It’s five o'clock in the afternoon and I was standing in front of a department store, waiting for my friend. The climate was warm and pleasant. I could hear the soft waves of the ocean which made my heart light. I started looking around, worried that my friend wouldn't come. That's when I saw her. She was standing a few meters away from me and looking into the water. My heart beat raised as I stared at her. She was beautiful. Her was black as midnight, her the moon. Her skin was milky, making her look ethereal as the rays of the sun bounced off of her skin.
I felt my phone vibrate, stealing my attention away from the girl.
*Hey dude, sorry I might be late. Half an hour maybe?-stan*
It was my friend. 'Stan, late as ever' I thought. 'Should I talk to her?' looking again at the girl. My heart started beating faster again. 'How should talk to her? Do I just up to her? Yeah, maybe I should' Doubts swirled in my mind as I approahed her. The waves crashed louder as the tide started to rise.
She was startled when she me stand next to her. Her eyes wide with surprise.
" Uh hi," my voice soft. "My name's Ash." I introduced.
I felt a bit awkward standing in front of her and waiting for her reply. But I sighed in relief when she softly smiled.
"I'm Mae," she said.
I felt myself blush. Her voice was like an angel's. Melodic. Soft. Soothing like the waves.
"Are you waiting for someone?" I asked as I leaned on the railings. The street lamps flickering to life as the sun sets.
"Yes. I am waiting for my father," she replied as she mimicked my stance.
I looked at her from the side. "Does he work?"
"He's a doctor, actually. He has a clinic just a few miles from here," she answered, her eyes shining with pride.
"Really? Then why are waiting here?" I asked again.
"This is convenient for me and him. My school is just right around the corner," she anwered, pointing to a bend on the road.
'Weird' I thought. 'We're from the same school yet I don't see her there.'
"Why are here?" she asked as she looked at me with her moon like eyes.
"I'm also waiting for a friend. We planned to watch a movie but he said he's going to be late," I answered while checking the time on my phone.
Just in time, a headlights came from the distance.
"Finally, he's here. Do you want to meet him?" I offered but Mae simply shook her head.
"It's fine. Enjoy your movie date okay?" she said with a soft chuckle.
I laughed along with her while waiting for Stan to pull up beside us. Instead, he passed us and only stopped when he was a few meters from us and the department store.
"That was rude. I'm sorry about that," I apologized as I stare at the car parked a few distance away. "Will you be okay being alone?"
"I'll be fine" she said then smiled at me.
Reluctantly, I said my goodbyes then headed towards the car then I tapped the window on the passenger side. The door was thrown open as Stan fidgeted on the driver side.
"What's wrong with you?" I asked, a bit worried. "Hey, I not mad at you," I jokingly added.
"Just hurry and get in. We need to get out of here," he said. His nervous movements becoming more prominent.
With worry and curiosity, I stepped into the car and closed the door. As soon as I was in, Stan drove as fast as he could.
"Would you slow down?!" I screamed while clutching the car handles.
"No. Didn't you see what you were talking to?" He asked me.
"What are you talking about?" I felt more confused with the way he was talking.
"You were talking to the dead."
I laughed. I couldn't believe what Stan was saying. I saw who I was talking to. I heard her voice. She was real.
"You obviously don't believe me but you have to. Mae is-" I cut him off.
"How do you know her name?" I asked.
"I know because I met her too. On the same place and time. I bet she was beautiful, right?" he said in a sarcastic manner. "But I wasn't the only one. A senior of mine was also there. We were both drunk that time but I remembered it clearly. She stood beside the railing, overlooking the sea. She looked beautiful, like a siren. And a siren she was. To our ears, her voice almost lulled us to sleep as she talked. It was a dream, Ash. I felt like it was a dream. Then, the dream broke and turned into a nightmare. The owner of the department store stormed out with a cross of his hand while shouting the Lord's prayer. That's when we came to our senses.
