses you because she's going through something?"
"Listen to me—"
"No."
I backed away.
"Don't tell me to listen. Answer me."
He stared at me.
"Are you cheating on me?"
Silence.
One second.
Two.
Three.
The silence became its own answer.
I felt something inside me crack.
"Daniel."
He finally looked away.
And that was when I knew.
My husband was having an affair.
I spent that night crying in the bathroom because I didn't want him to see me break.
When I finally came out, Daniel was sitting on the edge of our bed.
"I made a mistake," he whispered.
I stood in the doorway.
"A mistake?"
"It didn't mean anything."
I almost laughed.
"Then why does she miss you?"
He didn't answer.
"How long?"
"Emily—"
"How long?"
He swallowed.
"Three months."
Three months.
The exact amount of time I'd felt something changing.
Three months of lies.
Three months of kisses after he'd been with her.
Three months of sleeping beside me while another woman believed she had part of my husband.
I turned away.
"Is it over?"
"Yes."
The answer came too quickly.
I looked at him.
"Really?"
"Yes."
"You swear?"
"I swear."
I wanted to believe him.
But something in his expression bothered me.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Something else.
Fear.
As if ending things with Vanessa wasn't entirely his decision.
The next morning, Daniel left for work.
I watched his car disappear down the street.
Then I sat at the kitchen table and stared at my wedding ring.
I should have taken it off.
Instead, I tightened my fingers around it.
Maybe I was foolish.
Maybe I was still hoping that seven years could survive three months of betrayal.
That afternoon, I received a message from an unknown number.
You don't know the whole story.
I stared at it.
Another message arrived.
Ask your husband why he really can't leave me.
My heart began pounding.
I typed back.
Who is this?
The reply came immediately.
Vanessa.
I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.
Then my phone buzzed again.
And Emily... if Daniel tells you he loves you, ask him what he promised me before he married you.
I couldn't breathe.
Because Daniel had never told me Vanessa existed before our marriage.
And suddenly, I wasn't wondering whether my husband had cheated on me.
I was wondering whether my entire marriage had been built on a lie.
Then Vanessa sent me one final message.
It contained a photograph.
A photograph of Daniel.
Wearing the same suit he had worn on our wedding day.
Standing beside Vanessa.
And on his finger was a wedding ring.
Not mine.
I didn't meet your husband three months ago, Emily.
I've been married to him for eight years.
