What is fear? Fear is an unpleasant emotion which can be caused by the threat of danger or being afraid of something. Fear is an enemy to many and running away from it can never solve the problems that you have.
Clary used to be an optimistic person. She always had confidence in whatever she did and wasn’t afraid of judgement. However, that all changed when she moved overseas with her father. Her parents divorced when she was 17. Clary and her sister had to pick on who they wanted to live with. Therefore, she decided to leave with her father while her older sister, who was only a year older, went with her mother. At the age of 17, Clary moved to Shanghai with her father for his work.
Moving to Shanghai gave Clary no anxiety at all. In fact, she was looking forward to it. It was when she started private school in Shanghai that it all happened. When she first went to school, she was really confident that she would make friends. However, nothing like that happened at all. As days went by, she started getting fat shamed by her classmates.
In the beginning, Clary treated those remarks as a pinch of salt. But, those remarks slowly consumed her. Clary didn’t dare to tell her father of what was happening in school. She was worried that she might be disturbing his work. Thus, she started keeping everything to herself and soon, she started having insecurities. Whenever she saw herself in the mirror, she felt disgusted and occasionally, she would even vomit out the food she had consumed earlier that day. After a while, Clary started to lose some weight.
Clary still went to school as she didn’t want to waste her father’s hard-earned money. She started to feel really lonely. She sat on the bus alone, she went to lunch alone and even for classes, she was always alone. However, that did not stop the remarks. The remarks came to the point where it really got stuck in her head and she actually started starving herself. She thought that those remarks would stop if she didn’t eat. However, even after starving herself, she was still being called names in school.
One day, past midnight, Clary’s father came home from a business trip. He realised that Clary was still in the living room and his eyes widened. Only after a month of leaving her in Shanghai, she had lost even more weight. Clary’s father sat next to her and asked her, why had she lost so much weight. Clary told him that nothing was wrong with her. She brushed it off and went to bed.
The next day, she went to school and as she was walking through the hallways, she felt light headed. Clary felt as though her sight was blurry and that the walls were closing in on her. Within a couple of seconds, she collapsed. As she lay flat on the ground, no one dared to help her. Suddenly, a kind male student started running towards her and lifted her up from the ground. He then immediately ran to the nurses’ office and that was when Clary was sent to the hospital.
At the hospital, Clary woke up to see an unfamiliar face standing next to her father. The first thing she asked was what happened? Her father looked at her and told her that she had been diagnosed with anorexia. Clary looked over to the male student and that was when he introduced himself. “Erm sorry for not introducing myself earlier but I am Wayne, I don’t think you know me but I am from your class and I was the one who brought you to the hospital after you collapsed.” His introduction made Clary really touched as no one was ever kind enough to do that for her. Words could not describe what she was feeling. Then, Clary’s father faced Wayne and thanked him for bringing her to the hospital.
Wayne looked at both of them. “Oh look at the time,I guess I should go now. I will visit you soon, Clary.” As Wayne leaves the room, Clary sat her father down and told him everything about what was happening to her. She broke down into tears while telling her father about the bullying that she was receiving from school. Clary’s father was frustrated with himself as he was busy with work and could not spend time with Clary. That was when Clary and her father promised each other to never keep anything from one another ever again.
Clary had to stay in the hospital for a month before going back to school again. She thought that she wouldn’t be able to see Wayne again. But, surprisingly Wayne came by everyday. Clary never met someone like that before and she was thankful to have met Wayne. Eventually, she started developing feelings for him but little did she know that he did too. Clary was determined to recover quickly so that she could look her best and confess her feelings for him. Indeed, with the resilience she had, she recovered quickly. Soon, she was out of the hospital looking as healthy as before. As she walked out of the hospital with confidence, she called Wayne but he didn’t answer at all. She called him a couple of times but still to no avail. This time, Clary called her father and asked him if he had seen Wayne. He told her that Wayne already left the city and that he would never come back again. Little did she know that Wayne's departure was to improve on himself.
Many years have passed since that day, Clary had moved on with life but still, she hoped for Wayne’s return. She started working as a journalist and she was actually good at it. During this period, a pandemic occurred and all interviews were to be done online.
One day, she received an assignment from her manager to interview someone named Mr Y. Mr Y is the owner of one of the fastest growing companies in Shanghai. His identity has been concealed from the public since the start of his career. So, when Clary wanted to find out what he looked like, she could not find it. On the day of the interview, surprisingly Mr Y wanted a video call interview. As Clary pressed on the call button, she was shocked to see Wayne in the camera. She froze and broke down into tears. “So Mr Y was Wayne?” Wayne looked at her and smiled. “It's me, Clary, I am back.”
All this time, Wayne left the city just to build a business as he felt as though he wasn’t suitable enough for Clary. Wayne wanted to come back to Clary as a strong and powerful man so that no one will ever bully her again. While he was in another city, he was heartbroken and regretted leaving Clary in Shanghai. However, as years went by, Wayne motivated himself to become his best so that one day he could come back as a suitable man for Clary. Indeed, he managed to come back as a powerful man that could protect her and provide her with anything that he can offer.
While talking to Wayne, Clary was upset at first but when they conversed with one another, she was relieved to have finally met Wayne after so many years. She even forgave him for leaving her in Shanghai without a call. After that video call, they left each other’s contacts and soon after they started dating.
Having difficulties is one thing but having the resilience to overcome it is another. Being fearful can be a struggle but can we overcome it together?
