Laura Spark is a young Canadian woman in her mid-twenties who lives with her mother in a small flat in Vancouver. Her mother is physically disabled and is in a wheelchair 24/7. Laura and her mother do not have much money, and because her mother is physically unable to work, Laura has to earn a living. This is not always easy, and as a result, she has many low-paying jobs. Furthermore, she has a red scooter with a red helmet and is an incredible fan of Cyndi Lauper. Her entire room is covered with posters of Cyndi Lauper, and she also has a jukebox in her small room. That jukebox once belonged to her father, who passed away when she was only two years old. She is an only child, doesn't quite know what she wants to do with her life, and loves animals, children, dancing, DJing, and she also loves adventure. At the beginning of the story, she is rather clumsy, awkward, insecure, nerdy-ish, nervous, and anxious, and overall, she is seen by those around her as the ultimate underdog. Later in the story, however, when she meets a certain Mr. Sui, she becomes much more self-assured and self-aware, realizes her strengths, and gains increasing self-confidence—in herself, as well as in life and the world. She becomes less anxious and fearful, and begins to love herself and her life more and more. Only then does her adventure in Japan begin!
