I sat on the wooden porch of my average house, and not so far from other buildings in the town. A swung my hanging legs, causing the heels of my feet to hit the porch.
"August~!" I hear a familiar voice.
"Ace?" I speak in question, turning my head to see my friend... Ace Xander.
Ace ran up to me and tackled me from behind.
"GAH!" I shouted as I fell on my stomach, landing on the dirty green grass.
Ace's 7-year-old body squishing mine.
"Hahaha~!!" Ace laughed in excitement as he laid on my back.
"Can you get off me?" I asked.
"Hm... Sorry." Ace apologized standing up as I then did the same.
I gazed down at his short stature, his thick curly dread-like brown hair, and hazel eyes.
Ace then spoke, "Soo... You wanna go pick some berries?"
I sighed... An everyday bonding activity we do.
"Sure..."
"Yay! Let's go!" Ace cheered, grabbing my hand with his smaller ones and running to the small forest near my house.
His dark brown skin touching my light brown skin. I tighten my grip... Ace.
We ran through the forest to a blueberry bush and picked every berry we saw. Stuffing each one in our pockets until they were full, staining our hands with the blueberry's natural blue dye, and played as our heart's desires.
"Acey, look," I said with my hand full of blueberries.
"What-
When he turned to look at me I splattered all the blueberries in my hand on his face.
"Hahaha!!"
When I laughed he attacked me with blueberries. Smearing it all over me.
"Hahahahaha!!!... Hm?" Ace suddenly stopped laughing as I wiped my face with my dirty blue sleeves. Even though the blue dye stayed on my skin.
"Blue... Haha. Blue!" Ace raved.
"What?..." I said then whipping my dyed hands on my dirty caramel-colored shorts.
"That blue is good on you, mostly since you always look so sad. So, your Blue!" Ace exclaimed. "Blue, Blue, Blue! That's your name!"
"Well... Your... Uh, Teddy." I stated.
"Teddy?? Why Teddy?" Ace immediately questioned.
"Because... You remind me of one." I claimed.
Ace wiped his blue-dyed hands on his dirty red collar shirt.
"Whatever, Blue." He a
said uttering a squeak as he mumbled my nickname.
"We should go back to my house. My mom and dad are probably worried." I started as Ace nodded.
We held each other's hands as we walked back. Just in case we would get lost. When we made it back I knocked on the door to my house.
The door opened and I saw my mom,
"Ace? August?... I thought I told you two not go to the blueberries!" My mom fussed at us.
"Calm down, Cami." My dad walked over to us, patting my mom's shoulder. "Ace, August. I see you two went grab some berries from the forest." Dad said scrubbing our heads with his fist.
Ace laughed and I good there gazing at the field.
"You two need to take a bath." Mom stated crossing her arms.
As my dad went to fix our bath, I was going to walk in the house until.
"Ah. You're not coming in this house like that." My mom stopped me.
"Then-
"Clothes off. Now." My mom demanded, holding out her hand.
I lightly sighed, then starting to strip down.
Ace stood there confused, not knowing what to do.
"You too young man." My mom said holding my clothes.
"Yes, mam!" Ace exclaimed, taking off his clothes.
We gave our clothes to my mom and went to the bathroom, taking off the rest of our clothes there.
"Are you in the bathtub yet?" I asked with my eyes closed.
"Yeah..." Ace said as I could hear the water in the bathtub burble.
"Are your eyes closed?..." I asked still having my eyes shut.
"Yes." Ace said getting annoyed.
I then opened my eyes and seen Ace in the bathtub with his eyes closed. His body was covered by the bubbles in the water. I quickly got in the bathtub too, sitting across from him.
I stared at him, then looking down at the bubbles in the water.
"Can I open my eyes?" Ace asked.
"Oh!... Yeah." I said surprised, forgetting to tell him before.
Ace opens his eyes and looks at me.
It was silent...
Ace then splashed water on me.
"Why are you acting so quiet!?" Ace shouted in question.
"I'm always quiet..." I said confused.
"Huh... Oh, yeah. Um, well. It's annoying me." Ace claimed washing his face.
I flicked droplets of water at Ace,
"Am I annoying you?..." I asked.
Ace turned to me and shifted his position to make his bareback face me.
I sighed, starting to scrub myself.
"You're hot-headed." I blurted closing my eyes.
"Huh!?" Ace snorted, turning his body towards me. Causing water to splash on me. "I am not hot-headed!"
I shrugged, getting out of the bath, and dried my body. Then Ace suddenly splashed water at me, "Hey, don't just get out the bathtub like that!"
"Like what?..." I asked confused.
"Tch, nothing." He clicked his tongue in aggravation.
This, relationship, of ours, continued for a long time. Then... He faded away. With each passing day, he showed up less.
I soon forgot his name... And everything about him. I moved houses, and my mom started getting sick. I started to help take care of her, even at a young age.
At the age of 10, my dad was badly injured... Causing him to go into a coma. He worked as an FBI agent, there was always a possibility he could have ended up hurt. My dad's coma interactions were not the best, but I made the most out of him still being alive.
At 13 I started helping at the hospital my dad stayed at. I mainly help comfort children there. Ages 5-9 would be the ages I would care for. While also visiting my dad daily at the same hospital.
Time continued to pass and i started to obsess over my mom's health. I began to watch and help her constantly.
I worked on my grades more, wanted to get into a good high school. I planned to become a Pediatrics nurse... I liked helping the children in the hospital.
By high school, I started getting paid for working in the hospital. My mom had to stay home more and she got paid from my dad's services from his previous job. Soon, I got a letter from A. C. Golden High School. One of the top high schools on my side of the state.
Then things started to change...
"August, you have a letter!" My mom called me from my room upstairs.
"I'll be down there in a second!" I tried to shout back, I didn't like straining my voice.
I place the book I was reading down and headed downstairs. I looked around the living room to see my mom sitting at the dining table, smiling, and the letter underneath the palms of her hands.
"August, please. Sit." She smiled, her small fragile body started to tremble.
"Mom, are you okay?..." I questioned in concern running over to her.
"Sit, down!... Pl-Please." My mom demanded as she placed her hand on my chest, trying to push me away.
I backed down, walked to the other side of the table, and sat across from my mom.
"So..." I mumbled awkwardly, sitting formally.
"August... You, you, made it." My mom stated, sliding the letter over to me with her dark brown hands.
I picked up the candle white letter, it had a golden stamp... With an indention of the alphabet "G". Everything about the letter looked normal.
I opened the letter, it had a folded paper inside. My mom started tearing up as I continue to take out the paper.
"August Dove, you have been accepted into A. C. Golden..." I then mumbled the rest of the text written.
"Isn't this great!?" My mom cheered, then coughing after.
"Relax mom... I don't want you to hurt yourself." I stated as she took a few deep breaths.
"Yeah..." She sighed, "I might just die early." My mom chuckled.
I just sighed and smiled, "I hope not, I'll try my best to keep you with me.".
"Don't let me hold you down. You have a lovely future ahead of you." My mom stated with a weak smile.
I just smiled... I didn't know what to say.
It's probably better to say quiet about such a topic anyway.
For the next 3 months, I worked on my future studies. I also continued to work at the hospital while visiting my dad, and just like that... High School began.
