I stood there, infront of a full-length mirror, in my new blue tuxedo. The sunlight- that poured into the room, through the slight gap between the thick curtains- indicated that it was a pleasant and bright day outside unlike the usual gloomy London rains.
As I looked at myself, I noticed how my appearance was absolutely neat and perfect. Everything about it was worthy of being on the front page of a magazine except....
The blush coloured tie around my neck.
I hated this colour. It was too feminine for my taste. Yet I couldn't bring myself to hate this particular tie....
Maybe because she gave it to me on my birthday a decade ago....
I smiled to myself thinking of what she had said that day...
◇◇◇◇◇
" This colour is made for you!" she shouted excitedly.
"No, it's not! it's disgusting." I told her with a scowl planted on my face.
She laughed in a musical way and said....
" Well To Bad! because I want my favourite person in this whole universe to wear this on the day I get married."
◇◇◇◇◇
Yes she is getting married today.
My little angel, whom I grew up with, is getting married today.
"Damien, it's starting.... go up on the alter now!.... I am sure you don't want to miss her entrance." spoke a sweet voice.
I looked at the person's reflection through the mirror. It was Mary, the bride's maid of honor, and my little sister. She was dressed in the same blush coloured floor length gown, proudly showing her 6months big baby bump.
I smiled again at her and sighed shaking my head.
"You think I can miss it?! I am the most important person at this wedding." I said laughing.
"Well Mr. VIP, you have 5 minutes before the bride runs off because of cold feet!" she said in a joking tone before leaving me alone in the room again.
I looked at myself once again in the mirror and spoke to myself...
"Just a few more minutes..."
I left the room and stood at the alter along with the other boys. All of them were dressed in the same blue tuxedo but none of them wore a blush coloured tie like me. I smiled to myself knowing how special I am to her.
"Nice tie!" someone spoke from behind me.
I turned around to see Mark, my only other best friend apart from her, who was smiling at me in his blue tuxedo and white tie.
"Yeah... Madam's order!" I said in a joking tone while looking down at my tie.
"I kind of guessed it was her choice." He said laughing.
"Are you nervous?" He asked putting his arm around my shoulder.
"Not really..." I said. "Are you?"
But before he could answer the question, the harp and piano, along with its accompaniments, started playing the wedding song in synchrony indicating the arrival of the bride.
Soon the crowd, which was earlier in a frenzy to catch up with eachother or make new friends, silenced.
The large wooden doors opened, revealing an angel in white. She looked around the room and smiled at everyone in a mesmerising way as she held onto her dad's arm while walking down the rose petal covered aisle.
She then looked forward towards the alter and brightly smiled. She was brimming with happiness and was full of energy.
Seeing her like this made me smile.
For some reason I was reminded of our middle school play...
Even that day, she wore a white gown, while her soft brown hair framed her rosy cheeks in loose bouncy curls and fell down to her waist.
She smiled in the same fashion, even back then, while I stood on stage impatiently waiting, with a racing heart, for her to kiss me.
Now that think about it carefully, today was almost like déjà vu because....
Even on that day, in middle school....
I played the role of the best friend of the man she was going to kiss...
It's been more than 15yrs since that day but I guess....
Some things just never change.
