The lecture hall had mostly emptied out, chairs creaking as the last few students left. Elias stayed behind, hovering near the podium, his notebook hugged to his chest like a shield.
“Professor Ashcroft,” he said quietly. “Your take on the text… the part about immortality—it felt different.”
Lucien paused. He lifted his head slowly, eyes settling on Elias with a calm that was almost unsettling.
“Different?” he asked.
Elias swallowed. “It sounded… personal.”
The air seemed to cool, just slightly.
Lucien closed his book with deliberate care.
“That,” he said evenly, “is not an interpretation you should dwell on.”
Elias nodded, accepting the dismissal.
Still, neither of them moved.
