It was a bright sunny day, no clouds, no darkness, no worries. The golden sunlight was pure and it gently touched the buildings making it seem that liquid gold was flowing down the walls. So beautiful! So shiny yet so gentle. Alas! Looks are deceptive. It was not at all a pretty scene in Kamala General Hospital. People wearing ppe suits rushed in and out of different wards having no time to stop for a breath. There was a huge queue of ‘almost revolting’ people waiting to get vaccinated on the other side of the building. In an ICU ward on the top floor lay an elderly lady no less than seventy years of age. She has been fighting for almost two months at a stretch. She was moved into ventilation last week. As she lay there she thought of her life’s best moments because she knew it would not be late before she met her beloved. She was betrayed by Fate and the love of her life was taken away by cancer only a year ago. She stood strong even though the blow was fatal. After spending 60 years of ‘quarrelling yet loving’ each other they had to part ways. It was too painful but she bore it with a smile.
But now she knew she was living out of her time. She had spent her life as a daughter, a sister, a wife, and a mother and a grandmother, what more could she want. She was never attached to materialistic pleasures. Her family comes to visit her almost everyday. Her son sits by her side and talks to her to keep her company. She can’t remember clearly the time when she was diagnosed with covid-19 that Anyway, how does it matter, she knows the ending. These last few moments of her life she thought and thought and thought. Breathing oxygen no longer seemed to be a problem. She was breathing so freely that she felt peace, like never before. She took deep breaths, “Oh! So wonderful.” she thought. She was feeling extremely light and slowly slowly rose up and up towards eternal bliss.
“Sorry sir, we tried our best.” declared the doctor and rushed away. The lady’s condition had deteriorated all of a sudden and she had a massive heart attack. The son felt sad, empty and lonely beyond expressing but also happy knowing that his mother had gone to meet someone far more precious, her husband, his father. Knowing this he prayed for her soul’s peace and decided to try his best to move on.
